I have most of the parts, but there are some key bits that were sold off, like
the blue flying saucer vacuum control valve. However, now that The White Whale
is too rusty to bring much $ as a whole car, she'll be more valuable as a
donor, so effectively I have more than one car's donor parts.

I had one of those flat fuzzy pad things. It did not work very well and
was a pain to use. IIRC, I went backover the previously painted wall
because it did not control the edge of the new paint and bled over to
where it was not supposed to.

I learned how to cut in with a brush and that's how I have done it for a
long while.

Converting gas to diesel is not trivial. All you wiring will need to be

all wiring from a diesel sedan. At that point you might as well put a 606

If you look back in the archives, I think you will see I suggested the
industrial extra wide roller when you asked about paint sprayers.  They
cover a room way fast!   I never measured the length, but I saw los

to keep up with one guy with a roller.

Amazing.

I’m doing ceilings right now, and with an 18” roller I was able to do
the whole family room ceiling in roughly 20 minutes. That’s a room
that’s about 18’ x 16’ or thereabouts with a 12’ ceiling.

Still have to cut in the edges, which will probably take me as long as
it did to roller the ceiling.

[MBZ] Semi-OT: Coffee bean skins for car parts

2019-12-09 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
BUSINESSFord to make car parts out of McDonald's coffee bean skins

Published: Monday, December 9, 2019
[image: Ian Olson and Debbie Mielewski admire headlamp housing. Photo
credit: Ford Motor Co.]

Ian Olson, senior director of global sustainability at McDonald's, and
Debbie Mielewski, a sustainability research official at Ford Motor Co.,
admire a headlamp housing created using coffee chaff. Ford Motor Co.

Ford Motor Co. is teaming up with McDonald's Corp. to convert a byproduct
of roasted coffee beans into car parts.

Coffee chaff, which is the dried skin of coffee beans, falls off during the
roasting process. Ford will start using some of the millions of pounds of
it that McDonald's produces each year to create car parts such as headlight
housing, the automaker said.

The process involves heating coffee chaff and mixing it with plastic and
other additives to make pellets. Ford will mold those pellets into
lightweight parts to use in car interiors and under the hood.

Ford currently uses a talc material to make the plastic composite. Talc is
an unrenewable mineral, making coffee chaff a more sustainable option.

Swapping talc with coffee chaff will result in 20% more lightweight car
parts and use up to 25% less energy during the molding process, according
to Ford.

"This is an example of jump starting the closed-loop economy, where
different industries work together and exchange materials that otherwise
would be side or waste products," said Debbie Mielewski, Ford's technical
leader of sustainability materials, in a news release.

Ian Olson, McDonald's director of sustainability, said the fast-food
company will supply 76,000 pounds of coffee chaff for the first phase of
the project.

"It's just the tip of the iceberg. The potential is unlimited," Olson said
in a commercial

styled after Jerry Seinfeld's "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee"
television show.

The coffee chaff project is part of Ford's goal to use recycled and
renewable plastics in its vehicles. The company has found a number of ways
to use agricultural byproducts in its supply chain since it started using
soybean-based foam in seats in 2007. It also uses tomato skins for wiring
brackets and bamboo in plastic composite parts.

By 2025, McDonald's aims to use only recycled, renewable and other
responsibly sourced materials in its packaging.

"Totally different industries, coming together to find a more sustainable
solution," Olson said in the commercial. "We've got to do more of this
stuff."

I bought an 880 in 2014 and have been very happy with it. It has the later
rubber rollers (vs brushes), which is relevant if you have a cat, dog,
vietnamese potbellied pig, etc. I have replaced the battery and the rotary
sweeper, but apart from that no other issues.

And no, it is not intended to replace your normal vacuum, but as others pointed
out, it IS intended to replace the drudgery of regular maintenance vacuuming.
You can set it to run on a particular schedule (we do not use that feature). It
will figure out most obstacles, including "cliff detection" for stairs, and
usually comes with "lighthouses" that you can set (with a switch) to act either
as a do-not-pass barrier, or an indicator that the machine has entered another
room.

In response to competitive pressure, the newer models are square, with better
edge-to-edge coverage, and are self-emptying.

The degree only matters for the big firms. They have to feel they are
purchasing cream of the crop. SWMBA’s firm was big fish in the small PDX pond,
but really wanted Ivy League talent. Those folks tended to either have been
locals and would stay put, or left in a few years. Turned out the most loyal
shysters were local. They also tended to be less brusque with clients and
colleagues.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Roomba

2019-12-09 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
We had/have one. It was the pet hair edition, because that was supposed to be
the top of the line at the time. Pretty simple to operate once it was charged
up. Let it loose and over time it would map the space and become much more
reliable at removing dirt. When it died, #2 boy adopted it and is keeping it
imprisoned here in SEA.

The lesser aspects of the unit. It needs either low furniture, or higher legs
to drive under, or it gets trapped. There were a pair of navigational
restraints (RF transmitters) so you could “block” an area from activity. Say a
set of stairs or other room. Those kind of worked. The suction is not Hoover
good, but fine for constant patrolling with the whiskers doing a good job of
sweeping debris. Capacity of the tank is minimal, so you do need to empty it
after each sweep. Sometimes the robot could not mount itself into the charging
station. And, the thing that got it retired, was that the battery was more
than the thing was worth for the quality of the job done. I think it worked
out for almost two years of occasional usage patrolling 900 sqft (the main
floor of the house).

I see many retired units at the thrift store. Probably all with dead battery
that nobody wanted to pay over $100 for.

We have a eufy and we love that thing. All wood floors with some rugs. Sure
it chokes on legos and other random objects but after it runs it is always
full of dirt and lint that would otherwise still be in the floor somewhere.
200 bucks on Amazon. Runs every day at 9am. No gimmicks, apps, programs or
laser beams. Sure it gets stuck under the couch and rarely finds it's way
home but when you see it sitting somewhere you just put it on the charger
again and it vacuums while u are at work. What it lacks in hp it makes up
for in time spent doing the job - its tolerance for vacuuming is far
greater than any human. To some extent the best vacuum is the one that gets
used and there is no way I am vacuuming every day of the week for an hour
or paying anyone to do that. Total weekly cfm is in favor of the robot.

2019-12-09 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes

We bought one years ago, clone of some type. Useless. Bin is small, work
quality is terrible, and usually it would fail to park on the charger so the
battery world die and the programming would fail, so in order to get it going
again was a pain. Someone else already said you've got to keep the floors
clear, that doesn't happen magically, and once the floors are clear, I can
vacuum a room in minutes and achieve a far higher quality of work.

The basic issue is physics. A small slow moving battery operated machine simply
doesn't have the power of a corded vacuum, doesn't have the sensors (eyes and
ears) to determine if the job is done right, and cannot overcome simple
obstacles (Jimmy put your toys away now or I'm putting them out on the street
curb for the kids in the neighborhood!).

They are a curiosity, not a real tool.

If you can get a free in-home trial period, probably will only take a few days
or a week to see if the machine is right or not.

2019-12-09 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
Like Peter said about stuff on the floor. Got one as a present recently and
works great on vinyl floors. Has several faults, however, such as its bin which
is too small. Came with 3 "beam" devices battery operated that will confine it
to a specific area. It can be programmed via an app on Iphones, so it appeals
to some technical minded people. Son and his wife love them but I just grab up
a broom and then a bucket and mop. "Hands on" people might not like them. It's
fiddly and travels slow. Son asked me to fix his early model. The battery was
dying and it cost almost as much as a new Roomba. Current models may be better
in that respect. Housewifes, who have spent hours pushing a Hoover, might love
them because they can sit and watch it do their former job.

My impression, not having had one is that they are mostly a gimmick.  It
appears they take as much attention as what it would take to dust or
vacuum the floor anyway.   I believe that is why so many are donated.
However there is a new one that is supposed to go back "home" and empty
itself.  That MAY change the equation (or not).

We had one, it seemed to work well enough on wood floors. It would
occasionally jam itself under the couches and disappear as it just fit
under. The little bin on them is not very big so it needs to be
emptied often.

like visiting a totally different country each time in most cases.

When I was a youngster my folks participated in “CAT” tours with their flying
buddies. These were groups of aircraft owners who would fly together as a group
to various locations. I’ve Island hopped from Hispañola all the way down to the
ABCs (Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao) in a Beechcraft V35.

We typically spent a day or two on each island, sometimes more, before moving
on to the next. Loads of fun and an awesome experience.
