I have a corded sears chainsaw I bought maybe 30yr ago. I get it out
occasionally around the house where I can plug it in, and have used it with
that little HF $80 generator but the saw strains the generator.
The handle guard broke years ago so it’s probably dangerous as hell to use but

My 036 was bought brand-new at the local saw boutique, the only place
you could get Stihl at the time. (Circa 1995.) Spendy, as saws went.
I was cutting happily that afternoon.
The MS170 I bought fairly recently at the pawn shop. About $110.
Used, of course.

The last time that Jonsered (?) screwed me I called my brother and asked:
"If cost is no object, what's the saw I want?"
"Stihl".

As my brother the mechanic points out: Fuel, compression, spark. You need all
three.
For 'sudden', but quiet failures it's either a clogged fuel system, or a
failure of the spark.
Change the plug, check that it sparks suitably when you pull the rope. It is
unlikely that
the timing slipped,

The one I have is a poulon pro or whatever they are called from Lowes.
It was not the bottom model but the next step up I believe. It ran and
cut pretty good for a while, but last year when I needed it I could not
get the thing to start.

If I need a tool once I go to HF. If I use it enough to break it, I’ll replace

Harbor Fright has it’s place. I, too, have one of those $20 angle grinders,

I've been very happy with the Makita stuff. It's expensive but a couple years
ago the snowmobile club had to redeck a bridge. My Makita 18v 1/4" drive impact
gun was the only one that could drive 6" lag bolts all the way down.

Plenty of time for that! HF also sells one of these. For as little as I've
used the Fein, I'd probably
have been well served with the cheapie. But, it's _so_ nice using top-end
gear...
Back in my woodworking days I recall the Fein multitool coming out. I didn’t
really have a need at the time, and Fein stuff, while very good, was pretty
expensive.
I saved that money and put it into a Fein biscuit jointer. A wonderful tool as
well.
