[MBZ] OT Tampa Mayor

Just watched an ABC interview with the mayor of Tampa. Seems like Dan's town
has it's stuff together, and is well prepared for this storm.

Re: [MBZ] How is Hurricane Irma Now?

2017-09-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Category 1 by the time the eye passes us later tonight. From a neighborhood
weather station about a block away, we’re seeing gusts to about 40 mph. More
to come as the night goes on, but it’s weakened considerably, thank goodness.
We still have power, but that could change at any moment as well.

[MBZ] How is Hurricane Irma Now?

2017-09-10 Thread Craig via Mercedes
Dan,

The radar plots show Irma as going north to the east of you now,
though the Weather Bureau at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/#Irma comments,

..900 PM EDT POSITION UPDATE... ...IRMA EXPECTED TO TURN TOWARD THE
   NORTH-NORTHWEST OVERNIGHT...
9:00 PM EDT Sun Sep 10
Location: 27.1°N 81.8°W
Moving: N at 14 mph
Min pressure: 942 mb
Max sustained: 105 mph

The winds have slowed down, though 105 mph with a lot of water in the air,
I'm sure, isn't pleasant.

Since it closed as USAF Sondrestrom Air Base in Sep '92, the Greenlanders
have promoted it heavily as an all-season resort - hiking, camping, fishing,
hunting, boating, cross-country skiing, exploring ice cap and glaciers,
snowmobiling, dog sledding, etc. 'Seem to be doing quite well at it, too.
You should go; fantastically beautiful summers; many interesting and
beautiful sights year-round.

Suburban amenities? Well, I certainly never thought of it quite like that,
but it does seem to have plenty of hotel space now (former military
barracks/dorms); hot and cold running water; coupla restaurants; adequate
transportation ("school" buses throughout the "village"/air field), busses
for transport to edge of ice cap/glaciers, etc.

That's interesting, Wilton. If you interrupt the coriolis severely enough it
will stop and then re-form a variable time later, won't it?
That makes me wonder if you exploded a number of those huge bombs the AF now
has in the walls of a hurricane coriolis; say from a flight of the planes
you flew; if that would break up the hurricane? It would be an interesting
experiment anyway unless it's already been tried.

Gerry

Yes, by by swirling my hand around the hole in clockwise direction, I was
able to overcome the counterclockwise rotation caused by the Coriolis effect
and make the pool rotate clockwise temporarily. Each time, after I stopped
swirling by hand, the rotation would slowly stop (not abruptly) and return
to its natural, counterclockwise state.

As for nukedet in a hurricane, I think its hot, rising column of hot air
would create localized tornadic-like action soon (well, eventually, anyway)
to be overcome by the much larger system as long as it has an energy source
such as a large, warm body of water beneath it.

Note that he is talking about evacuation zones. That’s low-lying areas, which
is most of the downtown and surrounding areas. We’re not in an evacuation
zone. In fact, our property is on the fringes of Zone 5, which if activated,
would mean there would be storm surges of over 30+ feet expected. The house is
at about 38 feet above MSL.

Right now storm surge is expected to be less than 10-12 feet, if that.

Re: [MBZ] Irma

2017-09-10 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
We were at a seminar on weather, focused slightly on aviation, at the
National Weather Center Friday. They showed us at least a dozen different
models of what Irma would do, and the output of the models run at different
times. The Canadian model was the only one that showed Irma running up the
West side of FL.

They were telling us that the polar winds and air masses over the Northern
Pacific were driving the path of Irma - and with the scarcity of good data
from those regions, predicting the path was difficult, though getting
better as they refine the models after comparing the predictions with what
actually happens after every event.

It was very interesting, and we actually learned some things.
FYI - there no talk about global warming or climate change, just that the
ocean is warmer then usual now, which makes for larger, meaner storms.

That would be one way to approach it. In my case I prefer to protect the cars
of value.

The eldest hasn’t been home in a month and probably won’t be for some time, as
he’s now a team driver for an over the road trucking firm (Prime?) We hear from
him occasionally when he’s swapping loads but otherwise he’s pretty much out of
the picture. I’m not sure why he even insures the car, to be honest. I would
like for it to be gone as it’s taking up space. You would think he could park
it at their terminal, but the one he works out of is in Alabama, I think.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Generator Heads

2017-09-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
A rule of thumb is to divide the engine HP by 1.5 to get the generator kW. At
1800 RPM you would be good for about 9kW based on the 14 bhp rating on the spec
sheet I looked at.

Looks like a 10kW Marathon “MagnaPlus” would do the trick:

http://www.marathonelectric.com/MGPS/details.jsp?item=281CSL1513&voltage=240/120//120&hertz=60&phase=Dedicated%201&brand=MagnaPlus&type=Standard

However, I’m sure you can find an imported generator of similar size for less.
As long as the alternator is set up with the same SAE flywheel adapter and
drive disk it will work.

I rode my bike over to the beach this morning to check out the action,
tide is up but not a lot of churning at this point.  Went back over just
a little while ago at high tide to see what was going on, it is probably
about 2ft higher than usual, though today and tomorrow are high
astronomical tides.  Winds tomorrow will be onshore at 44-47 at high
tide time, so there will likely be more of a surge than now.  Met a
family there from Tampa who had bailed out and were staying here, Bubba
had his bass boat behind his bigass truck, so I am comforted that the
Redneck Navy has arrived!  But got me thinking about everyone else down
that way and hoping y'all stay safe.

I think we will be OK, certainly better than the models were suggesting

The SL500 and E320 are in the garage. The E320 is our bug out car in the event
of severe damage and is currently loaded with a full tank of fuel, bug out bags
and a secure locker with all of our important papers. The 350SDL is pulled up
nose in to the garage door in front of the SL500. Behind that is MIL’s Buick
Regal, pointed at the street and ready as a secondary bug out car if needed.
Eldest son’s E300D is in the parking pad to the side of the garage, and is the
most exposed. That’s mainly because he has no comprehensive insurance, so if
it gets hammered it’s toast.

The next rain band is about 30 minutes out, with the bulk of the storm expected
to hit around midnight. Kitty is freaking out, as she can’t see out of any of

[MBZ] Q and Paatz

2017-09-10 Thread Fred Moir via Mercedes
Alles.

The Mighty Tenth Q went off without a hitch!

A good time was had by all !

If you want to know how good, come next year, ya-shouldda-been-here. (Though
Irma provides a good excuse. be safe.)

Thanks are due mostly to the sterling efforts of Dwight, Karen, Curt and Angie,
with a minor chorus of supporters.

Paatz.

For the Westy.

   1. Oil service wrench. Snap-on S5902 17x21 mm.

   2. Valve adjusting 13 mm wrench. Cornwell X2304 13 mm.

Address needed.

For the W124 300D.

  1. Grill. it is worn but un-rusty and whole, needs a good polishing perhaps?
  2. Right front fender. car-part.com has many RF fenders of the correct sort,
condition unknown. Some with good pictures.

For the grill, address needed.

Rancho Cordva CA is near Sacramento and has some (in pictures) nice RF fenders.
This may be too far for Curt to forage.
HTH.
