I chased this with my 79 300SD and finally have it mostly under control.
First, I disassembled the vents and applied fabric tape in a few places.
Its been years, so I can't tell you where. But fabric tape is the trick
the factory still uses for issues like this, so its all kosher!

A light sandblasting will allow paint to stick to the chrome. Then
they can be primed and painted.

Clams never had it so good! Klaus came to me in 2012 as an impulse purchase
just because he looked solid. He wasn’t running…25 year old gas does terrible
things to really sensitive carbs (Zenith’s). Carb rebuilds, fuel hoses, fuel
tank clean, brake hoses, NOS distributor (THANK YOU JAIME),
...but he might need a phase converter.

At 1200 hours on the hobbs meter the diesel engine isn't even breathing
hard. That unit should go for 15,000 hrs without major repair.. At $1000
it's a steal me price for a diesel generator set made by Kohler.
200 KW would run things ... fuel cost per hour might be a bit, however,
at full load.
