Re: [MBZ] Oil change cost
My nephew is shop manager and part owner of a foreign car repair shop. He says his cost for a standard oil change is @$45.00. The $18 oil change special at the local quick lube shop sure isn't how they make their money. That transmission fluid is really dirty/burnt. See the color .. you really need to change the transmission fluid and give it a flush. I was on a multi-day trip and had one of those turkeys tell me that, and remind me that I have to do that every 18,000 miles. I asked him to look at the 8,000 miles on the odometer of my fairly new car. He just said Oh.. and backed away from the car. No more offers the one and only time I ever went there. For example, local Mobil 1 0W40 retails locally for $6.99 (I just bought 20 quarts on sale for $5.30 which is the lowest price for years) and 15/50 from Walmart for the usual 23 bucks for a five quart jug. And then there is the filter (fleece in my car) which might $7 or more. Or less. The 126 300SEL had a Mercedes battery in it and I think the 90 300D had an interstate battery in it. I have never had do any a/c repairs in any of my cars except one of the 84 300D's had been converted before I got and it actually was OVERFILLED with 134a. I put it on the machine, evacuated it all and then refilled it with what I thought was the proper amount and it cooled perfectly for the rest of the time I had it (many many thousands of miles). The previous owner had done the extensive conversion - i.e., he replaced the compressor, drier, a couple of lines, receiver and changed the o rings. So, it was a good conversion. I would not buy a MB with non-working a/c unless the rest of the car was perfect and I got an amazing deal on it and could justify spending a lot of money on the a/c if necessary. The other end of the spectrum is also OK, where the rest of the car is acceptable _and_ it was an amazing deal, _and_ you spend nearly nothing by using the U-Pull...if you don't mind a little bit of work. I've done that a time or two. I've also refurbished the seized Nippondenso compressor from the 190D: $00. So far that still works fine, though we're not driving that car right now. Of the fleet, the only car that didn't end up with working AC after I was done with it was the Albatross, and that because the DPO had _removed_ parts. Re: [MBZ] Just had my first bad experience with BMW
Assuming the secret to avoiding costly repairs on Mercedes and BMW is to properly maintain them and perform scheduled maintenance and preventive maintenance, then this car should be as reliable as any other complicated luxury with good maintenance records. That helps immensely. The other big secret is to avoid lemon designs, and by buying a well-maintained older example that kind of critical information should be available by then. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Lost key on a 300SD, 1981
Does the key you have operate both door locks and the trunk? If so, it is likely an original key; it is highly UNlikely that all three of those locks have been changed. If that key does not operate the ignition switch, the switch may have been changed to something different from original, OR something maybe ever so slight is wrong with the key or the switch that keeps the key from turning it. Coupla years ago, the key would not turn the ignition switch in my '87 300D. After several days of frustrated key jiggling and making no progress in turning the switch, I attached the key to the vibration plate of a vibrating sander, stuck the key in the switch, turned the sander on, and in about 10 seconds turned the switch to position one, slipped the tumbler cylinder out and slipped a new one in less than a minute. Dealer was going to charge me $700 to $800 to cut/grind the old cylinder out and replace it, but the vibrator made it possible to turn the key to position one and slip it out in a few seconds. Those are 15 inch, aren't they? Trailer tires are also a possibility. Hmm. I'm not sure I like that idea. All of those tires will drastically hurt the ride quality and handling of your car. Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. Just curious, how much load do you carry with your 300TD? I have not weighed it. But I ran out of room. It wasn't all heavy gear, but there were 4-5 toolboxes, 5 or so gallons of water, food etc for a 2 week family outing. With no spring sag, it's hard to tell the weight load. Tires look like they could use a bit more air - but had about 45 PSI. I've always wanted to replace my Volvo wagon with a 300TD, but I'm not sure if the rear suspension or transmission could take the place of those on my Volvo, which can do this: http://illumina.ucr.edu/misc/740c22.jpg http://illumina.ucr.edu/misc/740_move1.jpg Hah! Not with the two bolts to the underside of the bumper hitch I got with the car! I want to try towing that sailboat to Big Bear Lake which is at over 7,000 feet elevation up a windy mountain road, and the boat weighs about 3,300lbs- but has it's own brakes. Could a 300TD handle that? I haven't pulled anything with mine - partly because of the wimpy hitch, but also because I have a pickup and a suburban for pulling the big trailer. But with the turbo, I'd guess the elevation wouldn't be much problem. I drove a 300D turbo to the top of Pikes Peak. It would hardly move till the turbo spooled up - then it acted much as it did along the Mississippi river. I have no idea about the transmission. If I were to pull much of any trailer, I'd find some way to rig a weight distributing hitch on it. Now that I've used one, I hope I never have to go back to pulling without one - unless I am using a fifth-wheel. -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] Transmission fluid Question
According to BMW, the transmission fluid in my car is Lifetime Fluid never needs changing. Well, I think that is horse hockey. When they say lifetime, I don't think they are considering a 12 year old car with 160,000 miles. Here is my difficulty: My indy (who is a MB expert) trusts the local BMW indy who says if the tranny is working fine, then don't do anything to it. But, I joined the BMW forum and half the folks on there say, change that fluid before you have a problem! and others believe in the lifetime fluid idea. I DO NOT have any problems with the transmission. Its working fine. But, in the records I have seen, there has not been a transmission in at least 80,000 and possibly never. There is no dipstick to check the condition of the fluid. The transmission does a filter and a drain plug. It also uses some super duper expensive synthetic fluid. So, the question is: who's right? Do I change the fluid and risk the transmission failing because all the crap in the tranny is what is holding it together? Or, do I just keep driving it and keep my fingers crossed. If I did do some sort of service, I think there are two options. 1. Buy the 15 qts of fluid and do a transmission flush using one of the machines that hooks into the cooler lines - advantage of this is that it cycles ALL of the old fluid out and replaces it all with new fluid. Or 2. Drop the trans pan, replace the filter, and top it off with the 5-6 qts of fluid that will come out when I drop the pan. If I do anything, I am going to go ahead and spring for the BMW fluid, BMW filter and evidently the pan has four magnets (to collect the metal shavings) in it that should be cleaned and replaced. Any ideas?(I wish I knew the BMW version of Marshall Booth!) Donald H. Snook -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... You can remove the panel and clean inside. Marginally less energy-efficient than the sealeds, at least for the N years that a seal holds, but liable to last the life of the house with care. Re: [MBZ] Transmission fluid Question
BMW claims that they figured that one of the biggest causes of transmission fluid was through the dipstick; mostly from people *checking* it! not sure i buy that story, but think it more likely that they figure they can get it through warranty now without the need for a fluid change if they eliminated potential for contamination through the dipstick. there's a couple of schools of thought in the fluid flush, but let's keep in mind the rate you turn over cars; if you don't have a problem with it now, is it likely that you'd be preventing any problem you might have by changing the fluid before you've traded it out for something else? cheers! e Donald Snook wrote: According to BMW, the transmission fluid in my car is Lifetime Fluid never needs changing. FWIW when I buy batteries at the Interstate dealer (which they install for free) they do not charge for disposal. Heck, they make money by selling them to recyclers like Exide. The recyclers grind them up, separate the lead and make new batteries. You can also bring any old batteries in and they will take them for you at no charge. The county also has a couple of places where you can do this, also dump your old motor oil along with other household recyclables (cans, plastic bottles, etc). Re: [MBZ] Transmission fluid Question
For the 1-3 months (or weeks) you will keep the car, why bother? Drink the lifetime koolaid, smile, and let the next sucker worry about it. At 10:02 AM 8/20/2009, you wrote: According to BMW, the transmission fluid in my car is Lifetime Fluid never needs changing. Re: [MBZ] Tires - was: What do retired people do all day?
It was perfectly safe and stable, and easily drove over 1,000 miles- including the steepest mountain pass in the US freeway system. I added rear spring spacers to level out the car, and adjusted the headlights to the correct level. I have a custom made hitch that is approximately as heavy duty as what you'd see on a 1 ton truck. Also, the trailer contents were readjusted somewhat after that photo to reduce the tongue weight- but the entire volume of the trailer was filled, mostly with books and tools! I did drive it very easy, and stayed under 55mph to be safe. There was no sway or braking problems at all, even coming through the Siskiyou pass. The car was modified with a locking rear differential, and enormous transmission cooler, all synthetic fluids, rear spring spacers, high boiling point brake fluid, ceramic brake pads, an engine temperature monitor, and a transmission temperature gauge among other things. The Volvo 700 series is basically built like a small pickup truck... The key to making it safe is setting the car up properly, and driving very conservatively. If one were to take a stock Volvo wagon, and drive it like it didn't have a trailer (like I see most people with large pickups and trailers doing) they'd certainly lose control of the rig. Tyler Curt Raymond wrote: Can do and can safely do are 2 different things. That second picture of yours is clearly NOT safe. Theres either too much tounge weight on the trailer or too much weight in the back of the car. At night the car's lights will blind oncoming drivers. Also the ass end of the car will wallow and make the front wheels light. Not safe. I can't remember what you've got for a Volvo, I checked trailerhitches.com for an '87 760 wagon which is rated for 3300#. Remember thats the maximum weight with the trailer. '97 850 wagon gets 3500#. A 300D's towing capacity with brakes is something like 3300# so a TD should be the same or slightly more. Safe towing is not just about having brakes although thats real important, its about having enough weight so when the wind or a big hill is trying to move everything all sideways the downpressure on your tires is enough to prevent it... -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Tires - was: What do retired people do all day?
20 some years ago I bought continental 6 ply tires from the no longer extant EuroTire to put on the 66 frod van. I also put air shocks on the rear. I routinely made 600 mile trips to Chicago and hauled back 2000 to 3500 lb of goods. The tires were great. EuroTire told me they were made for VW transporters in Europe, where they were actually used to haul things besides hippies. Quote from the politically incorrect guide to the 60s: outside the Haight-Ashbury area of SF, there were almost no hippies [in the 60s]. The front really does not look all that bad but that box on the back is strange. I have to say that whenever I see something like this I wonder why somone spent so much money for something that makes very little sense but then I tell myself that they are enjoying an auto hobby and trying something new. That is good. I, personally, don't care if I ever see another big block Camaro and yet they seem to be something that a lot of car buffs find to be desirable. To each his own. It's very creative. What did they make it out of? Is it a C230 4matic? It's a nice idea- but they need to hand build new doors and a new interior with leather and wood to match the 20s styling of the front end, and probably cut the roof off and make it into a convertible. I think it *could* be a very neat car, but it's really only half done (or less). Re: [MBZ] Transmission fluid Question
I forgot to mention, BMW owners are not allowed on this list. Donald Snook wrote: According to BMW, the transmission fluid in my car is Lifetime Fluid never needs changing. [MBZ] New radio choice: Sony vs. Kenwood
I'm going to upgrade my radio (currently an old cassette playing Sony, horrible wire-mangle install by some PO) and I've narrowed my list down to Sony vs. Kenwood. Sony: either CDX-GT920U or CDX-GT630UI Kenwood: either KDC-MP642U or KDC-MP942U Can anyone offer an opinion on which is more user-friendly? Any other significant considerations? I've spent hours and hours on Crutchfield's site, and visited a big box retailer to try out an example from Sony and one from Kenwood. Kenwood has a big edge in the number of user-adjustable features, but their user interface is not quite as intuitive as Sony's (small difference in my opinion, likely inconsiderable after I become familiar with the radio). I need the radio to have an Aux input and a USB input, so that I can listen to MP3 (Moneytalk, ClickClack, audio books, etc). I'm also interested in getting a HD-capable radio, so I'll probably get the HD radio add-on accessory for another $50. Kenwood has their inputs on the back of the radio with long pig-tails, so they can be routed to glove box or center console. If the car was well care for, as it seems it was, it will go for a long time. Sure, it's a top of the range BMW, so parts are never going to be cheap, but they made enough of them, you can find parts in the bone yard, or through places like Rusty online to keep the running costs down. If the first time you write out a cheque for $1000 puts you off, just remind yourself what a new one would cost you, and how cheaply you're getting to enjoy a top of the range BMW. GERMANY: Prosecutors raid Porsche offices 20 August 2009 | Source: just-auto.com editorial team The offices of Porsche have been raided by German federal prosecutors probing alleged insider trading on Volkswagen shares. Porsche said in a statement that that investigative proceedings led by the public prosecutor's office have been carried out at Porsche Automobil Holding SE and Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, both in Stuttgart. Bloomberg reported that the search came after the German financial regulator BaFin handed a complaint to the prosecutors office following a probe into Porsche's attempt to gain control of VW Group. In the raid - which took place this morning - a number of documents were seized. According to Porsche, there is a suspicion of breaching the publication duty as prescribed by the German Stock Corporation Act and of market manipulation. Porsche said it is rejecting these allegations while cooperating with the investigating officials 'in order to clarify the issue as quickly as possible'. Porsche added that those under investigation are former chief executive Wendelin Wiedeking and former chief financial officer Holger Haerter. -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The car was owned by a local doctor and he would just bring it in and get whatever done it needed. In a weird coincidence that proves that we live in a small world, I actually defended this same doctor in a lawsuit a few years ago. Assuming the secret to avoiding costly repairs on Mercedes and BMW is to properly maintain them and perform scheduled maintenance and preventive maintenance, then this car should be as reliable as any other complicated luxury with good maintenance records. Re: [MBZ] A/C
My 190DT has some residual pressure in the A/C system, un-converted R12 I presume. If the system were to be charged with, say, Freeze 12, would it need to be evacuated completely or could the system just take a charge as is? ( I just know I'm gonna regret this). I would evacuate, since you have no idea what that pressure really is. It could be half air for all you know. It's safe enough to just top off if you know that it's never gotten low enough pressure to ever suck in air, but pretty much only under your stewardship.

Re: [MBZ] spousal subterfuge
The identical-looking SDL was in the garage, evidently seldom-visited by SWMBO. Identical SEL sitting outside in clear view while he was trying frantically to bring it up to acceptable standards (condition) before she discovered the ruse. ;) Yes. She even rode in it and kept saying I don't remember this, or that. ('90 styling and equipage is not quite exactly '86.) Finally I said You wouldn't Ouch. And the Mrs. didn't notice the presence of another car? One benefit of having more than a dozen of the things lying around. (Benefit?) She's gotten a bit numb. Numb, yet highly incensed. Jim, how did you pull this off? How long did it take? What was her reaction? No special effort, wasn't really even trying. Just avoided certain key words, like new, subspecies bought a. A week. Not good. Jim, you are either my hero or the greatest criminal mind since Lex Luther (or both). I know what one household voter here would say. (Rhymes with flickhead.) And, now, other women are beginning flirt with 'im when he's driving the SL. I can guess her reaction: Take her out, buy her flowers, GIVE HER A CAR! (Have I mentioned that she's really upset about the car quantity? I'm looking forward to the departure of Ethelred, either by sale or by my snowbird Dad's borrowing of it to take to Arizona. I'll tell him to sell it there when he's tired of it.) If we could get a G300D 463 here I'd dump a handful of sedans in exchange, no problem. Big, 4WD, cushy, diesel. Re: [MBZ] what is maintenance?
Assuming the secret to avoiding costly repairs on Mercedes and BMW is to properly maintain them and perform scheduled maintenance and preventive maintenance, then this car should be as reliable as any other complicated luxury with good maintenance records... I must repectfully disagree. Most of the unreliable component parts in MBs and presumably BMWs have failure modes unrelated to any action of the owner. And those are the parts that were badly designed or under designed in the first place. There are many examples but as just one, I submit the vacuum servo heater valve in the 123s. There is nothing an owner can do to lengthen or shorten this misbegotten part's life. Some of the most famous in recent years are the electronic modules in the early 211s and 203s. How about 211 taillight sockets? Well, the list could be endless. But for certain, no amount of oil changes, trans changes or alignments and fuse replacements scrupulously recorded in a little book will ward off these failures. Some day I will bore you to tears with the list of early failures in my 123, 201X2, 202 and 203 not to mention the later out of warranty crap-outs.
