Ruminate on that a while.

Re: [MBZ] OT: political signs

2016-08-08 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I am sure it is not correct, but it was an illustration of some of the
top level taxes. Thanks for the info.

Max Dillon via Mercedes
August 8, 2016 at 11:30 PM
I think your A answer is wrong, twenty-five years ago, the estimated
cumulative tax on the average grocery store food item was about 75%,
counting all the taxes starting with the property tax on the land the
farmer used, to all the taxes at each stage of the chain that the crop
went through, to the final sales tax paid at the register. The
taxation power alone is unbelievable, and the effect is immensely
negative, on both prosperity and liberty.

Curley McLain
August 8, 2016 at 9:42 PM
That is not at all what I said. I gave you facts, and an opportunity
to answer your question, which I believed was a legitimate request.
You don't have to seek answers, but I will not spoon feed you.

A: The gooberment interferes with all parts of the economy, and and
has a huge influence on the prosperity, or lack thereof, of the
citizenry. This is done by taxes, yes, but more so by regulatory
burdens. There is no business, small or large that does not have a
huge regulatory burden. Wanna make some dog treats? You would not
BELIEVE the regulatory burden. Angie wanna make and sell some
cookies? Same thing, but actually, not as bad. Wanna make and sell
some gizmo for lanterns or snowmobiles? Endless regulatory burden,
and IF you happen to be lucky enough to MAKE some money, Uncle is
there with his hand out. Over 15% off the top for SS, then medicare
etc., then state and fed income tax, sales tax, tax and tax,
bummercare tax, Workmen's comp, and mountains of regulation. That
chokes more businesses than anything else. You will be looking at
40% to 65% off the top of your gross sales for taxes alone.

B: It is big, but it responds to certain things. The Tax cuts done
by JFK sparked huge growth. When RR did the same thing, and even
bigger, longer period of growth occurred, lasting through most of the
W period. The economy does not care if the tax is cut by D or R. It
will grow. The economy does not care if D or R raise taxes. Either
way, the economy shrinks.

C: No comment

D: There are only 2 or 3 ways out from where we are. 1. Financial
collapse, depression. 2. Number one plus revolution. 3 growth,
spurred and started by cutting the regulatory burden and the tax
burden. We can GROW out of the mess we are in, but it will take bold
tax and regulatory burden reforms.

The actual labor component of most products is in the single digit %
range. (5-9% of gross receipts) Exceptions are food service, retail
bakery and other labor intensive businesses. Those typically run 30%
to 40% of gross receipts.

Curt Raymond via Mercedes
August 8, 2016 at 5:38 PM
So to paraphrase:
RR and the Republican congress in '94 gave us 6 fold growth, Clinton
and Carter couldn't possibly have had anything to do with it.
Obama clearly gave us only 2 fold growth although half of the last 16
years had GW Bush and a Republican congress that clearly were doing
something awesome but Obama is such a terrible guy that doesn't call
his mother or wipe his behind properly that he limited our growth.

See on the other hand I think:
A. Government actually has very little to do with the economy
B. The economy is a big crazy thing that nobody really understands and
when somebody says they do they're probably selling something.
C. The economy is NOT rational for the simple reason that people are
not rational and will cut their own throat to make a buck.

It is not a fixed sum game. I'll take a stab at explaining.

In 1980, when RR was elected, the GDP was about 1.6 trillion per
quarter. The gooberment spent about 325 Billion of this amount. (or
about 20%)

In 2000, when W was elected, The GDP was about 8.9 trillion per
quarter. The gooberment spent 1.5 trillion of this. (or about 16%)
http://www.bea.gov/iTable/iTable.cfm?ReqID=9&step=1#reqid=9&step=3&isuri=1&903=10

So in the span of 20 years, the US economy grew roughly 6 fold. This
growth was the result of the RR policies, and the "contract with
America" of 1994.

in 2016, the GDP is roughly 16.5 trillion per quarter. The goobermnt
spent about 2.9 billion of this. (or about 17%)
http://www.bea.gov/iTable/iTable.cfm?ReqID=9&step=1#reqid=9&step=3&isuri=1&903=6
so, in the last 16 years, rather than growing 5 fold, the economy has
been choked, and grew only 2 fold.

Here are the questions for you to answer: (Yep it is homework)
1. What is the current national debt?
2. What would the quarterly GDP be in 2016, if the GDP had grown at the
rate of 6 fold in 20 years?
3. What would the gooberment's share of that

Re: [MBZ] OT: political signs

2016-08-08 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
That is not at all what I said. I gave you facts, and an opportunity to
answer your question, which I believed was a legitimate request. You
don't have to seek answers, but I will not spoon feed you.

A: The gooberment interferes with all parts of the economy, and and has
a huge influence on the prosperity, or lack thereof, of the citizenry.
This is done by taxes, yes, but more so by regulatory burdens. There is
no business, small or large that does not have a huge regulatory
burden. Wanna make some dog treats? You would not BELIEVE the
regulatory burden. Angie wanna make and sell some cookies? Same thing,
but actually, not as bad. Wanna make and sell some gizmo for lanterns
or snowmobiles? Endless regulatory burden, and IF you happen to be
lucky enough to MAKE some money, Uncle is there with his hand out. Over
15% off the top for SS, then medicare etc., then state and fed income
tax, sales tax, tax and tax, bummercare tax, Workmen's comp, and
mountains of regulation. That chokes more businesses than anything
else. You will be looking at 40% to 65% off the top of your gross sales
for taxes alone.

B: It is big, but it responds to certain things. The Tax cuts done by
JFK sparked huge growth. When RR did the same thing, and even bigger,
longer period of growth occurred, lasting through most of the W period.
The economy does not care if the tax is cut by D or R. It will grow.
The economy does not care if D or R raise taxes. Either way, the
economy shrinks.

C: No comment

D: There are only 2 or 3 ways out from where we are. 1. Financial
collapse, depression. 2. Number one plus revolution. 3 growth, spurred
and started by cutting the regulatory burden and the tax burden. We
can GROW out of the mess we are in, but it will take bold tax and
regulatory burden reforms.

The actual labor component of most products is in the single digit %
range. (5-9% of gross receipts) Exceptions are food service, retail
bakery and other labor intensive businesses. Those typically run 30% to
40% of gross receipts.

Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: political signs

3. What would the gooberment's share of that be, if we limited the
goobermnt to 17% of the GDP (per quarter)?
4. How many years would it take to pay off the national debt if the
difference between the actual gooberment expenditures and the amount the
goobermnt would have taken in was applied to reduce the national debt?

5. If that difference were applied to Social Insecurity, where the
average payment is now $1200/mo, (rather an applied to paying down the
national debt) what would the average monthly payment be now?

I await answers from the group.

As you research and determine answers to these 5 simple questions, it
will become obvious how much damage has been done in the last 8/16 years.

[MBZ] 97 e300

2016-08-08 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I finally pulled my 97 e300 out of the shop today after a long period of me
slowly replacing glow plugs, and all the fuel lines and seals under the
manifold. Took it for a drive today after being used to driving the 98 turbo.
Boy is it slow. Actually I am not sure if it's normal slow or if there is a
problem slow. I cleared the engine codes and had an egr code come back which I
thought was because I didn't have the crossover pipe completely sealed yet. I
cleared it again and had a check engine light come back on during the test
drive. I bets it's egr again and that may reduce power.

[MBZ] Ac again

2016-08-08 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Yesterday I posted about the expansion valve swap curing the ac not cooling and
the clutch barking. Drove he car today and it seems to have cured the ac not
cooling once it reaches set temp, but the barking had returned. It only does it
when the car is good and hot and it's hot outside. Also at idle such as sitting
in a parking lot it does not seem to cool at all. The only other thing left is
the compressor itself. By contrast the ac in the 95 e300 and my 97 e300 will
freeze you out while just sitting there idling.

Perhaps I could interrupt the political discussion with some car talk.
You might recall I bought some new (used) fenders for our '05 Golf. Yesterday I
welded a patch on to the driver's side fender's lower rear mount. It would
appear salt and water collect there as both had some rust. I brushed the rust
off the other one and stuck both into a bucket of citric acid.
Today I pulled out the passenger side, brushed the rust some more and gobbed on
some phosphoric acid (naval jelly) since as I brushed back some of the paint I
found a little more rust. It required another treatment of the acid to ensure
there was no rust at all. I then washed it good with water and denatured
alcohol, primed and shot a good heavy coat of black paint. This is the back
side of the panel mind you so the black won't matter on a blue car.
The color match paint hasn't arrived yet.
Tomorrow I'll clean up my patch some more and repeat the process with the

debating a primer coat, I guess it'll depend if I can get off just the color

Maybe we can't. Or shouldn't.

Years ago, there was a rebellion caused by folks who had banks
foreclosing on their land because they hadn't been paid as
promised by the government. Thomas Jefferson's comment was:

And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers
are not warned from time to time that their people preserve
the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is
to set them right as to facts, pardon, and pacify them. What
signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of
liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of
patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.

I just had kinda a sideways thought since this is not the first time somebody
on the list has used the "its not a zero sum game" argument.
How come when a Republican wants to cut taxes and spend money its "not a zero
sum game" but when a Democrat wants to spend money they're a "tax and spend
liberal"? If government spending makes more money isn't it always good?
Both parties spend more money, they say they don't but their actions refute

Re: [MBZ] OT: political signs

2016-08-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
So to paraphrase:
RR and the Republican congress in '94 gave us 6 fold growth, Clinton and Carter
couldn't possibly have had anything to do with it.
Obama clearly gave us only 2 fold growth although half of the last 16 years had
GW Bush and a Republican congress that clearly were doing something awesome but
Obama is such a terrible guy that doesn't call his mother or wipe his behind
properly that he limited our growth.
See on the other hand I think:
A. Government actually has very little to do with the economy
B. The economy is a big crazy thing that nobody really understands and when
somebody says they do they're probably selling something.
C. The economy is NOT rational for the simple reason that people are not
rational and will cut their own throat to make a buck.

Curt, maybe you and Andrew can form a club, maybe called the Rose

I only hope your sick on election day and can't vote. Nothing serious,

Re: [MBZ] OT2?: political signs

The executive board gives the shareholders an idea of the plan. The employees
get to have insight into the plan. In my experience big customers tend to get
let in on the plan. We the people should know the plan in advance. Otherwise
its "trust me" which I don't for basically anybody.
Besides if he had a great plan he'd be telling everybody in detail. I recognize
that most politicians don't give much detail but Trump gives zero.
I heard him today talking about how we're going to use more coal and steel,
doesn't say for what. Doesn't seem to care that renewable energy has as many
workers as coal. He also says he's the candidate of the future but his future
sounds to me like the 1950s.

BTW did you notice I'm not a Hillary supporter?
Something I find interesting in some folks who support either Hillary or Trump
is that they only listen to part of every sentence. Once they hear you're not
supporting their candidate they stop listening and start formulating their next
sentence. Politics has become talking, not discussion. For discussion you have
to listen...

Probably would have anyway. It had 40% support from Dems and 97% support from
Republicans.
That says to me a House of 80% Dems and 20% Rs would have been pretty evenly
split. Even I thought we needed to finish what GHWB left undone there. But
mostly, we managed to prove that not invading Iraq was one of the smarter things
GHWB did. (and not telling Saddam "if you mess with Kuwait, we'll kick your ass
into the Dark Ages" in clear and convincing language was still one of the dumber
things from the GHWB administration)

Spotted this Thursday, SWMBO was interested, so today I recruited
Floyd to take a look with me. It's a 1995 E320 convertible, white with
grey interior.

This car DIDN'T run when parked a couple years ago!

Long story, basically owner died while car was at shop, shop sat on
car, finally shop moved locations and abandoned car gets towed, tow
truck company owner gets title, now tow truck co. owner decides to
dump it, three weeks after posting it on Craig's list I call, and a
few hours later we have a deal.

Supposedly the car needed a fuel pump and some repair to the gear
shift linkage, when it was delivered to the shop.

Now it needs a lot more work! Drivers window has been down for two
years, and that is just the start. Convertible top is probably
inoperable. Center console is torn up pretty bad, probably from when
the "mechanic" was "diagnosing" the linkage. Ignition cylinder is all
jacked up, and the keys are missing. Engine coolant tank was empty,
and there was a partial jug of pre-mixed coolant in the trunk. Engine
oil looked normal, so I don't think the engine has a blown head
gasket, but that is yet to be determined.

Hmm. Metric only? Metric and Imperial? In the picture, all I can
see is metric.

How does it lock? I happen to not like the the style that is

My wife reads all the hearing testimony and the released emails. From
what she passes on to me, I can only surmise that the people who are
still supporting Hillary have their heads so far up their butts that they
are looking out through their ears. If the establishment wants that POS
Paul Ryan more than Trump, then the establishment republicans need to be
dumped. Ryan is a POS in the mold of Boehner. Hillary is just a plain
liar and a crook. If women want a female president, then at least pick a
good female. The polls again are like statistics, you choose the sample
and you get the results you pay for, but it doesn't mean they are
accurate. Trump needs to keep speaking plain talk, that's what energizes
his base, not kowtowing to advisers and media types.

Call it falseflag or small venue implementation of plans.
Turkey is a nice country not unlike the States, political democracy.
Same festering type politic is real in Turkey as has been being

Such rabble rousing always results in violent conflicts, as we have seen

Protestors at Trump rallies kind of deserve what they get. You see an angry dog
on the street and you get bit by it you deserved to get bit. You go protest at
a Trump rally, something is gonna happen and I bet they aren't going to bake
you cookies.
Garrison Keillor had it right when Bush got elected, Republicans send hate

It is my observation the word "angry" is improperly applied to the
majority

of the American public. It seems more likely the word "disgusted" would be
more correct in encapsulation the tenure and tone of the bulk of
unrepresented Americans.

News media lives by the "If it bleeds it leads" rule, so their natural
inclination is to select words that are an inflammatory as possible in
their reporting, thus also in their poll taking.

While there are classes and colors of Americans who express how they feel
as "angry"... the root cause is really "disgust", because their
expectations are not being met.

This "disgust" is expressed by the "politically correct" crowd in passive
aggressive wording carefully crafted to appear not to insult those they
wish to insult and chastise. This disingenuous verb-age serves to further
disgust anyone who feels differently, thus further widening the gap of
good

communication.

We now have, as a society, become quite dysfunctional in expressing our
"disgust" at how others are acting, and have progressively lost the
ability
to communicate plainly, which, by necessity, often results in one
person or

group telling another person or group, in plain language, to "get the hell
off my lawn".

It is my considered opine that good social order requires boundaries and
limits. Our present practices of social order routinely insults the
established boundaries and limits. Those insults are carried further and
deeper by the passive aggressive political correct responses now practiced
by a select few who have self appointed themselves as sole arbiters of
society mores.

Which disgusts me. A lot.

from the (J) party.

So this story is reporting that the (J) party propaganda is making the
dumb masses angry on purpose.Same tactic used by Lenin to overthrow
the ruskie goobermnt. This all fits with the real (mostly hidden)
agenda of the (J) party (AKA Mar xist party)

- January 6, 2016

- About Kevin

It seems every time I scroll through the latest news stories, I can’t
prevent my blood from starting to boil. With all of the injustices in the
world, I imagine many Care2 readers can’t help but get angry. If it’s any
comfort, we’re not alone in experiencing this news-related rage. A new
Esquire

& NBC News poll

found that Americans are angrier than they’ve been in a long time.

This sense of rage is coming on quickly, no less. A full 50 percent of
Americans report being more pissed off now than they were a year ago. The
majority of U.S. citizens say that the news upsets them at least once
a day

at this point in time.

Altogether, just 11 percent of people surveyed say they get angry at the
news rarely or once a month. The largest share, 37 percent, report getting
angry once a day, while 31 percent say they get heated over the news a few
times a day. The remaining 20 percent say they feel anger on a weekly
basis.

The statistics on *which* demographics

are getting angrier are perhaps even more telling:

- White people
- Women
- Republicans
- The shrinking middle class

While African Americans were most likely to get angry at headlines about
police brutality and discrimination, on the whole, they still tended
to get

less angry than Caucasian Americans. Overall, blacks were more optimistic
about life and still had more faith in the American dream than whites.

As for white people, they were more likely to claim to be victimized by
something or other. They disproportionately thought they were making less
money than they should and blamed circumstances beyond their control for
this lack of success. 21 percent of white men were angry at the
mistreatment they claim to suffer in this country.

Researched chalked up women’s heightened anger to them having a greater
sense of empathy. Women were more likely to feel bad when people other
than

themselves were negatively impacted by the world’s injustices, therefore
causing them to be angry more often.

While Republicans were more likely to get angry multiple times on a given
day, make no mistake that Democrats’ fury was on the rise, as well.
However, the types of issues that upset each side don’t generally sync up.
Is the hostile political rhetoric that has emerged in the recent
presidential campaign the result of this heightened anger or are we just
getting angrier because the political rhetoric is getting more hostile?

For the record, I don’t think the collective anger this country is
experiencing is entirely a bad thing. Sure, it’d be better if we all had
nothing to be angry about, but given the issues facing the world today, it
makes sense that people are emotionally disturbed by the news. If people
weren’t angry, it’d probably indicate that they weren’t paying attention.
The rise in anger is a sign that more people are aware of the suffering
going on around them.

At the same time, anger is only productive when we channel it into
something better. If you read bad news and fail to take action, then
you’re

just another negative person in a negative world. If you devote time to
trying to fix the injustices you hear about, then that anger is at least
worthwhile since it inspires a step toward making the world a more
positive

place.

When I’m feeling really pissed off, I like to sign online petitions
hoping that my voice and name will help
to bring about some positive change. What are some of the ways you try to
channel your anger into something positive? Share with the Care2 community
in the comments.

Re: [MBZ] OT: political signs

2016-08-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The way Trump is imploding lately I'm starting to give credence to the idea.
He's stopped announcing his poll numbers and started crowing about how the
election is rigged...

Trump  is being bought by H->.  She needed a complete disaster to be able to be
seen as a viable candidate.  With Trump, the road to election is paved.  He was
not ever a real GOP sort.  Trump cozied up to H-> and the perv for years.
There must be a deal they struck to pay him to run and the DNC is playing
along.  See how they screwed over Bernie?  The underlings went around screwing
over the other GOP dudes so that Trump would be the only one left at the end of
the day

Re: [MBZ] OT: political signs, taking the measure

2016-08-08 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Back when American tool companies made stuff in USA, I always preferred Lufkin
tapes to Stanley Powerlock. The rocker switch lock on the Lufkin didn't make the
blade creep back 1/8", and the Lufkin had a rubber bumper pad where the blade
hook hit upon retracting.
The ones I bought in the 1980s looked like this:
http://www.lufkintool.com/tapes/tape-measures/lufkin-hv420-1-x-20-hi-viz-r-orange-power-return-tape-measure.html

Lufkin now has 1 3/16" tapes, stand erect to 10' instead of 7', but I can see
where that English tape has some advantages too:

Re: [MBZ] OT: political signs

2016-08-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I think Hillary has a plan where the numbers have a reasonable chance to add
up, its pie in the sky of course but rooted in reality. Trump basically has no
plan since three of our economies couldn't make it work.
The thing the democrats seem to see better than the Republicans is that you
can't "start over" because you can't STOP. This is not auto mechanics, its
heart surgery, you have to do it while the patient is alive. Thats my argument
against the repeated "repeal Obamacare" votes, other than wasting time you
can't repeal and replace because you need to structure first. I would accept
"incremental modification" which is the only way it could possibly have a hope
of working but of course that doesn't work in sound bites...
Regulation and stupid tax policy comes from both sides. When you get right down
to it the two parties (the parties mind you, ignoring the candidates) differ
only in what exactly they want to screw up...
Grid-lock is actually what we need, the government that governs best governs
least. If we'd had an R congress in 2008 we wouldn't have Obamacare. If we'd
had a D congress in 2003 we might not have gone into Iraq. Its when one party
is in control that things go badly...

Curt, do you think Hillary's plan (more of Obama's plan) will somehow work this
time, because   Yes Trump is playing on fear, which is very real for a big
part of the population.  Trump didn't create that fear, but he certainly has
figured out how to tap into it.  Hillary is attempting to tap into fear as
well, fear of Trump.

Trump (as a businessman) should understand (I'm hoping) that the real key is to
get the economy fired up and rolling again, which will generate tax revenues to
fund his plan (which we all know is typical campaign pie-in-the-sky, as general
and attractive-sounding as possible to his base).  Regulation and really stupid
tax policy, which has been building for decades, are finally about to choke the
country into bankruptcy.  Medicare and SS cannot be saved without getting the
economy going, and I'll pick anyone over Hillary to see if they can do better
than just picking up where Obama left off.  Remember that the house will
probably stay Republican, so I think we'll just get continued grid-lock from
WDC under Hillary.

Thats the kind of plan somebody thats been bankrupt 4 times would come up with.

Trump hasn't got one idea that could actually be accomplished, all he's doing
is playing off the fears of the mindless many.

Change Hillary to AIDS and I might tend to agree with you...
The way things have been going, if Trump can give us four years of static
gridlock he'll be the best president since Reagan.

Mitch.
