Re: [MBZ] W123 multi-purpose stalk
Long ago when I owned a 123 car, the windshield wipers began turning on whenever they felt like it. I removed the stalk, took it to bits, and cleaned with radio shack switch cleaner. I managed to get it all back into place and installed, and it fixed the problem and worked just fine until I sold the car a couple years later. When I bought my '95 sedan, the stalk would not activate the high-beam flash. Left it in place this time, simply removed the cover on the column which allowed access to the contacts at the base of the switch, and sprayed with De-Ox-It, the REAL stuff, and normal operation was restored. -- Max Dillon Charleston, SC ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. The new one I am getting is assistance in finding schools to further my education, so I play along. They want to know what I want to do, to which I ask them what fields of study are sure to be open for making $$ after my education is complete. Then the circle begins. I usually get a hang up but one time I kept them away from other foolish customers for 10 minutes. Recently I asked if the caller is in school, do they know anyone with school debt pulling shots for $10/hour. The caller said they were completing business marketing degree so I suggested to better market the company they need to foretell which fields of study will be open after the customer completes school - business marketing, ya know. It seems hard to fathom who these callers hook. Who is fool enough to follow the line? But, they must do a fair volume of biz because they are out there still. mao ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] Installing HP Printer was Korean malware FIXED
Since I have access to Apple's tech support library, I checked and found that the machine originally shipped with 10.5. It had been upgraded at some point in its past. It's the last of the C2D machines (2.4 GHz) and the first aluminum bodied MacBook. There's a somewhat obscure EFI firmware update for this machine that allows it to fully recognize a total of 8GB or RAM, where earlier C2D and CD machines could only support a maximum of 4GB. Apply the firmware update and you've got a much better machine that will support OSes up to and including Yosemite. It will be here on Monday. I'm going to grab a 256GB SSD for it this weekend and it will really rock once I get that installed. Not for HP. They shipped a disk with the basic Windoze OS on it and a second one with the froo-froo garbage they wanted you to load. They might have done it at one time, or now, but 4-6 years ago they were pretty generic. I know because I'm a former HP certified tech, and I've got stacks of the things Dan Dell hides a disc partition for their automatic recovery. Works very nicely...Until the HD fails. I don't know for sure if they do this on workstations and corporate machines, but on the consumer and small biz machines they do. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. True story. Junior Johnson was a moonshine runner and early champion stock car racer. He was sitting in a bar talking to one of the revenuers who had tried to catch him without success. The revenuer suggested that he go to one of race tracks in NC and sign up as a driver. He did, and was so successful, he gave up running moonshine. Not sure if he was a Baptist: "Johnson was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina, the fourth of seven children of Lora Belle Money and Robert Glenn Johnson, Sr. His father, a lifelong bootlegger, spent nearly twenty of his sixty-three years in prison, as their house was frequently raided by revenue agents. Junior spent one year in prison in Ohio for having an illegal still, although he was never caught in his many years of transporting bootleg liquor at high speed.[1] In 1955, Johnson began his career as a NASCAR driver. In his first full season, he won five races and finished sixth in the 1955 NASCAR Grand National points standings.snip http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_Johnson#Presidential_pardon Gerry Rich Thomas wrote: > All them ol boys were the ones who had already started drankin and > runnin shine > --R > On 2/5/15 12:02 PM, Randy Bennell wrote: > > > > No, I think Baptists love stock car racing. > > The south is full of Baptists and that is where stock car racing came > > from. > > > > RB > > > > On 05/02/2015 8:17 AM, Rich Thomas via Mercedes wrote: > >> Stock car racing could lead to dancing, perhaps even drinking and > >> s-x, so it is verboten. > >> > >> --R > >> > >> > >> On 2/4/15 9:46 PM, Max Dillon via Mercedes wrote: > >>> Had no idea there was a stock car race track. I have occupied them a few times by playing dumb. Because I sing tenor, they think I am a woman. Last time their next-level-up person asked me what operating system I was using. I know I use Linux, but I asked him, "How do I find that?" He started having me do something, but since I had been sitting there awhile, I told him I needed to go to the bathroom (which was true!). He said he would wait. I came quietly back and pressed the mute button on my phone and went back to the computer work I had been doing. After awhile of waiting, he gave up. **BUT**, they had previously had me go to a special website of theirs to log in (which NoScript prevents me doing) and then, when that failed, download indirectly through their website from legitimate companies which make desktop sharing software. I dutifully download the executable files, but for some strange reason, I always get the message, "Cannot execute binary file." :-) After the conversation was over, I looked up their website with whois and then contacted their website or DNS provider. The first time their DNS was provided by GoDaddy. I fired off an email to their abuse address. The second time their website was hosted by jimdo.com a website operator in Germany which provided ewss.jimdo.com. At their page http://support.jimdo.com/contact/inappropriate-content/ , I sent them this following message: Message: I have been repeatedly contacted by people who say they are from the "Computer Technical Support Department" who say my computer has told them it has problems. They want me to run applications on my computer to give them access to it. They have me go to the website at ewss.jimdo.com and tried various things to get a desktop-sharing program to run. The other day one started saying something in some language I could not understand, and after he tells me in English what insults he was saying about my wife. I threw in a few more bomb, Obama, Washington DC, allahuwa akbars, etc. He finally cussed me in English and rang off. So I'm thinking this ought to get NSA's attention monitoring inbound phone calls from "that" part of the world. I'm giving them plenty to work on. I'm hoping a coupla black Suburbans show up soon, and together we can find out who these guys are! (at gunpoint) Big topic here and now is if texas oil bazillionaires can use eminent domain to run a pipleline for their enrichment. Same for some other rich folk to run a DC powerline to the East, with no usage in state. It has been likened to allowing eminent domain to be used to build a private toll road parallel to I-80 with no on ramps or off ramps in the state. Put that way, it seems obviously wrong. As a pipeline or powerline, it does not seem so wrong, unless it is your land they want to tear up. They have found some loophole that will allow them to become a "public utility" with no customers, but then they can use eminent domain for personal enrichment. From personal experience, 2 overland highlines and one LP pipeline ran over our land when I was young. In each case, the company lied about what they would do and what they would not do. The contractors ran through muddy fields and made a huge mess each time. The companies did not pay restitution like they promised. Contractors/transmission companies will run through the fields and damage crops as long as the highline or pipeline exists without compensation. In theory, we need to move crude from ND to refineries. That is in the national interest. However, the landowners should get a piece of the action, not be screwed on installation, and screwed evermore. I had a couple at work this week with the bill collector scam where they say there's legal action being taken against you and give you the case number so you can call them and settle up. I called one back today and told them I was from the County's Security Department and I wanted the caller's name, their supervisor, information about their business, etc., so I could forward the information to the legal department for possible prosecution. The guy very hurriedly said, "I have removed your number from our list!" and hung up. Hee. I use Acronis Trueimage, and have used it several times. It's pretty user friendly and can shrink or expand volumes to suit a new drive. It also can do automated backups, but I don't use that feature. I think you can get a free trial perion, although I bought it on sale for about $10 IIRC. CloneZilla is good as are others. Most of these have walk throughs that show how it's done. I haven't cloned a personal (PC) drive in some time, so I can't offer specifics as far as software recommendations. I clone Mac drives regularly using Carbon Copy, a Mac program for cloning that's been around for years. I also use Disk Utility to make compressed image files for archive and backup purposes as well. Disk Utility is a native program that's been a part of the Mac OS for years, and it's probably one of the best things they ever put together in that regard. The PC work I've done has been enterprise level stuff, so the tools I used aren't typically available to the general public, or they're rather expensive for the average person. There have got to be some list members out there with PCs that are cloning drives. ?? Seems like they might want to re-think diesel trucks, buses, construction equipment etc. Those engines tend to be bigger and dirtier than most cars. I think a lot of the newer big diesel trucks are better than they used to be but there still seems to be a fair amount of black smoke coming out of trucks, buses, trains etc. RB On 06/02/2015 1:47 PM, Scott Ritchey via Mercedes wrote: Here it is: http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2014/12/01/france-planning-to-eliminate-diesel-powered-cars/ I also read London plans to follow suit. Re: [MBZ] Installing HP Printer was Korean malware FIXED
It is really no different if you buy a dell, etc. The restore discs are specific to that hardware. What Curt said. There is no downgrade path. Point of reference for the Mac folks out there: I bought a Late 2008 MacBook from someone this week. They wanted to wipe it before they sent it to me, so they tossed an OS X 10.6.4 CD in it it (it was running OS X 10.6.6), booted from the CD and ran the installer. Every time they tried this, the installer would fail, saying that "Cannot install OS X on this system." I had them erase and partition the drive, etc., all to no avail. So Wednesday night, after a good hour of email exchanges with the guy, who wanted to pull the plug and call off the sale, I asked him if the CD he was using was the original restore disk for the MacBook. "No, it's from the iMac I'm emailing you from." Restore disks for Apple products are hardware specific, that is, you typically can't use a restore disk from a laptop to restore a desktop and vice-versa. The image is unique and has drivers for the type of hardware only. The only media you can use cross hardware are retail installers. I told him to pack up the machine and send it and I would install a new OS. Oy. Re: [MBZ] Installing HP Printer was Korean malware FIXED
You'd reinstall everything. The problem will be fixing yourself up with a bootable copy of 10.x since you've likely got no install media. Apple makes this VERY difficult for you. They don't want you going to an older OS, they want you to upgrade like a good little droid. -Curt From: Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes To: Craig ; Mercedes Discussion List Sent: Friday, February 6, 2015 11:41 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Installing HP Printer was Korean malware FIXED Since I have an updated MacOS 109.5 how would I go back to 10.8? Don't know about the euro part but it does have a turbo, you can see the intake bow. It does have SLS as you can see the pump on the front of the engine and you can also see the hoses going to and from the pump just behind the radiator on the left side. Also just a little bit of the SLS reservoir is visible at the extreme left of the picture. There is however no AC or electric fan on the front of the engine and a strange looking vacuum driven cruise control activator. Never seen one like it on an 83 300TD. Re: [MBZ] Cloning Windows Drives [was: Re: Korean malware FIXED]
As I think Clonezilla is just a head-end for dd my experience is that the image just plops onto whatever size partition you have leaving the free space in that partition usable. There might be a parameter in Clonezilla for that which might also allow you to make the free space another partition but I don't recall. Looks like they stopped supporting this printer beginning with Mavericks (OS X 10.9). You can buy a copy of VueScan to support the scanning side of it, but I think you're out of luck on the printing side from the looks of things. Look at Apple's support thread on this at: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5495385 There may be a workaround in there. Re: [MBZ] Korean malware FIXED
Clonezilla works well but is not super intuitive. Make a bootable USB with unetbootin, then you've got a choice, if you've got another drive of the same size you can clone your disk to that drive. Otherwise you can make a disk image which will be much smaller.Last I played with it a Win7 disk image (just the OS, not backing up files) was around 9GB. A 64GB USB drive should cover you well for the OS and some media (documents, images and whatnot). The interface is utilitarian and since I don't do it often it always takes me a few fits and starts to get going. I've got a script for the computers at work that saves everything off to a network location. Taking a disk image to a Windows share is fairly slow but effective, its considerably faster to a USB drive. -Curt From: Dan Penoff via Mercedes To: Mercedes List Sent: Friday, February 6, 2015 9:35 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Korean malware FIXED Randy, There are any number of programs out there for free that will allow you to clone a hard drive. ?? Randy, There are any number of programs out there for free that will allow you to clone a hard drive. CloneZilla is good as are others. Most of these have walk throughs that show how it's done.
