[MBZ] From Greenwire -- AIR POLLUTION: EPA issues guidance for diesel engine NOx controls
This Greenwire story was sent to you by: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [1]Greenwire An EE Publishing Service Greenwire -- Friday, March 30, 2007 AIR POLLUTION: EPA issues guidance for diesel engine NOx controls Daniel Cusick, Greenwire reporter Tens of millions of tons of diesel fuel pollution, including nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter, could be reduced under new U.S. EPA guidance that allows automakers to install selective catalyst reduction (SCR) technology on diesel-powered cars and trucks, the agency said today. The [2]guidance, issued this week in a 10-page memo from Karl J. Simon, EPA's acting compliance and innovative director, to automakers, will help manufacturers comply with tough new emissions standards for NOx emitted from diesel engines. The standard, set at 0.20 grams of NOx per brake horsepower-hour, is being phased in between model years 2007 to 2010, according to EPA. NOx is a primary component of ground-level ozone, the nation's leading air pollution threat, and is also a precursor pollutant in the formation of fine particulate matter, or soot, that affects millions with asthma, bronchitis or other lung ailments. Since EPA published its diesel engine NOx standard in 2001, engine makers have experimented with a variety of technologies to control the pollutant. Selective catalytic reduction, which is already widely used to control NOx from area source emitters such as industrial plants, ultimately won favor with EPA and manufacturers because it can achieve as high as 90 percent reductions in NOx. In a release, EPA said the new guidance on emission certification procedures for on-road diesel engines using SCR technology helps pave the way for putting more innovative and fuel-efficient clean diesel cars and trucks on America's roads. While endorsing the move toward greater use of SCR on diesel engines, Simon noted that the technology is still evolving and added that EPA reserves the right to make any necessary changes to the guidance as conditions warrant. One concern about SCR's use in motor vehicle engines is that the technology requires regular replenishment of a NOx reducing agent, usually ammonia or urea, to be effective. If an engine were to run out of its reducing agent while in use, its NOx reduction capability would drop to zero, according to EPA. Because the NOx efficiency and thus the NOx emissions performance of an SCR system is so dependent upon a nitrogen-containing reducing agent, it is critical than a vehicle using SCR never operate without the reducing agent, Simon wrote in the guidance letter. Yet many manufacturers have warned that they would not be able to store sufficient volumes of ammonia or urea on a motor vehicle to allow for federally recommended maintenance intervals of between 100,000 and 150,000 miles. As such, It may be appropriate for EPA to approve an industry-wide scheduled maintenance change, as we have done previously in similar situations, the guidance states. Manufacturers will need to gain approval for their SCR strategies as part of the EPA certification process. Among the other requirements for certification are driver warning systems and inducement measures, a track record of system durability and reliability, and reducing agent quality and availability, EPA said. Diesel engine manufacturers, represented by the Diesel Technology Forum, have assured that all new engines being produced for highway use will meet EPA's air pollution standards, including for NOx and particulate matter. In January, the group announced that all new big rigs are equipped with innovative new PM-trapping filters and that NOx emissions have also been significantly cut due to improved technology. The enginemakers said model year 2007 trucks are 90 percent cleaner than the previous generation of trucks. Allen Schaeffer, director of the Diesel Technology Forum, said this morning that the new SCR guidance comes after nearly two years of conversations between EPA and enginemakers over how to make further reductions in NOx emissions. He said it sets the stage closer to a time when we'll have even cleaner diesel engines that are delivering even higher fuel efficiency. Dieter Zetsche, chairman of DaimlerChrysler and head of its Mercedes car division, also issued a statement saying his company welcomes and supports EPA's guidance on SCR technology for on-road diesel engines, adding it serves to reinforce diesel's benefit as a viable alternative to help reduce fuel consumption and ultimately, reduce oil imports. [MBZ] From Greenwire -- BIOFUELS: Some restaurants try dishing up home-cooked energy
This Greenwire story was sent to you by: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Personal message: The end is near for greasers ** BIOFUELS: Some restaurants try dishing up home-cooked energy (Wednesday, June 11, 2008) Used vegetable oil from restaurant deep fryers has long been waste that restaurants paid to have trucked away. But times are changing. Skyrocketing fuel costs have allowed some restaurant owners to avoid disposal costs by giving the waste oil to car enthusiasts who have found ways to run it through their engines. And some grease bandits have even been known to tap restaurant grease vats and siphon off the valuable stuff. And soon, restaurant owners may have a new option. Enter Vegawatt -- a diesel engine that burns used cooking oil to generate electricity and preheat water for cooking and cleaning. Now being site-tested by Boston-based Owl Power Co., the system is designed to give restaurant owners the benefits from their used fuel that might otherwise go to motorists. Right now, the biodiesel folks and the grease car folks are getting that oil for free, and restaurants are actually giving that away, and it has a lot more value than they realize, said Chad Joshi, Owl Power's chief executive. Joshi estimates that with a Vegawatt unit, a typical burger joint or doughnut store can save 20 cents in disposal costs per gallon of used oil, while generating electricity worth $2.20 and, by using the engine's waste heat to pre-warm water used in the restaurant, avoid 60 cents in natural gas costs. Many restaurants store waste oil in 55-gallon drums or other large containers for disposal, and Owl Power's unit would replace that, Joshi said. Currently seeking beta testers in the Boston area, the company plans to start leasing the units in the fall for about $400 per month, Joshi said. Energy savings at the target facilities would be $700 to $850 per month, depending on how much fry oil the restaurant uses. Supersized potential? The company is talking with big names, including McDonald's and Chili's Grill and Bar, as well as independent Chinese restaurants and other shops, and is targeting any chain that you could name, Joshi said. There are over a million restaurants in the U.S., and about 25 percent would be candidates for having one or more of our units, he said. Chili's representatives did not return a call requesting comment. Veggie oil disposal companies typically model their businesses on converting used oil to biodiesel, according to Joshi. Since those companies have significant infrastructure costs to collect and transport the fuel, he thinks Owl Power has a competitive advantage, even if the price of diesel goes high enough that disposal companies would be willing to pay restaurants for the waste oil. For eateries eager to flaunt their green credentials, reusing fry oil on-site could be as tempting as a to-go bag of doughnut holes. Of course, since disposers also make fuel from the grease, the eco-credentials of the two processes would be roughly comparable. But generating electricity from fryer power has a ring of eco-cachet that could prove irresistible in today's marketing climate. Joshi said Owl Power is privately held by himself and company President James Peret and will be looking for new funding and partners over the next year to expand nationwide. If the business takes off, it could spell bad news for greasers, the auto hobbyists who modify diesel engines to accept vegetable oil. Running a car on the stuff requires tricky switching between a starter fuel like biodiesel and the fry grease, but a slew of Web sites and user groups exist to help novices figure out how to convert their cars and where to find friendly restaurateurs who can help them power up. Converting a car to run on veggie oil is illegal, violating emissions rules in the Clear Air Act. Vegetable oil has not been registered as a motor oil diesel fuel, said an EPA spokeswoman, so selling the stuff is also an offense, though giving it away does not appear to be regulated at the federal level. Rather than get involved in the shady world of grease theft and back alley car conversions, restaurant owners may well take to the idea of using their own, home-cooked energy. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

As the end of a series of thoughts about asbestos, I sent a sample of linoleum off to be tested. It came back negative, but the samples of sheetrock/joint compound I sent off later turned out positive. So, last Friday and Saturday I was helped by Charles Perea of the Johnny O. Perea Foundation to take down the sheetrock, using all proper protections, including a high volume, HEPA filtered blower which sucks the air in the kitchen, filters it, and blows it out an outside window. Two very long, tiring days and we are not finished yet. Sunday morning, we went out to the '94 E420 to go to church and found it ran VERY roughly. So we got into the '95 E320 and drove off. We found the heat wasn't coming on as it should. Yesterday afternoon, I tried the E420 again, and found that it smoothed out, but had a lot of lifter noise (I did change from Castrol 10W-40 to Mobil 1, but grabbed the wrong bottle and it ended up with 2.5 quarts 15W-40 and 5 quarts 0W-40). The lifter noise quieted down after awhile. I'm thinking it was a collapsed lifter and wondering how much of a problem that will be. I noticed on the E320 that there was more airflow out the footwell vents as it was changing from heating to cooling than when it was in the heating mode. I hope that's not too hard to fix. Craig I am surprised that they did not recommend that you just leave the drywall alone or perhaps cover it with another layer of new stuff. I read some of the information on their site after your post and they seem most intent upon not disturbing any material that may include asbestos if at all possible. Not what most of us want to hear. We have vermiculite insulation in the attic out at the lake and I would love to have it gone. They (Perea) say it is best not to disburb it and that it is difficult to test and confirm that it contains or does not contain asbestos. I have thought seriously about trying to vaccuum it out of the attic but do not wish to have the dust filter down into the rooms below. The house is old enough that there is no poly vapour barrier in the ceiling so there would be cracks that might permit some to filter down. My other choice may be to put up a poly vapour barrier and then cover the ceilings with new material from below so that I have less concern about the filtering down of small particles when it is windy out etc. The kitchen is drywall so it is fairly tight with the exception of the two lights but the living room and one of the bedrooms have wooden ceilings that will not be quite as tight. I do wonder how dangerous it might be to remove it if I was careful and wore a good respirator etc. Again, my major concern is that disturbing it in the attic might cause the particles to filter down into the rooms below and I am uncertain as to how one might best prevent or clean that up after. They talk about putting poly sheeting down but it would be difficult to cover everything and then remove it without losing some of it. A professional crew with experience might know how to acccomlish that but I am afraid I might just make matters worse than they currently are. The guy took exceptional care of the car. Evidently, he was a little neurotic and wanted the radiator cap replaced at every oil change. All work from new was done at the dealer. Including the Inspection II that was done less than 9,000 miles ago. This is a dealer service that costs between $800-1200 plus anything things that it needs. At this inspection, the dealership checked a ton of stuff (too much too list) and did the following: Changed rear differential fluid, flushed braked fluid, flushed power steering fluid, flushed coolant, replaced plugs, replaced all filters, and checked, inspected and lubed a WHOLE bunch of other things. Bach is in the Baroque era/period, it's pretty difficult to compare them. It would be like asking who is the greatest Sports figure? When the question might be who is the greatest football player? It's pretty hard to compare a football player and a tennis player. Likewise, it is difficult to compare composers from different eras/periods. So, Bach is arguably the greatest of the Baroque period/style. And arguably, Beethoven the greatest of the Classical period. EXCEPT, ole Ludwig only wrote 9 symphonies. So, I think Mozart gets the nod. Some people would include Beethoven in the Romantic period, but I think that is incorrect because his symphonies followed most of the strict formalities of the classical periods. He might be a transition between the two. For me, the greatest of the Romantic period is Wagner. Donald H. I thought there was a gun show exemption from background checks. My mistake. -- Sent from myMail app for Android Thursday, 09 April 2015, 02:01PM -0400 from G Mann g2ma...@gmail.com: Andrew, Yet again, I feel I must speak in response to your latest posting. First: The article is in error because of it's hoplopobic reporting focus. Apparently, you are drawn to that, which is your right, just as it is mine to point it out. Second: It seems now likely both yourself and the writer of the posted article are not aware of the standard practice at ALL gun shows that requires the checking of ALL weapons and then securing them with a safety tie wrap through the firing mechanism UPON ENTRY to the gun show. NRA is simply a HUGE GUN SHOW... This is simply standard safety practice used at ALL gun shows to ensure against unintended discharge of any weapon. Third: This practice is a STANDARD SAFETY PRACTICE when entering and exiting any shooting range I have ever attended. ALL weapons are cleared of bullets in the barrel, and ALL magazines or cylinders are emptied BEFORE leaving the line of fire, while the barrel is pointed DOWN RANGE.. Simple and primary gun safety practiced by RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS as a universal practice. Fourth: The writer attempts to make this standard safety practice a platform for hoplophobic social engineering under the guise of gun control.. This is an insult to anyone who understands and practices standard gun safety. Thus, wrong. Fifth: I invite you to satisfy your fascination with all things gun by making contact with a certified firearms instructor and taking an introductory course where such basics are covered as gun handling, gun safety, and very basic shooting skills introduction. I sincerely believe you would come to understand more about the real facts of ownership and responsibility that comes with ownership of a firearm. I am a certified firearms instructor myself and over the years have often come in contact with people who only saw a gun on TV or the movies, being used most improperly and often illegally. These perceptions have become ingrained in the minds of many, unfortunately. I urge you to expose yourself to the facts on gun safety and use. There is a group called USCCA which, if you contact them, will steer you to one of their certified instructors, in your local area, which you may find helpful and educational. You are a smart man.. the decision is yours, I only suggest. Respectfully, Grant... Re: [MBZ] Someone in IL needs this 116
They were never badged as 450SE L 6,9. Just 6.9 on lower right corner of trunk lid, sometimes with 450 SE L as well on the left corner -- Sent from myMail app for Android Saturday, 04 October 2014, 04:56PM -0400 from Peter Frederick via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com: Exactly. The car is a 450SEL (long wheel base W116) with a 6.9L instead of a 4.5L V8. This is standard MB badging -- if the W116 had originally had the 6.9 as designed, it would be badged as a 690SEL. Fat chance on that, there was a very substantial difference in price point, that 6.9L is VERY expensive. Obviously there are other diffrerences, but MB names the car line by the original engine size (4.5L = 450, etc) as a rule, then later modifications will get a badge on the right side. Hence a 300D 2.5 Turbodiesel for the 5 cylinder 2.5L turbocharged engine in the W124 chassis, which originally had the 3.0L OM603 instead of the 2.5L OM602. Just how MB names cars. Re: [MBZ] The Brakes that WON'T - 1983 300TD
I like your explanation better than any of the others because it's a cheap fix. -- Sent from myMail app for Android Monday, 10 November 2014, 11:48AM -0500 from Randy Bennell rbenn...@bennell.ca: Is there a check valve in the main hose leading to the brake booster? I had a vehicle way back that would periodically lose the power brake function and scare me half to death. I changed the hose between the booster and the intake (it was a gas engine) and that solved the problem. There was a check valve in the hose that would sometimes stick. RB On 09/11/2014 9:23 PM, Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes wrote: Some of you will recall my write up of the intermittent loss of power braking on my 1983 300TD, coupled with the loss of engine shut off (won't turn off with key). I fiddled with a rubber connector to the brake booster line, and happily the problem disappeared for nearly a week. The issue then resurfaced, but now the following symptoms occur all the time: 1) Power brakes completely gone - must apply extremely forceful pressure on the brake pedal (or petal, if you prefer). 2) Cannot shut off the engine with key - must be done manually 3) Vacuum door locks completely inoperative, even with the engine running. Otherwise, everything else on the car works fine. Whoever is the first to successfully diagnose this problem, based solely on the symptoms enunciated above, wins a coveted ATTABOY. Good luck.
