would. I tried to effectuate a repair using said parts. The car was
uncooperative. I need Dr. Fatty to send me the more parts I requested so that

When I bought my alternator, I needed it -that day-, so I went online,
found a cheapo at the local Advance, and used the (at the time) $40 coupon.
It has lasted for a couple years, though I haven't really driven that car

intelligent (she is an economics professor now, Hahvahd, MIT degrees), who
grew up in New York City, no car. She learned to drive at like 22 or so,
having had no need of a car up til then or any particular experience with
them other than the occasional taxi, and really hated driving but had to in
Houston to get anywhere (she did not want to ride the Ghetro).

One day we got talking about that subject for some reason, she was all
like OMG the Chinese are the worst drivers, me included! We determined,
based on her ability to do extremely sophisticated econometric analysis,
etc. that the reason for it was they don't grow up in a car/driving/riding
culture (realizing that most are first or second generation) and so do not
develop the awareness of subtle clues that are all around us and contribute
to our ability to drive to varying degrees of wellness. Also recognizing
many people have their heads up their posteriors, providing a similar
result, oriental, chinee, or whatever. Kinda like being dropped into any
culture or situation without that sort of conditioning, you will look like
a fool, or worse. Her parents were off the boat, never drove a car. She
was a city girl, never drove a car, so cars were like some magical thing to
 them, more or less.

So to some extent it is a cultural attribute that is on display for all to
observe. How one gauges that observation is subject to one's own
subjective observations. Clay is also likely somewhat racisss
but that does not really affect the quality of his subjective anecdotal
observations in regards to the driving aspect.

Also note that in China the chance of dying in a car crash is something
like 10% for all drivers. That is, uh, high.

Thanks Clay. I was pretty happy to dodge that one too.
That is the second time I have had a similar near miss with the car.
I think perhaps its low power is what saved me in the sense that the

So I was talking to my (then much younger and very PC) daughter and
committed the unpardonable sin of saying that I bought some groceries at
 the
Oriental Grocery...the actual name of the store. She demanded to know
then how I would like being called an occidental. I honestly (missing the
point entirely) told her I didn't give a crap.

But seriously...if you want to describe an oriental (someone from the
 east,
who is racially of a group consisting of Japanese, Korean, Chinese,
 Burmese
etc.) and you use the term asian doesn't that term also include people
from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc; who are racially and
culturally very different? When I read an account in the British news
 about
some asian men being arrested for terrorist activities I can never figure
out WTF they are talking about!

SO is the PC version intended to blur those differences so as to make a
statement that those differences are meaningless in the same way that the
term partner can mean married people, people in a homosexual
 relationship
or people working closely together in a business arrangement?

 Inquiring minds want to know!

[MBZ] Is Orientals a PC term ?

2013-09-10 Thread Richard Hattaway
The internet is full of concepts and opinions.  I couldn't stand it, so I went
to one of the largest purveyors of opinion to see what they say

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orient

So it certainly appears that it depends on what country you live in, and in our
country, depends on what state you live in.

My sister lives in California, and there it appears that some have significant
bias toward anyone of Asian descent, no matter the name.  AFAIK there is no
bias here in that direction by anybody other than Aryan skinheads, who are just
biased, period.

It may even depend on what county you live in.  In my county, since I am now
the official expert on the term, both terms will be considered politically
correct to describe anyone living on the left hand side of the time line to
somewhere right of Iraq.  Asian will be considered a more proper term.  However
no one will scorn Oriental, since it's in frequent use by the old timers here.

And absolutely nobody will discuss the actual path of the Orient Express.

Oriental is fine.  It means Korean or Japanese.

Neither is particularly descriptive in a useful way, like african American. I
know a guy from South Africa, he's white as me but looks a bit like a hobbit.
He proudly declares that he's african American and its true, he's a
naturalized citizen. People say african American when they mean black. I
don't understand why its okay to say white but not to say black. I find
people of color insulting to those of us with changeable skin tone. I'm
pretty dark right now, its been a good summer.

Anyway, last I heard it Orientals are carpets.

Re: [MBZ] How the dealer tried to screw me over

2013-09-10 Thread mlh
After they could tell I knew what I
was talking about and I have all the same diagnostic equipment
they had they dropped the issue. I hate dealers.

Reminds me of the time I helped a friend drop off a F250 6.9 at the dealer
to have the control pressures checked in the transmission.
They called up the next day and said the truck wouldn't start, so they
needed $300 or something for new batteries before they'd do any other
work.
I drove out there, popped the hood to make sure his both his 3 month old
Exides were still in it, and saw a loose wire next to the IP.

So I plugged in the ignition signal wire at the fuel shutoff solenoid on
the IP, hopped in the truck and it started right up, didn't even crank
slowly. I drove it to the shop door and told them to quit messing around
and do the job that was on the work order. I didn't mention to them that I
knew they sabotaged it to keep it from starting. Obviously the shutoff
wire was connected when I drove the truck in the day before.

If I had any brains I would have driven the truck back to my friend's
house and told him to take me back to pick up my car.

Mitch.

Close, but no cigar. Denigrate, like most ten-cent words in English,
comes from Latin via Old French. The root is indeed denigrare, meaning
to darken, but the connotation is a figurative one, a close cousin to the
expression blacken one's reputation--i.e., to denigrate someone or
something is to imply that it's shady, unwholesome, evil, as in
blackball, blackguard, or the Prince of Darkness. Nothing to do with
race.

It means Korean or Japanese.

...perhaps a legacy of racial bias, slavery etc.

It is a common misconception that the US is unique or even preeminent in
having a history of slavery. Most of the African slave trade went east, not
west. Even the western slave trade went more to countries south of the US.
Slavery exists today in many parts of the world.

Some of my close relatives are named Loschiavo, which translates from the
Italian as the slave. The village in Italy where my dad (and the
Loschiavos) were born was moved up the mountains away from the sea three
times in its history. Some say this was to escape the depredations of the
Corsairs.

The ethnic group in the US that were victims of the largest number of
lynchings (as a percent of their population numbers) were not African
blacks, but Italians. The largest mass lynching that took place in the US
was of Italians, not African blacks.

Indeed Mississippi and Louisiana were to become a worldwide symbol of Anti
Italianism when, in 1891, eleven Italian immigrants in New Orleans were
lynched due to their alleged role in the murder of the police chief David
Hennessy.[4]

This was one of the largest mass lynchings in U.S. history.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Italians_in_Mississippi

Most people are skeptical of this, where are the Italian Sharptons and
Jacksons screaming for compensation?

So I was talking to my (then much younger and very PC) daughter and
committed the unpardonable sin of saying that I bought some groceries at the
Oriental Grocery...the actual name of the store. She demanded to know
then how I would like being called an occidental. I honestly (missing the
point entirely) told her I didn't give a crap.

But seriously...if you want to describe an oriental (someone from the east,
who is racially of a group consisting of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Burmese
etc.) and you use the term asian doesn't that term also include people
from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc; who are racially and
culturally very different? When I read an account in the British news about
some asian men being arrested for terrorist activities I can never figure
out WTF they are talking about!

SO is the PC version intended to blur those differences so as to make a
statement that those differences are meaningless in the same way that the
term partner can mean married people, people in a homosexual relationship
or people working closely together in a business arrangement?

Inquiring minds want to know!

But he is correct. A good friend of mine married a Chinese girl, very
intelligent (she is an economics professor now, Hahvahd, MIT degrees), who
grew up in New York City, no car.

So to some extent it is a cultural attribute that is on display for all
to observe.

So I had to trailer my GL to the MB dealer yesterday. The reason being LF
airmatic shock blew out all the sudden. This was done at the dealer on
9/14 last year, so it falls under the 1 years parts and labor warranty. I
have also noticed the LR sometimes seems to sink when it is sitting at
random, sometimes it does, sometimes it does not. Anyway, I figured
dealer would try to get some money out of me somehow. So I just got the
call, they are replacing the LF shock under warrant but said the LR is
leaking all and would be $680 something or other to replace. They also
said they hooked it up to the SDS system and found the compressor was
running but was weak. I told them I would replace the rear air bag when I
got it home and that the compressor is BRAND NEW and only has about 2k
miles on it, and I ALSO have a SDS system and just tested the system 2
days ago and the compressor met specs very quickly, as a brand new
compressor would. After they could tell I knew what I was talking about
and I have all the same diagnostic equipment they had they dropped the
issue. I hate dealers.

The latins are less afraid of their shadows and more honest with identifying
characteristics. IT does speed things along when you can say it was a chinese

[MBZ] (CORRECTION) My Wretched 240D

2013-09-10 Thread Gerry Archer

Sorry to hear you're having so much trouble, Bob.

I'm still playing with the alternator? regulator? battery? problem in my
'83 300D because I want to figure out why I, and many other people, are
having fairly frequent problems.

I've set up a bench test with a new shop battery (that's normally a backup
for the burglar/fire alarm system) so I can test alternators and
regulators. I still need to find out the size and type of charging light
bulb, the 18 ohm resistor, and the diode in series with it; all of which
are in the instrument cluster; in order to duplicate the charging system
on the car. This part of the charging system is not intuitive, (See
schematic from the shop manual sent separately), at least to me.

One test that seems to be missing from the current FLAPS DIY protocol is
specific gravity, and hence the state of charge, of the battery. It's
messy and it's easy to get burned with battery acid, so FLAPS; Autozone
and Advance at least; don't test specific gravity and will argue with you
if you tell them the sp.gr. is off in one or more battery cells even
though their handheld testers show that the battery is good.

Instructions that come with new Bosch alternators say that battery must be
fully charged before installation or the diodes can be damaged. Under the
current methodology no one knows the state of their batteries charge
because they don't test it's sp.gr. Could this be the reason some on the
list have frequent regulator and/or alternator failures; they are throwing
a heavy charging load on the new parts as soon as they're installed?

Gary said that Bosch products are not what they used to be, so treating
them gently may be especially necessary.

From now on my first test will be specific gravity done with a real glass
hydrometer (not the cheap plastic kind). If the readings in all the cells
are close; no matter what the sp.gr./state of charge, the battery is
probably okay. That's the way we did it with the old type batteries.

The next step will be to charge the battery with my 10 amp. battery
charger set on MANUAL; (automatic settings are useless on my charger); the
cell covers off, and a disposable rag lying over the open cells in case
the bubbling electrolyte splatters small amounts onto the top of the
battery.

After charging for an hour, I'll let the battery cool down and then
re-check the cells sp.gr.
in order to get an idea of how fast the battery is charging. I don't want
to overcharge and damage the battery.

If the sp.gr. reading are approximately the same in all cells after the
battery is fully charged, I'll assume the battery is good and then install
the new alternator and/or regulator; or test the charging voltage on
those that are already installed.

If a cell is down in the red range on the hydrometer and the other cells
are in the green, I'll go back to the battery seller and demand a new
battery after showing him/her the sp.gr. readings on the current battery.

If the battery is good and the charging voltage is low, I'll replace the
regulator and check the charging voltage again. If the charging voltage
is still low, I'll replace the ALTERNATOR (CORRECTION).

Good luck with solving your problems, Bob.

Bricks in a hole? I'm thinking Amontillado, not pendulum.

Maybe. How would you adapt it to modern life, centered on an amateur
mechanic too cheap to buy a lift?.

And that with no wine! The mover of the Cask of Amontillado was a man who
wanted to murder a drunk and tempted him with a tale of rare wine hidden
in a cellar. Once the drunk was in place, he proceeded to erect a wall of
brick closing him in. The plot twist was that the drunk really did find
Amontillado and was talking with the murderer as the wall was going up,
saying that he had found and was drinking the wine. At the end, years
later, the murderer sees that the wall is still up and wonders about the
wine.

Now, indeed, how would you adapt it to modern life, centered on an amateur
mechanic too cheap to buy a lift?. Well, for starters and centering on
cheap, one would replace the wine with beer. The rest of the story would
involve covering over the pit, but how to keep Bubba alive and talking
until the work is finished would have to be resolved.

A parent of one of my son's friends is from Dutch Guiana. She refers to people
by the color of their skin.

When I asked her about this, she said it was a common way in her previous
culture to identify people, as in a black man or a yellow woman. She
emphasized that it was never done in a disparaging manner, it was just a way to
identify a characteristic.

She found it strange that our culture could potentially find it inappropriate.

I told her it was more a matter of societal norms and nothing else...

Re: [MBZ] My Wretched 240D

2013-09-10 Thread Gerry Archer

Sorry to hear you're having so much trouble, Bob.

I'm still playing with the alternator? regulator? battery? problem in my '83
300D because I want to figure out why I, and many other people, are having
fairly frequent problems.

I've set up a bench test with a new shop battery (that's normally a backup
for the burglar/fire alarm system) so I can test alternators and regulators.
I still need to find out the size and type of charging light bulb, the 18
ohm resistor, and the diode in series with it; all of which are in the
instrument cluster; in order to duplicate the charging system on the car.
This part of the charging system is not intuitive, (See schematic from the
shop manual sent separately), at least to me.

One test that seems to be missing from the current FLAPS DIY protocol is
specific gravity, and hence the state of charge, of the battery. It's messy
and it's easy to get burned with battery acid, so FLAPS; Autozone and
Advance at least; don't test specific gravity and will argue with you if you
tell them the sp.gr. is off in one or more battery cells even though their
handheld testers show that the battery is good.

Instructions that come with new Bosch alternators say that battery must be
fully charged before installation or the diodes can be damaged. Under the
current methodology no one knows the state of their batteries charge because
they don't test it's sp.gr. Could this be the reason some on the list have
frequent regulator and/or alternator failures; they are throwing a heavy
charging load on the new parts as soon as they're installed?

Gary said that Bosch products are not what they used to be, so treating them
gently may be especially necessary.

From now on my first test will be specific gravity done with a real glass
hydrometer (not the cheap plastic kind). If the readings in all the cells
are close; no matter what the sp.gr./state of charge, the battery is
probably okay. That's the way we did it with the old type batteries.

The next step will be to charge the battery with my 10 amp. battery charger
set on MANUAL; (automatic settings are useless on my charger); the cell
covers off, and a disposable rag lying over the open cells in case the
bubbling electrolyte splatters small amounts onto the top of the battery.

After charging for an hour, I'll let the battery cool down and then re-check
the cells sp.gr.
in order to get an idea of how fast the battery is charging. I don't want
to overcharge and damage the battery.

If the sp.gr. reading are approximately the same in all cells after the
battery is fully charged, I'll assume the battery is good and then install
the new alternator and/or regulator; or test the charging voltage on those
that are already installed.

If the charging voltage is
still low, I'll replace the regulator.

Good luck with solving your problems, Bob.

Tim,
Cannot imagine how frustrated you must be!!

Did you test the Glow Plug Relay? the test procedures are in the WSM --
I can look it up and send it to you if you'd like -- with all the
electrical draw you have it sure sounds like the GPR. I suggest you
also use a analog Volt Meter to check for a short - disconnect the neg
cable from battery - connect + of VM to the neg post and the - clip to
the chassis so it gets a good ground -- if there's even a small short
the needle will swing. Don't know why a Analog VM was said to work and
to not use a DMM - but I did as suggested and it worked. You can
disconnect things and watch the needle - when it drops to zero you have
found the short. I am sure there are other methods but this one was
easy for me to do and worked s described. YMMV.

Let me know if you need the testing procedures for the GPR - it's pretty
basic - I used a 12v test light.

Good Luck

I might have used oriental or ??? but I was trying to be somewhat

The fellow may have been Korean, Phillipino, etc.
Hard to tell since I am A) not an expert on that sort of thing, and B)
did not really get close enough to determine much more

I blew my horn and waved my fist at him when I pulled up behind him at

level all the way around. Fred and I had a discussion of spray on
undercoat. He's saying 3M Schutz or Duplicolor UC103. The former is fairly
expensive (around $16/can) in that its twice the latter. I've used some
NAPA stuff before that was fair to middling but doesn't seem to stay on
 that great.

Anybody else got a favorite? Its got to be something preloaded in cans, I'm
not going to get into a sprayer and all that just for this project.

[MBZ] Spray on undercoat

2013-09-10 Thread Curt Raymond
Anybody want to talk about cars? ;)

So I did a bunch of welding on the Jetta, its cleaning up nicely but will need
a helluva lot more. I may finally finish off the old computer I've been
scavenging metal out of and move on to my recently replaced microwave. It'll be
a hard move, computer metal is nice to work with. Interestingly where a 190D
would rot right in the curve of the rocker the Jetta rots out the flat
underneath, it sure is fun lying on your back welding over your head...

Anyway I welded in metal and painted on POR15 which is probably good enough for
the underside of the car but its got black trim on the front and rear down
level with the rocker so I figure I'll paint the rockers black at that level
all the way around. Fred and I had a discussion of spray on undercoat. He's

She found it strange that our culture could potentially find it

I told her it was more a matter of societal norms and nothing else...

My experience:

79 300TD - Bad diode. Replaced rectifier assembly twice (local purchase)
and both failed in short order. Replaced alternator with Bosch reman (Circa
2000) with no subsequent failures when sold in 2007.

82 300TD - Wouldn't start in 2005. Replaced regulator (short brushes) and
no subsequent problem.

I never had a battery cause other problems but I check specific gravity and
voltage and will charge with external 3-phase charger as part of
troubleshooting.

I'll presume the light isn't on and say you need an alternator. If the light
was on maybe a regulator would get it. I've NEVER gotten away with just a
regulator (4 out of 5 of my MBs have needed alternators) and if I haven't
replaced the battery I usually need multiple alternators until I get smart
enough to replace the battery.

This thing wouldn't start today in the rain after I had been in the
dentist chair for 90 minutes. AAA jumped me, drove straight to O'Reilly's
to get a quick and dirty alternator check. Voltage check with engine
running, 11.0 volts. Sowhich is more that likely the culprit...
alternator or voltage regulator (which I replaced 6 months ago)?.

[MBZ] How the dealer tried to screw me over

2013-09-10 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
So I had to trailer my GL to the MB dealer yesterday. The reason
being LF airmatic shock blew out all the sudden. This was done at
the dealer on 9/14 last year, so it falls under the 1 years parts
and labor warranty. I have also noticed the LR sometimes seems to
sink when it is sitting at random, sometimes it does, sometimes it
does not. Anyway, I figured dealer would try to get some money
out of me somehow. So I just got the call, they are replacing the
LF shock under warrant but said the LR is leaking all and would be
$680 something or other to replace. They also said they hooked it
up to the SDS system and found the compressor was running but was
weak. I told them I would replace the rear air bag when I got it
home and that the compressor is BRAND NEW and only has about 2k
miles on it, and I ALSO have a SDS system and just tested the
system 2 days ago and the compressor met specs very quickly, as a
brand new compressor would. After they could tell I knew what I
was talking about and I have all the same diagnostic equipment
they had they dropped the issue. I hate dealers.

Re: [MBZ] Bad Drivers

2013-09-10 Thread Rich Thomas
I worked with a guy named Billy Goon who was Chinese. One day we were
talking and he says he plays poker with a bunch of other chinamen. At
that time, that term was derogatory from what I understood, so I say
whoa you can't be saying that. He asks what I mean, I say you can't say
chinamen as that is derogatory. He looks at me like I have 3 heads
and asks why. So I explain best I could that some people decided that
was bad. He is completely perplexed, and says, well I am from China, I
am a man, so I am a chinaman just like you would be an americaman in China.

On an amusing side note in that regard, my buddy used to work for the
computer company Wang way back when. He was in a meeting with Mr. Wang
and a bunch of other people, being presented to by some advertising firm
who was pitching their services. They unveil a big rendering of a
full-page newspaper ad that says in big letters WANG The Chink in IBM's
Armor along with whatever graphics and copy. He says the whole room
goes quiet, the guy is standing there like what did I just do, then it
dawns on him... Mr. Wang says very quietly, Thank you, I think we have
heard enough and gets up and walks out. True story.

The eminent authority on language and social interactions Ms. Rachel
Jeantel explained it quite well. Chinos!
