Good to know, thanks! I suspect they’re utilizing Github repositories, but I
don’t know much more than that - I’ll check. We’re sorely in need of a cloud
architect, as the one we had left for lots and lots more $$$. They’re actively
recruiting for one, but I wonder how successful we’ll be since we’re government
and can’t possibly afford to pay the salaries that the private sector is
offering.

[MBZ] /rant/ Facebook Sellers

2021-06-19 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
FB sellers have to be of a class of human that is missing some sort of
understanding or logic. Or maybe intelligence. To-wit, I am sharing some of my
FB experiences for consideration and support of my theory:

“1 owner car” - I see a reference to an accident on the CF - “Before I owned
it” - “But I thought it was a one owner car?” - “I’m a dealer in NY - because
of that I don’t have to collect sales tax, so I can write up the invoice for
something less so you don’t have to pay as much” - so not only are they lying,
they want me to be complicit in tax fraud?

Clearly a sale by a old couple - I message them. Two days go by with no
activity. I finally get a response -“Give us your email address and we’ll send
a copy of the CF.” I do so. Two days later they message again with their phone
number. I call it and get voice mail. Ask for the CF, give my email address
again. Crickets. I text with my email address, it goes through as they’ve got
an iPhone and I can see the read confirmation. Two days later - a text asking
for my email address. I text it - again. A day later I get six or so discrete
pictures of the CF pages texted to me.

Several sellers with ads less than a day old. I message both. A day later and
the messages haven’t been read and of course, no response.

WTF is this? Are people just stupid?

Grrr.

Re: [MBZ] Photography is not my strong suit - 2001 CLK320 - $500 (and others)

2021-06-19 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
For the benefit of the masses:

Microsoft, like other “cloud” providers, allows you to create or “spin up”
virtual computers, typically servers, in the cloud with nothing more than a few
mouse clicks. It’s easy to do and can be done in a matter of minutes. This ease
in accessibility tends to have customers spinning up servers as they please,
which is a Good Thing for Microsoft, or Amazon, or whomever the cloud provider
is. Why? Because they charge you for it - monthly.

Think about this - with a few clicks of a mouse I can have a full blown
production server provisioned however I like - your choice of operating system,
RAM, number of processors, drive storage, network interfaces, etc., etc.

These are the virtual equivalent of 100s of thousands of dollars of physical
hardware. The providers charge accordingly.

So it’s easy to see how someone can get out of control with this stuff and
really go to town. My data scientist geeks are cranking up some very powerful
virtual machines because they’re crunching data, and lots of it. Not only that,
they’re installing Microsoft software like SQL (database) whose licenses are in
the 10s of thousands of dollars a year, if not more.

This just started, so I’m waiting for the accounting folks to go ballistic when
our next monthly Microsoft invoice comes in for payment.

I'm sure it's some variant of the shit where they will pay more in operating

it would involve a slightly higher capital cost. "Hey, not MY budget." Even
if one corporate entity is who is paying ALL costs in the end.

So, how you rig the game will result in how successful it is overall, over time.
Ultimately I'm sure it's why big companies die, and small ones are formed.
They get ossified and inefficient, and the new small sharks swoop in and
eat the lunch, and eventually the carcass, of the big fish. Ad infinitum.

That was it. Thanks, Curt!

I can’t imagine my 6’1” frame would comfortably fit in that thing. I would
probably look like some big kid in a pedal car. Not to mention the wheelbase
being so short that your spine would be seriously impacted on bumps. I drove a
Jeep Liberty a few weeks ago and the short wheelbase on that thing was enough

Re: [MBZ] OT: Huge dog or tiny car?

2021-06-21 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Buddy/neighbor across the street got a 2005 4WD Jeep Liberty with 130k on the
clock for free. Something to do with someone at his church he helped out when
they were in a tough spot a few years ago, they don’t drive it anymore,
whatever.

He has a teenage daughter that will be driving age at the end of the year, and
being a single Dad this was the perfect opportunity to get a car for her. It
needed a COP on #6 and a couple of calipers rebuilt. He did the calipers with
my guidance and a couple of rebuild kits and I replaced the COP.

I drove it a little bit last week and did not care for it at all, as described.
I guess if you offroaded much it wouldn’t matter, but as a DD it would be a
literal PITA.

It seems to be a pretty rugged vehicle and is simple to work on, but I’m still
not impressed.

Re: [MBZ] heavier 123 front springs

2021-06-24 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Shocks typically remain the same, as suspension travel doesn’t change, just the
spring rate.

I’m not sure if it’s the same for a W123, but for the earlier models there was
a formula you had to employ that took all of the various options on the car and
drive train to calculate which springs were the proper ones for the
application. It was in the service manual.

You can probably identify and possibly get stiffer or taller springs from
Mercedes. Give me the VIN and I’ll look in the EPC to see what optional springs
were available for it.

Mercedes offered different springs for various models to accommodate road
surfaces/conditions in different parts of the world. When I was replacing
springs on my former 1965 220SEb there were no less than 4 different springs
that could be used in both the back and front suspensions.

Re: [MBZ] heavier 123 front springs

2021-06-24 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
They would. However, the mass of the engine and car itself are unchanged in a
stock setup. The stiffer or taller springs in these cases were meant to offset
the poor or rough road surfaces. Shocks have nothing to do with ride height -
they dampen the action of the spring as you suggest. And it’s not so much that
they would be “heavier duty” necessarily, the damping rate is changed with
different valving. In some cases they might be larger in diameter to
accommodate a larger volume of hydraulic fluid to deal with the larger/heavier
load, but ultimately it’s the damping rate that matters.

We’ve all seen cars that had bad shocks if we realized it or not - they’re the
ones that when they hit a bump or change in the road surface they “bounce”
rather than the suspension absorbing the hit and the frequency of the amplitude
of response is quite rapid. That is, they take a while to “settle down” after
such an event.

I would add that there are a lot of companies out there who employ these tools
but don’t tell their employees. More than you might imagine.

So dumping an employer because they use such things doesn’t make a lot of
sense. Simply conduct yourself appropriately when working and you’ve got
nothing to worry about. You’re using their resources to do a job you’re hired
to do, not to surf the Web or watch “Karen” videos on Facebook.

And why would this matter unless you’re doing things that aren’t business
related on the business’ computer(s)?

This is a concept that some people just don’t seem to be able to grasp, and it
never ceases to amaze me. I’ve seen people who do all sorts of personal stuff
like deal with doctors, do their taxes, even run a home rental business on a
work computer. How stupid can you be?

My personal favorite is when someone is job seeking and they use their work
computer to send out resumes and correspond with potential employers. That
takes some balls. Or they’re insanely ignorant.

And of course this could be a massive bluff, too. Software that does this is
stupid expensive. They might be saying this and then just putting it on a small
group of machines, too.

Quite honestly, they’ve got plenty of information from the logs and browser
history to nail you up if you’re playing around. We pull this stuff all of the
time for our HR department. I don’t need screen shots or keystrokes to tell if
you’re goofing off or where our computer is located.

Re: [MBZ] Corporate spying software

2021-06-25 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
It’s a red herring.

We had to fight with our HR department to make some of them understand that
logging people’s activity was not a means by which you can determine if they
were working. Fortunately, our HR director recognizes that it’s the employee’s
work product that shows if they’re performing or not.

Just because an employee is or is not on their computer doesn’t mean they are
or are not working. It would never stand up in a dispute, unless you have very
specific activities or tasks that person is supposed to perform.

For instance, I have to complete a training class for a performance item in my
annual plan. I spent time using the (written) study materials, meaning I was
not on my computer, I was studying. That doesn’t mean I wasn’t working.

It’s almost as dumb as the employers who use activity monitors - software that
records or monitors activity on a computer. Push your mouse around once every
15 minutes and it’s happy. There is even third party software to routinely
simulate mouse clicks or activity on a timed basis to defeat these. Dumb.

Lowe’s is more froo-froo like interior stuff, Home Despot is more nuts and
boltsy, like for contractors.

I totally agree with your observations, however, and despite my local Lowe’s
and Home Despot being literally across the street from each other, we only
patronize the Lowe’s.

We’ve found that with Lowe’s we can negotiate on large purchases, like
appliances, too. When setting up the house in Indy we were going to buy through
Costco for some better warranties and such, but went to Lowe’s to see what they
could do. I gave them the list of things we wanted with model numbers. They
came back with a far better price than Costco and beat the warranty coverage.

I would add that this is not the first time that we’ve been able to negotiate
deals there, either.

Their people seem to be better and longer lived in the sense that there’s less
turnover, too. We’ve worked with a kitchen estimator that’s been there easily
10 years, and a carpet person for close to that.

Any time I’ve had a concern they’re quick to respond and work with me to
resolve it.

I’ve probably spent $40k at Lowe’s over the past 10 years, and haven’t
regretted it in the least.

Finally got hot enough for me to decide to fix the AC in the '95 E300 I
bought from Dan a couple years ago. Took all of an hour, if that, to get
the compressor out (front seal was leaking). After removing the wiper
washer fluid tank and loosening the serpentine belt, I had easy access
from
above to get all four bolts loose, remove the manifold connection, and
also
the electrical connection on top of the compressor.

And then OCD takes over, and I spent about 5 hours cleaning off the
compressor, carefully opening it up, carefully taking it completely apart
and replacing every seal and o-ring, and using the proper PAG-46 oil
filling it back up with oil. There was some nastiness on the valve
plates,
kind of burned looking, like maybe the compressor was run low on oil or
something. If this thing dies, I'll have to spring for a new compressor
I
guess. Rebuilt two other compressors and never saw anything like this.

The nice thing about these Denso compressors, 10PA-15, is the only
special
tool required is a belt wrench or a chain wrench to hold the clutch while
you loosen the front nut, and then a shaft seal sleave to cover the
compressor shaft splines as you press the front case back on with the new
shaft seal.

Popped that back in, replaced the filter/dryer, then vacuum and fill the
system up. Took me about 8 hours all together, but ICE COLD AC is now
back.

Only weird thing is that the recirculation function doesn't work. Press
the button and the light comes on while you hold the button down, but as
soon as you let go, the light goes out. Not able to troubleshoot that
yet,
could be a bad switch I suppose or might be the PBU.

I would defer to Mitch, as he’s the firearms expert around here.

I loves my Ruger revolver despite it being single action. I have a Super Single

I think single action makes you work a little harder to make your shot, since
you’ve got to cock the trigger every time.

I have, too, but I’ve found that by the time I check on someone’s stock it’s
either gone or the cost of shipping doesn’t make it any better of a deal than
what I get from my regular ammo supplier.

Ammograb is another one I’ve looked at.

Re: [MBZ] 2000 CLK320 - 102k miles - $4,000

2021-06-29 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
The DAS can read some of the top stuff, but not much - it’s pretty much a black
box for the most part.

BBA Reman can rebuild and repair them, although it’s not cheap. I think I paid
$350 some years back for mine to get repaired when it was throwing a fault I
couldn’t clear. I was able to determine there was a fault in the controller,
but what that fault was could not be revealed in DAS. Some research suggested
that the accelerometer that’s in the controller was bad. This is critical for
the operation of the roll bar, so if it fails the roll bar won’t deploy in a
rollover. In pre-facelift models this is controlled by microswitches on the the
rear suspension, but in facelift models that job was taken over by an
accelerometer that’s inside of the top controller.

It acted up again a few years later, but since they have a lifetime warranty I
just sent it back and they repaired it for free. I marked it so I knew if they
replaced or just repaired it, and I got my controller back.

Yes, and the radio is trashed.

These use the D2B fiber optic setup, and if someone goofs with it there’s
little chance of getting it back in original condition. There is no easy way to
interface between the Bose system and an aftermarket stereo. Just about
anything you’ll find is a kludge.

Looked at a 2007 ML500 tonight. Sounded really good, had a really good history.
Owner was a chain smoker and had clearly not cared for it in the last couple of
years. Sad what someone can do to a 15 year old car that was really nice two
years ago. The reeking of cigarette smoke was the icing on the cake.

The search continues. Sigh.

Re: [MBZ] Corporate spying software

2021-06-25 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
They do, but they’re not perfect. I can tell you that we see on average about
200-250 emails a day that either have malware or are phishing that get caught
by ATP (advanced threat protection). And consider that this is a dynamic thing,
in that these perpetrators are constantly crafting and re-crafting stuff as
quickly as it gets caught.

For example, our county attorney got phished this morning with an email crafted
to appear that it was from one of our consulting attorneys from an outside law
firm, asking him to open/download an attachment that claimed to be information
for a case they were working on for us. The payload was bogus and would have
blown up had they attempted to do so. Fortunately, a sharp-eyed assistant noted
that the “from” domain didn’t match the firm’s domain so she reported it. And
it has been my experience that attorneys are typically far from tech-savvy.

We use Outlook in an Azure tenant, which goes a long way in killing this stuff
as you’ve got the collective exposure of literally millions of accounts that
Microsoft administers in the cloud, so there are economies of scale from the
standpoint of identifying bad stuff and then sharing that information out.

We beat it into our employees that if it looks even remotely sketchy, delete it
or hit our “Phish button” in their mail client. That sends it to a sandboxed
email account where we can analyze it and see if it’s malicious. We’ll often
blacklist domains that this stuff comes from once we’ve gone over it, too, as
well as reporting it up the chain to Microsoft and others.

We also use endpoint detection that resides on the workstations, and the second
it sees something funky going on it immediately locks the machine down and
alerts. So even if something does get past the user and starts to do something
malicious, we’ll know it and that machine gets isolated.

Not foolproof, but it helps. A good line of work to be in, like being an
undertaker. No matter how bad things get, there will all ways be a need for our
services…

2021-06-26 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I’ve found that more often than not FCP’s free shipping gets things to me as
fast or faster than the paid option.

I saw this today on FB marketplace and messaged the guy. No word back yet:

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1282151905538067/

2008 ML550. “Needs a little work” according to the seller. Says it shifts
poorly from 1-2, but the ATF is low and they don’t have time to top it off. At
first I thought this was a red herring, but then I remembered that the 722.9
trannys have to be filled from the pan with a pump and the fill adapter, right?

And then you have the adapter that fits in the tube that you have to use to
pump fluid into it?

I’m surprised the DAS wouldn’t give you fluid level like it does for engine oil.

1997 Mercedes-Benz

With basically all the attention paid to the E55 AMG when talking about the
W210 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, I think sometimes we forget that there was another
V8 in the family. Well, technically two V8s with the aging M119 in the E420 and
the new kid on the block M113 with the facelift E430. Today, we have one of the
best early E420s I think I’ve come across in a long time, and even better, it
is painted in Viola Metallic. This won’t last long.

Wow. What a spec on this one. This was well before any E55 was even announced
for the US-market, so if you wanted a V8 E-Class in late-1996 and early-1997,
this was it. A major factor on this one is obviously the Viola Metallic paint,
and given how many of these were silver/tan/grey/black/white, this one is a
breath of fresh air. I know not everyone can do purple cars, but I am all for
it. Add in just over 57,000 miles, and this one looks like a winner to me.

The Buy It Now price tag of $9,000 seems reasonable given how the market has
been, but makes me think twice considering I’ve purchased two E55s for less
than that. Still, I think this is an awesome buy and priced reasonable, so it
wouldn’t surprise me if it sells fairly soon, if not already sold. Grab it
while you can, but I don’t think there is another like it.

Re: [MBZ] Shop/garage LED lights

2021-06-28 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Maybe it’s the quality of the lamps you’re buying?

I buy only name brand, like GE, and I’ve got a house full of them that are at
least a couple years old or more. Have yet to replace one.

I did have to replace one in an outside fixture, but it’s on roughly 8-12 hours
a day and it’s in an inverted position, which I suspect might have something to
do with the failure, not to mention the temperature and climate extremes it’s
exposed to.

I gladly use LEDs over CFLs, as I hate having to wait for them to “warm up”.

Re: [MBZ] AC work this past weekend

2021-06-28 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Say what you will, but I’ve had ClipLight Super Seal fix leaks in AC systems on
cars here in Florida, and they’ve lasted 2-4 years or more. Only stuff I would
consider using. That’s even for nasty ones like W140 evaporator leaks.

The other thing you have to deal with is the porosity of the original hoses, as
they weren’t barrier style hoses. That’s the cause for the annual “top off”
that many older systems often need.

I had a 1982 300SD I put almost 200k on over a four year period. When I got it
I put barrier style hoses on it and completely rebuilt the system, everything
but a new evaporator. In the four years I owned it I put exactly six ounces of
refrigerant (R-134a) into the system, and that was more as a precaution than a
need. It made ice cubes in the hottest weather.

I did the glow plugs on that car, but unfortunately I used Bosch. I have

Kleb’s just miffed because I sold you the car and he missed out on the deal.

But now that you mention it, one of the glow plugs has died, so I need to do
that job now. Dan's son or the previous owner had just paid for that job,
there was a receipt with the car, but I'll bet the garage that did that used

soon as you let go, the light goes out. Not able to troubleshoot that

could be a bad switch I suppose or might be the PBU.

I know I did a complete set and they were Bosch. Later on I was told that
modern Bosch GPs were lacking in quality and that Beru were considered far
better and longer lasting.

I used antiseize on them and reamed them.

Re: [MBZ] Shop/garage LED lights

2021-06-28 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Mine are primarily GEs from Lowe’s. I have some big globes I used to replace
similar incandescents in our guest bath. Big and clunky, but put out more light
and far, far less heat. They’re now used in a new fixture that inverts them, so
it will be interesting to see how that might affect them.

One place I’ve found LEDs to be significantly better is in the underside light
on my microwave. On microwaves that are mounted over a stove the work lights
they offer are typically 40W “appliance” bulbs that are really weak when it
comes to illumination. I bought a “corncob” style 40W equivalent for our new
microwave, and it makes a major difference on the amount of light that shines
on the stove top.

Get a roll of drain tubing and rent a Ditch Witch for a day. Run a drain tile
from that area out to the road or to the pond.

Readily available from any dealer for a little over $100. Don’t use URO!!! OE
rubber is the only way to go.

I would find and pay a competent mobile glass guy in your area to do the work.
These can be notoriously difficult to do, and they’re easy to crack as they’re
often laminated glass if there is a rear window defogger. It might take some
calling around on your part, but there’s someone in your area that will do this
for you. Finding a replacement would not be fun, and it would likely be
expensive.

A Sun Valley rebuild is only $1750 exchange. That’s not bad. Get the car for
$1500, drop about $2500-$3000 for the transmission and R and you’ve got a

If the car is original and in good condition $40k-$50k would not be
unrealistic. I didn’t look that closely at it, but if it has been repainted and
not a “correct” MB color for the vintage, that would take away from the value.

That being said, restorable parts cars like this that are drivable are bringing
in the teens on a good day. Beaters in the 20s.

I suspect the ask is not being shown because he’s afraid it will put people off.

Re: [MBZ] W123 transmission pan bolts torque

No sealant. There is a rubber seal that is used that seals perfectly without
sealant. The pan has places formed into the edges that make it seal properly
and will distort if you overtighten. A common misstep by many, which causes the
pan to leak.
