[MBZ] Spit Polish my Valve Covers

2016-03-11 Thread clay via Mercedes
Not really. I picked up a set at PnP the other day. That, the switches, and a
wire harness/ECU. I am thinking I would use the harness as a template for my
own wire rebuild one day.

The valve covers off a M17 1973 were oxidized, and the insides were nasty.
Encrusted with burnt brownie sludge that all manner of solvents were finally
able to remove. With the help of a putty knife and wire brush that came clean.

Today I worked on the exterior. Gave it a scrub with green scratch pad. Then
hit is with 4000, then 5000 grit wet sand paper. The crusty came off enough,
but still some crud. I draped the covers in paper towel and did a phosphoric
acid soak. Pepsi stood in for real acid and the covers napped under damp towel
until it began to rain. I pulled the towel off and took the covers inside and
dried with newspaper.

I will have to hit HF to find buffing and polishing wheels and compound. I
have no idea how long this job will take.

Re: [MBZ] LED bulbs

2016-03-11 Thread clay via Mercedes
Blue is closer to sunlight. Morning sun light. Afternoon goes redder. Humans
use the blue light to be more awake. Blue light, such as video, florescent,
LED is not good for night use, unless you want to keep folks awake and not able
to sleep for hours. Red dash light makes it hard for me to see stuff, and I
get really tired by it

Weird, I never thought a 201 was lacking in dash brightness, maybe the 126 is
more 123 like?
Do the full Jim Cathey treatment, pull the cluster, line the light pipes with
aluminum foil. I also made sure the area around the bulb wasn't leaking any
light, if its melted like mine was it'd have deformed the housing some. Then
use the LED bulbs...

No.  Oh wait.  "With the energy savings you can buy yourself
a trip to Rio!"

Or maybe, that's what the vendor can do?  I think LED bulbs are
stupid.  There are a few spots where a brighter, cooler bulb
are good, like maybe a 123 dash, etc.  The LED color is usually
bad, garish, and often the lighting pattern is sub-optimal.

To clarify for others, you pick your car and to the right there will be a
little RSS link. On the next page they want you to set up the RSS feed, on the
right it says "Love a bargain" with an HTML link next to it, click on that and
it goes to the closeout page...

I’ve posted about this before.

You can go to the catalog entry for your car, click on the RSS or HTML link at
the far right of the entry and it will link to their closeout page of stuff for
that vehicle.

If you do an RSS feed, it will update you any time something is added or

They are the things that are flat metal with the rings on one end:

You push them into the slots at the bottom of the ACC unit and them pull it

You can make your own with a tinsnips. If you look at the area below the

2016-03-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Warm soapy water and a brush. You can use 303 on it after cleaning, but it’s
not necessary.

Outside - wash, clay bar, some polish if the paint is faded or chalky, then wax.

Meguire’s stuff is always a safe bet and fairly easy to find.

That's probably what's happening. Having owned a '86 190e, and then an '05
e320, I had no idea when that feature became common.
So a quick Martha question. The initial cleaning of the MB Tex and the
doors, warm soapy water correct? Do you use a microfiber towel or a soft
brush?

Just checked their prices - beats even Autohaus hands down. What are they
like to deal with?

WYSIWYG They make their money on freight.

RMeuropean or AHAZ are often cheaper when you get to their free freight level

$6 ea for Moog tie rod ends right now. either RH or LH Thread is in
carquest boxes.

I used to get whole tierods from Q for $12-14, but no more, so this
closeout is the next best thing. I put 2 on the heap and have a set
of 4 as spares.

Moog tierod ends come with a grease fitting, so you can shoot them
full of Molykote BR2 and extend the life several times over sealed
tierod ends, and you can relube.

[MBZ] My New-to-Me 98 e300

2016-03-11 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
Alright y'all, standby for random questions as I start driving this thing.
I have it back on the road after its three-year repose. Between my Indy and
me, we replaced glow plugs, replaced all fuel lines, replace the fuel shut
off valve, new tie rod, tie rod ends, idler arm, steering rack, AC service,
belt tensioner, new tires and a fresh alignment coming Monday. Tomorrow,
I'm going to go all Martha on itto the best of my ability. I took it on
its first trip out to the old nuke plant today and it drives like a dream.
I have to get a windshield washer reservoir, a dome light bulb, the back
light bulbs for the ACC, and a sun roof switch.
So...random question number one: after driving with the headlights on, I
get to my destination shut the car off shut the lights off get out the
driver's door and the lights come back on. I can't decide if this is an
issue with the switch (and I've cycled the pissed out of it knowing how it
works and knowing it has sat for a spell) or if it has something to do with
the lights coming on whilst I lock the doors (gotta pick up batteries for
the fob on the way home tonight) and the time out off. I guess I haven't
been patient enough to wait yet.
Has anyone who has owned one of these have any words of wisdom for me?

I’ve posted about this before.

You can go to the catalog entry for your car, click on the RSS or HTML link at
the far right of the entry and it will link to their closeout page of stuff for
that vehicle.

If you do an RSS feed, it will update you any time something is added or
