here is the sock i have most of:
https://www.smartwool.com/shop/men-socks-hike/trekking-heavy-crew-socks-sw0sw131?variationId=043
I have a few of the medium and one of the extra heavy mountaineering.
THe medium are ok in summer, but wear out faster. The Mountaineer extra
heavy need another size bigger boot. So these ramain the favorite.
Warranty is only 2 years, so Curt's Darn tough are better in that respect.

My feet were always cold standing on cold concrete in the winter. With
these, my feet never got cold. $21 unless you catch a sale.

Re: [MBZ] 747

2017-11-24 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Yup.

The cause of the accident is fairly complex though.

The principle cause, although this is not widely addressed, is that air traffic
control at SF is notorious for giving final landing authorization long after
the aircraft is past the initial point in the glide slope. It's bad enough
that "go arounds" are quite common since it's dangerous to descend at high
rates of altitude loss during final approach.

What happened with the 777 was that late authorization was given, so the plane
was well above the proper glide slope altitude but committed to landing. The
pilot selected "flight change mode" for the autopilot to allow a fairly steep
drop down the the proper glide slope, and forgot that that particular setting
disables the auto-throttles on the engines. I believe it's intended for fully
manual flight, but someone with more knowledge would have to chime in on that,
I'm reporting what I gleaned form a variety of on line discussions.

Since the autothrottles were disabled, and the autopilot does NOT report that
when "flight change mode" is selected, when the aircraft entered final approach
near the end to the runway, the engines did not spool up and it descended
faster than normal and may have stalled, then hit the seawall.

The pilot was in fact not very experienced with the 777, but the ALPA has
complained to Boeing quite a bit about that flight system according to the
pilots posting on forums. The causes of the accident were pretty well agreed
on by 777 pilots within a couple days, as many of them had been caught unaware
by the "flight change mode", and most US airlines seem to train more for that
issue, it's deadly on final approach and should never be used while landing. I
don't know how clear this is in the flight manuals or in the training Asiana
gave it's pilots.

However, my personal take on this is that while improper training or improper
use of "flight change mode" was the direct cause of the accident, the 777, like
all modern computer controlled aircraft, will land itself quite nicely in the
conditions at SF that day, but because the delay in final landing approval
caused the aircraft to be seriously out of position when final approach was
initiated, the pilots had to use unusual measures to get on the glide slope.
High rates of descent in heavy jet aircraft with swept wings is ALWAYS a risk
near the ground, it takes quite a bit of engine power to halt the descent, and
it takes about 8 seconds to get full power out of a high bipass engine when it
is initially in idle. There were several bad accidents in the 60's in 727s for
this reason -- you can drop one of those birds at 10,000 ft per minute, but you
better put the power on fast when you want to slow that rate. They don't
bounce very well.

Safety isn't about punishing people for making errors, it's about eliminating
the cause for errors and preventing unintended actions. Yes, the pilot made a
serious error, but the only reason he did is that ATC failed to authorize
descent until he was 1000 ft above the upper limit of the glide slope.

One could also question why an altitude change mode would disable autothrottles
as well -- it's sort of like a cruise control that disconnects if you change
lanes as far as I can tell. At the very least, the pilot should be visually
and audibly warned that autothrottles are disabled. It's not possible to spool
a turbofan engine up fast enough in this scenario.

The good thing is that the 777 is an amazingly tough aircraft. If you haven't
watched the video in slo-mo of the crash, you should. it's not very clear, but
it is obvious that the aircraft very nearly stood on it's nose after the
impact, but the fuselage stayed intact. A very similar accident at Boston
Logan with a 727 in the early 70's resulted in nearly complete disintegration
of the airframe

I think so. I like the heavy Smartwool hiking socks. These look to be
equivalent. I don't think smartwool has the lifetime guarantee. I have
worn them out.

As an Aside, I saw a Smartwool red/black traditional woodsman/hunting
wool jacket in Rochester MN. It looks as nice or better than the
Woolrich one I got probably 40 years ago. Woolrich has always been the
best, but it looks like they have competition now. I didn't see the
price, but the same place has Irish dunger caps for $28 to $140. As far
as I could tell, none were made in Ireland. The $28 ones were chinee,
but looked as good as the more expensive ones.

You have to dissect the rotted pipe stub out of the muffler, insert a new pipe
into the hole in the side of the muffler and weld the new pipe to the sheet
metal on the muffler. Since the steel is thicker on the pipe, you have to
direct the mig nozzle more towards the pipe and weave the puddle into the sheet
metal carefully so as to not burn through the muffler but at the same time get
good penetration on the pipe.

I dont' thing there is 2 " of pipe off the muffler.  I think the only
thing that MIGHT work is to have a connector section that is smaller and
fits up inside the muffler.  At the end of the day it probably needs a
new muffler.  Which it being a 1 year only sort of deal is $300+ iirc.

If there is at least 2" of pipe in front  of the muffler, grind off
the welds, and use the tin can hose clamp bandaid.   It is cracking
from vibration.  the bandaid releives the stress and vibration.  I
have run those on 200Ds for 40 + years.  You need to replace the can

Wow! 22 years of patch jobs, now that’s impressive! Might take you up on the
resonator and muffler offer! The last exhaust I repaired was on the 240 that
Curt gave me (formerly Dwight’s)-the one with the head issue. I repaired the
muffler and resonator with sheet metal as well as replacing a good amount of
the pipes. Whole thing cost me $90 in parts from flaps that I pieced together.
It fit better than an OE exhaust as I pretty much tailored it to car!

Re: [MBZ] 240D exhaust repair

2017-11-24 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I need to do something about the exhaust on my 95 e300. It started breaking off
close to where the pipe runs into the rear muffler. I welded it up, rather
poorly probably as it was my first time. It lasted a couple of weeks then
started breaking loose again. I welded it some more but it probably won’t last.
I need to pull it off again and see about getting some sort or connector that
will fit over or in the pipe and weld that.

2017-11-24 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Nice work! (as always) I broke down and put new exhaust on both
240Ds. From crockauto the price is not so bad I patched the
exhaust on the 81 for 22 years. the front pipe kept rotting away.
Methinks it was a flaps replacement sometime, while the rest was
original. I have a good muffler, and a good resonator in the shed. If
you ever need either, you could weld them on.

Dimitri via Mercedes
November 24, 2017 at 4:49 PM
So the entire exhaust with the exception of the front pipe fell off
one of my 240Ds last November while driving locally. I pulled over,
picked it off the road and ratchet strapped it to the roof rack. I
drove the car sans exhaust for the remainder of the winter- neighbors
loved me! As I was busy with a massive rental property renovation, I
had no time until now to deal with it. Basically the pipe rotted at
the flange where the front pipe and remainder of exhaust attach.
I bought a section pipe slightly wider than the exhaust, cut off
rotted flange and welded it on, effectively creating a new flange. I
then bought a new front pipe from Rockauto for a whopping $20. So for
a grand total of $35 including shipping, new “flange”, and new clamp,
I effected a permanent and high quality repair!

Re: [MBZ] Happy Chillin' Thanksgiving

2017-11-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Due to the age of my house (coming up in 20 years) a lot of major systems are
getting to the point of requiring replacement. Just did the AC in March of this
year, probably going to need to do the roof in another 2-3 years. We replaced
all the major appliances when we moved in roughly six years ago.

When the home warranty people looked at our house they saw all of this, and
quoted us accordingly. If my memory serves me correctly they were wanting
nearly $200/month six years ago. Do the math, we would have lost money big time.

This is nothing more than a form of insurance. They’re betting you won’t need
it, you’re betting you will.

In this case, we came out ahead significantly.

Re: [MBZ] Isn’t this way too cheap?

2017-11-24 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

Author seems way to knowledgeable to be giving the car away, plus he can't keep
his story straight:

This a documented 2 Owner 280SL.
I have the orignal pink GA title from the 2nd owner transfer from 1974.
(doesn't sound like "I am the 2nd owner", does it? That would make it a 3 owner
car)
One owner car (so, are you the first, second or third owner? Enquiring Minds
want to know)

Professional restoration - Either I just spent $20,000+ restoring this car, or
I just did $20k worth of work to it, and that's why I want to sell it for $17k.

Mitch.

Might be a little late, but do you have a Homeowners Warranty? Our policy
has been a godsend as we have replaced a water heater and repaired
dishwasher, washer, and dryer since moving in. Warranty charges a $50 co
pay per incident. Well worth the $45 monthly premium.

I have no idea what your comment infers. My mechanic previously worked

offering some additional information.

I’ve flown on most, if not all, of the variants. -200, -300, -400. As
you might expect, the -400s were the nicest. Got to make the trip
across the Pond to the UK in the bunk room on the top deck one time
because my business class seat back broke. Upper deck was full and I
wasn’t about to go sit with the common folk downstairs. The cabin crew
asked if I could sit in the crew bunk room since it wasn’t occupied
(trans-Atlantic flight, only one crew) and they said, “Sure!”

That was nice. Like having a private, albeit very small, suite.

They are big honking aircraft, that’s for sure. You should stand on
the tarmac under one some time to get an idea of their incredible size.

2017-11-24 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Kaleb,

Just some xtra info. My mechanic once told me that if a diesel doesn't
start and you continue trying to crank it that you will "wash down the cylinder
walls" and lose compression and it will never start. He said the fix is to
remove the glow plugs, pour oil into each cylinder, replace the glow plugs and
let it sit overnight. He said it will now regain enough compression to start,
assuming the glow plugs and fuel are ok and battery can spin fast enough. It
would seem a simple try before doing a lot of work to include replacing the
engine.

Just a suggestion.

Best Wishes and hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving,

Roger
