We had an incident this week where an elementary student brought a toy gun to

No discipline was taken, just a Parent Link call made to all of the households

It barely made the news.

You have a group of people who want to talk about all sorts of subjects

The Mercedes Banned List will never serve as a discussion list because

Banned light? The word banned turns off a lot of people. You might
change banned light to Mercedes Social or something similar with better
results. Of course, there needs to be a little management or tough
love.
When a member keeps posting non-Mercedes items on the Mercedes list, he
needs to be banned from that list after several warnings, but not the
social list. I've never seen an internet list prosper that didn't have some
management. All this bickering turns off members who are interested in
Mercedes but not in guns, abortion, politics, etc., etc.
If you don't have time to manage the list, you can appoint a sufficient
number of moderators
to keep the Mercedes list free of non-Mercedes topics. Warnings would come
from the moderators so no individual moderator could be blamed. I belong
to a list that has 15 moderators and it works quite well.

I am enthralled hearing of Gerry's experiences, or Wilton's experiences of
growing up back in the day. It is like having a history lesson taught by
someone who lived it.
I enjoy reading of Rich's, and others home renovation sagas, both the successes
and the failures. Where else can you learn about high performance range hoods
like Alan's (sp).
I like hearing tales of ancient watches being brought back to life with an
intricate disassembly and cleaning.
I long to read about Breezy airplanes, the NTSB report on an airplane
incident, or how Georgia clay needs to be trucked to OK for a better dirt
runway.
It is gripping to be able to hear and see first hand experiences of those going
through disasters, such as Jaime's experience recently with hurricane Sandy.
Rogers contributions on Porches, which Bugatti is more exclusive, and newer
Mercedes are welcome reading too.

I could go on, but you get the point. We need off topic posts, even if we need
moderation sometimes. Thank you Kaleb for hosting this list, and thank you to

I'm saying that when a person joins the Mercedes List they should be
encouraged to also become a member of Mercedes Social or whatever you want
to call it besides Banned Light. That way, those interested strictly in
Mercedes could access only the Mercedes list, and those who want to discuss
other subjects could access Mercedes Social or both. Those who persisted in
discussing non-Mercedes items on the Mercedes list would be removed for a
variable length of time from the Mercedes list after several warnings, but
not from the social list. It wouldn't be long before everyone got the
message that the Mercedes list was strictly about Mercedes and that it would
be enforced. Moderators would probably be essential so you or a single
moderator wouldn't be targetted by someone who was removed.
You would lose some members who prefer unrestricted lists, but you would
probably see more members submitting comments and questions on the Mercedes
List.

Since this list is primarily a Right Wing list, you probably lose a good
many Moderate and Left Wing Mercedes owners. Believe it or not, there
are a lot of Moderates and Left Wingers who drive Mercedes. They would be
more inclined to join a strictly Mercedes List and buy parts from Rusty.

Of course, this is your list and there is nothing right or wrong, good or
bad about whatever you do with it.

I could go live in an HOA too but I won't.

The thing I like about this list is the offtopic talk. If I wanted to just know
about Mercedes I could go to peachparts.

Moderator is often another term for petty tyrant. I think we're lucky here
that our tyrant (he's not petty) is pretty fair and balanced. Add to that a
fairly fair and balanced population and bannings are few.

Once you start putting rules on it you ruin the discussion the same way adults

[MBZ] Serious WTF moment

2013-01-19 Thread clay monroe
Went to FLAPS to get bits for SWMBA korean car.

She took the car to the dealer for oil change yesterday and had already done
the 30k service a few months ago. Service dork comes up with a list of items
that need attention. Bunch of DIY items that they hoped to snag big $$$ for.
Thing that got me wound up was the battery. She has had the car for three
years, it was a dealer demonstrator when purchased. 2009 MY, made in 2008,
sold in 2010. Dork come out with the battery is dead and you have to pay to
get a new one. I call shenanigans. Thing has 30+k miles and the battery is
dead, not covered by warranty, and she has never allowed the battery to drain.

I concede that five years is a bit on the early side to die, but the thing
should last a bit longer in my book. Dealer got two years use out of the
battery and then passed on what may have been abused at that time, but will not
cover it. That is bad business to me. I think it should be worth keeping a
customer to swallow the $100 battery replacement.

ANYWAY, hit FLAPS to get the wipers, some washer fluid, and license plate
lamps. There on the shelf is a box of 2.5 gallons of Diesel Exhaust Fluid.
First thing that comes to my mind is Headlight fluid. Maybe this is a profit
center item for stupid customers. WTF? Turns out it is AdBlue. Donkey pee.

directed that the political stuff move there.

Did not happen because people didn't think there was a problem even though
there certainly was.

Now this list has turned into a pro-gun discussion. No, not a discussion,
but just repeated posts of the same subject with no new ideas. And that's how
the pro-Obama posts went.

What I would like to know is, has even one person changed their opinions on
these subjects because of the avalanche of posts? I doubt it very much. I
haven't seen one new idea.

clay,

what was the warranty on the original battery? no matter how long
*we* think a good one should last, many original batteries are 3-year
deals, and by that figuring you got an extra 1-2 years out of it.

(i've had 2 cases where original 3-year batteries failed within 1
month of their warranty date, one of them spewing its caustic contents
all over the engine compartment. after spending much of a weekend
scrubbing an engine compartment of a nearly new car with an acid
neutralizing goop, i'd say that if your had actually just gone dead, by
comparison, you got off easy.)

Re: [MBZ] OT GUN They took their ball and when home

2013-01-19 Thread ernest breakfield

hi Kaleb!

while the cumulative wealth of knowledge amongst the users here is
truly admirable, i (for one) think it would be wonderful if this list
was dedicated to Mercedes stuff, instead of being the chat room that
some people here clearly seem to want/need. there's plenty of places for
that (and more could be made, if necessary) but as long as people can't
seem to at least keep the Subject Lines relative to their messages
content, it makes it really hard to wade through the chaff looking for
the stuff of value. in the popular vernacular, the Signal:Noise here is
poor.

i also have to agree with Gerry; i would never have guessed that a
list named banned lite was for social banter. maybe something like
MBZ Social would better convey the tone, and those who like to play in
a cat box can still play in Banned, if that's how they like to play.

(i barely found this post, since the majority of what passes by on
this list barely gets a quick scan before meeting the Delete Key. if
Subject lines were kept relevant, it would be safe to just Delete
anything marked OT,...)

cheers!

However, issues like this tend to cause problems and I think we ought
to avoid problems when we can. We do get off topic and sometimes there
will be a whole lot of response to an off topic item and it will get
pretty boring if one is not interested. The delete key works but
unfortunately, the subject often changes somewhere along the line but
the subject heading does not so one needs to poke around a bit before
deleting if one does not want to get left behind.

I do suggest that we should for the most part stay away from subjects
that tend to make others angry. We have a nice group that participates
on a regular basis and knows a lot about MB cars and many other
things. It truly would be a shame to ruin that by angering people
about issues we should be smart enough to leave alone. You won't
change my mind about a lot of things and I am not likely to change

things that are less likely to pose problems and leave the sticky
issues for another place.

Won't work. Some years back when Obama was running for the first time and
banned was flooded with political dreck Kaleb started Banned Lite and
directed that the political stuff move there.

G: A Mercedes Social list won't work either if there are no moderators to
enforce it. That's been the experience of other lists with the same
problem.

Did not happen because people didn't think there was a problem even though
there certainly was.

Now this list has turned into a pro-gun discussion. No, not a discussion,
but just repeated posts of the same subject with no new ideas. And that's
how

the pro-Obama posts went.

What I would like to know is, has even one person changed their opinions on
these subjects because of the avalanche of posts? I doubt it very much. I
haven't seen one new idea.

G: IMHO people are primarily expressing their beliefs on discussion lists.
The need for Self expression is a universal characteristic of mankind, and
internet discussion groups are quite popular for that reason. Changing
peoples opinions seems to be a secondary goal.

[MBZ] Why were they loaded?

2013-01-19 Thread Gerry Archer

Private sales at gun show on hold after three hurt in accidental shooting

Raleigh, N.C. - Officials said the Dixie Gun and Knife Show will continue
Sunday without private gun sales after three people, including a retired
sheriff's deputy, were injured Saturday when a gun brought in by a patron
who planned to sell it accidentally discharged.
A man identified as Gary Lynn Wilson, 36, of Wilmington, brought the
12-gauge shotgun to the show at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds and was
attempting to remove it from its case when the weapon went off shortly after
1 p.m., police said.
Linwood Hester, 50, of Durham, was struck in the left hand by birdshot,
according to Joel Keith, police chief with the state Department of
Agriculture. The birdshot also struck a woman identified as Janet Hoover,
54, of Benson, and Jake Alderman, a retired sheriff's deputy from Wake
Forest who was working at the event.
Alderman was treated and released at WakeMed North Healthplex for a minor
injury, Keith said. Hester and Hoover were taken to WakeMed, where they were
treated and released later in the day.
Visitors are supposed to allow security officials to check in weapons, Keith
said, but Wilson removed the gun from its case before personnel had a chance
to handle it. The shotgun was on a table by the entry door when it
discharged.
I want to emphasize that this was an accident, Keith said. At the time,
no employee, no officer had inspected that gun.
Show-goer Emory Lewis was standing nearby when the gun discharged.
When I turned around, I heard the gun hit the table. And when I heard the
gun hit the table, I heard the shot went off, he said. And the guy that
was standing right it front of me...it went through his hand. Then I heard a
lady hollering - it went through her side somewhere.
No decision has been made about whether any charges will be filed against
Wilson, authorities said. The investigation has been turned over to the Wake
County Sheriff's Office.
The show, which is held inside the Jim Graham Building, closed for the
remainder of the day but will continue Sunday without private gun sales.
Authorities said no personal guns will be allowed on the property. Only guns
sold by licensed dealers and vendors will be allowed.
The ban is in place for Sunday, the last day of the show, but won't
necessarily be permanent, Keith said. Officials said they will review
procedures to determine whether any changes need to be made.
The Dixie Gun and Knife Show has taken place at the fairgrounds for more
than 30 years with an excellent track record for safety, officials said.
If we thought that it was a problem or a hazard or was dangerous, we would
not have this show, Keith said. Let's keep in mind this was an accident,
and I'm sure nobody hates this any more than the guy that owned that
weapon.
Although many people rushed out of the fairgrounds after the incident, Keith
said both patrons and officials remained calm during the incident.
People didn't panic, he said. People acted very responsibly, and I
couldn't have asked the officers to have acted any better.

Accidental shootings were reported at two other gun shows Saturday in
Indiana and Ohio.
In Indianapolis, police said a 54-year-old man was injured when he
accidentally shot himself while leaving a gun show. And in Ohio, a gun
dealer in Medina was checking out a semi-automatic handgun he had bought
when he accidentally pulled the trigger, injuring his friend, police said.
The gun's magazine had been removed from the firearm, but one round remained
in the chamber, police said.

http://www.wral.com/private-gun-sales-at-gun-show-on-hold-after-three-hurt-in-accidental-shooting/12000843/

It's unfortunate that these people got shot, but other than that something
like this happening during the widespread debate about gun ownership is
funny IMO.

battery. No need to have another garbage battery go in.

Is it like the starter cartridge they put in printers?
Dare we call it a starter battery?

No, and no.

If you can get a new tablet for same price, go for it.

Best cheap solution is to put a layer of screen protector over the glass to
keep from cutting your fingers.

I bought a cheap ($80) tablet the other day and it hit the floor last
night and cracked the screen. Just the glass is cracked, the display
itself appears to be fine. Is this just a normal piece of glass? If it
is, do you think I can just go to a glass shop and have them make me up
a couple? It'd be nice to have a spare for next time.
