[MBZ] 2011 Mercedes Benz C300: Code P0410 - Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction

2021-12-10 Thread Robert Koziak via Mercedes
Hi all,
      My daughter's 2011 C300 (90K)  had a check engine light with a code P0410
indicating an issue with the secondary air pump.  I replaced the secondary pump
(which was evidently seized) and reset the code.  Drove it about 50 miles with
no check engine light so I returned the car and started a vacation about 4
hours away.
She drove the car and a few hours ago and the check engine light came back
with the same code.  Should I have replaced the relay and fuse too?  The fuse
looked fine when I checked it before the repair.
Does anyone have a schematic of the engine fuse box which lists the fuse
and relay locations?  I can't seem to locate a good one online.  I have the
fuse and relay so I could have her replace them and reset the code to see if
that fixes the problem before I return in a week.
The secondary air pump was replaced 6 years and 60K ago by the dealer under
warranty. Is this a common problem?
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

I completed an engine swap on a 2002 BMW 525i that I had bought in an
auction, replacement was sold as a running engine out of a 325 series car. I
guess, I got most everything done right. Have been driving it for at least 5
years now. No issues with the replacement engine. Previous engine had
coolant leak into the oil and the car sat for about 6 months, cam was badly
rusted on top.

Needs a new engine, would be lots of work to sort out what's in there,
and worse since you don't know what happened to it. Be easier to just
drop in a replacement if you could find one from a knacker. Price is
too high though for a car with a bad engine.

Service manual is available here:
https://handbook.w116.org

Trans fluid change should be about the same procedure as the 300D 2.5, just
easier to work on the W116 since things aren't so tight. Use Febi 08971
ATF. Same for the power steering.

Good luck!

The old Metro was pretty unrefined but a fun drive. A friend had a convertible
with the 3cyl. As they say its more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast
car slow. I definitely would prefer a Cruze in an accident.
Just for giggles I plugged a '19 Cruze, '21 Spark and '98 Metro into fuel
economy.gov
Cruze 28/38 32
Spark 29/38 33
Metro 36/44 40

The Spark disappoints me. For a little crap box I'd have thought it would do
better. It's really range limited to, they list it as 297 miles on a tank.

30 years ago a 1600lb Metro got 50+ mpg at 55mph.
Now a 2900lb Cruze gets 50+mpg at 55mph, but a lot worse than the Metro
around town.

It would be interesting to put a 50hp GDI engine in the Metro and see
what mpg it gets with the same performance as before.
I kind of want to make a mid engine car out of an old Sprint/Swift/Metro
and a Cruze/Civic drivetrain. Keep it under 2000lb and it'll run circles
around an old R5 Turbo.

Needs a new engine, would be lots of work to sort out what's in there,
and worse since you don't know what happened to it.  Be easier to just
drop in a replacement if you could find one from a knacker.  Price is
too high though for a car with a bad engine.

 Sure is pretty Craig.
IIRC the rule of thumb for power steering is that if it's got V belts it uses
ATF and a serpentine belt wants the other stuff. ATF seemed to kill the seals

I think the 116 is one of the best looking models, certainly nothing since it

I think I can handle engine oil and filter, power steering filter, and

What should I use for power steering fluid? I vaguely recall using ATF in

Since this is our first W116, I have questions to ask, but I will leave

Re: [MBZ] $900E500 Airmatic craziness, update

2021-12-10 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I fooled around with the car a bit this afternoon.  Pulled the RR inner
fender liner and found the connector for the sensors, took those apart
and cleaned them and sprayed cleaner then swabbed them out.  It was
actually fairly clean around the block although a bit dirty.  I hosed it
all down under the liner, there was a lot of dirt in there.  The liner
was kinda chewed up so not sure if that is just wear and tear or
someone(s) has been in there before.  I took the heat gun and dried
everything out in the connector just to make sure it was all clean,
looked good and was dry.

There is another connector back around the diff that seems to connect to
both sides, it is in a stupid place where it can get a lot of water and
crap.  It was not particularly dirty but when I took it apart water ran
out of the wires and connector.  h not good.  So I sprayed that with
cleaner, swabbed it with alcohol and hit it with the heat and it got dry
so that was good.  I will wrap it with something when I'm all done.

Started the car up and cleared codes, it ran for awhile with no codes
showing but the air pump would not come on.  The car is jacked up so
maybe it needs to be down for that to happen.  I jumpered the relay
again and the pump worked so it is not turning on.  It pumped up and did
hold pressure in the system fairly well so does not seem to be much
leakage.  While I have the car up and tires off I should test the
connection with some soapy water to make sure there are no leaks

After awhile I got the RR code again, solenoids open circuit, so I guess
it was not the connectors.  Maybe the bag is bad inside where these
solenoids are.  It also threw a code for the relay then, maybe that was
due to me fooling around with it.  New relays coming tomorrow so can
swap one out.  I will also get the fender liners and tires back on and
drop it on the ground and see what happens.  With it on the ground I
will put the Majick Computer on it and see what I can make it do.

Given the car was OK before with the same RR solenoid codes it is kind
of a puzzlement as to why it was slammed after doing the tranny.

More to come...

When you find one with seat heaters, you might want to find out what if
anything was done about them in the class action suit. I forget what the
choices were, but in typical procrastinator fashion I ended up with the
default, which I believe was a short term warranty extension so they'd
rewire the seats after my ML caught fire.

Now a 2900lb Cruze gets 50+mpg at 55mph, but a lot worse than the Metro

It would be interesting to put a 50hp GDI engine in the Metro and see

I kind of want to make a mid engine car out of an old Sprint/Swift/Metro

I don't recall it being a big deal on my 1979 300SD.

Had a bit of trouble finding the right filter, as the "neck" on the first one I
got was not tall enough. Or maybe it was too tall I can't recall it was a
few years ago.

I have it, but it's... Big. 1.1GB. IIRC tranny fluid/filter is simple.
Drain/drop pan, replace filter. Remove drain plug on TC. Put
everything back, pour in half the new fluid, start, and pour in
the remainder.

I have no use for them. Give me a sedan, convertible, or truck as needed.
We actually do need AWD where we live. I really don't like the bat-out-of-hell
on the ragged edge of control 50mph run up the icy hill to try to get home in
a 2wd vehicle, with no guarantee of success, even when taking half a dozen
runs at it. (And the hammerhead turn at the top after a failed attempt is quite
pucker-inducing, too.) Going to have to go with the immortal words of Murtaugh
on that one... and my wife was _always_ too old.

I made it up almost every time, but there were a few walk-homes necessary.
(Killed a dog too, once, when it chose to saunter down the very middle of the
road on one of my successive rampages up the hill. That sucked.)

The X5, or the AWD E320, with a set of studded Hakkas on it turns going
home into a non-event. Same tires as before, just with 4wd.

The older Dodge truck 488ci 8.0l V10 is 300/450 on regular gas. It's torque
that makes a truck
a truck, and not a haul-ass grocery getter.

My rating system for vehicle power plants:

Enough power for the job
Reliability/longevity
Simplicity

The Dodge truck engines I have (6BTA, V10) both rate pretty well.

My thoughts, exactly. Keep in mind it's torque that makes cars pleasantly
drivable, so optimize for that rather than HP. My 200D had only what, 55HP?
But it had a fair amount of torque, and so drove rather nicely around town.
It was only on the freeway that the lack of HP became noticeable.

You'd think. The sheep mindlessly want more power and big vehicles. Big
vehicles make more money for the carmaker. If you think about it what you're
really buying in a more expensive, larger vehicle, is air.
Look at the new hybrids, they're not sedans, they're mostly SUVs or crossovers.
Then they say "Look at the great mileage you're getting!" which is 25mpg
instead of 50mpg in a sedan.
We live in a world of lifestyle creep. Everybody "needs" an SUV or crossover.
Everybody "needs" AWD. Everybody "needs" a big house etc, etc, ad nauseum.

Looks like that is true: https://www.cartechbooks.com/blogs/techtips/battery
Different quality standards go into some of them but they're a commodity...
I used to really like CarQuest batteries, not sure what to get now that they're
gone.

Don't need those much in Flagstaff or Tampa.

I was thinking about the prospect of bringing a *rust free* vehicle
North. As a resident of Michigan, surely you can appreciate that.

When you find one with seat heaters, you might want to find out what if
anything was done about them in the class action suit. I forget what the
choices were, but in typical procrastinator fashion I ended up with the
default, which I believe was a short term warranty extension so they'd
rewire the seats after my ML caught fire.

2021-12-10 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Realistically a modern 350 can easily make more hp/torque than a '50s vintage
slow turning big Cadillac engine while using way less fuel and requiring way
less maintenance.
The 345ci 5.7l Hemi in my 2010 Dodge RAM made 390hp 407#ft from the factory. The
Cadillac 500 was only rated for 400hp and 500#ft in 1970 and of course it went
down after the emissions restrictions of the mid-'70s.
Interestingly the Caddy only weighs about 50# more...
The Ford 3.5l v6 ecoboost in the Raptor F150 is rated at 450/510 and comes in
at 100# less (about 20%!). In the Ford GT the same engine is turned up to
660/550 although it spins faster to make that extra power.
The technology in modern engines is amazing and a lot of it is available to
home gamers. Check out the Independence build on Vice Grip Garage, he's got
Holley's aftermarket EFI on a big block Chevy with a supercharger...
