help of the instructions below i was able to get the ACC unit out of the

were visible to the naked eye, under the microscope in a clients lab there
cracks in the solder joints exactly where indicated in the link.
a skillful tech claimed it looked like there hadn't been enough

Re: [MBZ] OT: shot Down in Flames gun propaganda!

2013-04-22 Thread WILTON
Clay, I just sent to you off-list a copy of a composition I finished
recently about bombing the jungle and other related ridiculous policies that
prolonged the Vietnam War and led to having the names of more than 58000
brave, young Americans etched into that black granite wall of honor in DC.

The attachment is 5 pages - probably a little long to post on the List,
though I'd like for everybody to see it - I think it is very relevant for
all of us.

As Wilton is very aware, you can drop tons and tons of ordinance on palm
trees and dense jungles all day, all week and all year long with minimal
effect on the will of the opposition to keep on shooting the boys on the
ground.

We flew bombers over German cities and turned them into firestorms fierce
enough to turn stone to dust, as well as bounce the rubble of houses and
factories all night long, but the war still ground on. The air power was
helpful, but the boys on the ground still had to dodge bullets and mop up
that mess before it was over.

Japan was made to glow in the early morning light of two August days
before they were willing to consider calling it quits. Air power
devastated the Islands and cities thereon. We did not get a chance to
lose our boys on the ground in Japan, but a great many did perish in the
Pacific war.

Syria is using its air power, but most of the real fighting is on the
ground. Iran and Iraq flew and bombed, but again, the boys on the ground
did most of the work. George HW Bush took 100 days to liberate Kuwait,
and that took boots on the ground, after the flyboys had expended their
loads. Even the Soviets in Afghanistan were bedeviled by ground fire
while tooling about in gunships. We are not doing any better there than
the Ruskies, and over in Saddamistan, we declared victory in a few short
weeks due to air support, but took another eight years on the ground
before we gave up. To the guys on the street corners with guns.

I don't think so.
The pro gun mob always wheel out this sort of thing because it is easy to
understand by the average gun owner, however the reality is that you
can't fight a modern army with the stuff you buy at walmart. Sure back in
the day when the most sophisticated military hardware was rifles and
cannons, you could fight an army but these days airpower is the key to
victory and I did not see any fighter jets or attack helicopters in the
gun shops. Perhaps Wilton has a B-52 stashed away in the back yard, just
in case or a few might have build a mini drone to spy on the neighbours
but I really can't see that doing much.
However I am happy enough for the gun crowd to have their little
delusions if it makes them feel happy and secure.

No point in alarming people.

I doubt it. After talking to three or four professional detailer, and I use
the term only to describe someone who is making a living doing this, none of
them really seemed interested in recovery work. I suspect there is too much
time required, and it's likely that someone who has a car in this bad of shape
either won't care or doesn't have the money to invest in recovering the finish.

Another aspect to consider that will play out over time is how long the finish
will stay this way. I have no idea if upon exposure to the elements that it may
revert back to the former condition. Hopefully, it will take some time. This
is not something I would want to be doing every month or two (but I would if

Having a good soldering iron sure helps. I have tried a lot of
low-priced soldering irons. My favorite one in the
less-than-$50 group is one from MCM Electronics that sells for
about $7.
http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/21-8125

A handy stand for it, with a sponge to clean the tip is just
over $5. Certainly not required - just handy.
http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/21-8165

Finally, good solder is necessary. My favorite is Multicore.
(formerly Ersin Multicore). 16 AWG is a useful size for medium to
small work like most through-hole PCBs - like Mercedes ACC and
cruise control boards.
http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/21-2280

That link is for a one pound [0.5 kg] spool - which will last a
lifetime for a casual user. MCM doesn't seem to have a smaller
quantity of that size. They do have a 1/2 lb spool of a smaller
solder - about 20 AWG. It would work just fine - and at $22 is
half the prices of the 1 lb spool.

That's what the Collinite 845 is. Well known in the detailing business,
Collinite 845 was originally designed to be used on high voltage insulators,
which have to be kept as clean as possible to minimize collection of dirt which
can allow conductive paths on the surfaces.

It's amazingly good stuff, and while not cheap, a 16 ounce bottle will last
several years or more if you apply it correctly.

Collinite has been around for many years and is pretty much a family business,
a lot like George at Leatherique. Another reason why I like to patronize them.

Google is your friend as always, but here is a link to their web site:

There is a technique to preparing it that is not discussed on their web site.
It has a thick, almost gelatinous texture, which makes it tough to use right
out of the bottle. Before using, you put it in a container of hot water for
about 5-10 minutes to warm it up and make it homogenous. If you don't do this
it's really difficult to use.

I have always been a hard core 3M person, but this stuff is really good and

[MBZ] The Chosen Few: A New Explanation of Jewish Success

2013-04-22 Thread Gerry Archer

Gerry wrote:
Here is a long and interesting theory of why Jews have been so successful in
many fields:

..
(Excerpt)
Why are the Jews, a relatively small population, specialized in the most
skilled and economically profitable occupations?
(An) alliance of historians and economists offers a completely novel
interpretation of the historical trajectory of the Jews from 70 to 1492. In
turn, this may help us understand several features of the history of the
Jewish people from 1500 up to today, including the successful performance of
the Israeli economy despite the recent economic crisis.
The journey of The Chosen Few begins in Jerusalem, following the
destruction of the Second Temple in the year 70, continues in the Galilee
during the first and second centuries, moves to Babylon in Mesopotamia
during the fourth and fifth centuries, and then to Baghdad in the second
half of the first millennium when the Muslim Abbasid empire reaches its
economic and intellectual apex.
At the turn of the millennium, the historical voyage reaches Cairo,
Constantinople, and Cordoba, and soon after the whole of western and
southern Europe, then turns back to Baghdad in the 1250s during the Mongol
conquest of the Middle East before ending in Seville in 1492.
During these 15 centuries, a profound transformation of Judaism coupled with
three historic encounters of the Jews -- with Rome, with Islam, and with the
Mongol Conquest -- shaped the economic and demographic history of the Jewish
people in a unique and long-lasting way up to today.
Let's first start describing the profound transformation of Judaism at the
beginning of the first millennium, which has been amply documented by
scholarly works. In the centuries before 70, the core of Judaism was
centered around two pillars: the Temple in Jerusalem, in which sacrifices
were performed by a small elite of high priests, and the reading and the
study of the Written Torah, which was also restricted to a small elite of
rabbis and scholars. (It was the power of this elite that the Jew Yeshua ben
Josef, later know as Jesus Christ, so often decried.)
The destruction of the Temple in 70 at the end of the first Jewish-Roman war
was the first of the three external events which permanently shaped the
history of the Jewish people. Momentously, it canceled one of the two
pillars of Judaism, shifting the religious leadership within the Jewish
community from the high priests in Jerusalem to a much more widely dispersed
community of rabbis and scholars. In so doing, it transformed Judaism into a
religion whose main norm required every Jewish man to read and to study the
Torah in Hebrew himself and, even more radically, to send his sons from the
age of six or seven to primary school or synagogue to learn to do the same.
In the world of universal illiteracy, as it was the world at the beginning
of the first millennium, this was an absolutely revolutionary
transformation. At that time, no other religion had a similar norm as a
membership requirement for its followers, and no state or empire had
anything like laws imposing compulsory education or universal literacy for
its citizens. The unexpected consequences of this change in the religious
norm within Judaism would unfold in the subsequent centuries..snip

[MBZ] The Good Life in Denmark

2013-04-22 Thread Gerry Archer

Denmark goes to work on lavish welfare perks

COPENHAGEN, Denmark - It began as a stunt intended to prove that hardship
and poverty still existed in small and wealthy Denmark, but it backfired.
Visit a single mother of two on welfare, a liberal member of Parliament
goaded a skeptical political opponent, see for yourself how hard it is.
It turned out that life on welfare was not so hard. The 36-year-old single
mother, given the pseudonym Carina in the news media, had more money to
spend than many of the country's full-time workers. All told, she was
getting about $2,700 a month, and she had been on welfare since she was 16.
In past years, Danes might have shrugged off the case. But even before her
story was in the headlines 16 months ago, Danes were engaged in a debate
about whether their beloved welfare state, perhaps Europe's most generous,
had become too benevolent, undermining the country's work ethic. Carina
helped tip the scales.
With little political protest - or notice abroad - Denmark has been at work
overhauling entitlements, trying to prod Danes into working more or longer
or both. While much of southern Europe has been racked by strikes and
protests as creditors force austerity measures, Denmark still has an AAA
bond rating.
Denmark's long-term outlook is troubling, though. The population is aging,
and in many regions, people without jobs outnumber those with them.
Some of that is a result of a depressed economy, but many experts say a more
basic problem is the proportion of Danes who are not participating in the
workforce, be they dawdling university students, young pensioners or welfare
recipients such as Carina who choose hefty government support.
Before the crisis there was a sense that there was always going to be more
and more, said Bjarke Moller, editor-in-chief of publications for Mandag
Morgen, a research group in Copenhagen. That is not true anymore.
Highest tax rates
The Danish model of government is close to a religion in Denmark, and it has
produced a population that regularly claims to be among the happiest in the
world. Even the country's conservative politicians are not suggesting
getting rid of it.
Denmark has among the highest marginal income-tax rates, with the top
bracket of 56.5 percent kicking in on incomes of more than about $80,000. In
exchange, Danes get a cradle-to-grave safety net that includes free health
care, a free university education and hefty payouts to even the richest
citizens.
Parents in all income brackets, for instance, get quarterly checks from the
government to help defray child-care costs. The elderly get free maid
service if they need it, even if they are wealthy.
Few experts believe Denmark can long afford the current perks, however. So
the nation is retooling, tinkering with corporate tax rates, considering new
public-sector investments and, for the long term, trying to wean more
people - the young and the old - off government benefits.
In the past, people never asked for help unless they needed it, said Karen
Haekkerup, the minister of social affairs and integration, who has been
outspoken on the subject. My grandmother was offered a pension and she was
offended. She did not need it.
Now people ... think of these benefits as their rights. The rights have
just expanded and expanded, and it has brought us a good quality of life,
but now we need to go back to the rights and the duties. We all have to
contribute.
More older people
In 2012, slightly more than 2.6 million people between 15 and 64 were
working in Denmark, 47 percent of the total population and 73 percent of the
15- to 64-year-olds.
While only about 65 percent of working-age adults are employed in the United
States, comparisons are misleading, since many Danes work short hours and
all enjoy perks such as long vacations and lengthy paid maternity leaves,
not to speak of a de facto minimum wage approaching $20 an hour. Danes would
rank much lower in terms of hours worked per year.
In addition, the workforce has far more older people to support. About 18
percent of Denmark's population is older than 65, compared with 13 percent
in the United States.
One study, by the municipal-policy research group Kora, recently found that
only three of Denmark's 98 municipalities will have a majority of residents
working in 2013. This is a significant reduction from 2009, when 59
municipalities could boast that a majority of residents had jobs. (Everyone,
including children, was counted in the comparison.)
Joachim Olsen, the skeptical politician from the Liberal Alliance party who
visited Carina 16 months ago in her pleasant Copenhagen apartment, is
particularly alarmed. He says Sweden, which is considered generous, has far
fewer citizens living on government benefits. If Denmark followed Sweden's
example, it would have about 250,000 fewer people living on benefits of
various sorts.
The welfare state here has spiraled out of control, Olsen said. It has
done a lot of good, but we have been unwilling to talk

[MBZ] Koch brothers eye bid for Tribune papers

2013-04-22 Thread Gerry Archer

More newspapers may go conservative.

Three years ago, Charles and David Koch, the billionaire industrialists and
supporters of libertarian causes, held a seminar of like-minded, wealthy
political donors at the St. Regis Resort in Aspen, Colo. They laid out a
three-pronged, 10-year strategy to shift the country toward a smaller
government with less regulation and taxes.
The first two pieces of the strategy - educating grass-roots activists and
influencing politics - were not surprising, given the money they have given
to policy institutes and political-action groups. But the third one was:
media.
Other than financing a few fringe libertarian publications, the Kochs have
mostly avoided media investments. Now, Koch Industries, the sprawling
private company of which Charles Koch serves as chairman and chief
executive, is exploring a bid to buy the Tribune Co.'s eight regional
newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, The
Baltimore Sun, The Orlando Sentinel and The Hartford Courant.
By early next month, Tribune Co. is expected to send financial data to
serious suitors in what will be among the largest sales of newspapers by
circulation in the country. Koch Industries is among those interested, said
several people with direct knowledge of the sale who spoke on condition of
anonymity. Tribune emerged from bankruptcy Dec. 31 and has hired JPMorgan
Chase and Evercore Partners to sell its print properties.
The papers, valued at roughly $623 million, would be a financially
diminutive deal for Koch Industries, the energy and manufacturing
conglomerate based in Wichita, Kan., with annual revenues of about $115
billion.
Politically, however, the papers could serve as a broader platform for the
Kochs' laissez-faire ideas. The Los Angeles Times is the fourth-largest
paper in the country, and the Tribune is No. 9, and others are in several
battleground states, including two of the largest newspapers in Florida, The
Orlando Sentinel and the Sun Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale. A deal could
include Hoy, the second-largest U.S. Spanish-language daily newspaper, which
speaks to the pivotal Hispanic demographic.
One person who attended the Aspen seminar who spoke on condition of
anonymity described the strategy as follows: It was never 'How do we
destroy the other side?'?

It was 'How do we make sure our voice is being heard?'?
Guests at the Aspen seminar included Philip Anschutz, the Republican oil
mogul who owns the companies that publish The Washington Examiner, The
Oklahoman and The Weekly Standard, and hedge-fund executive Paul Singer, who
sits on the board of the political magazine Commentary. Attendees were asked
not to discuss details about the seminar with the media.
At this early stage, the thinking inside the Tribune Co., the people close
to the deal said, is that Koch Industries could prove the most appealing
buyer. Others interested, including a group of wealthy Los Angeles residents
led by billionaire Eli Broad and Ronald Burkle, both prominent Democratic
donors, and Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., would prefer to buy only the Los
Angeles Times.
The Tribune Co. has signaled it prefers to sell all eight papers and their
back-office operations as a bundle. (The $7 billion media company, which
owns 23 television stations, could also decide to keep the papers if they do
not attract a high enough offer.)
Koch Industries serves as one of the largest sponsors of libertarian causes,
including the financing of policy institutes such as the Cato Institute in
Washington, D.C., and the formation of Americans for Prosperity, the
political-action group that helped galvanize tea-party organizations and
their causes. The company has said it has no direct link to the tea-party
movement.
Koch Industries recently brought on Angela Redding, a consultant based in
Salt Lake City, to analyze the media environment and assess opportunities.
Redding, who previously worked at the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation,
did not respond to requests for comment.
At least in politically liberal Los Angeles, a conservative paper could be
tricky. David Koch, who lives in New York and serves as executive vice
president of Koch Industries, has said he supports gay marriage and could
align with many residents on some social issues, Reed Galen, a Republican
consultant in Orange County, Calif., said.
Koch Industries' main competitor for the Los Angeles Times is a group of
mostly Democratic local residents. In the 2012 political cycle, Broad gave
$477,800, either directly or through his foundation, to Democratic
candidates and causes, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
Burkle has long championed labor unions. President Clinton served as an
adviser to Burkle's money-management firm, Yucaipa, which in 2012 gave
$107,500 to Democrats and related causes. The group also includes Austin
Beutner, a Democratic candidate for mayor of Los Angeles, and an investment

As Wilton is very aware, you can drop tons and tons of ordinance on palm
trees and dense jungles all day, all week and all year long with minimal
effect on the will of the opposition to keep on shooting the boys on the
 ground.

We flew bombers over German cities and turned them into firestorms fierce
enough to turn stone to dust, as well as bounce the rubble of houses and
factories all night long, but the war still ground on. The air power was
helpful, but the boys on the ground still had to dodge bullets and mop up
that mess before it was over.

Japan was made to glow in the early morning light of two August days before
they were willing to consider calling it quits. Air power devastated the
Islands and cities thereon. We did not get a chance to lose our boys on the
ground in Japan, but a great many did perish in the Pacific war.

Syria is using its air power, but most of the real fighting is on the
ground. Iran and Iraq flew and bombed, but again, the boys on the ground
did most of the work. George HW Bush took 100 days to liberate Kuwait, and
that took boots on the ground, after the flyboys had expended their loads.
Even the Soviets in Afghanistan were bedeviled by ground fire while tooling
about in gunships. We are not doing any better there than the Ruskies, and
over in Saddamistan, we declared victory in a few short weeks due to air
support, but took another eight years on the ground before we gave up. To
the guys on the street corners with guns.

 I don't think so.
The pro gun mob always wheel out this sort of thing because it is easy to
understand by the average gun owner, however the reality is that you can't

As Wilton is very aware, you can drop tons and tons of ordinance on palm
trees and dense jungles all day, all week and all year long with minimal
effect on the will of the opposition to keep on shooting the boys on the
ground.

We flew bombers over German cities and turned them into firestorms
fierce enough to turn stone to dust, as well as bounce the rubble of
houses and factories all night long, but the war still ground on. The
air power was helpful, but the boys on the ground still had to dodge
bullets and mop up that mess before it was over.

Japan was made to glow in the early morning light of two August days
before they were willing to consider calling it quits. Air power
devastated the Islands and cities thereon. We did not get a chance to
lose our boys on the ground in Japan, but a great many did perish in the
Pacific war.

Syria is using its air power, but most of the real fighting is on the
ground. Iran and Iraq flew and bombed, but again, the boys on the
ground did most of the work. George HW Bush took 100 days to liberate
Kuwait, and that took boots on the ground, after the flyboys had
expended their loads. Even the Soviets in Afghanistan were bedeviled by
ground fire while tooling about in gunships. We are not doing any
better there than the Ruskies, and over in Saddamistan, we declared
victory in a few short weeks due to air support, but took another eight
years on the ground before we gave up. To the guys on the street
corners with guns.

I don't think so.
The pro gun mob always wheel out this sort of thing because it is easy
to understand by the average gun owner, however the reality is that you
can't fight a modern army with the stuff you buy at walmart. Sure back
in the day when the most sophisticated military hardware was rifles and
cannons, you could fight an army but these days airpower is the key to
victory and I did not see any fighter jets or attack helicopters in the
gun shops. Perhaps Wilton has a B-52 stashed away in the back yard,
just in case or a few might have build a mini drone to spy on the
neighbours but I really can't see that doing much.
However I am happy enough for the gun crowd to have their little

No point in alarming people.

[MBZ] Before and After

2013-04-22 Thread Dan Penoff
Here are before and after pictures of the S500 hood from the finish recovery
project:

Before: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7lkmreuonj2tfd8/S500%20Hood%20Before.jpg

After: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2hrh8552j5c4qzs/S500%20Hood%20After.jpg

Do note that the after picture was done at night with some pretty harsh
light. There is dust in the air along with some bugs (this is Florida, after
all.) Some of the dots are paint imperfections, like rock chips. I haven't
gotten around to getting some touch up paint. In time

Now to go after the roof and the trunk lid. The hood will be covered and taped
off so it won't get any spatter or dust on it. Final results will probably be
this weekend.

This is not a zero sum game. If I have two guns, one is not to make up
for you not having made the choice to exercise the Right to Self Defense.

In the emotion ridden present day climate, there are many who want to make
this a fight about guns. It is not. The real core issue is who takes
responsibility for your personal self defense. The founding fathers of the
country understood this and made that responsibility reside with the
citizen by ensuring the Right to keep and bare arms Shall not be
infringed[in pertinent part here].

They did not say call 911 and wait or vomit on your attacker or try
peeing on them to scare them away, the language chosen was very specific
and legally powerful language [look up shall in Blacks law dictionary,
Not,and Infringe also].

Your expectation is that I will fully support your choice to not defend
yourself by being armed, which I do. My expectation is that you will fully
support my choice to defend myself and provide my own means to do so, which
I am not getting the feeling of full support.

When seconds count, the police are only minutes away has a lot more
meaning to me since the courts have repeatedly ruled that the police have
NO duty to protect citizens.

Just a few thoughts to stimulate your thinking process perhaps.

Respectfully,

Grant...

Re: [MBZ] Fw: Gun Ownership

2013-04-22 Thread Scott Ritchey

I think two points are worth making:

One: A firearm may be an important element in home protection but it's
seldom the most important part. Planning is the most important part. But
firearms become more important in rural areas, areas without nearby
neighbors, and in cases where physical limitations limit fleeing. Even so,
planning is most critical: safe room location and configuration (doors,
windows, cover, concealment, and clear lines of fire), drills/rehearsal,
training family members, etc.

Two: The political issue is usually stated as left-right,
liberal-conservative, etc. This is misleading. The real issue is
individualism vs. collectivism. Individualism is based on rights and
responsibilities; there are lots of objective criteria here. Collectivism,
unfortunately, can justify anything if it's for the common good.
