That's interesting about the rear speakers. The shop that put in the new Becker Monza and manual antenna just tested them for receiving power and said there was power to the rear but not the speakers. . The Alpines in Hammie work but crackle, I presume the moisture from the leaking rear window was killing them. Turns out they were crackly because one had apiece of duct tape(!?!) inside. Installed in Dwight's car they sound pretty good for crappy speakers but are really too big for the holes and look much less awesome than what was there. Re: [MBZ] Dash warning lights
You got it, and yes it is a pretty easy job. Caliper does not need to come off, you just remove one bolt and it flips open. New bolt with lock-tite coating should come in box with new pads. I HIGHLY recommend the Akebono ceramic pads, but you may need to replace the rotors at same time to avoid a noisy outcome. I know of at least one fellow who didn't put in new rotors and had no noise problems, so you might get lucky if you keep your old rotors (assuming they're still in spec. for thickness). -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Donald Snook Sent: Wednesday, August 11, 2010 9:31 AM To: 'Mercedes@okiebenz.com' Subject: [MBZ] Dash warning lights I think I know the answer to my first question. Siphon some brake fluid out of the master cylinder, lower bolt comes out, caliper swing up, old pads slide out, compress caliper piston, new pads slide in, caliper swings back down, top off brake fluid if necessary. Re: [MBZ] Dash warning lights
It might be fluid too, but probably pads. If your car is anything like the 123 and 126, jacking up the corner and taking off the wheel takes more effort than changing the pads. On my cars, you punch out the two pins holding the pads in (small hammer on a punch or nail to push them out), remove the little spring clips, you will probably need to do some prying to push the piston out a bit, but then the pads will come right out and the new ones should drop right in (you might have to do some pressing on the piston again as the new pads will be thicker, and maybe bevel the edge that goes in first just a bit). Quite simple. You will need to replace the sensors, they just go into a hole in the pads and connect to the connector. You don't need to remove calipers at all (at least on my cars). Check the rotor to see if it is worn too much (big ridge outside the pads). --R On 8/11/2010 9:31 AM, Donald Snook wrote: I think I know the answer to my first question. I used a special tools. Definitely get the Mercedes sliding fluid or spray them with silicon to aid installation. If you do the tie rods, mark the cam bolts to the frame with a chisel or sharpie so you can get them close. Be ready for an alignment when you are done. Re: [MBZ] OT: nice story related to the car hobby
Hi Max, Thank you. We are a non-profit, and not presently in a position to hire anyone for the voc ed piece. I would love to do that, but it is just not in our funding now. Maybe down the road a bit. So at this point we are seeking volunteer mentors, and we have gotten several responses, including a guy who builds and races cars. (An AC Cobra, and a '65 Mustang, among others.) We are also not far from the US Navy Sub Base, and we are hoping to connect with some folks there. We have had great experiences with Navy servicemen over the years. We also have to be careful how we implement programming so as to not run afoul of any DMV regulations regarding auto repair, sales, etc. As my son always reminds me... we are an automotive society... if you can teach a kid to work on a car, he will never starve. It is a life skill, a valuable qualification for employment, and it is transportable (no pun intended) wherever you live. And just a great recreational hobby, if nothing else. Since not ALL of the kids in our program will be going to Harvard or Yale (we do have one who graduated from Annapolis, btw!), this kind of vocational training could be crucial to their ultimate success. Its for the front brakes, right? If it is the brake pads, is that an easy job? I know its easy for a lot of you, but what about a beginner? I got some repair records with the car from the PO, who owned it for three years. She drove it 74,000 miles in those three years, and spent a little over $7,000 on repairs. Replaced items include: Radiator Fuel pump Expnsion tank Lateral acceleration sensor Locking system access module Battery Power steering pump Windshield Water pump Idler pulley Belt The AC was fine yesterday - it was blowing so cold that I had to turn it down - it was 102F outside, and the car had been sitting in the sun all day. Today, it barely cooled at all, and only when the car was moving. It ws like the compressor shut off when idling, and turned back on (most of the time) when moving - this was all driving in town, 40mph max. Might this be due to low R134a? -- OK Don 2001 ML320 1992 300D 2.5T 1991 300E 1990 300D 2.5T ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] ML320 status
You can get a recharge can with a gauge at the auto parts for not much ($15-20 if that much), it has pressure zones to show you where it is (and some numbers too). I would get that and put it on the low side with the MAX setting on the control to make the compressor run (watch to see if the clutch engages), rev it up a bit (like 1500-2000rpm) and see if it drops down too much, or starts sucking refrigerant. It might be something else, but that is the first thing I would check. On my truck, the compressor will not kick in when the ref is too low, or it will kick off and cycle until it sucks in enough ref to get it to where it engages and stays engaged pretty much constantly with the MAX settting and proper ref pressure. A real AC guy would probably say that is all FOS but it seems to work with just the can gauge. --R On 8/11/2010 6:26 PM, OK Don wrote: I got some repair records with the car from the PO, who owned it for three years. The outside temp dropped to un der 95, so I went out to check out the AC. The compressor runs for 2 seconds, cycles off for 7 seconds, then back on for two, etc. The off cycle seems a little longer at higher RPMs ~2000, but the one cycle might be a bit shorter. Make sure you didn't set the controls strange and that you don't have the temp wheel set too high. However, unless you lost a temperature sensor, sounds like it's low on freon. If you have the gauge set on, the low side will drop any time the compressor is on, but what you need to watch is the high side. Less than about 50 psi shuts off the compressor. Less than about 150 psi on the high side you won't get much cooling at 95 F. We didn't change the controls from yesterday. The low side did drop from the max on the low gauge to about 70 in the two seconds the compressor ran. I didn't connect the high side - so don't know what happened there. I'll do that tomorrow. How do you add freon if the compressor isn't running? Find a pressure or temp switch and open or short the wires, as needed? I found a note in one of the service tickets from the PO that stated that the expension valve would need to be replaced sometime in the future. That was in 2008 when she had freon added, and there was a charge for UV dye on the ticket. My observation of the compressor sysling was after it had been sitting for four hours after the last drive - it was much cooler. The engine temp was around 90C putzing around town in the 102F heat - I didn;t think that was too bad, thoughI'd perferred that it was 85C. I think the engine would have been hotter if the fan wasn't pulling enough air through the condensor/radiator. Re: [MBZ] ML320 status
If you have 70 psi with the compressor off, it has plenty of freon to cool at least decently. Look for a loose wire, a slipping drive belt (if you have two belts, there may not be a speed sensor), and try switching to max cold to see if it runs then. A bad evaporator temperature switch will shut the compressor off it it falsely senses that the evaporator is reaching 32F -- I'm not sure if shorted or open is the case here, depends on which type of thermistor is used. check the wiring for the evaporator temp sensor to make sure it's not partially unplugged or intermittantly shorted. You could also have a bad low pressure switch. It will be on the receiver/dryer, uplug the two tails and short them together. If the compressor then runs properly and you get cold air, it's the switch. Best to do this with the gauges installed, as it wont' take long with no charge to lock up the compressor -- no lubrucation! Also make sure your KLIMA relay is good (may be expensive if it's a combined relay instead of separate!) -- this is another place where you can get intermittant operation. Re: [MBZ] Mazda 626 diesel
If it is the same as the Ford Diesel, it is a knockoff of the VW diesel. It is pretty robust. Ours never had a hickup, other than the recall for the head gasket. I replaced the gasket on ours at 110k after it started to leak coolant. The head and cylinders were perfect at that time. The body rotted away, but the engine would go 500k I am sure. Like a VW, you have to change the timing belt every 60 K or less. and the ford has 2 timing belts. Regular on the front, and a small one from the rear of the camshaft to drive the backwards IP. But how can it be eco friendly! It runs on oil!! Reminds me of the VW clean burn 3 cyl diesels in europe. 50 somthing mpg, amazing power, but they fail the kalifornicationa sniffer test at idle by some super small amount, and thus are not importable in the us. The emissions systems kept the cruft at about the same level for most of the usefull engine speed/load range as well. Hmm. Lets see. It gets roughly twice the mileage of the same car in gas. It fails by a super small ammount. It stands to reason that it won't be idled for 12 hours a day either. Should factor the mpg rating into the sniffer test thresholds IMHO... Re: [MBZ] 124 rear suspension rebuild - who's BTDT?
The secret of making the process of changing the links easier, and especially yhe tie rod, is to drop the rear subframe on one side, change the subframe mounts. It is way easy compared to a 123. While the subframe is down, replace all the links and tierod. To change the diff mounts, the book talks about another special puller. I don't know if you need it or not. I never changed them. When you are changing the diff mounts, you may want to drop out the exhaust and then drop the whole subframe. Then you can install the whole subframe after everything is replaced/refurbished. On the 123, I dropped out the subframe. On the 124, I didn't. IMHO, replacing 124 links w/o replacing the subframe mounts is a waste of time, unless you have evidence of the subframe mounts being only a year or two old. no special tools needed, except for the lower bushing in the wheel carrier. I took mine off and took them to a tire/alignment shop, along with the new bushings from Rusty. It cost me a few bucks, but I didn't need any special tools. I had tried sockets/bolt/washers, but got nowhere. Don't bother replacing links unless you also replace the bushing in the wheel carrier. It usually wears out first. It makes a big difference in the camber. all the new links are 201 numbers and use smaller bolts. You have to have the bolt kits. even so, I had to salvage some bushings from the old links to get everything to fit up tight. If you tell Rusty that you need all the links, the bolt kits and the tie rods, you should be good. If you wait until I work on a 124, the next month Rusty will put the whole works kits on sale for 124s. Sounds like you're doing it right. I replaced most of the rear links on the '90 124. I could not get the tie rods (with the ball joints) off at the chassis end, and they didn't look that bad. I also replaced the tie rods and lower ball joints in the front end, and got it aligned. It's a lot better now, but I think I need to go ahed and replace the mounts, as you plan to do next.
