Ed,

I don't know where you are in Canada, but my local pet store at Yonge
Eglinton in Toronto carried the Dick Van Patten cat food in both wet
and dry.

The big anonymous stores like PetSmart(?) might not have it but the
independents should.

I believe it's to reduce the amount of oil going into the breather
tube that goes to the air cleaner. There was a dealer fix years ago
that involved using RTV to seal up the gaps there.

The oil filler cap has a gasket and if it's leaking it needs to be
replaced. It's interchangeable with your fuel tank cap. Swap them and
see if the leak goes away.

2008-06-22 Thread Jeff Zedic
That is the reason we HAVE a government.

I'm sure you get a strong difference of opinion about that with some
  people on the list.
This is where I beg to differ. The purpose of the government is to get
things done for the common good. Your gov't built the interstate
system, remember?

It's not supposed to be run like a business. It's not there to
support business as business can't elect representatives.

It's not meant to create jobs but to provide an environment whereby
jobs are created by the market. In the US people have a very negative
view of gov'tmainly people who don't bloody vote.

The media makes them look bad. If the media spent more time on
corporate welfare, rich farmers/stupid subsidies and institutional
corruption, maybe more people would be informed.

Instead, keeping them ignorant and entertained allows an easy ride for
the rhetoric/bullshit spinners to get elected.

You guys have a real mess on your hands and I don't see it changing
any time soon. A real sea change is required but you've painted
yourselves into a corner. Something real and tangible needs to be
done...maybe I'm just too idealistic but I agree with what Peter had
written.

This is why I think the current crunch will hit North America harder
than anywhere else in the developed world. Too much
selfishness.too much individualism and not enough individuality.

Any Audi that old is a rare car because they RUST like crazy.

However, the TD isn't a bad engine (my Volvo has the 6 cylinder 2.4L
version) and other than a fragile aluminum head (sound familiar to OM
603 owners?) they are quite robust.

Probably NOT a blown head gasket, although that's possible -- serious
cracking between the valves is usually the problem.  This can be bad
enough that the valve guides come loose and pump in the head.
However, the Volvo/Renault/VW head can be welded.

Actually the Previa did not have a trans fluid filter originally. It
had a strainer which was meant for the life of the vehicle.

Many people thought it was a filter and replaced it with some Fram

The price for a strainer was high...about three or four times that of

An equalizer can be helpful but most audiophiles do not use them. If
your system is set up properly there really should be no need for one.

If you have a boomy room or flat room then it can help.

I'm into stupidly expensive gear and do not use them. With my live
sound gear I used one because the rooms were always different but I
used a real time auto EQ so it was no problem.

Listening to mp3s, the EQ can make a big difference because of rubbish
sound from mp3s.

If your ear doesn't hear any difference then you don't need to worry.

The last thing an audiophile wants is another connection and circuit
in the sound chain.

[MBZ] Ahhh, those clever Europeans!

2006-10-09 Thread Jeff Zedic

From the Times of London driving section:

Used Cars

Times OnlineAugust 28, 2005

Mercedes-Benz E270 CDI
By Jason Dawe of The Sunday Times

In July 2002, having waited six months for the new Mercedes- Benz
E-class to hit the showrooms, I borrowed one. After driving several
hundred miles I was left with one overwhelming emotion: disappointment.

I loved the sleek lines and the clever technology; the huge boot
swallowed the largest load. But none of this could hide the car’s
Achilles heel: its engine. The 177bhp V6 petrol engine fitted to the
E240 sounded harsh when pushed, performance felt moderate and after 800
miles it had averaged only 21mpg.

But my reaction was out of step; almost universally the car was heaped
with praise. And it was 18 months before my opinion was to change.

*
This time I drove an E270 diesel. It was blessed with virtually
identical power to the petrol car on paper but in reality the leap in
torque produced a smooth wall of power that made the car genuinely fun
to drive, and it also averaged close to 40mpg. At last I understood what
everyone had been saying: this was quite possibly the best executive car
money could buy.

I also tried the more modestly priced E220 diesel with 150bhp. It still
felt good, and the 3.2 litre E320 diesel with 204bhp was a real hoot.
With these cars Mercedes proved that not only had diesel engine
technology caught up with the petrol equivalents but actually eclipsed them.

In fact only one petrol version is comparable with the diesel. The E500
boasts a 5 litre V8 that kicks out 306bhp and while economy is not its
forte you get huge performance — 0-62mph in 5.8sec and a top speed
limited at 155mph. A used example will cost about £25,000 and makes an
excellent buy. Both the E200 and E320 petrol engines, boasting 163bhp
and 224bhp respectively and introduced in 2003, are best avoided.

Once you’ve chosen your engine you have to decide on the trim level. The
entry-level Classic is far from basic with climate control, alloys,
leather steering wheel, electric windows and auto dimming rear mirror as
standard. It has front, side and head airbags, antilock brakes and
traction control. The car scored five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests.

Commanding a premium of about £1,500 on a used example is the Elegance
model which adds walnut wood veneer, automatic rain-sensing wipers,
power headlamp washers and electrically folding door mirrors. For about
£750 more the used Avantgarde adds flashier alloy wheels, sports
suspension, bi-xenon lights, blue tinted glass and a dark wood interior.

Whichever you plump for it’s best to choose an automatic box. They fetch
a premium of about £1,250 over the six-speed manuals but you’ll enjoy
near-identical performance, equivalent economy and easier resale.

On the move the car feels smooth, quiet and well planted on the road,
the clever electronics intervening when the car reaches its limit.
Leather upholstery and sat nav are desirable options and add about £500
apiece to used values, but multicontour seats that massage your back and
Airmatic suspension do little to enhance value.

Whichever E-class you choose it’s a pretty safe bet that you will be
buying a great car. Just make sure it’s diesel.

*The lactation cycle of a cow*

On most Australian dairy farms, cows have their first calf at 2 ½ years of
age. Cows have the same gestation (pregnancy) time as humans: 9 months.

After the calf is born, the cow will continue to produce milk for about 300
days - this is called the lactation period. During the total lactation
period, each cow will make an average of about 4,800 litres of milk. The
amount of milk a cow produces will differ each day. During the lactation,
period milk production peaks and after approximately 300 days it drops to
about 15-25% of peak milk volume.

*
*Image courtesy of Australian Dairy Corporation* *
At this stage milking is discontinued to give the cow a non-lactating
period of up to 2 months prior to calving again. With the birth of the new
calf, a new lactation cycle begins.

Milk production is usually greater during the second and subsequent
lactation cycles than in the first lactation cycle. A cow is normally
productive for five years.

I'm surprised you're asking this question as you've been here long enough to
know a rear fog lamp when you see one!!

I thought it was Super or Saloon...which would be silly because the E and C
are also available as a saloon car.

To make matters worse, some of these lights are tinted
blue, which creates even more scattering and glare than a normal headlamp.

Funny you should talk about glarethose DOT lamps are such total
shitthe other day I was sitting in traffic and compred the beam pattern
from my 124 Euro lights to the latest POS Merikan car next to me..I have
this nice cutoff in the beam pattern and the USDOT lamp is a big smear all
over tha back of the vehicle in front.

I think that THIS beam pattern, as well as a lack of proper aiming, is the
reason for the dazzle .

My step father can no longer drive at night because there's so much glare
from other people's headlights, that he can't see anything. He's 74. It's
not just the riced out boy racers. Everyone has their stupid fog/driving
amps on 24/7 and they STILL can't see what they're doing.

I know that I don't have any glare problems when I'm driving at night in the
UK. I still wonder why the USDOT wants us all to be blind at night! I think
they've based their syandard on some 50 year old nonsense..AGAIN!

The other day I was sitting in traffic and noticed the difference in beam
patterns. My 124 Euro lights make a very nice sharp cutoff but the DOT
lights are this horrible smear of light. Very big difference. It's
enlightening when you can do a side by side comparison like thatno pun
intended

Also, ast night driving back in to town
it was foggy.people had their fogs on but now 90% of their lights
weren't bothering me. The fog was dulling their lights enough to make them
bearable. Unfortunately, big ugly Ford and Chrysler trucks still were aimed
too high.

Sunil,

Provided of course that he didn't need to pay rent/mortgage, eat or clothe
himself.

I had a customer at the last job I had, a metal working tools company, that
made a 1/4 scale V12 that ran. We also had guys that made coffee can
turbofans that made thrust! They were the size of a coffee can, not made
from one...

Someone please explain how that larger frontal surface, looking like a 49
Ford, will make the vehicle more fuel efficient?

Also, why go back to the older crappier headlights instead of the
flusher,more integral nd smoother flowing
86 headlights?
