2010 Dodge 1500, 4 door (all the extended cab Dodges are 4 doors now),
5.7l v8, 4wd, 5spd auto. We had tried a brand new one on Sunday and while
we liked it I just didn't want to pay that much money. This one was
considerably cheaper than new and only has 75,000 miles.

Anyway, goodbye rusty Ranger, hello fullsize truck goodness. Now if I need
to drag a car home I can do it with confidence. The Dodge is rated 1mpg
better on the highway than the Ranger. It'll be interesting to compare fuel
economy on long trips. The best I could ever squeak out of the Ranger was
19mpg, the Dodge is rated at 18 so it should at least hit 20mpg. Its geared
higher and should do well on the highway.

I do plan a couple upgrades, you'll notice the front end is very close to
the ground, its going to get a 2 leveling kit, maybe a new, smaller bumper
and probably a limited slip differential.

I'm debating what to get for a diff, I'm debating between a Detroit
TruTrac or an ARB air locker. The TruTrac is gear only, doesn't require
friction modifiers and is half the cost of an ARB while the ARB would give
better offroad performance and the option of a front locker if I wanted to
 get really serious.

In every case there has been a sharp decline in crime. In that same line of

instance, they are states which severely restrict or out right ban private
 gun ownership.

If you remove these Unarmed Victim Zones from the quoted calculations by

England, for example [Which is for all intents, unarmed] and places USA
near the bottom of the list as number 4 out of the 204 countries of the
world for the number of shooting deaths. Keep in mind there is an estimated
298,000,000 firearms owned by Americans [that figure may even be
conservative]. That number alone says there are millions of responsible gun
owners who use their private arms while carefully avoiding shooting another

The most pragmatic approach would be to ride to the bus stop, put the bike
on the bus' front rack, ride 5 miles to the bike path, and then ride the 9
miles from there to my office opposite Nationals Park. BTW, I boldly
predict that the Nats will win the World Series to the shock and dismay of
all baseball pundits, none of whom takes the team seriously.

Andrew could best answer that, but i was thinking he's in the DC area, and
if he's going into the office in Foggy Bottom, i don't recall much around
there that's not flat. (even places like Capitol Heights and Oxon Hill
aren't more than a couple-hunnert feet elevation. you can get closer to
400' out toward Bethesda, but that's on the far end of the commute range he
 described.)
yes, i recall some of the hills in that part of the world can be short
and fairly steep, but modern bicycle gearing goes so low that it makes easy
work of those; Granny Gears are your friend. Sit and Spin!;-)

(disclaimer; my perspective may admittedly be a bit skewed; i can
hardly do a recreational ride around here of over an hour or 2 that doesn't
involve a couple thousand feet of climbing. i've been doing this for fun
since i started on Extended Touring bikes carrying all my camping gear, so
 i'm pretty comfortable with Granny.)

all that said, if someone's got to wear the PA Ave uniform to work,
this admittedly might not work in the high temps and humidity that that
area is plagued with. i used to deal with a similar situation by driving in
once or twice a week to carry office clothes in, so i could ride in the
rest of the time in something more cycle-friendly.

I don't know whether his commute is flat or not. I have a 9.3 mile

In mine, the peak elevation is 397ft, the lowest is 59ft. In the first
2-2.5 miles, there is a single rise of 150ft in 0.2 miles distance,
followed by a drop of 75ft in 0.1 miles, followed by a rise of 75ft in 0.1
miles. The rest of the morning commute doesn't have any rises over about
55ft, and is basically downhill to the end at 62ft of elevation. A nice
 relaxed 9.3 mile bike ride.

Actually, the discussion was mainly about nomenclature of an AR-15, and
whether it is properly called a carbine, a rifle, or an assault rifle.

Actually, firearms are much closer to Mercedes content than are apple
trees; since they are both the pinnacle of mechanical technology of their

I'm not opposed to discussing hardware, be it small arms, watches, washing

Not a silly Sondy tale, but thank you, Wilton.

We had conducted the most intense bombing campaign ever against the
most heavily-defended complex in history. I was confident that the
campaign was over, that it had been won and that the war was finally
ending as we departed Hanoi for the last time.

During the following two years, however, after US forces had withdrawn,
Congress gave away what had been so dearly won.

And we are about to get into another situation like Vietnam and
Afghanistan. Years ago, we trained the mujhadeen in Afghanistan to fight
for us. What did that get for us? Hardened adversaries using our weapons
 and training against us.

In Syria, training and supplying the rebels to do our fighting for us has
all the hallmarks of both Vietnam and Afghanistan. With as loose and
convoluted things are among the Muslim in the mid-East, it is very likely
the weapons we provide will be used against our troops or Israeli troops.

In trying to take a short cut for a quick, easy solution -- no
American boots on the ground -- we are setting ourselves up for even
more long-term grief in the mid-East.

Even North Vietnam’s military commander, Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap, agreed
with me “What we still don’t understand is why you Americans
stopped the bombing of Hanoi (in Dec ‘72). If you had pressed us a
little harder, just for another day or two, we were ready to
surrender! It was the same at the battle of TET in ’68. You defeated
us! We knew it, and we thought you knew it. But we were elated that
your media was helping us. They were causing more disruption in
America than we could on the battlefields. We were ready to
surrender. You had won!” General Giap merely confirmed what many
Americans already knew. The Vietnam War was not lost on the
battlefields in Vietnam — it was lost at home by public opinion and
  given away by Congress.

And there it is. The media were and still are against the best interests
of the American people. They are only interested in keeping themselves and
 their cronies in power.

I prefer to think of the Schmoo rather than slaughterhouse techniques, when
eating beef liver.

Shmoos are delicious to eat, and are eager to be eaten. If a human looks
at one hungrily, it will happily immolate itself — either by jumping into a
frying pan, after which they taste like chicken
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taste_like_chicken, or into a broiling pan,
after which they taste like steak. When roasted they taste like pork, and
when baked they taste like catfish. (Raw, they taste like oysters

I wonder how it will work out for them as they were dropping off their

She tells me that they also require travel passes to go on the roads and
cross from one jurisdiction (something like a county) into another, and
have checkpoints all over to inspect vehicles and your papers to make
sure no undocumented visitors are involved. They apparently have a strong
dislike to anyone who is not Bhutanese or a visitor paying their visitation
 fees and spending money.

Our visitors here had a fascination with black people, and the fact that
there were so many living among us all. They had some very interesting
ideas in that regard. I tried to explain that many of our neighbors were
Gullah folk and they were having a really hard time wrapping their heads
around that idea. When I told them that their ancestors were brought here
from Africa with no say in the matter, he wondered why they didn't go back,
or we didn't just send them back. A practical question I suppose, somewhat
difficult to fully explain. There was one black family in his town,
recent immigrants from somewhere in Africa, they were apparently quite a
curiosity. Unclear how or why they were there.

There's a 3400 mile 1991 500SL on BW right now. The owners, an older
couple who bought the car new, went for a drive and found the car had a
head gasket leak, which was due to a failure of the metal on the block at
the edge of one of the cylinder bores. Only fix is new engine or tear down
the existing one and weld/machine the block. Needless to say it's a big
 chunk of change for either.

They're trying to sell it now, quoting the original sticker price, etc.,
without much activity other than people politely telling them they're nuts.

The actual reason they were painter brown it is said, is because brown

worse because I could only barely hear it. I offered her my headphones, I
 even offered her my speakers.

Finally the day before Christmas I stole the audio cable from the CDROM
drive to the sound card. She didn't find out for 3 or 4 days. When she did
she sent an email to the whole company I know who you are and I will get
you for messing with my computer!
She got an HR action. While she was in the meeting with HR (this is why
you don't send threatening emails to the whole company) our boss came over
and asked me not to do that again.

A couple weeks later she was back at it so this time I cut all the paper
out of the speaker. She in turn stole the power cables from everything in
the cube of the guy to my left... She got to pursue other opportunities
 after that.

I did something like that while working at Hewlett Packard in Colorado
Springs. The folks on the production line, some distance away from my
desk, would play the rock music on their radios rather loudly, so I got an
RF signal generator and an audio signal generator. I made a dipole antenna
about 5' long with a BNC connector and some wire and connected that to
the output of the RF signal generator with some RG-58 BNC cables. I
connected the output of the audio signal generator to the FM input of the
RF signal generator and set it for 1 kHz. I then tuned the RF signal
generator until I heard a raucous 1 kHz tone (I overmodulated the RF
signal generator compared to the FM standard), at which point the radio
 was turned down.

One time after having done that, I went to talk with the guy with the
radio. I said, I'd like to make a deal with you. The guy perked up. So
I said gently, Would you please turn your radio down? The guy was very
cooperative and did turn down the radio. One of his coworkers then said,
So what's the deal? I said, If you will keep the radio turned down, I
 won't jam it again.

 I had no more problems.

  Folks

I went on another jaunt in the 82 300td that we recently reattached the
mini folds on and rebuilt the turbo and replaced the oil pan and turbo
  drain seals etc.

Left friday afternoon for washington dc hauling a load of valuable
paintings and prints from a recent art show here. Went to somewhere in
 the
shenandoah valley, fri nite (maybe harrisonburg). Slept in a crummy motel
fri nite. Got going about noon went to DC and dropped the art. Left DC
about 6 pm in a mess of traffic saturday. I intended to stay with a
 friend
in richmond, but he was fighting with his wife or something, so he met me
at the interstate in richmond about 8.30 pm (actually the bus station,
right off of i-95 where i gave him a couple of HIS paintings that were
 in
the show, then i decided to push on to athens, ga …. only about another
 480
  miles.

I reached athens about 5.30 am.

I ran about 62 to 72 mph indicated (depending on speed limits). I was
dragging a trailer the entire way and hauling about 60 gallons of WVO on
that since the car was full of art.

So yesterday i ran about 750 miles all at the speed limit on WVO dragging
  a trailer.

The car used no oil and all i did on the 1200 mile round trip was check
  the oil a few times

And i was paid a pile of $$ for the trip.
  thanks,

Yes, that is the way to make a 240D/auto (which is how our's started its
life) perform. When you do that, it does work pretty well.

Just make sure you DO NOT downshift manually into low when coming to a
stop. If you do it at the speed the transmission wants to be in second
and then slow down some more, the transmission will slam into first,
causing the car to lurch and stress to be put on the innards of the
transmission. Do that enough times, and the transmission will break deep
inside. That's why we now have a 240D/3.0 with a stick shift -- a rebuilt
 auto tranny was $2500.

Right now, just sitting here, the repaired hernia is what hurts. Slightly
