I have an over large spares collection.  I wish I could get more folks to take 
some of it home.  Good for me though, I have enough spares to handle many 
situations.  Like when #2 boy clean and jerked the dead battery out of the 
trunk and snapped the threshold plastic.  Or, the window motor that farted.  
Bolts and screws when  #2 boy drops one or more behind the door card.  And when 
the transmission shop needs a part that has become NLA to their supply chain.

[MBZ] This $500now$900E300D

[Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes]

I drove the thing this evening. I dumped a can of liquimoly fuel additive in 
about half a tank. It is actually starting and running better and better. It 
handles and rides tight. Had a lot of fun acceleration and I’m using all of it 
as often as possible. 

This weekend I’ll see if the AC will hold vac and try to get that BLOWING ICE 
COLD. It was 95F when I got into it this evening. Didn’t think it was quite 
that warm today but maybe. But with windows down it wasn’t half bad. 

I’m liking this thing. I might go look at that apparently dead 210 wagon this 
weekend. See if I could get it cheepcheep and swap some bits around.

The 92 SD had not started for the wife at random times a couple of times and 
she had to get a jump. I think she said battery light was coming on sometimes? 
I never saw it. Everything I checked it, it seemed to be charging to me and 
battery light was not on, and it started right up. We stopped driving it for a 
while. Today I have to get it back into service quickly so I checked it further 
and it seemed to only be putting out at about 12.9-13 volts at idle with the ac 
running and fans blowing. Turning that off it would go to about 13.3 or so. I 
pulled the voltage regulator and the brushes were worn almost all the way down. 
I pulled one out of another alternator but it was some off brand but had good 
brushes. Put it in and battery light stayed on and was not charging. Found 
another Bosch one that looked like it had good brushes. Put it in, started car 
and light was on but went out as soon as I revved it. With the original 
regulator and alternator this is what I had done for many years, light would

Similar problem with an air handler blower capacitor at church last weekend.  
Bad cap.  When the fixer (church member neighbor) checked the other unit he 
found the wires connected to the wrong (5 mfd  vs 20 mfd) capacitor tap.  The 
motor current dropped about 6 amps when he corrected that connection.  Another 
cap read way below the rated value.  I plan to be more vigilant checking those 
caps from now on.

[MBZ] list fixed?

Last weekend, while not receiving list messages, I tried to 
unsubscribe/resubscribe. 
That failed when I didn't receive the subscription verification email, 
apparently okiebenz got put on some global ban list that my email provider, 
1and1.com uses. 

Just now I sent a message to the Banned list which I was still subscribed to. 
I got the message in my inbox. 

So then I went to the mercedes list subscription page and resubscribed. 
I got the verification email this time, and was able to verify my list 
membership.

Not to mention the value of checking to see what's wrong and shutting the 
system down if you can't fix it yourself. 
Running the compressor without the condenser fan is a good way to need a 
compressor replacement if you just let it keep going. 

I lost a fairly new dehumidifier that way when the fan quit and the dumb think 
ran all night. Guess they figured pressure safety switches were an unnecessary 
added expense.

I used to water my indoor plants with CFS, and give jugs of it to friends. 
It was the brown stuff in the bottom of the bucket after I ran the gravel 
washer in my fish tanks. 
If you're still guessing, concentrated fish shit. The best fertilizer I've ever 
used. 

I'm guessing in this instance, it's steak he's talking about, battered and 
fried like the Colonel would do to poultry.

And why did the global blacklist keep the list out of my inbox for several 
days, then it came back for most of a day, and now it's mostly blacklisted 
again?

And back to Max's AC: Even more valuable than having spare parts is watching 
and noticing that something's wrong instead of just letting it run without a 
condenser fan until the compressor is toast. I lost a fairly new dehumidifier 
that way, it was built without any safety switches and apparently ran all night 
without a fan. The compressor still runs but no longer compresses, which makes 
the whole thing a $300 piece of scrap.

That Mercedes engined flood titled Jeep that sold for, IIRC, around $4k last 
month?
Well, the buyer put a battery in it, put the airbox back where it belonged (it 
was in the back when I saw it six weeks ago) and tried to sell it through 
Detroit CoPart today. High bid $475, reserve not met. I bid $450 on it the 
first time around. 

I have a feeling the buyer got it with the expectation that he could get it 
running and failed. 
Glad I didn't get it.

Yes, glad that I caught it before cascading failure occurred.  There must
be an over-heat or over-pressure switch that was cutting off the compressor.

[MBZ] OT the value of ready spare parts

Last night at bedtime I noticed that the upstairs HVAC system was not
producing much cold air.  Listening to the flow of coolant from the room
directly below the air-handler in the attic, I could hear some flow begin
and last for a minute or two, but never reach the full gurgling and then
steady hiss that it normally does, and then it would cut out before the
vent temperature dropped more than a couple of degrees.

Went outside with the bottle of R410 and the hose / gauge manifold,
thinking that I had a leak to troubleshoot but maybe a quick top-up would
last the night.  Observed that the cooling fan on the outside unit was not
turning, but the compressor was turning, and lots of heat was coming off
the unit when the compressor was running.  Ah-hah!  A clue!

Swapped out the spare start capacitor, which is for both the fan and the
compressor, and now all is good and cold air flowing again from upstairs
unit.

Time to order a new start capacitor and put that on the shelf for the next
failure.  I think these things only seem to last a few years.
