Re: [MBZ] 747

2017-11-23 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
The new 737 is pretty much a total re-design. Stronger fuselage, better flight
controls, probably new wing cross-section (although that may have been already
done). The "old" fuselage is the original 707 design, and has been considered
far under strength for some time now. New one should be as tough as the 777,
which is pretty much indestructable as airframes go. You can even slam it into
a runway pier at 180 mph and nearly flip it over and still save all but a
couple passengers, and was demonstrated un-intentionally at SF.

I would be more of a C-47 guy. I was trying to get a handle on how much
interior space it had. It would obviously be a two story, but how many bedrooms
upstairs, how many rooms downstairs, etc?
There are so many millionaires/billionaires in this country, there are probably
quite a few who would build one if they wanted to; maybe finish it out like one

Re: [MBZ] Happy Chillin' Thanksgiving

2017-11-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Here are the numbers based on an A.O. Smith 50 gallon hybrid versus a 50 gallon
conventional:

Hybrid/Conventional

Annual energy cost: $85/$307

First hour rating (gallons): 66/75

Cost: $1284/$672 (local sales tax included)

Warranty: 10 years/12 years

UEF: 3.42/0.95

No tax credits - they lapsed in 2016. Dang it.

I don’t know - the hybrid is pretty compelling. I can let Lowe’s carry the cost
for 24 months as well at no interest, and I get cool air out of the deal with
the hybrid.

I’m thinking the hybrid. At roughly $200/year savings the difference will be
recouped in three years. In six years it will have effectively paid for itself
in energy savings over a standard electric water heater.

Let’s let Mitch digest those numbers and correct me if necessary.

With the fuselage gutted, maybe you could use one of those heavy lift

Odd. I _just_ replaced mine. 50-gallon Rheem conventional electric.
$400. (22 years ago I spent $300 on the same thing.) They offered an
intriguing stainless-steel option at around a 50% premium, but the 2-week
delivery time was a deal killer.

That's pretty compelling, how trustworthy is that payback figure? If your
numbers are good, the hybrid can pay for its entire _replacement_ in only
two years, against your other option. Is it likely to last two years?

I’m just concerned about reliability and the controls - if they flake out

A valid concern. But, it's a _hybrid_ heater. There's still a
conventional element or two in there.

2017-11-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
True. It could have totally crapped out and that would be ugly. Not so for
me, as I can do a Navy shower if necessary.

I’m just trying to decide whether or not to go with the heat pump water heater
($1200) or a conventional electric heater ($600-$700).

The hybrid heater will pay for itself in a year or less, along with lowering
temps in the garage since it’s working like an AC unit in reverse and dumping
cold air into the garage. There is also a tax credit for it this year, too.
I’m just concerned about reliability and the controls - if they flake out
nothing happens. At least with a conventional water heater you can still have
one element working (like mine right now) and get some warm water.

Anyone out there have one of these heat pump water heaters, or know someone who
does? I’ve looked at them closely over the past 4-5 years and they seem to be
pretty reliable. A O Smith seems to be the leader as far as sales. GE was
doing them but I don’t see them any more.

What I don't like about the combination wrenches I bought is the box ends are
straight not angled so you can flip them to change direction. The whole point
of the usual 15 degree angle is to get your knuckles away from whatever the
bolt goes into.

MATCO has some nice ones, fixed box on one end, reversible ratcheting box on
the other end. Break the tough ones loose with the fixed end, the flip the
