Re: [MBZ] My latest pre-Regina’d copart purchase

2018-04-27 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
*According to Wikipedia:*

"Mercedes-Benz revised and updated the W163 in 2001 for the 2002 model
year. Styling updates involved the fitment of new head- and tail-lamp
lenses, front and rear bumpers, new alloy wheels on most variants, the
relocation of the side turn signals from the fenders to the side-view
mirrors, and various interior trim changes. At the same time, the ML 430
was replaced by the 5.0-litre V8-powered ML 500 and a new 4.0-litre V8
turbodiesel ML 400 CDI became available in Europe. The following year, *in
2002, Mercedes-Benz launched the ML 350 fitted with a 3.7-litre V6 engine.*
The ML 350 replaced the ML 320 in some markets, but supplemented it in
others.

The W163 was available as a seven-seat version, with two seats in a third
row. Access was problematic and the seats were not suitable for large
adults so the seven seater ML-Class was discontinued after the 2005 model
year and replaced by the larger GL-Class.

The previous Popemobile was
based on a W163 series ML 430 and has been in service since July 2002.[13]

Volkswagen had offered to build
a new vehicle based on the Touareg
, but Pope Benedict XVI
 opted to continue using
his predecessor's Mercedes-Benz-manufactured vehicle."

What's 'secondary damage to side' mean, other than the mirror is busted off?
Front damage appears to be the lower valance.
Fog bezels aren't great, but at least I can see the reflector through the lens
on the right one.
Interior looks OK, but the nets are shot as always.
Can you bid on it? If minimum bid was under $200 I'd throw a bid on it just to
make sure private individuals were allowed to bid.

IT has been my go to for the past year. First use took the gunk off that the
wheel cleaner spray could not. Every time I wash the car I give the alloys a
shot, then wipe the wheel clean. Rinse with hose water and it looks good as
almost new. No damage to the original coating/paint in those months. The back
side of the rims had lots of clear coat damage. The fronts, which were cleaned
with the stuff have no damage.

I can tell you the guys who were fighting the fires didn't have

About the same overall condition as my 2003 when I bought it.

[MBZ] Today's 400E Fun

2018-04-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
While my roof is being done I decided to take the day off and work on the 400E
some more, since a car had to be trapped inside the garage as the roofer’s
rolloff container for the old roofing had to be placed in front of the garage.

Took the sagging headliner out, stripped the headliner board and fabric, and
reglued everything.

It was unpleasant and if this wasn’t a $650 car I wouldn’t have done it this
way….

Getting the headliner out wasn’t bad, just time consuming. Dealing with all the
disintegrating foam that came out of it during the removal was not fun.

Stripping the old foam and glue from the headliner “board” wasn’t bad, nor was
stripping the fabric. In fact, the stuff came off the fabric pretty well.

Regluing the old fabric was a PITA, to put it bluntly. While there wasn’t any
problem with stretching it or making it fit, without the foam backing to mask
the contour of the board every little bump and dip showed up. One could easily
blow this off as it’s not terribly noticeable once the headliner is back in the
car, but I know it’s there….

Anyway, got it all back together after dinner and it no longer hangs down on
the rear seat passengers. I left the B pillar covers loose, as I’m going to
pull them tomorrow and reglue the vinyl covering on both.

For a BUCK, the stuff is awesome! I found it does not oxidize metal, unlike
other cleaning solutions. Full strength, it can eat the kruft off the
underside of a car. It washed the thick gunk off the differential and axles.
Stripped the muck off the engine from drool and leaks of oil over years. As
for the underside, it was coated in a thick layer of baked on soot, about 4mm,
that required a few applications. Now the factory gold paint shows.

It does really well on brake dust. Spray on, wipe with a sponge, and no more
darkness. Safe on the rubber.

Re: [MBZ] OT old gasoline

Some time back, I collected about 30 gallons of "abandoned gas" . It was at
least 10 yrs old. I ran it through a water filter to remove as much water
as possible, and have been feeding it through my various diesel trucks [all
Ford with 7,3 diesel engines] by adding a gallon to a tank of diesel...
tank size is 18 gallons. To date. no issues. The diesel eats it just fine,
disposal issue solved.

Besides, now I can tell my non diesel friends who ask what kind of "gas
mileage" I get with the trucks that I only use 1 gallon of gas for 300
miles... ;))

Re: [MBZ] OT Chernobyl

2018-04-27 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
As with any disaster, it's never a single line failure, however, that
pretty much sums up the start points.

After the fact it was determined the containment vessel was far below both
design strength due to sub standard Russian concrete and re-bar, coupled
with a myriad of other design flaws in the nuke plant that failed, in
sequence, allowing the system to go critical.

It seems there are many sequence parallels between the Japan nuke plant
failure and this one, once it went critical...
Might be a really good time to rethink and rework our existing plants...
yes?

If it smells like gasoline and is clear in color, run it in a lawnmower, it's

[MBZ] Kumhos are Kumming

2018-04-27 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Feeling flush today, I ordered a set of215/55R-16 Kumho Ecsta PA31 XL
tars from Tire Rack for the $500 E300D that Kleb was slow to pull the
trigger on, I am going to get that thing on the road now that it is
running OK.  I can deal with the GPs later or just let them go, the car
starts just belches some smoke.

$323.68 then a $75 rebate so that is pretty cheap, $250 for a set,
shipping wasn't much to an installer close by, no tax.  I guess they
will be in sometime next week, they are only coming from Savannah so
close by.  I'll need to go deal with the DMV and get some plates to
drive it over there, sigh...  But with a few parts I bought I'll have
that thing going for <$1k, not a bad deal. I'll have to see if a shot of
AC juice will get it to BLOW ICE COLD.Kleb will have to pay me $2k now.

I'll have to keep checking the knacker for a front fascia, make it look
like less of a junker. Max we need to get up to Don's again sometime
soon and pick around on stuff.

Also ordered a couple of Michelins to replace the fronts on the SD,
Michelin Defender T+H SLthese are the closest I could find to the
Michelins on there.  Not too many tires in the 195/70R14 size.*

I was reading some info online last night about the Chernobyl disaster.
The sad thing is that the reactor was doing fine. No issues.
BUT they decided to run some test of a  procedure to cool the reactor if
it started to overheat.

They pumped in water and it turned to steam that blew the top off.
That may be over simplification, but essentially that appears to be what
happened.

They don't tell you what they sold for, you have to watch the auction in real

(sometimes I record the auction and review the prices later).
This one sold to a bidder with an Illinios address for $7900.
Was already bid up to $6300 before the live auction started.

...knock -off bundt caps

I refinished a set of junk yard bundts last month or so. Gave them time to
cure fully before I bothered to mount them. The rims look great. I took them
to the tire store to get fresh shoes and let the shop call me when they were
ready to put them on Allen (SD). Then, the old bundts got the rubber removed
and I took them home yesterday.

I was surprised at how quickly 35 years of brake dust came off. No need for
wire wheel, just coated them with the LA totally Amazing yellow cleaner and it
washed right off, but for the spare, which had not been removed from the car in
a few years, so had not been subjected to wheel cleaner. Extra scrubbing and
now I am at the initial sanding stage so I can do curb rash repair.

The old hub caps though look like garbage, and my collection of caps are pretty
bad too. All had been painted over previously. They would not take fresh
paint, so I tried paint thinner. That did nothing. The paint stripper came
next and was able to dissolve old paint well. Well, that worked for the real
caps. There was a non-standard cap. Black body. Must have been PVC, and it
melted.

The dental tools were able to remove any lumps of stuck on paint. That made
the caps ready for a sanding and then a coat of silver to match the stuff I
used for the wheels now on the car.

I wonder what I should do with the melted lump of black goo?

[MBZ] Quotes pages Wuz: WARNING!

2018-04-27 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Quotes pages need to be reinstated. some of the ones there are real
classics.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote:

I found the “Quotes” pages from the old mbz.org lists recently. Reading it
brought back a lot of fond memories and seeing names I hadn’t heard or seen in
many years was enjoyable as well.

Because there is profanity and a fair amount of scatological and other forms of
inappropriate humor, some members of this group may find it, well, offensive.
With that in mind I wanted to post a warning first so that when you see the
post, which will be labeled “Quotes Page” you can simply delete it without
scarring your mind or reaching for the eye bleach.

And no, there are no pictures, just quotes, so no concerns for Banned level
material.

Enjoy. Or not.

In 1980, I was building a house, and SAC was doing low altitude training
with B-52s. They would fly over often, low. THAT is AWE!

When they were keeping constant watch over Nikki and his successors up
through Gorby, i'd see the contrails several times a day.

If I was able to fast enough, I'd wave to the crew.

Same year we were told no fallout from Mt St helens 2000 miles away,
but I could hear it dropping through the trees, and it got thick enough
it covered maybe 20% of the ground. I still have some somewhere.

The first phrase learned at your new job after taking an "Art History
Major" degree is:
"Would you like fries with that?"

I've often thought of writing a PhD thesis titled: "The cause of advanced
degree holders failure to gain employment in the employment market".
However, it always said everything and covered all the causes in only two
pages. ;))

I would be concerned that the demand for old Mercedes will fade. I cannot help
but think that the buyers are older folks.
I don't know that the younger generation appreciates them like we do.
I am afraid that they yearn for a Prius and not a diesel Mercedes.
They have been trained to think of diesels as bad.

Similarly, with the Barrett Jackson auctions of old muscle cars. They are in
demand by wealthy senior citizens that wanted one when they were in high school
and can now afford to buy a nicely preserved example. The kids don't want these
cars and have no use for them. The successful young folks want a new high end
vehicle.

Re: [MBZ] Best car wax

2018-04-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have wandered aimlessly through the world of waxes over the years, going from
inexpensive to expensive, etc., etc. I am of the impression that whatever one
likes best is the best product for them. It’s almost as tough as discussing
proper motor oil.

I have been using Collinite Liquid Insulator Wax #845 for a number of years.
It’s easy to apply, not terribly expensive (under $20 for a 16 oz. bottle) and
it holds up really well in our climate. I’ve come across a lot of detailers
who use it as well, which is where I first learned of it.

A solid go-to is 3M Show Car wax, or whatever they’re calling it these days.
For that matter, I highly recommend any 3M product, as they’re “honest” in the
description of what they will and won’t do. I’ve found that’s not the case
with some products, like Meguire’s. Meguire’s seems to err on the side of
caution as far as performance with a lot of their detailing product. That’s
not a slam on Meguire’s it’s just something I’ve found when using them and
something I take into consideration when I do.

I used to use Zymol some years back, but didn’t feel like it held up that well
in my climate. Nice stuff, pricey, for sure, and gave a really nice finish,
not to mention it smelled like the beach (sun tan lotion.) I moved away from
it to the 3M Show Car wax as I felt the 3M product stood up longer and was far
less expensive.

Now if I had a very expensive garage queen/show car that rarely saw sunlight I
would probably go back to a heavy carnuba based wax like Zymol, as those
finishes really look good with it. Not so with the daily driver.

Yeah talked to the FedEx people on the phone already and they
called back within 20 min but in the end was told I had to wait
till Sat. as that was how long they had to find and deliver the
packages.

I always have gone out to talk with the drivers when they found
us as in the case of the FedEx previous drivers who it seems have
had more and more trouble finding where we live as new drivers
come in. UPS used to at least in years past bring the replacement
drivers around and introduce them but that hasn't happened in the
last 10 years or so. They still seem to know where we are and
find us. May be that they have a database with locations and
directions that is available to them.

You can call

FedEX Customer Service1-800-GoFedEx
  1-800-463-3339

and complain very vociferously.

I have signed up for free accounts with both UPS and FedEx. One of them,
UPS, I think, allows you to specify where and under what conditions
packages are to be left. Both will send you emails, when requested,
regarding package shipping progress.

When we moved here, the UPS driver knew where we were, but the FedEx
driver was relatively clueless. The first time I had a FedEx parcel (a
refurbished laptop) I had to go outside and wave my arms as the FedEx
vehicle drove on the road outside the subdivision. Once he stopped and
came to our front gate and I told him who I was he knew where we were.

I have found going out and talking with the drivers help. In my
situation, it's relatively easy to see them coming. In your case,
not so much ...
