Re: [MBZ] Fixing floors

2017-01-28 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Kaleb,
That is the saw I had in mind.. I bought one, liked it so much, I bought a
second one. If you use just a bit of inventiveness you'll find ways to cut
things you never thought possible..

BTW.. Home Depot also sells a saw like it.. for lots more money.. however
the blades will work on the Harbor Fright saw, and they are better
quality.. worth the few bucks.

Obviously you need to find and fix the water intrusion first. There may be
more than one leak so don't declare victory to soon.

Also the sill plate looks like it needs to be replaced, preferably with
pressure-treated lumber. The sill plate is the piece of wood that lies flat
on the foundation (and is normally bolted to the foundation) that supports
the ends of the joists.

Yep!

you might try running it around the edge of the tiles to see it they
will pop up as Grant suggested. BUt it is good for cutting right up to
the wall.

When you are finished cutting stuff out, be sure to span the joist
spaces where the patch will meet the old subfloor with blocking so the
subfloor does not flex between the joints. (the tongue and grove in the
sbfloot is supposed to do this in new installation.)

I would look at doing the whole job from the top side, instead of trying to

Harbor Freight sells a nice [cheap is nice when it works] flush cut
vibrating saw with all kinds of different blades. I would use one of those
with the grout cut blade to section the tile back far enough to gain access
to the underlay board. This could be done in such a way to preserve the
tile and reuse it. There is a blade that will go under the tile and
vibrate/cut the grout, thus releasing a row.

From that space, use the flush cut blade [you'll see what they are when you
see them] to cut the underlay board out [in pieces if need be] which will
then give you access to the floor joists. The flush cut blade will allow
you to cut right up to the drywall of the sidewall, without damaging the
drywall.. I've done this using a 6 inch drywall knife behind the flush cut
blade to keep it off the drywall surface. A piece of flat sheet metal would
do the same. The drywall knife just has a handy handle to move it along
with the saw.

With a working opening, from the top side, sectioning out the damaged
joist, and sistering in fresh wood with screwed and glued plates would be
"easy peasy"...

Cut a new piece of underlay board to fit the surgery hole.. screw it to the
"now fresh joists" and relay the tile you just salvaged... even the broken
tile would re-lay with solid floor under it.. there might be a hairline
crack, but I would Gorillia glue the pieces together, and lay it.. match
the grout..done and dusted..

Saws are on sale often at Harbor Freight.. $40 or less..

Then I'd cut out all the rot, leaving only 100% solid wood, and run TWO
replacement joists, one nailed and glued on each side of the rotted
ones, with 2' of overlap, so it goes from solid original joist, to
triple joist, to double joist at the end. If it's only rotted for a few
feet at the end, materials for the double reinforcement shouldn't cost
much.

An excellent idea!

If the tile is unbroken now, and you can knock the grout out and cut the
plywood out in tile sized pieces, maybe you have an excuse to buy a gas engine
high potency pressure washer to blast the wood/mastic off the back of the tiles
so you can reuse them?
That way you don't have to buy or cut any tile.

I never heard of a car alternator needing remagnetizing, but it seems to happen
a lot with portable gensets that have sat for years. I'm guessing that a car
alternator is battery excited and not subject to this problem, maybe

It is easy! The bavarian elves got lost in the shipment, so it didn't
work when first installed. By the time you needed to move it, the elves

I don't remember if I mentioned it but the alternator quit in my '98
Jetta on the way home from work Wednesday.Today I picked up and
installed a used one, PITA job, the engine bay is tight and I think
the alternator was probably original at 279,000 miles. These have an
interesting one way clutch that I had to transfer to the replacement,
glad I ordered the tool to remove it...
Anyway when I got it all installed it didn't work, the idiot light was
still on and battery voltage measured around 12.5v. I was pretty
defeated at that point. A little later I had to move the car so I
could push some snow (well ice really) off the driveway, the first
time I revved the engine the light went out...Not to look a gift horse
in the mouth I used the car to go over to the park to walk the dog,
idiot light stayed out, heater fan ran, seat heater on.
When I got home I put the meter on with the engine running, 14.8v just
like you'd expect.
Is this something I should have expected? I don't remember going
through this before but its been a few years since I've changed an
alternator.

OK. I got thinking about wind and weather yesterday. High pressure,
low pressure, wind, weather, butterfly effect and crap. Homeostasis.
Then I tossed in teleportation. You always see these folks just VANISH
with no impact. But there should be one, right? You are displacing
volume and mass. It leaves one place (void) and appears in another
(explosion?) So, you make a low pressure zone and then displace in
another. Implosion/explosion Aparate/disaparate

Could the wizards be making the weather by popping in and out of
existence? Like maybe matter/atoms just showing up. How much of an
impact would I create by being teleported? Take a 100 k mass, 1.78m
tall with a circumference of maybe 60cm. I pop out of one place and
into another. How much of a pressure drop would that involve? Since I
change location, then my volume needs to be compensated for, so air
flows into the void of where I was and is displaced from where I show up.

A bunch of wizards (or visiting aliens) are popping in and out of
existence, making the surface pressure get all messed about. What
happens if one of the aliens, because they be in space, in a ship or
someplace which would end up INCREASING our gross inflow, gets taken
by the government and experimented upon, such that he does not return
to his place of origin? He does not make as many landings as take
offs. Now we have excess mass/volume and the alien place is missing an
equal amount of dude. Is this the real root of global climate change?
Maybe we should return the alien carcasses to where they came from.

And would you not get the bends doing this teleportation? Blood gases
increasing and decreasing instantly must have a terrible impact. I
know inflight discomfort from leaving a one bar place and ending up in
a tin can with atmospheric pressure of 6000 meters, then returning to
that 15psi situation.

OK.  I got thinking about wind and weather yesterday.  High pressure, low
pressure, wind, weather, butterfly effect and crap.  Homeostasis.  Then I
tossed in teleportation.  You always see these folks just VANISH with no
impact.  But there should be one, right?  You are displacing volume and mass.
It leaves one place (void) and appears in another (explosion?)  So, you make a
low pressure zone and then displace in another.  Implosion/explosion
Aparate/disaparate

Could the wizards be making the weather by popping in and out of existence?
Like maybe matter/atoms just showing up.  How much of an impact would I create
by being teleported?  Take a 100 k mass, 1.78m tall with a circumference of
maybe 60cm.  I pop out of one place and into another.  How much of a pressure
drop would that involve?  Since I change location, then my volume needs to be
compensated for, so air flows into the void of where I was and is displaced
from where I show up.

A bunch of wizards (or visiting aliens) are popping in and out of existence,
making the surface pressure get all messed about.  What happens if one of the
aliens, because they be in space, in a ship or someplace which would end up
INCREASING our gross inflow, gets taken by the government and experimented
upon, such that he does not return to his place of origin?  He does not make as
many landings as take offs.  Now we have excess mass/volume and the alien place
is missing an equal amount of dude.  Is this the real root of global climate
change?  Maybe we should return the alien carcasses to where they came from.

And would you not get the bends doing this teleportation?  Blood gases
increasing and decreasing instantly must have a terrible impact.  I know
inflight discomfort from leaving a one bar place and ending up in a tin can
with atmospheric pressure of 6000 meters, then returning to that 15psi
situation.

[MBZ] Alternator question

2017-01-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I don't remember if I mentioned it but the alternator quit in my '98 Jetta on
the way home from work Wednesday.Today I picked up and installed a used one,
PITA job, the engine bay is tight and I think the alternator was probably
original at 279,000 miles. These have an interesting one way clutch that I had
to transfer to the replacement, glad I ordered the tool to remove it...
Anyway when I got it all installed it didn't work, the idiot light was still on
and battery voltage measured around 12.5v. I was pretty defeated at that point.
A little later I had to move the car so I could push some snow (well ice
really) off the driveway, the first time I revved the engine the light went
out...Not to look a gift horse in the mouth I used the car to go over to the
park to walk the dog, idiot light stayed out, heater fan ran, seat heater on.
When I got home I put the meter on with the engine running, 14.8v just like
you'd expect.
Is this something I should have expected? I don't remember going through this
before but its been a few years since I've changed an alternator.

Re: [MBZ] physix problemz

2017-01-28 Thread MG via Mercedes
That would depend on how it was done. If your teleportation
machine transplaces the same volume of air in the one place with
you at your location then there is a lot less of a problem. The
pressure differential in the air can be taken care of by
transporting the full contents of a cylinder from one location to
another with a pre transport increase or decrease of the pressure
in the originating cylinder to match that of the arrival cylinder.

As you earthlings say easy peasy.

Re: [MBZ] Fixing floors

2017-01-28 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I would look at doing the whole job from the top side, instead of trying to
lay on my back under the house, since the tile underlay boards have failed
also.

7k is ok for a nice car in good shape with no major maintenance on the
horizon.

My dad hopped into the e420 at the airport the other day and said "how much
did you pay for this car again?" I said 7k. He said "this is a lot of car
for 7k".

Feels like a steal compared to alternatives. It basically looks new from 10
feet. Low taxes, cheap to register etc.

It's almost comical to feel like I have to justify the price, given what
people drop on new cars these days.

Re: [MBZ] Dropping glass...Question for Craig

2017-01-28 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
That reminds me of something inconsequential I remember from college
dorm days. The dining hall had a tile floor, and occasionally guys
would drop glasses. They would either smash on the first hit, or on the
second. There would always be a round of sustained applause when this
happened. One day a guy dropped a glass and it hit and bounced, then
hit and bounced again, 4 or 5 times and did not break! It was like
blinkblinkblinkblinkblink with the diminishing time between each one as
the bounces got smaller and closer. This was a new world record! It
got a standing O that went on for a long time with hoots and hollers and
cheers and the glass was retrieved and enshrined in the dining hall hall
of fame (at least until some guy stuck it in the dishwasher).

they mostly did not break IF I caught them on the first bounce. If not,
they would always shatter. I was a frequent visitor to Fisher
Scientific to replace the pieces I missed. Standing waves? There must
be some scientific explanation of this phenomenon. Anyone? Craig?

I have noticed the phenomenon myself -- I first saw it demonstrated in
college when I was working in the food service kitchen. One fellow was
putting drinking glasses in a tray to then put in the dishwasher. He
dropped a glass and it broke on the second bounce.

My only explanation is a guess that the first bounce induces stresses in
the glass and these don't have enough time to equalize before the second
bounce.

But that's just a guess.
