For those who haven't had the "privilege" of working under the instrument panel in general aviation aircraft, a Cessna 182 has the wings overhead, so the floor is flat. Take out the seat and there is room to get under and behind. A Piper Cherokee is a low wing aircraft, so the wing struts occupy a large tunnel athwart the cabin so the floor is NOT flat. The experience is similar to what I would expect if I were to try to work under the dash of my W123 with the door closed and the window open. *grin* -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

It's Spring - nice weather, spending too much time outside to play on the 'puter :-) Started the C182 for the first time since I bought it today - ran nice, but found a bunch of guages that don't work. Estes park is about an hour's drive from me. I'll be flying back to PDX in a few weeks to finalize the sale of our house if the deal goes through. I'm definitely planning some scouting missions to see if there are any GOOD, cheap Mercedes Diesels to be had, and if so, I would take you up on your delivery offer. Re: [MBZ] This week's fender repair project.
Florida has laws regarding the opacity of tint. I believe the front windows can be no more than 70%, but the rears can be as much as 90%. I don't have the actual numbers at my fingertips right now, but it's something like that. I have a professional tint guy that has done all of my cars with metallized tint (not mirror tint!) that blocks UV energy. It's not cheap, but the difference it makes in heat load on the interior of the car is measurable. This makes the car much cooler inside as you might expect, as well as reducing the load on the AC when it's running. You can see through it quite well, I believe. I don't have any problems reading signs or anything else through it, even at night. As far as security, my car is always parked in my garage at home, and in a secure parking structure at work that has a security person assigned to it that walks through constantly (it's also the parking garage for the school next to our building, so to say it has heightened security would be putting it mildly.) That's not to say I haven't driven and parked it in some "sketchy" areas, but for the most part I look at anywhere I park and go for best lit and well traveled parts whenever possible. A thief, no matter how stupid, isn't going to try to do a break in where they can be easily seen or there is a constant stream of people walking by. Street crime is pretty rare around here, as is vandalism. The parts of Tampa where it might be more common are not places I go, nor would I park my car there... Re: [MBZ] This week's fender repair project.
Those "bulletproof" windows may not be hammer or tire iron proof. ;<) BTW, a year ago, heavy pipe wrench damned thief used to break into my 350SDL and '87 300D bounced twice off each of little triangle window in left rear door of the SDL and left rear passenger window in the 124. One may ask, "How do you know?" The blows left little scratch marks. The sorry SOB had to hit rear window/windshield in SDL twice to leave "imprint/shape" of the wrench in it. BTW, again, there was noting of value in view in either car; thief also FOUND nothing of value in either car, and was too stupid to know that, after he had open either front door in the cars, all he had to do to get into trunks was to push the chrome button in plain sight there beneath the trunk lids. Instead, he pried on 'em with a steel bar of some type, ruining lid on SDL. Re: [MBZ] 115 Headlight trim? How do I separate the plastic from the chrome part?
When you say "blinker lens" I assume you refer to the orange piece. It looks to me like it can be removed from the larger clear plastic part from the back of the unit. It appears that the unit was originally put together by the use of some sort of heated tool that melted the plastic to form tabs that hold the clear part into the chrome ring and also the orange part into the clear part. I think I can either use a bit of epoxy to hold the parts together or maybe heat the end of a bolt or something similar and melt the plastic near the original spots to create new tabs. I shall see how this works in due course. Right now I am trying to get an adjustment on the price given that the condition was not accurately disclosed and I have advised that I am not happy with them. They were advertised as being in good condition and the photos did not show the pitted chrome or the one spot that is broken. I think I can use them if I can salvage the inside plastic bit but I had not planned on having to do that. Based on the description and photos, I thought I would be able to just put them on the car and have my old ones as potential spares. Oh well, nothing in life is perfect I guess. Randy On 27/03/2013 6:31 PM, clay wrote: I have not been able to get the lower lens out. The back of the blinker comes off easy. You might be able to dremel tool the tabs holding it in and somehow mate it to the good chrome. Try removing the blinker lens from the good chrome. See how that works and you might be able to learn about what you need to do to get the good lens off and swapped onto where it wants to go. clay On Mar 26, 2013, at 8:48 AM, Randy Bennell wrote: Is there a way to remove the plastic from the chrome? How do you see out?? I find, as I get older, that I need more light than I used to. For example, I have a difficult time reading street signs in the dark and finding house numbers. There ought to be a requirement that houses have numbers that are large and lighted. I don't like having to walk up people's sidewalks in order to see what the house number is - and I am not really at risk of being shot like I might be down south where you are. That's not completely true - depending on where and what it is in the piece, you can build up wood in a number of different ways. The tough part is how to camouflage the work. Thanks. Interesting perspective about the wood vs metal. With wood, once the material is gone, it's gone. With metal you can always move it around and add more so for me it's easier but getting the metal to go where you want is where the challenge lies. Beautiful work. Metalwork is more of an art form than anything else, I believe. I never felt it was as forgiving as wood, which is why I have avoided it. I'm sure this is more of a matter of experience, but still, I am in awe of what some people can do with a welder and a torch. Nice. Very nice. Please show us more.
