[MBZ] antique Dayton 1500 air compressor rebuild

2007-08-09 Thread Luther
Finally, yesterday I got fedup with the lack of performance from my $100 air
compressor.
Dayton model 1500
2 cylinder 2 stage
7 cfm
175 psi
600 rpm
60 gallon tank

I pulled it apart and cleaned, straightened, and re-bent/lengthened the
springs. Reassembled it with permatex to replace sections of paper gasket that
flaked apart. Spent about 1 hour with it and let it sit overnight for the
permatex and pipe thread sealer to cure.

Fired it up this afternoon and it filled the tank from 20 to 130 psi in 18
minutes. I placed a RPM gague on the compressor, and it's only running about
400rpm. Is this about right for a 7cfm compressor? Or should I take it to
Grainger and see if they can match the valves and rings?

TIA all.

 that's when problems start.

As Tom says, oil works as long as you have a good film.

Another method that helps is to leave spark plugs / glow plugs out and
disconnect the ignition/main power line so the engine will not start - then
crank until you see oil pressure on the gauge.

 Good luck.

Oil is fine as long as you are sure that you have a good coating during
assembly. The risk with oil is that so much may run or drip off that that
you don't have a good oil film in the bearing. But this is not likely if
 you
 oil then assemble right away.

A lot of people like assembly lube because you can verify visually that
there is enough on the part.

Plan's been revised. The cam is coming back off and getting cleaned of
all its Mobil 1, clean the head areas, then re-assemble with assembly
lube. I tried to turn the engine over by hand, and couldn't. I might
get back into it tomorrow morning after work. For now, I'm relaxing and
sleeping the rest of the day away.

Sure, but it's how I set the valves on my OM617s AND how I set this engine to

 I just checked - it's a 27mm.
Turning the crankshaft is one of the few times I pull out my 3/4
drive set. It takes quite a bit of effort to manually turn things. I'm
sure a 1/2 would survive just fine, but the extra leverage is a good
 thing.

RR of the cracked head. I installed the bearing caps in the exact order they
were removed, they are numbered 1-7. Thank goodness :D Bearing caps 2,3,4, and
7 were installed 1 turn per bolt at a time. I'm thinking that the mechanical
interference is not enough lube/metal on metal. That's why I'm going to take
it off and put it back on with lube. If I do it right, and there's still an
issue, I have bigger problems.

This is my first head RR. All I'm doing is following the manual word for
word. Hasn't been tough until this point.

The sequence of tightening these bolts is important to get an even
pressure on the cam.I haven't kept all the posts to this thread - I seem

I assume you made sure the cam bearing housings went back on in the same

Toms right, the Mobil 1 is not the problem. The only thing that will
prevent the engine turnng is a mechanical interference -

Re: [MBZ] thoughts on diesel clatter

2007-08-12 Thread Luther
Say an air compressor is set to turn off at 120 psi. This takes 8 minutes and
x number of strokes of said air compressor to achieve this. Then, change the
pressure cutoff to 110 psi, and it now takes 7 minutes 23 seconds and x-150
strokes of said air compressor. Then, change the pressure to cutoff at 130
psi. That takes 9 minutes 5 seconds and x+200 strokes of your air compressor.
***disclaimer:all previous calculations are random guesses***

The same physical rule applies to our injection systems. If you lower the pop
pressure, the timing will be advanced. If you raise the pop pressure, the
timing will be retarded. If you have properly set injectors (according to MB's
spec) and if your IP pump produces the correct amount of pressure per stroke
(i.e. not worn) and if your timing chain is not stretched, your timing will be
correct. Any one of these factors can change with age and cause the timing to
change.

This is simple physics folks, you can't break/bend the law.

Quoting Tom Hargrave [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

But for all practical purposes, diesel fuel is not compressible.

It's like the pendulum composed of 5 suspended balls. You pull one away, let
go and as soon as it hits the second one, the 5th one swings out, then the
5th one swings back in, hits the 4th one the first one swings out, etc,
 etc.

In this example, what's being transferred in the energy provided by
 releasing the first ball.

The same is true with the fuel in the injection lines. The IP delivers
pressure to the front end, the pressure travels down the line in a very fast
moving wave, the pressure wave overcomes the poppet valve spring pressure
the entire column of fuel moves down the line.

This is also why diesel injector lines are all a constant length. The
pressure wave travels at a set speed if the lines were different lengths
then you really would have a timing issue.

I know that Minneapolis is west of you and it is in the middle of the
country if you measure only east to west, but as Midwesterner, I don't
consider Minnesota to be Midwest. I am sure not many would agree with
my assessment, but I think the Midwest is Illinois, Indiana, Iowa,
Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Michigan and Minnesota are
the North to me, The Dakotas are the great plains, Ohio is something all
to itself, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Kentucky are the South, Texas is
practically its own country and is either part of the Deep South
(eastern part) or the West. Everything west of Kansas is west. There's
also the Northeast, New England, the mid-atlantic, the south, the deep
South and Alaska and Hawaii. This is my definition, and probably most
 don't agree.

I grew up in Missouri, New Jersey, and Mississippi. The Midwest (my
definition) fits me the best. But, my brother lives in the South
(Memphis) and my parents live in Mississippi, so who knows. I bet most
folks in MA would feel like a stranger in a strange land in Kansas (with

How much oil useage can worn valve guides cause?

It's a fairly steep but short driveway.

I notice that there is an unpleasant amount of smoke when I do this. I
thought maybe it's just that I notice it since I'm backing into the
exhaust. But tonight I smelled burning oil.

Was wondering if somehow the angle of the car coupled with the inertia
of moving backward could cause the engine to burn some oil?

I don't know how this would specifically work, it's just a bit of
 general detective work.

You need valve seals or guides AND seals.

an unofficial list of agents that we wouldn't deal with for a job we sold.

Claims and liability are somewhat limited due to laws and waivers and such,
and since nobody has mentioned it There are generally three types of
coverage that movers have as options:
   - full replacement cost coverage (the item is repaired up to the replacement
 cost, or is replaced).
   - actual cash value coverage (which is a misnomer - it takes into account
 the
age of the item and its original purchase price, and is aggressively
 depreciated)
   - whatever they give you for free (the above two cost money), which really
 is quite limited

There is generally a deductible option as well to knock down the price of
the coverage. Mind you, it's not INSURANCE, it's really quite different.

It's been many years since I worked in that industry. Parts of it were fun,
other parts I don't miss at all.

Seriously, the best way to move is to sell everything, and buy new at your
new house, if the move is over a long distance. By getting rid of the big
furniture, you knock the cost of the move way down, and the little stuff in
boxes, and small appliances that are easy to move you can put on a uhaul
 or in a truck yourself.

You will need a wireless bridge. Then, for the connection to your shop,
connect another wireless router to the bridge. You will have to configure
the bridge with a computer attached to it, then add the second router. There
are standalone bridges, or routers with bridge capabilities (USR only?).

If the signal could be relayed from the house to the shop some way (200'),
the TVDirect dish, mounted on the house, would work with a Lynksis antenna

 Suggestions?

Re: [MBZ] O/T Router

2007-08-25 Thread Luther
Bridge mode is used to connect two isolated networks wirelessly. If this
feature is enabled, wireless clients will not be able to connect to the
Wireless MAXg Router. Bridging is used if you are trying to connect two
networks or two groups of wired clients, each with its own Wireless MAXg Router
or wireless access point, that cannot be conveniently connected using Ethernet
cabling. An example of this type of situation would be two homes that want to
share network resources without running cabling through their yards.

quoted from the manual for the 5461 I just ordered.

and maybe more, like the 124. There have been lots of 230, 250 and

Re: [MBZ] OT, Toyota problem

2008-03-04 Thread Luther
Frequently in our big trucks, when a driver complains of the truck overheating
and no heat, he is 2-3 gallons low on coolant. This is a system that holds
about 11 gallons. The heater core is sometimes one of the higher or highest in
the cooling system, and will sometimes be the last to receive coolant. Make
sure you have the system bled completely.

Let me add some info, I wasn't expecting such a good response, thanks.

I was flushing the cooling system and had both radiator hoses, both heater
hoses and the thermostat out to do the flushing. It started getting hot on
a short trip, so I added some coolant and headed home. It started again, so
I opened my heater valve (manual) to add another radiator and while the temp
needle climbed, the heater blew cold.

I did not suspect the thermostat, but tested it on the stove while it was
 out and it did well.

Of course during flushing with a garden hose, through the heater core both
ways, radiator both ways, etc, etc, everything got wet.

Are there any clues in that story?

I'll start checking what you guys suggested and check back here shortly.

 Thanks

[MBZ] Fwd: AGM Batteries

2008-03-10 Thread Luther
http://www.windsun.com/Batteries/Battery_FAQ.htm#AGM, or Absorbed Glass Mat
Batteries
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absorbed_Glass_Mat

Is this the technology behind Optima batteries?

From: Casey Hicks
Sent: Thursday, March 06, 2008 3:33 PM
To: DTC DL Maintenance Breakdown Employees
Subject: AGM Batteries

AGM, or Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries

A newer type of sealed battery uses Absorbed Glass Mats, or AGM between the
plates. This is a very fine fiber Boron-Silicate glass mat. These type of
batteries have all the advantages of gelled, but can take much more abuse. We
sell the Concorde (and Lifeline, made by Concorde) AGM batteries. These are
also called starved electrolyte, as the mat is about 95% saturated rather
than fully soaked. That also means that they will not leak acid even if broken.

AGM batteries have several advantages over both gelled and flooded, at about
the same cost as gelled:

Since all the electrolyte (acid) is contained in the glass mats, they cannot
spill, even if broken. This also means that since they are non-hazardous, the
shipping costs are lower. In addition, since there is no liquid to freeze and
expand, they are practically immune from freezing damage.

Nearly all AGM batteries are recombinant - what that means is that the Oxygen
and Hydrogen recombine INSIDE the battery. These use gas phase transfer of
oxygen to the negative plates to recombine them back into water while charging
and prevent the loss of water through electrolysis. The recombining is
typically 99+% efficient, so almost no water is lost.

The charging voltages are the same as for any standard battery - no need for
any special adjustments or problems with incompatible chargers or charge
controls. And, since the internal resistance is extremely low, there is almost
no heating of the battery even under heavy charge and discharge currents. The
Concorde (and most AGM) batteries have no charge or discharge current limits.

AGM's have a very low self-discharge - from 1% to 3% per month is usual. This
means that they can sit in storage for much longer periods without charging
than standard batteries. The Concorde batteries can be almost fully recharged
(95% or better) even after 30 days of being totally discharged.

AGM's do not have any liquid to spill, and even under severe overcharge
conditions hydrogen emission is far below the 4% max specified for aircraft and
enclosed spaces. The plates in AGM's are tightly packed and rigidly mounted,
and will withstand shock and vibration better than any standard battery.

Even with all the advantages listed above, there is still a place for the
standard flooded deep cycle battery. AGM's will cost 2 to 3 times as much as
flooded batteries of the same capacity. In many installations, where the
batteries are set in an area where you don't have to worry about fumes or
leakage, a standard or industrial deep cycle is a better economic choice. AGM
batteries main advantages are no maintenance, completely sealed against fumes,
Hydrogen, or leakage, non-spilling even if they are broken, and can survive
most freezes. Not everyone needs these features.

While you have the oil cooler lines out of the way, tighten the oil filter base

 I haven't done it on a W126. If I were to do it again on a 116, I'd
unhook one end of the left engine shock (I ruined a shock mount jacking
up the engine the first time I did this without unhooking the shock),
put a 2x4 under the left side of the oil pan, raise it a bit, unbolt
the left mount, raise the engine some more, remove the left mount,
and RR the hoses. On both ends of the hoses, loosen the fittings
by putting a wrench on the nut, and one on the fitting that the
nut screws onto, and squeezing the two wrenches together. This avoids
putting torque on the filter housing and the cooler.

[MBZ] SDL RUNS!

2008-03-10 Thread Luther
The gorgeous weather of the last several days has prompted me to get off my
lazy bum and finish the SDL head RR adventure. Took 2 jumps of a freshly
charged but almost worn out battery to get the fuel system primed and the
engine running under it's own power. Starts and idles fine. YEEHA.

Now, I need to fix the transmission fluid leak.

You need whatever socket removes the tailshaft nut. May be
castle, more likely 12-point. After that I think it's a standard
pry it out with screwdriver hammered through it and tap in a

Re: [MBZ] Antenna success

Shoot Deoxit into the antenna as it moves up and down. It will self-clean any
corrosion, lubricate the mechanism, and increase your reception. BTDT on 3
different antennas. It even helps against freezing in place :)
