Re: [MBZ] Test Refrigerant
Well, I made a side-tapper out of a regular R12 tap, a coathanger, and two vise-grips. (Cut coathanger wire to length and twist two loops on the ends, and use the vise grips to clamp the loops together thus trapping the can tap against the can. One on each side. There, now it won't go anywhere and you pierce the can and then charge. Later I made a much more convenient tap out of a camp stove that mates with the test refrigerant can.) The rest of the equipment was pretty normal, in procurement and use. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] The next Erma Bombeck?
I got this email from #1 Daughter today: Earlier in the week, I had talked her through replacing the negative battery cable on the SDL by herself. I was quite proud of her since she has never turned a wrench before, and always ran away when I tried to get her to work on a car. Before changing the cable, I had talked her through charging the battery, taking the neg terminal off, cleaning it and putting the terminal back on. Having FLAPS test the battery, Checking the positive terminal etc. She called me yesterday that the car was dead in a store parking lot. No lights, or buzzers. No headlights or parking lights. This was a battery that had suffered trauma a couple of years ago, so after all the prior work and testing, I had pretty much concluded that the battery may have an internal intermittent open circuit. She had already called her friend Keeley to come help her. They wanted to try to jump the battery. I had suggested taking it out and going a short distance to oreally and getting a new battery. I told her to call me back and let me know what happened. She never called but swmbo got a text much later that the battery tested ok. QUOTE* I thought I should paint this scenario for you... I have learned far more about the car battery than I ever thought possible...far more than I've ever wanted to know. Keely has little experience working on cars, as you could probably guess. Luckily Keely's boyfriend had jumper cables, but he didn't want to come help. So he showed her what to do as far as hooking it up on her car. Her battery is different so I'm glad, because it looked weird to me lol. He showed her and then he made her do it and watched her do it to make sure she got it right. He was going to send her with his car to come jump my car, but when he fully realized neither of us had jumped a car before, he decided it was better that she take her car rather than his lol. So, she came to rescue me. I knew she had said he showed her what to do, so I asked what he told her so that we were on the same page. I guess he didn't tell her which order to put everything on in, just how to do it on her car. So, we're unwinding and straightening out the cables and discussing this, which didn't take that long to discuss. Then we just stood there holding the cables (she was holding one set/side, I was holding the other set/side) trying to muster up the courage to actually give it a try. We discussed how we didn't want to blow up or get electrocuted. Somewhere in there, she got bit by a fire ant. She felt it big time. I thought she had gotten bit before, but she had never reacted like that, so she decided she didn't think it had ever been a fire ant. So I welcomed her to the south and said that was her Southern Initiation lol. Then we went back to talking about jumping the car. We finally decided we had stood around enough and it was time to just go for it. There were several comments (while laughing the whole time and being deliberately overdramatic) of it's been nice knowing you, it was fun while it lasted, you only live once, and the world is going to end anyway someday. We hooked them up, high fived, took them off, high fived again, and laughed about our initial hesitation to hook it up lol. After that, we hooked up the cables again, I turned the key, the lights came on, the glow light went out and the car started. So we took the cables off, in the correct sequence. How's that for a funny email story? :) ***END QUOTE After she got the car going, she went to FLAPS, had them test the battery again, and found out the battery was good. After she got home, she figured out the POSITIVE cable was loose. Either she loosened it or the FLAPS people loosened it. After I talked her through checking and tightening the cables before she put on the new Neg cable, I had her take the positive terminal off clean and reset it and tighten. I am pretty sure she did actually tighten it. Oh well! She figured it out and saved $100+ for a battery, and my old, ugly battery lives on. I thought the story was funny and might entertain some here. Those with young daughters, take note! Even if the early training doesn't stick, having to pay their own bills and clean up their own messes brings about change. I keep telling her she can have her SLK whenever she earns enough to buy and maintain one. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I presently have a Honda powered [8 hp] one that puts out 3500 psi at the tip. It has the quick disconnect tip set which I find very handy since it allows lots of variation in the washers use. I also purchased a separate attachment for it that uses water pressure to blast sand. Previous sand blasters I've had used air pressure and were always over tasking the compressors. At 3500 PSI water pressure , not the case. Talk about power cleaning !!! Down to bare metal in seconds. Obviously, do not use it on sheet metal parts. In the past year of use, no problems with the engine or wash pump. I suggest that for winter storage you want to use a product called Staybil in the gas tank which keeps the fuel from turning to varnish, and make sure the hoses and pump are drained of water if you are above the freeze line. Bigger cost more money, so the question to be answered is what do I really want to use it for... a smaller unit with 2000 PSI pressure will do a nice job if you are only washing your car of hosing off the deck, but if you run mud bogs and have sea gulls on the deck you will need more volume and pressure, thus more cost. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Ot motorhomes
I also had a 5.9 cummins 1993 gulfstream. It had 190 hp and it got about the same mileage. It was woefully underpowered. I also had the 4 speed transmission vs the 6 speed. I had a fried that had 5.9 cummins that had 230 hp with the 6 speed transmission and it got better mileage and had improved performance. The 454 is probably better in some ways than the 190 cummins in my opinion (tho it was a pusher and hence quieter). I would prefer the 230 tho over the 454. The 454 is a good gas motorhome. I think for the dollar and value it would be great. I agree that the gas mileage difference is not much different (if any). Again, it comes down to how fast you go. With the 190 you can not go over about 60-65 and hard to maintain even 55 over modest hills. -Original Message- From: Kaleb C. I did change out the rakes and rotors on it and the parts were cheap. The parts are pretty much one on chevrolet truck parts. The air conditioner never worked very well so, you eed a generator to make sure your roof air conditioners work. I think 2 AC's re best (for southern climes). I do recommend that you have a gasoline enerator vs a propane generator. It is a pain to have to do both propane and asoline at the stops. I would definately check out the engine/trans with omeone as the cost to exchange those out equal the cost of the motorhome. I resently have a diesel and love it, but I did pay more than 5k for it. For 5K ou can have a lot of fun if you don't have costly mechanical problems. I will say the 454 was a good runner. -Original Message- From: Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] Ot motorhomes
Well, I think the benefit of the motorhome over the truck camper combo is that the trip there in the motorhome is better. If one is going to be at one spot for a longer time then I really believe that a truck trailer is better. But, if one is going to be some where for only a day or two then a motorhome is pretty much ready to go in a moments notice. Also the frige is full (hopefully) and the bed is there for passengers to rest while the on the road. It beats the heck out of trying to sleep in an auto. To get better mileage then you almost have to have a smaller diesel motorhome. The 30+ foot jobs by in large are not going to get over 10mpg. The smaller ones can. You basicly have a house going down the highway. The bigger the house, the heavier and hence less mpg. -Original Message- From: Rick Knoble rickkno...@hotmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Fri, Jun 24, 2011 11:08 am Subject: Re: [MBZ] Ot motorhomes crap. This is in rural Oklahoma with little to no regulation, so those should not be a hurdle to deal with. Thanks, OK Don Google! There is a fair amount of information on the net. This is something that appeals to me as well. My thoughts were more in terms of filtering water from the shower and re-using it to flush toilets. We live in a city that meters and sells us water and charges us sewer rates as well based upon water consumption. I could save $$ if I re-cycled the cleaner water. However, my reading of the subject on the net sort of caused me to hold off as the issue of filtering seemed like it might be difficult or expensive. The water can become rancid (not sure if that would be the correct term). My basic thought was a swimming pool filter but that was about as far as I got before I backed off. I also suspect that this sort of thing would not meet plumbing codes although I see items in the local papers touting the idea so it might come to pass that it is OK before long. Re: [MBZ] OT: Gray water recycling systems
As long as your leach lines and the leach field of the septic system are not clogged with roots or biological waste... eh... the septic system should be happy with household water volume. I would suggest that you quickly go buy some enzyme to put into the septic system. Only takes a few spoonfuls in each toilet to start the little bugs and they grow and eat what is sent down the pipes. It will make your septic tank last a long time between pump outs and save you a bunch of trouble. If the tank hasn't been pumped out for 5 years, and it was a family of 4, strongly suggest a call to your local guy who does septic pump outs and start clean if there is such a thing in septic world. I think it will good to minimize the load on the septic system, and my wife plans to maintain a lot of plants and trees, not to mention the gardens she has in mind. Congratulations to both you and your daughter! Yes, I enjoyed the story. Thanks. My youngest one is all about learning to do it herself (now that she's out fo the house), but the older two still want someone else to do it for them. Luckily, they are both married --- On Thu, Jun 23, 2011 at 10:29 PM, Dieselhead 126die...@gmail.com wrote: I got this email from #1 Daughter today: Earlier in the week, I had talked her through replacing the negative battery cable on the SDL by herself. -- OK Don 2001 ML320 1992 300D 2.5T 1990 300D 2.5T 1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to

[MBZ] 190D Adventure!
Leaving home this morning I noticed the starter on my 190D sounded odd, kind of slow like. I didn't pay much attention but when I left work the engine turned over once and then refused to turn again. I borrowed a boost pack which did nothing, it claimed the battery had 12.8v. So I figure the starter has packed in. I borrowed a strap and convinced my friend to tow start my car with his Infinity G35x. He was very uncomfortable with this idea especially when I admitted that I'd never bump started an automatic transmission car before. I came through in the end though, we got it up around 20mph, I put 'er in gear and nothing happened, I brought it down to 3 and within maybe 20 feet the engine was running. Worst part was untying the borrowed strap. The car has been delivered to my Indy, tomorrow I'm going to buy 3 proper tow straps, 1 to go in my car, 1 for the Infinity (everybody should have a tow strap) and one for the guy we borrowed a tie down strap from. And an F250 will be scrunched by a Kenworth and the Kenworth will be splatted by a 747, whats your point? I'm of the opinion that fullsize pickups have gotten stupid big lately. You obviously don't drive very far... With a 115 mile a day commute 26mpg doesn't cut it. Its not the cost that bothers me its having to stop and tank up... With the 190D I stop 3 times every 2 weeks for about 12 gallons. This car is doing ~35mpg, the '85 5spd did more like 38. The problem is we're still in the learning about each other phase (I've only put just under 10,000 miles on) so stuff is still breaking. I'm starting to get ahead of the curve though so we're getting more trouble free driving after each repair. The issue is I've got a ton of projects and not a ton of time. The 240D needs (NEEDS!) fuel lines which considering it MUST ferry me to the airport on Sunday (off to Argentina no less) will be addressed tomorrow. Until the 190D went down today I was probably going to do those lines tomorrow, now I have no choice. -Curt Date: Fri, 24 Jun 2011 20:55:35 -0400 From: Allan Streib str...@cs.indiana.edu To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] safety Message-ID: m1y60qrapk@cs.indiana.edu Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com writes: Once my current 190D runs its course I'm thinking about a Ford Fiesta. [MBZ] Ignition Switch replacement 91 300D W124
Hi Gang - Just rec’d a new Ign. Sw. with Key from Rusty and after reading the WSM I thought I knew how to replace it! Bt, Wrong. I was able to remove the surrounding trim but rubber boot was a challenge. There’s no way it’s coming off. The WSM says to remove the trim with a small screw driver but it’s more than that. It’s more of a rubber boot that extends from the keyhole to the tumbler housing. The WSM makes it look like the boot is just around the key hole. Maybe the manual is for a earlier/later model? Anyway, I put the surround back in place and I’m pretty sure the tumbler assy. will last for a while. Any ideas? House I grew up in had a septic tank, and a separate drain for the grey water. We lived on a hill side, drain left the basement toward down hill until it came out of the hill side, about 75 feet from the house but only about 25 feet from the well that supplied our fresh water. The septic tank and field went off at a 90 degree from the grey water drain and well. Max -- Sent from my Android phone with K-9 Mail. Please excuse my brevity. It's too bad straight propane doesn't work as well as propane+isobutane according to Jim's experiments. If the former were the case I bet you could find the parts at McMaster or somewhere to make an adapter to hook a 1 lb propane bottle directly to the center connection on the A/C gauge set. That would be a nice tidy solution. You also need this charging doohickey, as the test refrigerant is one of Can A plus as much of Can B as it needs to start acting right.
