you or immediately in front of you, unless you're on the ramp or on a
runway; if you do, you're sure as Hell not gonna have any airspeed long.
Yet, several B-52's have flown straight and level into rising terrain or

My favorite European country is probably Portugal. In their grocery stores
most local wines are $3 or less. Lisbon is breathtakingly beautiful,
nestled in a SF-like setting but without the highly inflated sense of
self-importance. I love their cool streetcars and awesome museums, the
people are friendly, and pastry shops just like Paris IIRC. We took the
train to Albufiera on the Algarve and spent a week on the beach in November
a few years ago. Too cold to swim comfortably but that didn't stop me from
trying. The coastal ruins were fun to explore and mercifully devoid of
Eurotrash. Lots of Islamic influence in the architecture, with mosques from
past invasions well preserved for their stunning architecture.

Re: [MBZ] Totally OT - house painting

2013-07-25 Thread Randy Bennell

On 24/07/2013 10:30 PM, Dieselhead wrote:

How big is the house?
We had to have the north wall of our basement repaired several years
back. It developed a horizontal crack that we wished to stabilize.
We had it dug out on the outside down to the footings and the inside
reinforced with steel angle bolted to the concrete and then the
outside filled mostly with river rock etc.

30 foot wall cost about $6K for the repair.

I think I am getting too old and feeble to attack jobs like that by
myself.
The fellow who did it worked like a machine. He hand dug the whole
thing in no time and kept a second fellow almost running to dump the
wheelbarrows full of dirt on the street.

We have a crack in the east wall as well but it does not appear to be
any significant issue yet. I am thinking of having the steel
installed on it too but not digging it out as it does not leak.

Randy

Around 900 Sq ft, on the original part. not big.

I had all the basement fixers price it and they were between 10 and
20K too much money. I rents a trackhoe that was the perfect size.
Any smaller and the reach would not have been long enough. any larger
and I could not get it between the house and garage, and under the
patio roof. As it was, I had only a couple inches to spare. I think
even Dingo Diggers woulda; been proud. THere still was a lot of
shovel work. I had one helper for that, and he was a workin fool.

I like the ibeam brace systems better than the wall anchors, but opted
for a less expensive methodology. An old carpenter told me he
straightened walls by bulding a 2x4 frame wall inside, then after the
dirt is away from the wall outside, push the wall out. I was amazed at
how little force it took to straighten the walls. I think they wanted
4-500 bucks for each i beam or anchor. THis way I get water
controlinsode and out, and a finished basement at the end. putting in
the walls and insulating them made a HUGE difference last winter! Very
comfortable now.

___

Is your basement wall block?
My wife's grandfather straightened the wall in his basement many years
back by digging out the outside and using a square timber horizontally
and a big bolt to pull the middle back into alignment.

We are not permitted to use block here. It has to be poured concrete.
The problem is that the builders don't put enough cement in the concrete
and enough rebar in the wall.
Our gumbo tends to move around during wet vs dry times and over time we
get cracks in the foundation walls.
It is not much of an issue if it does not leak but over time they keep
moving until they do leak it seems.

Hence my having the wall braced so it would not move much.

fittings IIRC (or they may have a different name - the 2 cones mate and
form a seal I believe) -- should I put anything on the threads?
Anti-seize for instance? I know nylin is not acceptable

No, that's what Andrew was saying.

Grant, echoing Will Rogers, was saying he's thankful we don't get the
level of government for which we are actually paying. If we actually got
the level of government for which we are paying, there would be even more
intrusion and squashing of freedom. (Though it would be nice to pay for
only that level of government which we are actually getting.)

Yup! Did it again.
I was lusting after a 300TDt in Co. but it was too far away to fetch
economically and time was not available. Then two came up on Boston's
Craigslist, one too costly but nice, the other was OK for the money and nearby
on the cape. So Luke and I went for it and cruised home in style.
The car has some deficiencies, Alda missing, Junk brakes, small exhaust leak at
flex section (unobtainium), odd assortment of tyres, air cleaner adrift, etc.
etc. etc. On the other hand, the body and underbody are very good with just a
few warts and a pair of very small holes in the front inner fenders.
Onward and upward! (I keep telling myself Never again. Hah!)
Wanna 190Dt for cheap?

Really? Because I heard Andrew say he was willing to pay more to get more
government.

Either way I would say, and I think Grant may agree, that we are already
being robbed.

I
was lusting after a 300TDt in Co. but it was too far away to fetch
economically and time was not available. Then two came up on Boston's
Craigslist, one too costly but nice, the other was OK for the money and
nearby on the cape. So Luke and I went for it and cruised home in style.
The
car has some deficiencies, Alda missing, Junk brakes, small exhaust
leak at flex section (unobtainium), odd assortment of tyres, air cleaner
adrift, etc. etc. etc. On the other hand, the body and underbody are
very good with just a few warts and a pair of very small holes in the
front inner fenders.
Onward and upward! (I keep telling myself Never again. Hah!)
Wanna 190Dt for cheap?

[MBZ] More 124 ac

2013-07-25 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Ok so messing with my 95 e300 again. So I bought the complete set of test
wiring harness and break out box to test the entire acc system. Ran thru the
tests and it says pbu bad. During the test you are supposed to test for 12v
between I believe pin 7 and 13 on the break out box. I do not get 12v. On the
test to check for supply voltage it's just fine. So I am assuming if you jump
those 2 pins 13 and 7 that should be basically doing what the pbu would do and
kick on the compressor? Right? Well it does not. I am thinking if it should
kick on the compressor it's not the pbu but rather the wire going from the pbu
to the pressure switch. With the car running if you jump the other wire on the
switch that does to the Klima to any ground point compressor kicks on. I got
another pbu off eBay with the correct part number that was supposed to have
tested good and it does not kick on the compressor. So after messing with it,
studying wiring diagrams and trying to teach myself something about ele
ctrical the only thing I come up with is a problem with the wire. I am pretty
sure I tested resistance in that wire at the pbu plug and the pressure switch
and it had none, so that would seem to indicate the wire is good. I will check
this again then I guess see about tracing the wire. Problem is storm blew thru
the other day and blew a huge tree down taking out a storage building and fence
so I have to get this tree cut up.

Looks like a moment of clarity is in order.

Andrew, you have not been paying your fair share, apparently. I believe to
be fully content you should work without pay, for as long as your
government masters demand, and accept anything they provide for you as
satisfactory. Sound about right?

To the rest, I'm not pissed, just practical. I can not find a single

Ever. Show me even one government department that actually produces a
product for less than the sales price, that works on time, is delivered on
schedule, and you don't have to wait in line for.

was lusting after a 300TDt in Co. but it was too far away to fetch
economically and time was not available.

Re: [MBZ] Brake Hoses

2013-07-25 Thread Dieselhead

Howdy --
I am going to replace the rear calipers and hoses on my 91 300D this
weekend hopefully. Question - the connections where the hose meets
the caliper and where the hose meets the chassis pipe - they are
compression fittings IIRC (or they may have a different name - the 2
cones mate and form a seal I believe) -- should I put anything on
the threads? Anti-seize for instance? I know nylin is not
acceptable

Thanks -
Larry

they are double flare fittings.

BTB: no nothing on threads.

School of hard knocks: you can put some never seize on the external
threads as long as you are vewy vewy caweful (quoting Elmer Fudd)
not to get any antiseize onto the parts that will touch brake fluid.
BTDT.

Re: [MBZ] Totally OT - house painting

Is your basement wall block?
My wife's grandfather straightened the wall in his basement many
years back by digging out the outside and using a square timber
horizontally and a big bolt to pull the middle back into alignment.

We are not permitted to use block here. It has to be poured concrete.
The problem is that the builders don't put enough cement in the
concrete and enough rebar in the wall.
Our gumbo tends to move around during wet vs dry times and over time
we get cracks in the foundation walls.
It is not much of an issue if it does not leak but over time they
keep moving until they do leak it seems.

Hence my having the wall braced so it would not move much.

Randy

Yes. In this town there was a cement block plant, and everyone used
blocks for basement for decades. 30s and prior, there were some tile
block walls, and stone before that.

In 1979 i did poured reinforced concrete walls for an advanced earth
berm house. The owners buddy had poured walls done a month or so
earlier, next door, so my house was the second with poured walls in
the town/city and maybe the county.

I stopped in and talked to the current owner a few years ago, and it
was still dry and performing well. The enginerror had 2 grids of
steel 6 O.C. I questioned that and the guy agreed that 1 grid 12
o.c. was enough.Good to know the 2/3 less steel is sufficient.

BTW, by 5-10 years later everyone was doing poured walls, and the
block plant was out of business. My old neighbor's son has a welding
and machine shop on the site now.

RE: professional basement specialists None of the ones I
interviewed and got quotes from would straighten the walls. THey
stabilized it and when questioned, they admitted the wall would
still be bowed but would not get any worse. That and cost is why I
decided to DIY.

the $200T level - unfunded medical care. That is the first time I
