Re: [MBZ] Steering box slop

2010-07-08 Thread Barry Stark
Rich -
Play can be from a couple of places and the box may be one of those. If you
have checked the rest of the system per 46-110 of the manual and all those
sources of wear are tight then you very well may have play in the box. David
was almost correct in that the later 126s have automatic compensation for
play incorporated in their design but this is only effective then the box
is in the centered position. It is nothing more than a spring loaded plunger
pushing on the working piston that more or less hides any play that exists
when you are driving down a straight road. There is an adjustment that may
help you and that is a method to adjust out play by adjusting the
relationship between the teeth on the pitman shaft and the teeth on the
working piston. This however can be overdone which will accelerate the wear
on those teeth and set you up for play than cannot be adjusted out. The
procedure is laid out in 46-480 of the manual and incorporates a few special
tools which you most likely will not have. A number of folks have come
pretty close to the proper relationship just by feel. Don't try and take all
the play out or you may cause the wear I mentioned, just try and get the
over center feel. If you care to give it a try I suggest that you somehow
mark the position of the adjusting screw so that, if it just doesn't feel
right you can reset it to where you originally found it. Remember CCW to
tighten.
As it turns out I just finished replacing my steering gearbox with a
good used donor unit. Mine is an '81 SD 126.120 and it did not have the
compensation for play so for the replacement I chose a later box that does
have it. When I got my car it was obvious that there was a problem as the
adjustment I mentioned did absolutely nothing. When I changed the ATF in the
power steering wheel it was totally filthy. Yuck! I always had wear, slop,
right at the service limit but I just lived with it. Just recently the box
developed an oil leak and needed to be re-sealed. When I broke it down the
problem was obvious, it had been adjusted too tight and had really advanced
wear on the teeth I mentioned. The pitman shaft and working piston are sold
as a set and that set was like $400. A rebuilt is typically $500 and if you
go that route make sure the mechanic that does it really knows what is doing
or you will not be happy. New ones you ask...like $3K. The going wrecking
yard price is $100. The one I got was a bonus as it looked like the box had
been recently re-sealed.

After washing the 84 300SD a little while ago I decided to check as to
why there is slop in the steering. The steering wheel will go10-15deg
back and forth loose, no tire movement or anything in the linkages. I
reached down and twisted the shaft at the steering box, and the box is
what is loose, and is sorta rattling a bit. I take that to mean the
steering box either needs to be adjusted to tighten it up a bit
 (through
the magic procedure) or replaced with one that is not rattly and loose.

I'm not sure that this has any bearing on engine compression. The car in
question starts easily in warm temperatures. We are debating whether a
loose fitting on the compression tester OR a weak starter motor on the
tested car could influence the gauge readings significantly in a lower
 direction.

There are 2 reasons that doesn't work.
#1. The weak battery eats up some of the power
#2. The jumper cables aren't big enough/well connected enough to deliver
full amperage to really spin the starter
over. Thats why its all hell to start a car with a really dead battery

[MBZ] Life without an oil cooler

2010-07-08 Thread Curt Raymond
Anybody remember that I removed the oil cooler from my 240D? That was last fall
I think. Well I've been driving without it (probably 10,000 miles or more)
since then and nothing terrible has happened. Except lately the temp has been
unacceptably high. Hardly a shocker since we're in the middle of a heatwave.
With the outside temp in the mid to high 90's I couldn't really drive over
65mph for any prolonged time as the needle would rise perilously high (who
knows how hot exactly, above the 100C mark anyway) until I wussed out and
slowed down.

Well rather than put in the new oil cooler I noticed a wet spot on the lower
radiator hose and yesterday while I was running errands I stopped at the local
CarQuest to see if they had the hoses. They had the upper and got me the lower
today. Had a radiator cap too, made in Mexico, nice looking cap. The one on the
car is so corroded I can't read it anymore. I put it on 6 or 7 years and
~70,000 miles ago...

I was surprised how little coolant I lost in the replacement, no big whoop. I
guess its mostly full of G05 now, I've been doing a running project coolant
change changed a bunch when I did the water pump (and as it leaked just before
I did the water pump) and more now. What came out was pretty yellow.

Took a little ride and it rose more than I liked, could be just needing to burp
though, I'll add more once it cools off and see how it does tomorrow. If its
still real hot I'll put the oil cooler in.
If the red car were registered I'd just drive that until it cooled off again,
we won't be at these temps for too much longer. ;) Heck I may put the new oil
cooler in no matter what just since I've got it. Or not, it depends on how hot
it is Saturday.

2010-07-08 Thread Hendrik Fay
That's not so, in 89 when they introduced the 300TE, they dropped the
230TE as being too underpowered for station wagen duty.
From memory they had trouble engineering the turbo engine into a RH
drive vehicle because the steering box was in the way. Unfortunately we
never got the NA Diesel engine in a S124 either, due to aforementioned
reasons. I did toy with the idea of sticking a Diesel in the family
truck but the problem is the SLS, not long after I bought the TE, there
was damaged 300D on offer via ebay but the car was in Melbourne.
Interesting that the US never got a Diesel 202, you did get a Diesel
201, did you not?

They have the same part number _now_, but did they always? A
larger-for-R134a finned beast could supersede an R12-only unit

Or, the converted thing didn't get rid of all the old immiscible

Or, the expansion valve is sufficiently different.

84-85 we got the 601, but ours were 2.2L instead of 2.0L (the vast majority are
automatic, so we need that extra 200cc).
86-89 we got the 602, with fewer than 2000 of the 1987s being turbos. Automatic
only with the turbo, and precious few, 5% I think, of the 602NA were 5sp. 90-93
we only got the 2.3 8v and 2.6 12v gassers. You probably had the W202 in 1993.

On the Nippndenso compressors it's not bad, but you do need to clean
fhe front very well and have a clean workspace if you do not have the
tools to pull the seal parts with the front cover on. Otherwise, you
pull the front cover after removing the clutch and bearing assembly,
swap the bits, and put it back together.

I've done two, both work fine.
