The shop that will be doing the frame swap is willing to 'purchase' the
bed-less leftovers from me, primarily V10/tranny/transfer/rear-diff, for
roughly a $750 reduction in the charges.  Basically now quoted at $2,750
for the swap, plus whatever front-diff gearing changes might be needed.
And, no hassle!  Basically I'm getting half my money back out of the donor
truck.

[MBZ] Trucks, on-topic

I just bought a 4x4 Mazda B2600 LX to use as a woods truck.  Stick shift,
decent condition, no rust.  1987 model year.  The only notable thing about
it is the OM617 turbo motor, and that the fan and radiator are on the front
side of the grille, behind the brush guard.  $2500.  Will replace the POS
gas Chevy that I'm sick of fighting.  Not as big, not as strong, but I bet
it'll always start when I want it to.

The glow plug light should only illuminate during start sequence.
If there are glow plugs out, the glow plug light will not
illuminate.

If it is illuminating at random, it could be ignitions switch
(telling the relay to start counting) or more likely the relay
itself.  That's where I would start testing, anyway.

Can't legally cover both ears in WA either.  The Blue Parrot headset really
does work well at noise-canceling (on Tx) in the car.  Callees, when asked,
say that they can hear me perfectly.

One of three things, in rough order of likelihood:

1) Bad glow plug, and you have a newer status-reporting relay.
2) Bad ignition switch, is triggering a spurious glow cycle.
3) Bad GP relay.

indicating the glow relay has pooped the bed, or does this mean I have lost a 
GP or two?

CBT Clean, Bright, Tight . is the rule.

When you take the cable clamps off, look for black oxide coating on the
posts and cables. This material is apparently the greatest insulator known.
It kills battery connection completely.

Once clean, I always coat the posts with dielectric grease. Seems to
preserve the surface nicely.

The 10-22 is surprisingly inexpensive.  I’m seeing them new around here for 
around $230 out the door.

Thanks again to all - it seems like the Ruger may be the choice, depending on 
what my gun shop has hanging around.

Like I said earlier, I think I’ll go out tomorrow afternoon and look around as 
the weather is going to be crappy and the spousal unit is going to be busy 
helping a friend cater her son’s graduation party.

If I were to get a semi-auto, it would be the Ruger 10-22 take down. I
recently bought a Ruger American Rimfire as I've always wanted a bolt
action rifle. Also, this was my first new fire arm purchase - first one
registered as well.
I really like it - smooth to operate, feels precise, and is accurate to
boot. It uses the same magazines as the 10-22.

I'm looking for a decent, though not expensive, scope for it now.
The Bushnell red dot sight is a definite improvement over the "iron" sights
that came with the rifle - I don't like the rear sight.

[MBZ] Sdl strange electrical issue

So I drove the sdl all over tulsa today running errands. Made several stops. 
When I started it back up once it had the problem. Started it cured it like 
normal. When I got ready to leave from the next stop the car was completely 
dead. No power at all. I checked the battery connections and while tight, the 
positive cable did move just a hair. So it appeared tight but not completely. 
Jiggled it a slight amount and car started. I bet this has been the issue all 
along.

I have the Ruger 10-22 take down model. Easy to haul around as the 
barrel comes off. Comes with its own  pack sack sort of carrying case.

Thanks everyone, you’ve given me some good information to go on.

I’m not really that worried about accuracy, so the Mossberg and others, while 
they sure are nice looking rifles, are probably more than I want to invest.  I 
agree that a 10/22 is probably the one.

Since it’s going to be raining like crazy here all weekend thanks to Tropical 
Storm Alberto I think I’ll go over to ye olde gun shoppe and see what they 
might have….

When I was a teen, I used to plink twigs, smaller in diameter than a .22 
bullet, with my Marlin 60. That'd be about as cheap as it gets. 

Ruger 10/22 is always a safe bet. Buy one used, sell it for breakeven when you 
get tired of it. 

If you want top accuracy, $400 should get you a bolt action CZ or a Marlin 2000 
target rifle. 

I've got a Winchester 75 for that sort of duty, but those are expensive 
collectors items now. 
Might find a Mossberg 144LS for a fair price. Like my Winchester, prices 
bottomed out 30-40 years ago so you can't really lose money on one.

If it went to somebody I knew, I'd leave the hitch on it.  

But 19-22mpg on Premium leaves me feeling sour every 400 miles when I fill it

FedEx Ground contractor just delivered Chinese Remy alternator #2. Looks good, 
time to put it on the ML and see how long it lasts. 

I handed him #1, he scanned it and told me I was all set. 
So that saved me a 55 mile round trip to FedEx to get rid of the busted one.
