Re: [MBZ] OT: charger outages leave northern Ontario EV drivers stranded

2023-07-07 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I have a home EV charging station connected to my solar roof panels.

I drove the Chevy Spark once; it is a lot peppier than the Leaf. Nissan
has taken pains to make the driving experience very similar to a gas car,
which means average acceleration. Most of the Leafs on sale here are very
low mileage and obviously well cared for (2015 and 2016 model year). I
also looked at a Kia Soul EV, for about the same price but uglier.

That's another problem with the charging stations, they all want you to use
their app and have an account set up with your credit card on file with them so
they can bill it and cross-reference it to all the other tracking data they
glean from the spying their app does.

I was reading that some countries are passing laws that you have to be able to
pay at the charging point with a credit card, just like at a gas station.

Re: [MBZ] OT: charger outages leave northern Ontario EV drivers stranded

2023-07-07 Thread mitch--- via Mercedes
When I was EV shopping 7 years ago I asked my boss if I could run an
extension cord (75 mile round trip is battery abuse in an 18kWh car, and
not even achievable in bad weather) and she informed me that DeWitt had
a free city owned Level 2 charger. IIRC the Downtown Development
Authority bought it and the city paid for the juice. Since we were dues
paying members of the DDA, I figured I could plug in at 8AM and then
move my car to the office at lunchtime.

The point of this story is that the DeWitt charger was free, but without
a Chargepoint account you couldn't even unlock the charge cord (lift the
nozzle from the pump, so to speak). I signed up with Chargepoint.com,
and it was pretty easy to log into the charger and access the J1772
connector. I ended up not buying the EV, and when tax season rolled
around in January 2017, I noticed the charge station was wrapped up in
yellow police tape. It took nearly a year before it was back in service.

The Spark's Level 2 charger is very weak, 3.3kW, or about 15 miles per
hour.
If I had to run an extension cord from the office and use the 120V Level
1 adapter that came with the car, it'd be more like 6-7 miles per hour.
Which reminds me of one of the reasons why I didn't buy the black 2015
Spark from the dealer in Wisconsin, it didn't have the $750 Level 3 high
speed charging option so I was limited to 16A at 240v and long trips in
that car would be slower than on a bicycle. IIRC the optional Level 3
port was good for 50A @ 400VDC (but the closest public Level 3 was in
Ann Arbor at the time).

I had a compact hybrid Ford sedan in 2018 as a rental. It performed well and
used very little gas. As I recall, after driving it for three weeks for a daily
driver I think I put $10 of gas in to the whole time.

I just came back from Wally World, where I took a look at the chargers they
have in their parking lot. It appears you have to pay no matter what. At least
that's what it appears, as it tells you to plug in the car first and then
you'll be prompted for the kind of charge you want. Nothing in the way of
instructions or information regarding the cost on the chargers, you apparently
have to connect up first before you can do anything. I did look on the website
for the chargers and this is what it said:

1-350 kWh $0.48 per kWh

Looks like they have a couple different kinds of chargers, regular and
fast/high capacity. I understand kWhs, but not sure how that translates into
charging.

Why?

It looks nice. I suspect the original interior colour was black but the
white looks nice. I wonder about the seat upholstery. If it is vinyl, it
won't likely breathe like MB Tex.

I wonder about the Bosch temperature gauge? And what is below that
gauge? Is it another or just a filler of some sort?

I was sort of interested in the Volt except for its price tag. So far as
I am concerned, any EV needs to be a hybrid so that one can go longer

By the numbers, the Volt was heavier and slower than a Cruze (same

2nd Gen Cruze/Volt, the mpg gap shrunk, the performance gap widened,
and even if I did 80% of my driving in EV mode I wouldn't save enough

But the heavy Volt was comfortable on the freeway, handled adequately
in the corners, was very quiet and acceptably economical in EV mode,
and driving to Florida was as simple as stopping for gas every 350
miles (10 gallon tank). But for me, the gas Cruze was cheaper, almost
as quiet, and had all the performance (2nd generation anyway) of my
2.3-16v.

If Dan wanted to stick a Volt in the Flagstaff garage, he could keep
it fueled from a 120V outlet, and a trip to Phoenix would be merely a
gas nozzle away. It might not be fast, but it'll handily out
accelerate a 300D, even a OM606 turbo.

A Leaf feels kind of peppy because of the instant throttle response, but
in reality it's slower than my Plymouth Horizon from 0-60. The short
lived Chevy Spark would keep the tires on the edge of wheelspin from
0-40, and 0-60 times were slightly quicker than my 2.3-16v.
The Spark was the prototype for the Bolt, which has much more battery
and does 0-60 in the six second range.

6-7 years ago I could have bought a 2013-2015 Leaf with around 10-15kmi
for about $10k.
I remember a dealer in Wisconsin advertising a buyback 2015 Spark for
$9k. Probably bought back because the owner decided they didn't like EVs
after they bought it. GM remembered the diesel fiasco of the 1980s and
did not want unhappy EV owners badmouthing their EVs. Now I wish I'd
bought a 5kmi Spark for $9k, and could now sell a 50kmi Spark for $9k
before rust or battery life became an issue.

IMO the Spark was the only converted EV ever made that was worth owning.
Even thought it didn't have a purpose built chassis, the drivetrain was
state of the art at the time. The Leaf was a better transportation
appliance/tool, but the Spark's motor would put a smile on your face.

Most other EV drivetrains of the previous decade were not spectacular
(Leaf) or spectacularly craptastic (Fiat 500, Ford Focus, Honda Fit).

Here in Flagstaff, which is sort of a stopping point for travelers on I-40
between Albuquerque and Vegas or LA, the only public chargers I ever see are
the ones at the local Walmart. I think there are four of them but I rarely see
them being used. I do know they have some sort of credit card POS terminal on
them, so I have to believe you're paying for the privilege.

I could justify an EV for just running around town, which I would expect would
be charged at home. I can drive across Flagstaff in under 20 minutes, so unless
we wanted to dash down to PHX and see AZ Bob (not this time of year, sorry
Bob!) long trips just wouldn't be necessary. And I would keep at least one of
the MLs for long drives. Of course, driving to PHX wouldn't be bad because it's
mostly downhill. The return trip might not be as pleasant, however.

Our family had the GM diesel fever in the early 80’s after I lit that flame
with my 1972 220D in 1978.
My dad bought four Chevy pickups with diesels for his business, traded his 1980
Toronado for a 1982 Diesel Toronado, and my pa-in-law waffled for three week
trying to choose between an ‘82 Monte Carlo diesel or an ‘82 Cutlass diesel. He
chose the Cutlass because my never say die MIL liked the color better.

Does the Costco have EV charging somewhere? The only public charging station
here is at a supermarket, they have like half a dozen Tesla charging stations
along the side of the building. It's not really apparent unless it's pointed
out to you. It's along the highway so convenient for people passing through I
guess. Woudn't do much for me as I'm rarely on that side of town.

Dad talks about how a couple years ago he did a site plan for an old sawmill
that got turned into luxury condos. The road in had been dirt and had been
oiled for who knows how many decades.

The state figured it'd be an environmental disaster which would require much
gnashing of teeth and cash.

When they tested they found that some bacteria had done the work for them and
there was almost no detectable oil on the ground saving the property owner big
bucks not to mention time and hassle.

The earth is self healing. As George Carlin said in reference to saving the

A local big truck garage will purportedly pay $0.25/gal for "clean" used motor
oil. I've got close to 20 gallons of the stuff. I need to take it over, I'd
give it to them if they'd take it
