It's not nearly so nice out today, I waited a bit later, but no sun.
I went into the garage and searched more carefully for parts, and was
able to find the all-metal 115 grille I'd laid in for potential use on
the 250C. I'm not sure I want to use it here, though. I also found
the 116 grille I'd bought for cutting off some repair plastic. That
turns out to bridge nicely across the radiator, pinned in place by the
grille surround mounting ears. I might go that way for now, it looks
somewhat better than a gaping dark hole. I did not find any spare
headlights, and I was reluctant to steal one off of the 250C. I dug
some more, and found the spare glass lenses I'd bought for these
headlights. They were flat-front, not the curved-fronts that were on
the car, but they were Hella. I tried one, and it fits! I used a
hammer to try to remove the bend from the trim ring, and I think it
worked. There's a crack, as this is pot metal, but it doesn't look
too bad. It looks a little funny compared to the other one, I may end
up putting on both flat lenses and retiring the (broken, and
glued-together) curved lens. I had to replace the 4W city (parking)
light bulb, but the others were all still intact. I put the headlight
back on the car, that helps the looks a lot. The auxiliary fog lights
are not working, and there are no auxiliary driving lights, but the
car looks driveable. I had a little coolant to pour in, but not
enough to restore the car to the road. Jill is supposed to be
fetching me some.

Re: [MBZ] 300SD, Ferrari. and Suburban brake question

2014-02-09 Thread Dieselhead
Gorgeous day today, 60F+ so I got the boy's 300SD sorted and washed
and plated and it is back on the road for mama as the girl took her
300SD. Runs well, a few niggles to deal with.

I was doing some test ride to make sure it was running OK and went
up the road to a small shopping center and a Ferrari transporter was
pulling into the lot, from central Florida Ferrari. I drove around
a bit and came back and they had unloaded a maroon Ferrari, I don't
know what model, I guess the newest one. It was gorgeous. The
transporter had another inside with the front end smashed and 4
others back in there too. The Ferrari dude looked quite happy, had
some of his posse with him. He looked vaguely like Ralph Lipshitz
(Lauren) but it wasn' t Ralphie.

I replaced the rear rotors and pads on the Suburban, one set of pads
had plum woe out and metal on metal was Not Good. That side was
extremely difficult to get the pads and caliper back on --too tight
--, and during my drive to bed them in a bit it is very clearly
dragging and stinking like crazy and hot. I could spin the wheel
but it was hard, so I am thinking it just needs to wear down the
pads a bit? I had fully compressed the pistons so not sure what the
problem was. The other one went on fine with a bit of clearance,
both rotors appear to be the same but I am thinking I should measure
them and make sure the one is the proper thickness. Any ideas?

I've had 4 SDLs, and you would never know they are the same engine.
The first ran great and had been well maintained by a radio

was not as high performance, and had been owned for years by an
elderly couple. When I got it the tube from the intake manifold to

After I blew that out, and we ran it on a few 400-500 mile trips, it

[MBZ] Power Steering Fluid

2014-02-09 Thread Larry T

Hi All,
I have a liter of Hydraulic Fluid I bought either from Rusty or the
MB dealer several years ago. It's FEBI (Bilstein) # 08972 and it says
it is to be used for Specs;

MB 236.3,
Dexron II,
Voith 55-6335, (Standard Drain) &
ZF TE - ML 09, 11, 14A, 03D, 04D & 17k.

Does anyone know if this is the appropriate fluid to use in the
Power Steering Reservoir of my 1991 300D 2.5T W124? My present fluid
looks pretty dark and I'd like to replace the filter and fluid.

Thanks!

Re: [MBZ] Bluetooth OBD-II scanners

In my search for OBDII dongles, I found that the WiFi ones were less
troublesome as far as connectivity. At least that seemed to be a common issue
for the BT ones I looked at.

I bought am ELM 327 model and it has worked flawlessly in my R129 with my iPad.

Re: [MBZ] 190D to 240D finnie to 250E Pontoon

2014-02-09 Thread Hendrik and Fay
Yes I did read that (even though it is written in that horrible white on
black background rubbish, why do people still do that and why is it not
banned?).
This is why construction cost including labour was 185k, my assumption
was that they are talking Euros and not pounds or dollars. Lets say he
charges 50 euro an hour, that's 125k. That leaves 60k for parts, two
damaged 201 and a pontoon, plus bits and pieces.
My round about question was if he would get his money back on this, or
was it a labour of love.
The answer is no, I don't think anyone would cough up 185k for a go fast
pontoon, my guess is 20-30k euro but there are signs of the 'classic'
market in Europe being on the up, so there may be a keen buyer out there.

Market value for a 'modernised' pontoon?

As a well executed one-off? Whatever a buyer will pay.

Re: [MBZ] RIP, Frankenheap?

2014-02-09 Thread Jim Cathey

Some of them even have acterna silkscreened onto the internal PCB's...

Go figure.

I understand that the ones that are rs485 out and have an adapter cable to
rs232 are supposedly more stable.

It certainly doesn't take many uses of it to break even with respect to having
a dealer pull codes/perform resets...

Runs well, a few niggles to deal with.

I was doing some test ride to make sure it was running OK and went up
the road to a small shopping center and a Ferrari transporter was
pulling into the lot, from central Florida Ferrari. I drove around a
bit and came back and they had unloaded a maroon Ferrari, I don't know
what model, I guess the newest one. It was gorgeous. The transporter
had another inside with the front end smashed and 4 others back in there
too. The Ferrari dude looked quite happy, had some of his posse with
him. He looked vaguely like Ralph Lipshitz (Lauren) but it wasn' t Ralphie.

I replaced the rear rotors and pads on the Suburban, one set of pads had
plum woe out and metal on metal was Not Good. That side was extremely
difficult to get the pads and caliper back on --too tight --, and during
my drive to bed them in a bit it is very clearly dragging and stinking
like crazy and hot. I could spin the wheel but it was hard, so I am
thinking it just needs to wear down the pads a bit? I had fully
compressed the pistons so not sure what the problem was. The other one
went on fine with a bit of clearance, both rotors appear to be the same

[MBZ] TE gas hose (again)

2014-02-09 Thread Peter Frederick
My brother reported that the gas hose between the fuel pumps on my TE
--niece is driving it since her 300E lost a headlight and fender to an
idiot driver -- has split. I replaced it a few years back, at least
three, because it had become porous and was dripping fuel. Either it
was a defective hose or the aftermarket ones aren't any good.

I found a genuine MB replacement for $115, but they wanted three days
shipping and we wanted to get the car going again, so I bought an
aftermarket one. Soft hose, I'd have thought any fuel line on the
pressure side for those cars would be fairly hard, they hold 75 psi
after all.

Anyway, FedEx was a day late due to the snow and it was 4F with the
car stuck in the open carport at my brother's workplace, so it finally
got replaced today. Put a fuel filter in there at the same time, the
old one had at least 40,000 miles on it. I should have bought the
real one at that rate -- I suspect I'll be needing one soon if this
hose isn't any better than the one I put on last time. Ended up with
a huge split, probably three inches long just above the banjo fitting.

Waiting on a report on drivability, it's been somewhat cranky the last
couple years. My brother put new plugs in it, the Bosch Platinums I
put in when I got it were fried, probably due to lean running -- I've
had trouble getting the mixture right on it, it was messed with before
I got it and I had a number of vacuum leaks.

At any rate, it's starting better and running again -- good thing
because I'll need it later in the month to run over to St. Louis. I
don't trust the 300D on the highway until I get a new exhaust,
turbocharger, and front seal in it. Blows way too much oil at the
current time to drive it on the interstate, and I'm not willing to put
up with the noise from a blown exhaust, including the burned out
coupler between the sections of the exhaust manifold.

Hopefully the dismal gas milage will improve without a fuel leak.

It's always something.

Many years ago when food/vitamins were first being widely discussed,
National Geographic sent a team to several area of the world where many
people lived to be over 100; postulating that longevity was a marker of
good diet/lifestyle. They were looking for common denominators applicable
to all the areas they visited; especially in their diets.

There were few similarities among the diets regarding protein, fats, and
carbohydrates. They were all over the place. One subject drank about a
quart of home made wine every day. Another sat in front of his house and
ate caramels all day. Another was still smoking cigarettes at 100+ years.

What they found was little comfort to the burgeoning healthfood industry.
The common denominators they did find were:
A calorie intake of about 1700 calories per day; far less than most
American diets.
An assumption of being a useful member of their communities, no matter
what their age.
A feeling of being "young" until they lost interest in sex, and an active
sex life before then.
A physically active life style.  One was still picking tea at 100+;
another was still making mud bricks, stomping the clay with his feet, every
day. Examinations found evidence of all sorts of previous diseases the
oldsters never knew they had. For example, their circulatory systems were
in such good condition due to their physically active lifestyle (they
walked everywhere, never drove) that they had had heart attacks which they
thought were influenza or other passing diseases.
And what was most discouraging was that the centenaries all came from
families which lived very long lives.

Of course, that study has been forgotten and the hucksters are back
pushing their nostrums, and the food companies are pushing their processed
foods which are almost always loaded with salt and/or sugar.

I've looked for that article in Nat'l Geog online files with no success.
If anyone can find it, I would love to have a copy since I've forgotten
much of the detail.

Thanks,
Gerry

[MBZ] Mercedes C3 Star Diagnostic System

2014-02-09 Thread Dan Penoff
Ordered one of these with the software on an external hard drive from a company
in mainland China off Alibaba today. They were highly rated and traffic on eBay
as well with good feedback.

Two days to build and 2-3 in transit via DHL. Should be here by the end of the
week.

$290 shipped. Not a bad deal, I thought. A number of people on BenzWorld have
this and they swear by it, especially for the 96 and later cars, as the OBDII
system won't do anything with a lot of the proprietary MB systems.

Case in point: because the PO was using the convertible top manually, the
system was pissed and logged all sorts of errors. While it's happy now from a
functional standpoint, the only way to clear the codes it's throwing is to use
the Star system, as the RST isn't part of OBDII.

I'm really looking forward to hooking this up to both of my cars and being able
to poke around.

 That's a "lot" of beef.

That is great and hilarious! I love it! One of the best things
about staying in the Baden-Powell House in London was the English
breakfast of Bacon and eggs and bangers and toast and I can't
remember what all else! It was great!

When I was 15, and a dark hole for food, i spent 2 weeks on the
continent, from belch, luxembourg to confederation helvetica to
italia, monaco and back through france. I had a hard time adjusting
to coffee (or hot tea) and cold hard rolls for breakfast.

Default *Roger's Ode to Breakfast*

BACON AND EGGS

NOW blest be the Briton, his beef and his beer,
And all the strong waters that keep him in cheer,
But blest beyond cattle and blest beyond kegs
Is the brave British breakfast of bacon and eggs-

Bacon and eggs,
Bacon and eggs;
Sing bacon,
Red bacon,
Red bacon and eggs!

Thus armed and thus engined, well-shaven and gay,
We leap to our labours and conquer the day,
While paltry pale foreigners, meagre as moles,
Must crawl through the morning on coffee and rolls-

Coffee and rolls,
Barbarous rolls;
Sing coffee,
Black coffee,
Vile coffee and rolls!

What wonder the Frenchman, blown out with new
bread, gesticulates oft and is light in the head !
Our perfect control of our arms and our legs
We owe to our ballast of bacon and eggs-

Bacon and eggs.
Unemotional eggs;
Sing bacon,
Fat bacon,
Brave bacon and eggs!

What wonder that Fortune is careful to place
Her loveliest laurels on men of our race,
While sorrow is heaped upon Prussians and Poles
Who shame the glad morning with coffee and rolls-

Coffee and rolls,
Ladylike rolls;
Sing coffee,
Pooh! coffee,
Black coffee and rolls!

What wonder the Russian looks redly because
Our England, old England, is much what it.was!
We fight to the finish, we drink to the dregs
And dare to be Daniels on bacon and eggs-

Bacon and eggs,
Masculine eggs;
'Sing bacon,
Bring bacon,
And fry me two eggs!

But gross Europeans who constantly munch
Too little at breakfast, too freely at lunch
Sit sated in cafes, incapable souls,
And go to the devil on coffee and rolls-

Coffee and rolls,
Windy wet rolls;
At coffee
I'm scoffy,
I execrate rolls!

O breakfast! O breakfast! The meal of my heart!
Bring porridge, bring sausage, bring fish for a start,
Bring kidneys and mushrooms and partridges' legs,
But let the foundation be bacon and eggs-

Bacon and eggs,
Bacon and eggs;
Bring Crisp bacon,
And let there be eggs!

Re: [MBZ] US company recalls 4,000 tons of contaminated beef

2014-02-09 Thread G Mann
One of my favorite quotes of Will Rogers: "Thank God we don't get all the
government we pay for"

Seems to sort of sum up this kind of thing. In the last 66 yrs I've never
yet seen a government agency or program that preformed to simple business
standards.

Here in Arizona, for example, the Governor just fired and closed the entire
Child Protective Agency and replaced it with an interim cabinet post until
the legislature can form a new version. The Child Protective folks had
refused to investigate over 6000 cases of child abuse in past year.. seems
they just couldn't get organized while spending more than any other agency
for the number of staff.

Seems we place our trust and treasure with people and agencies and they let
us down... we die, they retire.. case closed..

Rant off:

All efforts to break or wear out my Mercedes have so far failed.. Clean
fuel, Clean air, Clean oil... they just keep on ticking along. [well..
klacka klacka along at least]

Re: [MBZ] RIP, Frankenheap?

2014-02-09 Thread Dieselhead

The grille _surround_ is a problem, it's mangled.
Maybe I could hammer it into shape again, but right
now I'm focused on drivability, not beauty. The
headlight is a problem, I don't really want to
steal one off the 250C. I thought I had laid in
a spare light or two from the junkyard, but my
first cruise through the piles netted zip.

I made a grill out of a drop-in light panel from a hanging
ceiling... Sprayed it to match the car color...

Clever, but too much work for the situation. I have
a 116 grille panel in the scrap pile, I cut pieces
off of it to glue onto some other grille that had
a bit of damage. That'd probably be a decent base
to build on.

Re: [MBZ] OT - bloody old computer

2014-02-09 Thread Jim Cathey

I wonder if this [Colossus] was a programmable computer and
if it could interface on the web today?

Yes it was programmable, but only via plugboard. It
was not a stored-program computer but rather resembled
analog computers.

With only at most 10,000 logic elements (100 gates claimed),
no memory to speak of, and a high-speed input processing
capability of about 750 bits/second, you would find it
difficult to access in _any_ way today.

With some work you could perhaps make it into a peripheral
to a more standard computer, but I'm not sure what the point
would be, unless you needed an 8kW web-equipped space heater
with less calculating power than is found in the newer
computer's _keyboard_!

Re: [MBZ] Vitamin B-12

2014-02-09 Thread Curt Raymond
I had dinner at an organic pizza place last night, build your own pizza from
good ingredients, nice place.
They've got one of those "million flavors" of coke machines. I made an Arnold
Palmer from the "zero percent juice" lemonade and real actual iced tea. I
should have skipped the lemonade, it tasted fake and of chemicals.

So I sat around and watched the zombies guzzling HFCS and chemicals and
pondered the nature of people who would seek out organic pizza (people were
checking on that "its organic right?") and then guzzle chemicals. It baffles me.

That is totally true.
Today I had a glass of Chocoriffic drink.  It has HFCS and not much
fat and very little dairy product (close-dated markdown food is why I
purchased it).  It was fundamentally unsatisfying.  Our body wants
food, not junk, so our body will not sate until food not junk is
consumed.  Eat fat, eat cholesterol, eat food, not chemicals and many
problems do not happen.  Satisfy a body's essential needs is critical
and until we get that correct, we have problems.
Great point, Andrew.

[MBZ] Ode to Breakfast

2014-02-09 Thread arche...@embarqmail.com

Default *Roger's Ode to Breakfast*

BACON AND EGGS

NOW blest be the Briton, his beef and his beer,
And all the strong waters that keep him in cheer,
But blest beyond cattle and blest beyond kegs
Is the brave British breakfast of bacon and eggs—

Bacon and eggs,
Bacon and eggs;
Sing bacon,
Red bacon,
Red bacon and eggs!

Thus armed and thus engined, well-shaven and gay,
We leap to our labours and conquer the day,
While paltry pale foreigners, meagre as moles,
Must crawl through the morning on coffee and rolls—

Coffee and rolls,
Barbarous rolls;
Sing coffee,
Black coffee,
Vile coffee and rolls!

What wonder the Frenchman, blown out with new
bread, gesticulates oft and is light in the head !
Our perfect control of our arms and our legs
We owe to our ballast of bacon and eggs—

Bacon and eggs.
Unemotional eggs;
Sing bacon,
Fat bacon,
Brave bacon and eggs!

What wonder that Fortune is careful to place
Her loveliest laurels on men of our race,
While sorrow is heaped upon Prussians and Poles
Who shame the glad morning with coffee and rolls-

Coffee and rolls,
Ladylike rolls;
Sing coffee,
Pooh! coffee,
Black coffee and rolls!

What wonder the Russian looks redly because
Our England, old England, is much what it.was!
We fight to the finish, we drink to the dregs
And dare to be Daniels on bacon and eggs—

Bacon and eggs,
Masculine eggs;
'Sing bacon,
Bring bacon,
And fry me two eggs!

But gross Europeans who constantly munch
Too little at breakfast, too freely at lunch
Sit sated in cafes, incapable souls,
And go to the devil on coffee and rolls—

Coffee and rolls,
Windy wet rolls;
At coffee
I'm scoffy,
I execrate rolls!

O breakfast! O breakfast! The meal of my heart!
Bring porridge, bring sausage, bring fish for a start,
Bring kidneys and mushrooms and partridges' legs,
But let the foundation be bacon and eggs—

Bacon and eggs,
Bacon and eggs;
Bring Crisp bacon,
And let there be eggs!

[MBZ] US company recalls 4,000 tons of contaminated beef

2014-02-09 Thread rogerhga
My concern when I read stories like this is "where were the USDA inspectors
BEFORE the product was shipped"? I know they can't be everywhere, but it seems
they are always good at after the fact finger pointing, and yes, probably a big
fine for their coffers. With all the IRS picking on C4 conservative groups,
kinda makes you wonder if this company donated big to the RNC. But then, they
are in CA, so probably not allowed. Before anyone gets their shorts in a bunch,
I'm just posing the possible humorous, conspiracy side of this story :-)
Best Wishes,
