Hospial ER was very busy when we went in. All of the trige nurses and Docs had

comfortable to allow me to wait {3 Hour!} While more urgent csases were

Re: [MBZ] Olde, strokes and arteritis

2010-02-20 Thread Mitch Haley

My mother has had an interesting time of it in recent months.
Finally got diagnosis a couple of weeks ago, 8 months after onset of symptoms.
We're lucky she isn't blind. She does have slight brain damage, as if from a
very minor stroke. She does crosswords and sudoku puzzles for mental exercise,
is now about 90% as good at them as she used to be.

Giant cell arteritis frequently causes headaches, jaw pain, and blurred or
double vision. Blindness and, less often, stroke are the most serious
complications of giant cell arteritis.

History: Debilitating headaches, jaw pain, weakness, dizziness, beginning June
2009. Couldn't stand to chew. Saw a GP, dentist, and oral surgeon. Dentist did a
little grinding to improve bite, which didn't help, oral surgeon found no
problems, nor did general practitioner. Problems gradually improved to where she
could tolerate it (arteritis should not have improved by itself)

October, flu symptoms without fever. Weakness, dizziness, double vision, felt on
the verge of fainting. Vomiting after every one of these spells, and there were
many. Culminated in passing out, vomiting and ambulance ride. We thought it was
TIA. Idiot ER doc told her that her dinner disagreed with her. GP ran a bunch of
tests, gave up and referred her to neurologist. Found minor stroke damage, we're
thinking it was the night she was in a bed in the ER during the timeframe that
stroke medications would have helped.

After exhausting all possibility for non-invasive tests, a temporal artery
biopsy was positive for arteritis. Prednisone (steroid) pills, and things are a
lot better after a couple of weeks.

I did a WebMD search, trying to pretend that I didn't know any more than the
doctors knew in June. In the article on Geriatric Headache, Temporal Arteritis
was about the fourth ailment mentioned, and it fit better than anything else.

It afflicts 18 persons per 100,000 in the over 50 age group, 3/4 of them women.
I bet the rate is a lot higher than 18 in women over 70.

Neurologist said that arteritis would be beyond a the scope of a general
practitioner. Next time something is going on with me or a family member, and
the local medical community is scratching their collective heads, I'm going to
spend a few hours doing internet research on the symptoms.

Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue

I will continue to forward this every time it comes around!

*STROKE: *Remember the 1st Three Letters. S. T. R.

*STROKE IDENTIFICATION:*

*During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured
everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) .. She said
she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.*

*They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she
appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the
evening*

*Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been
taken to the hospital -
(At 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had
they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be
with us today? Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless
condition instead.*

*It only takes a minute to read this...*

*A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours
he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke..._totally_. He said the
trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the
patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough...*

*RECOGNIZING A STROKE*

*Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and Learn!*

*Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately,
the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe
brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a
stroke.*

*Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple
questions:*

*S **Ask the individual to SMILE.
*
T **Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)

(i.e. It is sunny out today.)
*
R* *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency
number _immediately _and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out
his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the
other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10
people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

*I have done my part. Will you?*

Mitch wrote surgeon found no

OK, GPs seem to be poorly trained for anything other than the most common of
maladies. Perhaps that's what they se most often? Things like colds, flu,
sprains, and other relatively minor problems seem to be what they deal with
the best. Anything else means a visit to the specialist.

But I guess they get very good dealing with the stuff they see the most.
Which IMO that's why it's important for us to be as active as possible in
dealing with doctors and illness. The diagnosis is the most critical as
that's what gets the ball rolling toward recovery so it's important to tell
the doc about every possible symptom you've noticed - keeping notes can be
invaluable. Something you think is unrelated may be vital in understanding
the problem.

But be careful about diagnoses - they are very hard to do and many problems
have the same (or similar) symptoms - so it's easy to convince ourselves the
problem is either minor or severe when the reality may be very different.

Have a nice weekend - (life's too short to do otherwise) ;-) Let the little
problems go -

It's amazing what girls can get us guys to do ;)

The only things I've replaced that weren't standard maintenance or

the rules are different for an OM606 that is naturally aspirated (NA).
I had an OM617 NA, intake was coated with incredible layer of tar
because the EGR had failed in open position. Fixed that, switched to
Mobil 1, and all that tar turned gooey and began flowing. Every so
often I'd get a huge cloud of smoke out the back when the engine
ingested some. However, Marshall's advice to me was that cleaning it
would have no affect except reduce the occasional cloud of smoke.

re the question about the oil I have used - Have been using Synthetic
since we bought this car ~3 years and 75K miles ago - I would describe
what I found in the intake as liquid black slime - what a mess to
remove.

It's going back together now - I cleaned it with lots of rags, paper
towels and simple green mixed with Carb/brake cleaner. It came out
pretty easily but was pretty messy.

I'm taking a break now - leaning over the engine is hard on the backs of
the legs! I dropped a intake manifold bolt so if I can't see it with a
light and grab it with a magnet I'll have to drop the lower panel some.

Thx for the suggestions - next time the intake plenum will go to a
machine shop - I've seen what they can do with a engine bloc - they must
have some great chemicals!
Hopefully I can schedule the work more ahead of time next time.

No problems with the delivery valves - all the o-rings were very dried
and cracked (they crumbled when I tried to remove them) - I also
replaced the springs and copper washers. The old springs were ~1/8
shorter than the new ones - don't know what effect that compression had
(anyone know??) -- didn't have any problem assembling all the DV's - I
coated the o-rings and threads with a liberal amount of Kroil and the
o-rings slipped on easily.

I then centered the DV's in the IP and put the copper washer in place,
set the spring on the DV and then put the casing on and screwed it down.
Then followed the torque procedure.

No problems I know of - it made a bit of noise as the air slowly exited
the system - it is hopefully free of air now. I was surprised at how
much noise it made as the air was forced out of the system.

I'm really glad to have this job behind me though. I hope I get another
160,000 miles out of this set of washers, o-rings and springs -

My only surprise when when it came time to install the intake manifold
gasket -- it was for a 6 cylinder and I have a 5 cyl.A call to the
local
MB dealer solved the problem - the 6 cyl gasket is supposed to be
trimmed to fit 5 cylinders - once he said it I recalled that I'd done
the same thing last time I replaced the gasket.

Let me now if you have any questions -

I would also recommend changing to synthetic oil if you are not using

A cracked head, however, will cause all sorts of crap to collect at

[MBZ] MB repair, maintenance manual

some pretty good info on peachparts.com, and even there people write than those

Possibly, but more likely than not the ride height is diminished. If you're
picking things to replace in the rear suspension on a 123 or 126, my first pick
would be the differential mount. After that, subframe bushings.

Both pretty easy and inexpensive updates/repairs, for the most part. The
subframe bushings can be a b*tch to do sometimes, especially on northern cars
due to snow/salt corroding the bolts. Lots of brute force required on that one
in many cases.

Agreed. Haynes books seem to really vary in quality. I'm not
impressed with the 107 one, but I think the one for the 124 explains
some stuff a lot better than the FSM CDs, e.g. how to disassemble a

Re: [MBZ] 124, 126 rear subframe

2010-02-20 Thread Peter Frederick
The 126 is the same as the 123 except for the size. Same mounts,
etc, same hassles.

The W124 is completely different -- multilink suspension (and you
probably need to replace them all) plus four subframe mounts, two
front and two rear (not the same). It can be done by jacking up the
rear and dropping one side at a time, then using a puller/pusher to
remove and install the mounts.

Diff is held on by two steel and rubber inserts in the subframe at
the rear and a pair of rubber mounts between plates up front. Rear
mounts must be removed to the front (they are tapered and won't come
out the back) and they are always very stuck. Best course is to use
an air chisel to collapse the steel ring to get them out, then pull
the new ones in. You can hang the diff on a jack while you are doing
this and leave the axles installed.

This is a job I was going to tackle on the old 300D when it got
smashed, and will be doing next month on the new one (and an
evaporator transplant, oh joy!)

OK, The noise is probably more loud than I initially thought. I cracked
the fuel line connections where they attach to the injectors and made sure
all air was out. It was dark but I think I got the air out. I was
surprised at how little fuel came out with each squirt.

Next, Using a long screwdriver I put one end again the fuel pipe at each DV
the other end against my ear listening for sounds. All sounded pretty
smooth with a soft bumping/whooshing sound. So then I did the same thing
with the end of the screwdriver against the fuel line where it connected to
each injector. #'s 3, 4 5 were louder than #'s 1 2.

I'm thinking I should have the injectors serviced or buy new ones. What's
the preferred method? Are the injectors Rusty sells matched ? If so,
does that make the choice to go with Rusty?

Sitting in the car with doors windows closed the engine is pretty quiet -
but when idling there is a distinct soft klunking. I'd probably live with
it but if my wife is going to come home and tell me how bad the noise is (to
her) I'll need to do something. (besides close the windows.) ;-)

One more question -
Rusty has the Fuel Inj. Nozzles for ~$30 ea. and the Injectors for ~$72 ea.

If the Nozzle is the only part to ever need service the choice is easy - buy
a nozzle but it appears other parts inside the injector body may need to be

But I cannot decide which is the best buy??

Has anyone been through this recently? I'm in no hurry to spend $350+ for

Re: [MBZ] Fuel delivery valve job

2010-02-20 Thread LWB250
If you have an authorized Bosch injector shop in the area, take the set out and
asked them to bench them. This is essentially just putting them in the test
stand and checking hem for proper pressure and spray pattern.

They may just tell you that they will rebuild them for $x dollars each, which
is fine. Just ask that they calibrate them to within 1-2 bar for the set.
It's not that big of a deal for a good injection shop to do, and it will make a
difference in how well the engine runs.

Be sure to get a new set of sealing rings for reinstalling them.

OK, The noise is probably more loud
than I initially thought.   I cracked the
fuel line connections where they attach to the injectors and
made sure all air was out.   It was dark but
I think I got the air out.  I was surprised at how
little fuel came out with each squirt.

Next,  Using a long screwdriver I put one end again
the fuel pipe at each DV the other end against my ear
listening for sounds.  All sounded pretty smooth with a
soft bumping/whooshing sound.  So then I did the same
thing with the end of the screwdriver against the fuel line
where it connected to each injector. #'s 3, 4 5 were
 louder than #'s 1 2.

I'm thinking I should have the injectors serviced or buy
new ones.  What's the preferred method?
Are the injectors Rusty sells matched ?  If so, does
that make the choice to go with Rusty?

Sitting in the car with doors windows closed the
engine is pretty quiet - but when idling there is a distinct
soft klunking.  I'd probably live with it but if my
wife is going to come home and tell me how bad the noise is
(to her) I'll need to do something. (besides close the
 windows.)  ;-)

I think the shops around here charge around $30/injector to clean and
calibrate. If you need a new nozzle it's not a lot more.

Unless you have a pop tester handy you have no business changing out the
nozzles yourself, as you have no idea what the pattern is like when they have
been replaced, or if they are properly sealing.

 One more question -
Rusty has the Fuel Inj. Nozzles for ~$30 ea. and the
 Injectors for ~$72 ea.

If the Nozzle is the only part to ever need service the
 choice is easy - buy
a nozzle but it appears other parts inside the injector
 body may need to be
 replaced at some point.

But I cannot decide which is the best buy??

Has anyone been through this recently?  I'm in no
 hurry to spend $350+ for
new Injectors - even $150+ for nozzles is no
 picnic.   BTW, anybody have an
idea of how much a shop might charge to service (whatever
 that means) the
 injectors?  (I'm in Va).

Re: [MBZ] 124, 126 rear subframe

2010-02-20 Thread Peter Frederick
Check the frame bushings on the rear anti-sway bar too -- when they get old,
hard, and shrink, the bar rattles in them.

Bad bushings on the rear subframe usually allow it to rotate up at the front,
this causes rear tire wear and goofy up and down behavior of the rear
suspension.

On the 123, I used the armstrong tool and a big screwdriver to pull

get the bolts started, then tightened the bolts until everything
bottomed out.

I have done nearly everything i needed a reference for. One nice
things about the 123 is that you really don't need a manual if you
have worked on other cars. I don't want to part with them though,
