Banks making loans to people who don't qualify on any standard debt/income
ratios -- where have I seen this movie before?

With Carvana about to go over the cliff and CarMax probably not far behind,
there will be a lot of used cars being liquidated into the market. If you need
a new car but can wait, I would.

That recall has been going on for about 5 years now. I first called about
replacing my Kidde (pronounced as German, kid-uh) extinguishers on
04 Nov 2017.

When I called I was surprised that the extinguisher from my Kenworth was
also one of those recalled! I checked after the telephone call and found
it has metal handles ...

When I called back the next day, the fellow with whom I spoke said the
extinguisher from the KW was not involved. He did, however, re-submit one
of the extinguishers I had reported the previous day.

Anyway, I got new extinguishers.

Re: [MBZ] Halgon Fire System in the Car!

2022-12-19 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Yes, it also does not damage electronics so it was frequently used in data
centers. We had big signs posted warning "evacuate room immediately if halon
alarm sounds" and you had maybe 10 seconds or so to get out.

Halon is a greenhouse gas or ozone depleting gas (can't recall which -- maybe
both) so its use is greatly reduced from decades ago.

Re: [MBZ] Has anyone ever

2022-12-19 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I returned a blower fan control module that I bought for my Volvo. It died less
than a year after being installed. A/k/a "resistor pack" but it's a bit more
sophisticated than that on that car. They replaced it no hassles.

I'm sure a few people do return used filters, wiper blades, etc. but to me it
would not be worth the hassle of completing the return form, packing, and
shipping them. Guessing they've already run the numbers on their pricing with
their actual returns experience factored in.

Yep. Especially when lenders come after what they are owed from the previous
car. Mitch is way more familiar with this, but charged off debt is counted as
income. The IRS just hired a whole lot of new agents.

Repo's, garnishments, charged off debt, bankruptcies.

This is going to be very, very ugly.

Re: [MBZ] Have you ever started a new job while overlapping your old job then got a bad feeling about the new job?

2022-12-19 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
In my case, we have had some major product issues lately which is
basically old slow servers that needed to be upgraded a long time ago.
Supposedly they are spending $2m on upgrades.  I am not sure if this is
a lot of money for this stuff or not. This had been leading to daily
outages of our software which of course dealers do not like, costs them
money.  These folks came along in the middle of all this happening and I
am just burned out on dealing with the current situation the change
sounded good.  I think once the new wore off with having to travel the
country on a pretty well fixed schedule, it might start sucking.  Now, I
just travel regionally and schedule my trips how I want.  If I have
something going on, I can schedule around it.  If I want to go pick up a
car in an area I travel to, I can work it into a company trip.  In the
afternoons when I am home, if I want to go piddle around out in the shop
for a while, I can.  There is actually quite a bit of flexibility
currently, even if I do sometimes have heavy travel.  I wish I had a
crystal ball to see if current company will collapse with our current
issues, employees leaving etc.  I really hate to fully transition then
regret it.  We are currently under a hiring freeze as well until March
from what I am told.  We have had plenty of people leave and come back,
but I would hate to leave, hate it, then if I wanted to come back cant
for 3 or more months.

went to work for a customer of my Dad’s that had a big scissor lift rental
business.

I had been offered a job by the company that took over our assets from the
receivership, but was so burned out on the business from going through the
receivership I wanted nothing to do with it, or so I thought.

First day at work at the new job I spent beating sleeve bearings out of the
joints on scissor lift arms. I mean All. Day. Long. Nope!

That night I called the GM at the company that took over our assets (he was a
former employee of my former company, too, that had gone to work for the new
guys) and told him I had made a terrible mistake. He even renegotiated the
original deal they had offered me and I got a service truck to drive home at
night and more money than they had originally offered me. I never regretted
that decision.

gloom. They said it used to be 80% but now it’s more like 60%. I am currently

This week I’m not traveling with either job so just doing training with new job

guy who has been there 4 months doing some training. I asked the guy how many
weeks a month he is on the road and he says 4 months, they are on the road 48
weeks a month, I was expecting 2-3 a month. This sends up my red flags. I do
not want to be on the road 48 weeks a month. I call the boss at the new job,
he claims this guy just came on when they were really busy but there was a
couple of months this year where their guys did not travel at all because it
was slow. This is also somewhat concerning. He said if there was a week I
needed to be at home they could make it happen. If they did in fact mislead me
during the interview process as to the level of travel, then their answer to my
questions now also can’t be believed.

So, I guess that’s the question, anybody starter a new job and then immediately
start getting a bad feeling about it, or am I just being a wuss.

receivership I wanted nothing to do with it, or so I thought.

2022-12-19 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
Hmm. Perhaps travel will be less of an issue after the first of the year. From
what I have been reading the auto market is about to collapse. It is very hard
to justify an $750-$800 a month car payment when one can hardly afford the
heating and grocery bills. I know folks car shop after tax season, but
withholding rules changed, and folks that are expecting a large tax return are
probably in for an unpleasant surprise. I don't see a happy ending here.

You probably have a better feel for the dealer's situations than I do.
Hopefully, I am wrong.

And yeah, you were probably lied to.

This week I’m not traveling with either job so just doing training with new job
while working old job at the same time. Today they had me with the next newest
guy who has been there 4 months doing some training. I asked the guy how many
weeks a month he is on the road and he says 4 months, they are on the road 48
weeks a month, I was expecting 2-3 a month. This sends up my red flags. I do
not want to be on the road 48 weeks a month. I call the boss at the new job,

Re: [MBZ] Halgon Fire System in the Car!

2022-12-19 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Yes, Halon systems were very common in raised floor computer rooms. They also
have alarms and and all sorts of warning that light up and make noise before
they discharge, so any humans in the area can get out. As Grant described,
Halon displaces oxygen, so you wouldn’t want to be in an enclosed space where
Halon is being discharged or you will suffocate.

The current standard in computer rooms and other such equipment spaces where
conventional sprinklers can’t be used are halocarbons which have a trade name
of “Halotron I” and another vendor’s similar product, “FE-36” or “CleanGuard”.
3M has a similar product that’s brand labeled by them, I don’t recall the name.

These are all referred to in the industry as “clean” agents as opposed to
chemical agents, which might be foam or powder. Argon and nitrogen are also
used, but I think they’re for specific types of applications.

We refurbished a raised floor computer room when I worked for the school
district, and these were the choices for our extinguishing system retrofit.
They’re interchangeable with Halon so we were able to repurpose nearly all of
the system hardware in the process.

[MBZ] More CL600 fun

2022-12-19 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I sucked the overfilled oil out of the car and managed to get too much
out, so had to get another jug of old Quaker State I had and pour in
another quart or two to get the level up to where it should be.  But I
have a coupla gallons of good chain saw bar/chain oil I guess.

I started the car up this afternoon to warm up the oil to suck some out,
cold start, and it wasn't smoking that much though some, definitely not
as bad as yesterday.  I thought maybe that the lower oil level had
something to do with that.  The exhaust did smell pretty bad though,
rich gas smell and burned sort of stuff.  I was wondering if this was
the catalysts getting overwhelmed by raw fuel or oil or something.

After I got the oil sorted and vacuumed and washed the car (it looks
really good!) I decided to take it for a little shakedown ride on the
road.  I pulled out of my driveway and it would not accelerate much and
started blowing smoke really bad.  UHOH. I just went a 1/4mi or so and
came back home.

The more I think about it maybe this is due to the bad cam position
sensor, which apparently tells the ECU when to fire, etc. like a crank
position sensor and if it is not working all manner of Bad Things can
happen.  I found a code for it when I first looked at the car and
scanned it.  So now I'm thinking maybe the smoke is from the bad cam
sensor causing the ECU to dump fuel or timing is off or something.  I
ordered a new sensor last night, $50 or so, was shipped out today, who
knows when it will get here with all the Christmas busyness.  So will
see if that solves the issue.  If I have some time I might put the
scanner or the DAS on it and see if I can see any issues in real time
with the car running, might be instructive if I can figure anything out
from the real-time data.

So waiting on that to see what is going on.  I do not see oil blowing
out of the engine though, looks like a bit maybe at the bell housing
which might be a rear main seal or something, but it isn't too bad.  The
pass door soft close works! but the driver door is hissing.  The
multicontour seats seemed like they were trying to do something, the bum
warmer worked though.  Some other little details to sort out, I need to
get another instrument cluster in there and see if there is some way to
reprogram the miles. That is some sort of theft-related/rollback issue
and without the old one to clone to the new one it might not be
possible.  I'll see how that might work.

The thermostatic idle air valve on our 450SL needed re-adjustment with a hammer.
The plug in the body had started working out, meaning it no longer was all that
thermostatic.
You could adjust it for cold-start. Or warm running. But not both. After the
'hammer cure',
it worked properly again.

IIRC when 'bad' it looked stepped on top, because the body plug, which should
have
been flush with the housing, protruded a bit. I think I used a socket to fit
over the middle
part, and a hammer to drive the socket in (gently!) until the outer part of the
plug was flush
with the body.

[MBZ] 3 on the tree? 4.5 -- 1972 mercedes V8 280 Sel,$2,000

2022-12-19 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Doesn't actually look too awful but $2k might be a bit much.

Yes it's available. Selling as parts car still on tow truck as of today
. Was promised a title when purchased but never came through. Not
parting out good engine and transmission. The parts are easily worth
more than listed price. You can get a title with mvr4 will give previous
owners #

[MBZ] Recent Transmission Trouble: Stuck in low gear... 2007 Mercedes R350 - $3, 900 (Myrtle Beach)

2022-12-19 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Take $3k off the price and it might be worth considering

Per Local Mercedes Dealership it needs a Valve body for the
Transmissionquoted at $2700. While waiting for that quote I
purchased a smaller car and selling this one. I am not willing to have
it repaired at the local Mercedes Dealership as I don't trust them and
think they are too expensive.
