Mid to late 70's Chevy V8s were terrible about roasting starters. As
noted, this won't be the case if you have "vapor lock" in the
injection lines.
I'd lean toward a leak on the suction side of the fuel system. I'm

There is no rust to speak of. Just one small area behind passenger rear
wheel. None anywhere else. This car has been in CA and AZ ll its life.

Peter, It took me a while to get to this due to computer
problems. I guess this was meant for me with the mention of the
Chevy. The van has a new starter. I replaced it and installed the
heat shield that was missing as I also thought that might be one

Removed the transaxle. Drained the oil, there was a lot of metal in the
oil. Shimmering, like metallic paint. But, my guess is it's never been
changed in 25 years so that might not be surprising.

Truly a fine example of perseverance! One end of the spring was off in the
SLC I had, I never could get it back where it belonged. The trunk lid would
not stay open of it's own accord.

It lost power while I was pulling away from a stop light, when I put it in
neutral as I was coasting off of the road, the engine instantly stopped. Now
I cannot turn the engine over by handeven with a 24" breaker bar on the
27mm socket.
