Re: [MBZ] Finnie Fun!

While not strictly necessary, I find that a POR-15 repair lasts longer if the
rust is completely removed with multiple applications of naval jelly. Over a
period of 1-2 days, the rust can be completely dissolved giving you a nice rust
free, pickled surface which is optimal for POR-15 adhesion.

Re: [MBZ] New Windshield

2019-02-23 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
That's frustrating. This channel was a concern, the aftermarket glass that I
just replaced had a channel that separated from the glass shortly after
installation. Very frustrating, could never get the rubber strip to lay down
and hold.

Rich and I worked pretty hard to remove the windshield intact, I'm very happy
that I was able to reuse it. Not the easiest route, but the end result was
worth it.

To me it is less than "snug."  I looked it up once and remembered the
feel.  That is my "torque wrench" now.  start all bolts  and un un unil
there are just a couple turns left.  Then run in the bolts until they
just start to fell resistance. That is about all there is.   It is
better done with an inch-lb wrench.

you really don't need the Klann for a 123.

2019-02-23 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I don't have the spec but it seems loose.  I think it is about 10 ft
lb.  Maybe 12.   No more than 15 for sure.  As a reference, 25 ft lb is
as tight as you can go with one hand on a ratchet, wit your thumb
wrapped around the head of the ratchet.    Do not tighten to 20 ft lb,
as that WILL bend the pan.

Re: [MBZ] New Windshield

2019-02-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That channel was a major issue for me when I was trying and ultimately gave up
finding a windshield for my 93 400E.

I gave the VIN and all identifying information to the glass company, and they
guy came THREE times with the later windshield that had the bracket. I think it
would have fit, however, I wasn’t taking a chance. I sent him back every time
with the information and we took all the trim off and took pictures of the
existing windshield so he could prove to his people that it didn’t have a
bracket. I even arranged for them to get the correct one from Mercedes, but
they didn’t want to go that route because they couldn’t make as much money
since it wasn’t cheap imported glass that everyone uses these days.

I finally gave up after the third try.

Glad yours worked out.

[MBZ] New Windshield

2019-02-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Follow-up on the installation of a "new" windshield in my '95 E300. Very
happy with the installation. One of the tricky parts on the later 124 cars
is a plastic channel the runs along the bottom edge of the windshield. The
channel accepts the top edge of a rubber gasket, which bridges the gap
between the bottom edge of the glass and the plastic water channels that
drain off water so it doesn't go down into the electronics and such between
the firewall and the bulkhead of the passenger compartment.

I had to find an aftermarket supplier of that channel, as MB does not sell
it separately from a new windshield. I am happy to report that this
channel fits quite nicely.

Re: [MBZ] 129 SL top

2019-02-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Happens all the time. In a lot of cases people think they’re worth big bucks,
but I see them around here on CL in the range you’re seeing.

He’s got a limited market of customers. Insult him while waving the cash in
front of him. These DO NOT sell on eBay for $1000. Challenge him to show you a
completed auction for one at that price. Unless he’s confused his with a
panoramic hard top, which is worth about $2k-$3k, eBay sold/completed auctions
are in the $200-$300 range.

Is it the same color as your car? If not, why bother? And when you look at it,
be sure to check the headliner for condition, the weatherstrip, and the window
seals. All areas where you could beat him down on condition. I’ll bet the
headliner is loose or hanging.

He wants $250 but offer $200 if in OK shape?  Guy sold the car and for
reason kept the top now they are moving and want to get rid of it.
Should I insult him with $150?

I wonder if that thing will fit in the Suburban
