[MBZ] New computer

2012-02-18 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
My old computer I think we discussed on here a while back died
back in August. Since them, I have been reading emails from my
work laptop. I have my mail configured to where my home desktop
is my main computer that I store all downloaded mail on since the
beginning of time. So, this whole time when reading mail from my
laptop the messages were still left on the server. I was only
reading a couple of my accounts, and my email list admin account
was not one of them which is why it would take my quite a long
time to approve messages that needed to be approved. So, I
finally ordered up some parts, built me a brand new computer, and
am in the process of getting everything set back up. First order
of business was to get thunderbird installed, and transferred all
my old mail/settings etc from the old hard drive to the new. Now
its fired up for the first time since august. Right now I am in
the process of downloading 19k email messages just to my
ka...@striplin.net account, I am sure there are just as many if
not more from my other accounts including my parts account, my
admin account, and my various under cover email addresses for the
hitler list. Going to take me a month or longer to sort thru what
I need to keep and what I need to trash.

Re: [MBZ] Windshield Crack Repair?

2012-02-18 Thread Dieselhead
it is a stress crack. Take it back to whoever did the work. They
should replace it. it probably was not centered correctly, or is a
manufacturing defect.

I had my windshield replaced last month. After 230,000 miles it was pretty
pitted, though only one rock chip that didn't obstruct my view any. The
new windshield developed a crack while it was sitting in the parking lot at
work last week. The first time I was it, it was about 3" long. Its
growing about 1" a day. Its on the passenger side and started at the
bottom and working its way up and to farther away from my line of sight.
Is this kind of crack repairable? Or should I have the entire windshield
replaced (again) ?

Thanks,
Brian

Re: [MBZ] cracked

It was caused by a rock, not the install. I heard the rock hit the
windshield while driving, but the crack didn't appear until later that day.
 Probably the temperature change.

Yes, it was stop drilled and the crack filled with resin. The surface of
the windshield is smooth, but the crack is still somewhat visible. I was
mostly concerned about it spreading into an area that would impair my
vision. If that happens, I'll just replace it again.

It is my understanding that when there is a crack, more so a divot from
 a
rock with cracks radiating out from it, that if they can stabilize the
 area
before the cracks spread the repairs work fairly well.

Once the cracks "spider web" out from the affected area there's little
they can do to prevent them from getting worse.

Re: [MBZ] Windshield Crack Repair?

2012-02-18 Thread Dan Penoff
I'm no windshield guy, but I have done my share over the years, and in doing
so, had conversations with said repair guys about the wisdom of fixing versus
replacement.

It is my understanding that when there is a crack, more so a divot from a rock
with cracks radiating out from it, that if they can stabilize the area before
the cracks spread the repairs work fairly well.

Once the cracks "spider web" out from the affected area there's little they can
do to prevent them from getting worse.

Have a glass guy look at it and they can tell you.

Re: [MBZ] who wants a W124 Sportline?

2012-02-18 Thread E M
I think GMs are ok cars, but I don't think GM could do such a car "right".
If you look close at a car that is all, or mostly carbon in clear, getting
all the mat to line up properly is something GM couldn't do, even in small
numbers. Well, they could, but I don't think anyone is going to pay 1.5
million for a Corvette. The car isn't marketed to people who are
interested in that level of detail. (that's not a snooty poke at Corvette
owners by the way. GM got it right with the ZR1. The performance of a
$400,000 for $100,000)

The DMC12 was a cool looking car, and with panels made of stainless, was
suppose to be corrosion free and easy to maintain. Truth is, it was a pain
to keep looking nice. (they sold a special kit of cleaners for it I
believe). Something like 30+% of owners got tired of messing with it and
the effort required, and just painted them. A friend almost bought one at
auction a couple of years ago. I think they're still pretty cool looking.
:-) What other car for the money can you get where the doors open like
that, besides a Brickland. Or a slammed Civic with Lambo doors. hee hee

My dad bought a hunk o deetriot iron in the 70s that had sat around
and had 4000 miles in 10 years. It was a royal PITA. Stuff like WP,
motor mounts, and any rubber part kept failing. The engine failed
early. A 100,000 vehicle would have been probably better.

If he claims 30 mpg he's got to mean the engine was replaced and not driven.

I have a low-mile 300D that sat around for 20 years, and while the engine
has been reliable enough I've had to replace a lot of bits to keep it
operational, and it's got a long way to 100%. I would definitely rather
buy one that had been adequately maintained and driven weekly, with twice

stainless steel on the DMC-12.

I like my Look KG86 bicycle, but in that case it's totally functional. The most
weight efficient way to make it was to make the carbon tubing with UV resistant
epoxy and save the weight of paint. It also meant any flaw in the carbon layup
would be visible, so they better get it right.

But when you use visible carbon in a non-structural application, like replacing
the wood interior accents, you're just saying 'this isn't a race car, but I wish
it was'.
