I always like the “Lights from Mars” on the front of fire trucks. Those are
cool.

Re: [MBZ] W211 Headlight Bulbs

2020-10-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I had some assh*t behind me on the way to work one morning in a jacked up
pickup truck with one of the LED light bars hung under his front bumper, which
was about at my rear view mirror height. I kept brake checking him because he
was riding my rear, so then I just slowed down so he would pass me. After he
did I was blinded enough by his light bar that I had to use my brights until he
was well ahead of me.

They live in the neighborhood, so I made sure I got their license number and
forwarded it to our community service officer (sheriff) that is responsible for
the neighborhood.

Re: [MBZ] New Car

2020-10-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It was advertised at $3200. I looked at it on Friday. It remained listed on CL
through yesterday. I wasn’t terribly excited about it, so I sort of sandbagged
on doing anything.

I decided to offer the guy $2600.

I texted him an offer. He asked if he could wait until tomorrow because he had
someone coming to see the car. I told him no, as I didn’t want to become a
point of negotiation.

He went quiet for about 30 minutes then texted me back that he would take my
offer.

Best negotiating tool you can have - be willing to walk away...

And yes, it’s smoke silver. Never understood why they didn’t just call it gold.
Mushroom interior in very good shape.

[MBZ] New Car

2020-10-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Bought the 1999 E320 4Matic with 143k and two owners. Originally delivered in
PA, shortly after moving to Sarasota, FL. Smoke silver (yuck!) with mushroom
interior.

I’ve driven it about five miles and all appears to be well. It runs well, has
plenty of get up and go, and everything works, even the CD changer.

Ran a full set of diagnostics and got a lot of little “F”s, nearly all that
were related to battery replacement. Cleared all the codes and none came back,
so that’s good. The guy I bought it from put a conductor plate in it so I reset
the adaptations on the transmission.

Went through and made a “list ‘o’ parts” for my dealer guy, mostly soft stuff
as the car doesn’t seem to have much in the way of needs. I’ve got to pull the
cluster to change the bulb behind the odometer, as it appears to be out, and
the turn signal stalk seems sort of stiff but the signals cancel, so something
may be going on there I’ll have a look at.

All in all it seems like a pretty solid car. I’ll Martha the heck out of it
over the next few days and drive it some more to become more familiar with it.

I really liked the output and color of the Silver Star and Silver Star Ultras,
but as you mentioned, I found the useful lives of these pretty lousy. At nearly

Re: [MBZ] Mechnical interest/aptitude is not inherited

2020-10-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Accept it, Allen.

I’ve got two boys (men, really), one of which has no interest in cars or even
maintaining then, it’s just transportation from point A to point B. However,
when tasked, he’s actually done his own repairs, but that was during a fairly
short period of time a few years ago and has not occurred since. Not sure what
the impetus was, but it apparently passed and has not returned.

My youngest isn’t so much into cars, but he understands the value of
maintaining his and is very good about conducting routine maintenance and even
repairs when they’ve been necessary. He has a good grasp of how internal
combustion engines operate and could probably figure most things out with a
combination of research and tinkering.

It’s clearly not something that’s a part of their DNA.

I don’t fret about it too much. I just offer to assist when necessary and
gladly offer insight and advice whenever they’re looking over my shoulder when
they pass by in the garage and I’m working. Our generation was a lot different
in so many ways, I just accept it as a generational thing and do my best to
kindle anything in the way of interest when it pops up.

Enough piracy of their bulbs that they have a QR code on “real” ones you can
scan and verify authenticity on their web site. I bought some real HID lamps a

I’ve been looking at MLs around here, too. Almost nothing. There’s a 2004 ML350

Re: [MBZ] post office higher-ups are removing the German automaker's iconic three-point star emblem from the front of the vehicles

2020-10-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We had a contract carrier a few years ago that had a basic Chevy, like a
Cavalier or Impala, that had rigged a steering wheel on the right side of the
cabin with a spare steering column and a couple of bicycle sprockets and chain.
It looked real Rube Goldberg but it was actually pretty cool. Of course the car
was a beater, but it did the job.

Re: [MBZ] The Search Continues...

2020-10-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I think the lack of an engine driven fan is what threw me off. I thought that
was one of the indicators of a facelift car. Now I know better. Thanks!

I’m thinking about making the guy an offer of maybe $2600 and seeing what his
reaction is. It still listed today, so I don’t think he’s had any takers yet.
He said there were some people who were supposed to come by yesterday and look
at it.

Hmm.

Good to know. I couldn’t figure out how this would be the case. I’ll have to go
back and look at pictures for the steering wheel - I could have been confusing
it with the 2001 I looked at today.

I really like the electric fan. Makes so much more room in the engine

2020-10-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This is a 99 model year, but it’s definitely a facelift model as it has all the
stuff. I don’t know when the change took place exactly.

Delivery date was 10-5-98, “approximate” build date was October as well
according to the data card.

Steering wheel control buttons, door mirror turn signal indicators, etc., etc.

I was surprised as well when I opened the hood, as a giveaway is the change to
an electric cooling fan.

2020-10-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yeah, I know, but I’m not looking for a project, I’m looking for something with
lower miles that needs a good Martha’ing and some basic maintenance and be
ready to make a 1200 mile trip without incident. I don’t need to shuttle a car
until the end of November, but if I get something now I can use it as a DD and
be comfortable that it’s in good running condition and won’t need additional
work to make it bulletproof.

There are some potential project cars on the current market, but between the
crappy weather (heat) here and the limited amount of time I have to wrench
right now they just don’t make good sense. I’ll pay my money up front in this
case and get something I’m confident is solid.

Nope. Most dealers won’t let an owner see the VMI, short of maybe letting them
look at it on the computer screen. I have a source for them that emails them to
me. I just haven’t had a chance to get them the information. I might still get
it today, if not, Monday for sure.

We’ll see. I’m still sort of “meh” on this one, but the pickings are really

hate to act fro desperation as I’m not under any pressure, but I also don’t
want to buy something and not have time to thoroughly vet it before I drive it

[MBZ] The Search Continues...

2020-10-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Went looking at a couple of W210s sedans with 4Matic, not something that’s
common around here.

First one:

https://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/cto/d/valrico-1999-mercedes-benz-e320-4matic/7207020887.html

Pretty solid, mostly Florida car, guy is clearly a flipper and I called him out
on it (nicely.) I don’t care, flipping is fine with me as long as the price is
reasonable for the car. Exterior is good, interior probably an 8 out of 10.
When he got the car it needed a conductor plate and connector body as well as
front axles, which he’s done himself. Car drives well, everything works from
what I can tell. I haven’t seen the VMI on it yet, hoping to get one before the
end of the day. Don’t know what his position is on price. Looks like it’s got
three accidents reported against it, none major (“no damage reported”) except
one in 10/2018 which appears to have been repaired at the dealer in Sarasota.

I might go for this one if I could get it for maybe $2800.

Number two:

https://tampa.craigslist.org/pnl/cto/d/dunedin-2001-mercedes-benz-e320-4matic/7211065337.html

Looks nice, doesn’t it? This is a classic example of pictures not telling the
whole story. I was pretty stoked about this one, as it looked nice. As soon as
I saw the VMI I knew it would be a bust, but I figured I would look just in
case - you never know unless you look, right?

Delivered in NY, went to Chicago, was up North until 2017. Interestingly, the
miles put on the car while it was in Chicago were really low, like less than
3,000/year. This was encouraging, as I was hoping that maybe it was a summer
car for a snowbird. No such luck.

While it presented well in pictures, I could look into the corners of the front
of the engine compartment and see rust. Perforations in undercarriage metal
from rust. Surprisingly, the first place I looked was door bottoms, and they
were surprisingly clean. But underneath the car was a whole ‘nother story. On
top of the front fenders the paint was flaking off, too, something you can’t
see in the pictures.

I gave the car a cursory once-over to be polite and respectful about the guy’s
time, but immediately crossed it off the list. And also - it had a CEL and
BAS/ABS lights, which of course the seller failed to mention. “My mechanic said
it’s something that’s got to do with the wheel sensors”, he said. Yeah, I’ll
bet every one of them is rusty.

Pass.

I’m giving some serious thought on the first one until I can see the VMI. If it
was pranged and the dealer fixed it, I’m fine with that. I didn’t see any
indication of body repairs, so whoever did the work did it well. And I would
add that the seller disclosed the accident reports when he showed me the car,
as he had a CarFax for it that I didn’t look at.

Hmm.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Emergency power has been deployed

2020-10-09 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Two kinds of governors on these:

Mechanical, or “droop” governor. Runs on flyweights. No load frequency should
be set at or around 62-63 Hz so when under full load the generator set is at or
near 60 Hz.

Isochronous or electronic governor. Uses a speed pickup on the flywheel, much
like our crankshaft position sensors. Maintains generator frequency (speed) at
60 Hz under all conditions.

Mechanical governors are more common on less expensive sets, as they’re
relatively cheap. Electronic governors are much more expensive and typically
found on more expensive units.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Emergency power has been deployed

2020-10-09 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Good question. A lot depends on the prime mover being used and type of fuel.
With propane you get very little oil dilution, which is good, but you’ll still
have breakdown over a relatively short time due to the internal forces, I would
think.

The business uses a “once a year or 100 hours” approach for most units, as I
recall. Understand that no one uses synthetics or expensive oil in these
things, either. It’s usually pretty generic stuff for the most part. When I was
in the business we pretty much used Rotella 15W-40 across the board in
everything unless something specific was specified by the manufacturer.

Believe me, I am.

I’ve been following a story on a generator forum I belong to as a SME (subject
matter expert) about a guy in Lake Charles who has been keeping his generator
running while they’ve been without power. He was finally able to take it
offline a week or two ago to perform much needed maintenance on it, as it had
been running continuously since their last hurricane.

[MBZ] Today's Dealer Fun

2020-10-07 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes

So I swing by my dealer to pick up some parts I had ordered today. During idle
chatter with the counter person, I made a remark about how they're ahead of the
game because they had the display of “Scent Bombs” that’s always on the counter
filled up. For whatever reason, my dealer has all sorts of car “scents”, like
spray bottles, the good old pine tree hanger for the rear view mirror, etc.,
etc. They told me they can’t keep the stuff in stock. I joke about how badly
the cars they sell must smell if car scents are a major sale item at the parts
counter.

But wait - it gets better!

So counter person pulls me aside and whispers about how new models have built
in “air fresheners” that have a little glass jar that holds the smelly stuff.
The best part? The little glass jars of scent cost $120 They said that
people blow out worse than when they find out a replacement key fob is $300
over the $120 scent jars.

Makes me appreciate my “vintage” cars more every day.

That works, too.

Older siblings are retired or retiring. Wife’s brother is retiring in a few
years. Everyone lives in or near the south side of Indy except Mom in law, who
lives down here. Wife’s extensive extended family is all up there. We went up
to Indy a few weeks ago for my niece’s wedding in Brown County and realized
that the bulk of our family is there and we rarely see them, so it made sense
to buy a house up there for a second home.

Ideally, we could both work remotely up there in the summer and winter in
Florida, but that’s yet to be determined. Either way, it’s something that made
sense and will allow us to spend more time with family. Homes are cheap up
there and interest rates are in the tank, so it’s a good time to increase one’s
real estate holdings for sure.

Re: [MBZ] Nice car, interesting car jibberish

2020-10-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The sovereign citizen stuff gets caught in our data loss prevention system, so
I’ll see it when it hits the fence. It’s amazing to read and doesn’t seem to be
totally crazy until you read and parse the whole thing. My Mom got caught up in
this garbage years ago and was convinced that she wouldn’t have to pay taxes if
she claimed to be a sovereign citizen. It was silly to think, as she was
retired and probably paid little to nothing in taxes to begin with.

Fortunately, my brother, a commercial banker who also took care of her
financials, convinced her it would be a very bad idea for her to pursue this.
She backed off.

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: German Cars For Sale Blog

2020-10-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
A little, but not bad. These are fairly rare any more, and this one appears to
be in very nice condition and with low (>100k) miles.

Show up with $5k cash and see what they do. It’s worth that.

Agreed. A W108 with the inline six is an excellent compromise between style and
economy. While it would be nice to have the power of V8, maintaining the V8s
is getting to be an expensive and sometimes frustrating endeavor.

Yeah, it’s a bit of a pig on W210s. You have to unbolt the AC compressor to get
the driver’s side mount out, and the passenger side isn’t much easier. Glad I
didn’t need to do it.

Put my belly pan on, too Been sitting in the garage for I don’t know how long,
I keep meaning to put it on but never have a reason to get under there.

So I ended up replacing the fuel filter, which was due, along with an air
filter element, which was also due.

Car is now good for many thousands of miles more. Gotta love these W210s, the

cracked, so I ordered a pair along with a pair of new links. Under $50 for the
whole shebang from the dealer, a cheap and easy repair.

Maybe I’ll tackle the fuel filter now…

[MBZ] Today's Fun

2020-10-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
And yesterday’s, too.

I’ve had a CEL on the 1998 S210 wagon for some time, P0400, which is the EGR or
related stuff. I replaced it for just that issue about 14 months ago, and the
CEL returned maybe 2-3 months ago. With minimal driving and knowing it wasn’t
anything significant, I just let it go.

As the weather has cooled off here relatively speaking, I went out last night
and spent some time poking around. Found the short U-shaped vacuum line between
the manifold connector and pressure transducer at the EGR was split at one end.
This would definitely cause a P0400 error, so I replaced the cracked hose and
reset the computer. It takes two driving cycles for the computer to decide
there’s an issue, so I’ll have to drive it a bit to see if the CEL returns, but
I’m optimistic the problem is solved.

Today I’m going to replace the motor mounts and transmission mounts. The ones
on the car are not original and not in too bod shape, but I have a set of
Lemförder mounts that are taking up space on the shelf so I figure i’ll put
them on. I need to replace the fuel filter, too, so maybe I’ll do that as well.

Yup. The ML500 was lucky to average 14mpg on a good tank. However, when you

The app gives you the ability to remove or delete “trips” that it records. For

2020-10-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m using it at present, although grudgingly. Remember, I’m an IT security
professional.

Why do I use it? Because I get a significant discount with it, like 20%. When
your insurance costs exceed $3k/year for two cars, ten bucks is ten bucks, as
Geddy Lee says. I vetted the app and found that it’s pretty innocuous for the
most part, relying primarily on the accelerometer to determine braking,
acceleration and speed. Those are the biggies. They also ding you for time of
day, with late night and early morning being bad times to drive statistically.
They don’t appear to be getting any sort of location information from what I
can see.

As long as you don’t exceed 80 mph, change lanes rapidly, or jam on your
brakes, you’re good. In other words, Mrs. Dan DOES NOT have this app on her
phone.

My biggest gripe about it? It’s horribly inefficient and sucks battery power.
I’ve given feedback about it in this regard, and received notifications that
they’re aware of this and working to make it less of a drain. When I was
recently up in Indiana for four days I turned it off. Yeah, I was driving on
occasion, but I also didn’t want to have to have my phone on a charger the
whole time, either.

If the discount wasn’t as significant I wouldn’t bother with it. Sometimes you
have to balance security with benefits. In this case I’ll take the money and
let them look over my shoulder.

Re: [MBZ] YAY ME! -- W163 ML500 ignition switch / no start fixed!

Florida penalizes you 30 days after the purchase if you haven’t registered and
titled the vehicle. I believe it’s a pretty common thing for most states.

That being said, I don’t think it’s a significant amount.

bundt cake she was going to make today.

No (canned) pumpkin to be found anywhere. Publix had a sign on the shelf saying

Re: [MBZ] California is banning sales of new gas-powered cars by 2035.

2020-09-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Karl,

Based on what I’m reading it’s not so much of hate for California as it is for
the perception that Californians are all of the same political persuasion,
which some people don’t care for.

Guess some of these people know nothing of Orange County, do they?

Anyway, this thread is taking a political bent that is bordering on
inappropriate. Let’s keep it on topic without the veiled political references
or close it, please.

For what it’s worth, I lived in San Bruno and Montara (San Francisco) and found
it to be a lovely place with great people. If it wasn’t for the cost of living
I might still be there.

An old guy who was the A mechanic at the FBO at the little country airport in
Indiana my Dad flew out of years ago had what I believe was an UC-90, a tandem
version that the military used. His name was “Smokey” and he always flew it to
Florida for the winter with his girlfriend. I asked him one day how long it
took him and he said, “Oh, 3-4 days with a tailwind.”

I thought he was joking.

Well, if things get bad over the next few weeks I’ll know. I’m going back up

Re: [MBZ] OT: Dealing with Asia is weird

2020-09-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just flew up to Indianapolis last week to see family. It was surreal.

The airports, even at what would normally be considered peak times (Sunday
afternoon) were empty. Wander through security leisurely. No stores or
restaurants open, other than sit-down ones, and those were all serving
everything with take-out materials.

Southwest requires middle seats to be empty, so the planes were no more than
2/3 full. People actually got on and off in an orderly fashion, too.

Going back up in November, wondering if it will be the same.

Yup. My Singapore route connected through Narita.

Singapore to NAR - 7:00

NAR to ORD (O’ Hare) - 12:00

That’s a brutal, brutal day.

When I would fly to Seoul I often flew from Detroit direct on Northwest. That’s
over 14 hours in the air non-stop. Even in business class that was unpleasant.
I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like in coach.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Dealing with Asia is weird

2020-09-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I traveled to Asia a number of times each year. It was a total mind f*ck
whenever I went because of the “loss” of a day going over. Worse than that,
trying to interact with people back in the States was even worse, like “OK,
it’s 12 noon here so it’s midnight last night at home.” That leaves a fairly
small window of time to call home and not be disruptive, like at breakfast
(yesterday’s dinner time) or dinner (same day’s breakfast time).

However, coming back was even worse. If I came back from say Singapore, I would
leave at 8:00 am local time and arrive back in Chicago 19 hours later at 2:00
PM the same day in the afternoon.

Talk about messing up your mind. It certainly did.

Re: [MBZ] 1991 350SDL Vacuum pump

2020-09-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Correct. There is a “snap switch” that reverses the pump so that in one mode it
supplies pressure (unlock) and in the other mode it supplies vacuum (lock). It
also has a time out function if maximum pressure or vacuum isn’t met. If that
occurs, it won’t “flip” to the other mode, making it lock and not unlock, or
vice-versa.

We need more information. If the system is locking and unlocking, the pump is
good. There is most likely a leak somewhere.
