Re: [MBZ] 124 AC woe
Thanks all! I think Peter has given me a good place to start trouble shooting. Reading the HVAC manual about the evaporator temperature sensor, there is this note: On vehicles as of 09/87, the refrigerant compressor is switched off by the control unit after 2 minutes of operation if there is a short circuit in the temperature sensor evaporator (resistance value below 2.5 kOhm). This prevents continuous refrigerant compressor operation and subsequent icing-up of the evaporator. The refrigerant compressor is only switched on again after the engine has been switched off and on again. So I shall attempt to test the evap temp sensor and the expansion valve. No dry ice here. I do have a can of air, can turn that upside down and get some pretty cold spray. Hmmm... -Max On Sat, Jul 12, 2014 at 10:29 PM, Peter Frederick psf...@earthlink.net wrote: W124 has a thermistor just in behind the evaporator that senses the temp. Will cycle the compressor to prevent freeze-up. However, if the expansion valve is bad, it will seriously overcool, and then the computer will not turn the compressor back on until the evaporator thaws out, which takes a while with no airflow. The temperature of the return line to the compressor should be 35 to 38F, whatever pressure that is on an R134a system. You can test the expansion valve with some very cold ice (dry ice works best, but it's hard to find and dangerous. Use a cube straight from the freezer). With the system up and going, put the ice on the bellows of the expansion valve (the do-dad on top). This should close the expansion valve and drop the pressure in the return line to near vaccum (which is why dry ice works better, it's way to cold -- ice won't go below 32F and you need it colder). If it doesn't drop, the expansion valve is stuck open and it will seriously over-cool the evaporator. The vent temperature was really nice, it would pull down to 0 deg F. Way too cold, no matter how nice you might like it to be there. Things'll ice up. I saw such temps once on the Ebola Fishtank, when the filter screen at the expansion valve was gunked up. Any chance the fuel pump is shutting off when in 'run' position? They come on during cranking, but depend upon the RPM-sensor in order to stay running. The 380SL I once bought on the cheap acted something like that. I was kind to the PO, and towed it away on a rope rather than jumping around the relay and driving it off in front of him. Re: [MBZ] Similar Note - my 91 300D runing warmer - Time for Burping??
Since I started following JimC's advice and filling through the upper radiator hose I have had way fewer problems with air, just fill slow and let the air keep burping out until you see coolant come out the upper hole in the radiator, then jam the hose on and final fill to the bottle. IIRC it helps to have the snout of the car pointing up. Fortunately my driveway slopes up to the garage just slightly. -Curt From: LarryT l02tur...@comcast.net To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Sunday, July 13, 2014 2:12 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Similar Note - my 91 300D runing warmer - Time for Burping?? Re: [MBZ] Similar Note - my 91 300D runing warmer - Time for Burping??
Quick and dirty prime is to remove the pressure cap, squeeze the upper radiator hose flat, then crimp the small vent line to the expansion tank shut and release the upper hose. This will pull coolant through the lower radiator hose and heater core back into the head. If you have a bubble, the level in the tank will go down and stay down. Repeat, adding coolant as necessary, until the coolant just sloshes around and the expansion tank doesn't go empty. Fill to the middle line on the tank. If you did not test the thermostat before you put it in, remember that occasionally you do get a dead one in the new box Peter ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] Of batteries and clocks
Yup. Two of the them if memory serves me correctly. If you have basic soldering skills and the tools necessary to remove the cluster, it's an easy and cheap fix. Be sure to go with 25WVDC caps for replacements. Or maybe it was 50s. I just remember that the original caps are marginal as far as the voltage rating, which is one of the reasons why they fail. You can go up a notch with the replacements and should. Easily found at Radio Shack as I recall, too. Re: [MBZ] Of batteries and clocks
Anyhow after replacing it, the clock is kaput. Electrolytic caps? How gnarly of a job is it? The worst part is getting the hands off of the clock, IIRC. Two spoons, used as levers. (Bowls as fulcra.) This should help avoid breaking things. You can take this opportunity to repaint the needles if they're faded. IIRC a good color match is tangerine. This assumes you can solder without killing things, but as soldering goes it's a pretty easy one. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] Similar Note - my 91 300D runing warmer - Time forBurping??
I used to have air bubble problems in 617 cooling systems. They eventually go away after repeated coolant top-up. I was thinking of opening the system at the upper rad hose. I suspect there's a procedure for this. What works?? Yeah, the hand repaint is a good idea... What vendor paint did you use? I expect that you'd sort of mask the plastic head to keep it clean? Soldering isn't any issue, as I've a 7w iron and hands (just barely) steady enough to use it for some SMD work... but keep that RoHS solder (crap) away from me (you can pry my 63/37 from the clutches of my cold dead hands!) -- John W Reames jream...@verizon.net Home: +14106646986 Mobile: +14437915905 On Jul 13, 2014, at 16:21, Jim Cathey j...@windwireless.net wrote: Anyhow after replacing it, the clock is kaput. Yeah, the hand repaint is a good idea... What vendor paint did you use? It is Americana acrylic paint. Tangerine color, got it at the hobby shop many years ago.
