Re: [MBZ] Actually worked on a Benz today

2020-11-29 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
I don't think "toasty" is in the cards for an '04 Golf TDI, they are well known
for lack of winter heat. Almost as bad as a Geo Metro in Canada, a buddy of
mine had one and the temp gauge would slowly drift down on the highway in the
winter.

Driving if 4th may help, but that tends to kill the milage, and if I'm only
gonna get 40 mpg I might was well drive the 300D and get 30 AND heat.

Nice! I need to get off my rear end and fix the no-start problem on my '95
wagon.

Warm air quickly: I plug in the block heater on a timer, so it starts heating
the coolant at least 30 minutes before I start driving.  Nice toasty air within
a few minutes if not instantly.

Yeah the suspension is shot but would need to diagnose To figure out what part
of the system is bad Might be worth $500 if it is otherwise ok. Shocks would
run about $1200.

Re: [MBZ] Actually worked on a Benz today

2020-11-29 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Mostly short trips in the Golf? Angie's '03 makes plenty of heat but not for
the first couple miles. My '15 makes excellent heat and pretty quick but I
think its got the extra injector running to heat the engine up faster. Fuel
economy suffers in the winter, even worse than you'd otherwise expect.

My '98 had good heat but took a long time to get there, like 5-6 miles of
driving before even a whiff of heat would come out. It took a good half hour
before that engine was all the way warmed up and pumping out heat. Fortunately
the cabin was pretty small so it warmed up pretty quick.

Popped it in, charged the battery (with Mom getting more and more frail I've

Most important it doesn't fall on it's face as soon as it warms up now.  Ran
out of time to finish the job, was about to get the volt meter out and set the
mixture when my brother called to help him install a new alternator in his
wife's car.  Hae had carpal tunnel surgery a week and a half ago and isn't

Not bad, although the bolts won't slide out of the bushings, they have to be
screwed out.  At least that 2005 240 has a spring tensioner, not the self
destructing one in the TE.

A good day -- I prefer to drive the Benz in the winter, the Golf almost never

I've been good, Christmas is near, in case anyone has a spare $12,000 ,
there will be room under the tree..
Ammo is cheap... each 50 cal round is only $8.00 now, if you can get it. So
a day at the range could only cost you a few hundred for ammo.

My Handler 210 MVP runs on either 120 or 220, but I've never plugged it
into the 220. The heaviest that I've welded is 1/8" and it's done a good
job.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Generator

2020-11-29 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The one I had was purely mechanical injection, Shutdown was a manual lever
that was mounted on the injection pump.
It had an electric starter AND a pull starter, it also had a compression
release so you could pull it through with the pull starter. Very primitive
design... third world stuff. nothing fancy..

The no start , no run issue was, I believe, due to failure of the injection
pump in some way. I could get light off using "death in a spray can" but it
would not sustain running, which told me no fuel at injector.
I wrote it off and gave it away... it sucked several hours of my life and
gave nothing back.. I moved on.

But, the engine is probably purely mechanical, with an electric kill mechanism.
Probably well worth getting it to mess with, if you like that sort of challenge.
I have something similar, in a quiet cabinet, the engine works great.  The

For those of us with no 220v access a 110v welder can do an adequate job. My

kicking horse stick welder in 110v that is great for thicker stuff.
