I am not looking for perfect, but something in somewhat decent cosmetic
shape.  What do you have, what are you looking for to trade?  Never know
what I might have laying around okie acres.

Re: [MBZ] Cafe au lait oil?

2020-04-28 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Yes, if you have a blown head gasket, you will see bubbles... as engine
warms up, gasket leak will leak more, which will induce compression gasses
into the cooling system...
Depending on how bad the gasket or corrosion pinhole problem is, you will
see bubbles.. or if it's worse, at high idle or middle speed, the intruding
gas will "burp" the coolant out of the overflow tank.
If you have a car with a radiator cap, at the top radiator tank, remove the
cap and watch what happens to coolant as you run the engine.. speed up
engine... coolant surge, with gas intrusion... sure sign you have
combustion gas inserting into coolant system.

Tear down will tell you where, unless your exray vision glasses are
handy... ;))

Re: [MBZ] Cafe au lait oil?

2020-04-28 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
If you want an engine to last, be sure to get the oil up to operating
temperature every time the engine is started, and keep it there for 20 to
30 minutes. This evaporates the moisture in the oil that forms as a result
of the combustion process every time the engine is started.

It’s easy to make a case on a non-operable car. Just start going down the list
of all the things you *can’t* check out and it gets ugly real quick. If the
person is unwilling to accept this, make your best offer, walk away, and know
that there will be others.

2020-04-28 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
CHANGE THE OIL IMMEDIATELY< AND FILTER.
Oil with water is the kiss of death to bearing surface... DO NOT run engine
till it has clean oil.

Then, run engine and watch for bubbles in radiator tank.. if head gasket is
leaking, engine compression overpowers coolant pressure and compression gas
will bubble up...
If gasket is really leaking, the coolant will surge up the filler neck each
time you rev up the engine...
If it's a little seep leak, you will get bubbles...
If you have bubbles or surge... head gasket replacement...

Yep, I have been watching that thread over there.

I’m working with a guy that was on PeachParts who is trying to sell his father
in law’s 1984 380SL. FIL no longer drives and they need some $$ towards his
care. FIL is convinced his 35+ year old car, the red headed stepchild of the
model line, with over 160k on the clock and numerous minor issues, is worth BIG
BUCKS. Why? Because a few years back he saw a Mecum or other high line auction
with a car “just like his” that went for big bucks.

FIL wants to list the car for $9k. Son in law says $6k, knowing it’s a $3k-$4k
car on a very good day. FIL has agreed to list at $6k after protracted begging
from son in law. I told the son in law to get FIL to agree to lower the price
$1000/month for every month it’s listed somewhere. That and keep track of every
offer, no matter how lousy it is, so he can compile a list of offers and show
FIL what the market says it’s worth.

This will be a long, drawn out, painful process, and we all know where it will
end. This is what happens when emotion comes into a transaction.

love with the car which adds to it in his mind. He also talked about a
grandson who told him recently he would like to come over and help him get it
running. There is that factor to. As I mentioned before he seems to have a
$7500-$12k figure in his mind for what nice ones go for.

Not to sound pedantic, but sometimes people just don’t get it unless you lay it
out for them. It also validates your rationale for the price you offer, so they
don’t immediately go into “lowball” mode or think you’re trying to rip them
off. It also puts them in a position where you can suggest (nicely) that if
they took a little time to get it cleaned up and running you might be
interested at a higher price.

More than once I’ve done this and walked away, only to get a call back a few
days later with a decent counter or notification that the car has been cleaned
up and is now running.

It could be a BAT candidate if it was cleaned up and had a few things
done to it.  I figure a $4-5k real world value but on BAT, no telling
what would happen.  After all didn't you sell a 4 door there with no
working AC for crazy money?

On 4/28/2020 5:44 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote:

I doubt it’s a BaT candidate based on what you described. If that’s the case
and it was running and in good condition, $5k might not be an unrealistic

Re: [MBZ] 85 300CD

2020-04-28 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I do not think I spelled it out quite as nicely as you, I did explain I
see them advertised anywhere from $1k on up to $7-8k but not sure if
they are selling for that.  I just told him I was willing to pay $2k as
it sits at that very moment.  He then started to talk about if he wanted
to just sell it for that, or if he wanted to spend money on it and get
it going.  I think he is in love with the car which adds to it in his
mind.  He also talked about a grandson who told him recently he would
like to come over and help him get it running.  There is that factor
to.  As I mentioned before he seems to have a $7500-$12k figure in his
mind for what nice ones go for.

don’t immediately go into “lowball” mode or think you’re trying to rip them
off. It also puts them in a position where you can suggest (nicely) that if
they took a little time to get it cleaned up and running you might be
interested at a higher price.

More than once I’ve done this and walked away, only to get a call back a few

up and is now running.

I doubt it’s a BaT candidate based on what you described. If that’s the case
and it was running and in good condition, $5k might not be an unrealistic
price. Mileage is a big hit no matter what.

I am sure I could have thrown a battery in it and I bet it would start
right up.  Knowing the guy (who is Jewish BTW which may factor in, sorry
if I offended any of our Jewish friends) I figure it probably runs
good.  I was make the offer as is trying to make it seem like it will
take a lot more to get it running that what I am betting it needs.  On
the other hand, it may have zero compression and not run at all, or
maybe the tank is full of algae.

That is why I thought a $2k offer as it sits was more than fair. If he
wants to get full value for it, or even what he considers full value, he
should get it running.   I do have 2 240D's but I would really like to
get a turbo, its been many years since I have had one.  Will end up
selling at least 1 of my 240Ds.

There was a 1 foot square puddle of coolant on the ground. The hose that goes
to coolant reservoir from radiator is at top of coolant reservoir and way above
high water mark so I don’t think it would create bubbles.

Get it up to temperature and have someone rev the throttle while you look in
the coolant reservoir for bubbles.

What’s a “good amount” of coolant? Not being snarky, just trying to get an idea
of how much was coming out and how fast.

Sadly, it's more likely a head gasket if you have coolant loss.

I really hate dealing with the 90s vintage mirrors, the ones that are
adjustable and held in place with the spring wire. Some can be replaced in a
matter of seconds, while the next one takes you 30 minutes.

I had to R the passenger side mirror on the ML500 as a buddy got me the LED
turn signal piece that goes in the mirror housing from a knacker. The mirror
came out easily enough, and amazingly went right back in. The last one I did I
had to fiddle with for a good 10 minutes.

[MBZ] Yay me 2!!!

2020-04-28 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I pulled a washer pump and tank grommet from a 210 at the knacker Saturday. I
have not had squirters in the $600E320 since I got it and spent a huge amount
of time screwing around with the squirters Which I thought were all plugged up
New are like $55.

I put in the grommet, put in the pump, filled the tank and hit the squirt
button and JOY I have squirts now.

A $0.50 grommet... $5shipping... I need to remember to order some the next time
I get some bits.

I feel pretty stupid though...

Re: [MBZ] Pics of the 280E and issues

2020-04-28 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

This outfit has good prices.  https://www.mercedespartshub.com/

Their vehicle selector only goes back to 1984 but they have these parts
for a good price.  I'm not sure what outfit this is, dealer maybe.  I
sent them a message asking about the various connectors and vac line so
will wait to hear back.  The lines seem to be separate parts but I'm
sure generic lines will be fine. That diagram you linked was helpful, I
will fire up the winders computer and open up the EPC I have and dig
through it for more detail

Looks like someone savaged the vacuum lines. A couple of the vacuum/temperature
switches are obviously toast, but can be replaced easily. In #30 there’s some
sort of a vacuum/electrical device I can’t identify, but it’s clearly
disconnected but may be functional.

What I’ve found on a lot of cars like this one is that the vacuum system gets
boogered up and some dim bulb decides they can just yank everything and make it
work right. Which of course ends poorly. The best approach I have found is to
get some bulk (hard) vacuum line and some hose and replace everything in the
system. It’s cheap yet time consuming, but if you do’t get this sorted out of
the gate you’ll never be able to get things working properly.

Hard vacuum line is cheap as wine on ILW, I think I bought 10 meters of the
stuff a few years ago for $15, which is almost a lifetime supply for most
people. I also have a box of the rubber vacuum fittings of various types along
with a few meters of the bulk hose to make up connections.

I don’t recall seeing a lot of black cars in the day, so that probably makes it
a bit rare. The interior looks pretty good, and the exterior has the usual
cruft that all these cars suffer from, unfortunately. Being black they’re not
that noticeable, however.

If I was prioritizing things on this, I would get the belt installed and then
get a vacuum diagram and get all of the vacuum stuff sorted. At least at that
point you’ve got a foundation to work from, which you’ll need if you have to
mess with the FI at all.

Per Jaime's comment yesterday, I checked under the intake manifold and found a
vac line falling off, the connector is rotted, so that will be something to go
through. Probably others too, I'll need to buy a bunch of that stuff I guess.
Also you can see in pic 30 this vac thing that has nothing attached to it and I
can't tell where it is supposed to be bolted down, will need to figure out
whussup wif dat. Looks like I need to dig into the 123 workshop manual and get
all the engine diagrams and such.

Also in pic26 there are those fittings on the pass side of the block that have
nothing attached to them, and you can sorta see where stuff was oozing from
what I guess is the head gasket leaking in there.

Newish AC compressor, alternator (with munched belt in there), PS pump it looks
like. Exhaust muffler, pipes, resonator all new, looked like new boots on the
rear axles outboard but the axles did not look newish. Tires pretty new. I
don't know if the AC works or not, will have to put the gauges on it and see if
has pressure or will hold a vac.

For $1300 I guess I can't complain, it runs and looks decent from 20ft. I'll
sort out a few issues and see what the DMV are up to these days, get some
plates and drive it a bit.

Oh, and it has a solid roof!

[MBZ] 1995 E420

2020-04-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The $1500 1995 E420 arrived yesterday morning from Columbus OH about 9:30. No

I forgot how much fun these cars are. Really. The W124 has that “bank vault”

Nearly new (snow) tires on the car, spare set of wheels with old Michelins
Suspension rubber appears to be tight
No road or drivetrain noises
Inside of valve covers are CLEAN

The bad, or not so bad:

Paint on roof is toast. Clear coat is a crackle finish. Good part is that this

up. I ordered a new lock cylinder, too, as the keys I have are both pretty
worn. Might as well replace the lock cylinder and get a new key out of the deal
since I would order a new key anyway.

I’ll drive it with the snow tires as they’re literally new. No need to drop
serious coin for new skins when these will do the job, they’ll just wear out
quicker. I got a new front bumper cover for under $150 shipped, so I’ll need to
rattle can that along with the bumper strip, since it’s still black (should be
bumper color on this model year).

It may take some time to get the paperwork sorted since I’ve got to do
everything with the tax collector (they do all the DMV stuff in FL) through the
mail. I could swap a valid plate from one of my other cars and drive it without
an issue, I’m sure, but it would be nice to be legal.

More fun as it takes place! First parts order is probably due on Thursday, so
that’s when the fun really starts!

[MBZ] Could be OnT -- License plate frames

2020-04-28 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I saw this guy will make custom license plate frames, whatever you might
want.

https://www.ebay.com/sch/creativeplateframes/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=

I ordered this and he made it up for me
https://www.ebay.com/itm/264712631590  I think I'm going to put it on
the SL600

It could be kinda fun to make up various Benz plates.  He prints up the
text/graphic stuff on vinyl then inserts it into the plate so it can be
very custom.

Nice guy, very responsive and $11 is not a bad price for a hack

Re: [MBZ] Another Project?

2020-04-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yes, yesterday morning about 9:30 am. Not bad considering I bought it from the
guy in Columbus, OH on Friday afternoon.

I’ll post some details later today.

Nope. Got my project, the E420. And it’s a pretty simple one, thank goodness.
The car is so clean and well maintained that I’ve had little to nothing to come
up with to do on it. It does need some repairs, like a brake booster and a idle
position switch (on the accelerator linkage for ASR) but otherwise it’s pretty
tight.

Re: [MBZ] Floyd Needs This

2020-04-28 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I wonder if I know this guy, or know of him.  I vaguely recall seeing
this car around somewhere, sometime.

The kid a coupla doors down from us when I was maybe 12 or so had one, a
total turd he bought for a coupla $hundred if I recall. Rusty, beat up,
no top, seats almost non-existent, 4 mismatched bald tires, but it would
more or less run.  Rode in it a coupla times, it was lots of fun, about
the size of a go-kart.  I could fit in it when I was 12. mostly.  One
day I was riding my bike by it and I see the magic smoke billowing out
from under the hood (bonnet).  I run up to the house and pound on the
door, tell him his car is on fire, he comes running out and pops open
the hood and starts pulling wires out.  Some wires shorted out or
something, and insulation was burning off.  Total rats nest of bodged-up
wiring.  He spent the next coupla days rewiring it with whatever random
wire he could find to get it to run and then I think he sold it right
away and got something else.  I think these things are kinda fun but
were pretty much turds at birth.
