Does anyone, other than J. Cathey as I've already contacted him), have any
experience with the guide shoe on the 450SL electric windows. Glued or

Rich,
I noticed a couple of things from the write-up you provided 1) Your write-up
references your work on a '79 300TD and I'm not sure this is the same as my
'84 300D, and 2) The addendum you added relative to a creaky sound emanating
from my front end was from a couple years ago and was
A month or so ago J. Reames provided a write-up of his SD front suspension
refurbishment. Since I've got a rot-a-tot or rot-a-tot-tot sound emanating
from the front end when I go over bumps in my '84 300D and, since I can't
tell exactly where it's coming from, is there anyone who's got a

Jim,
I unwound the plastic drive ribbon from the main drive wheel via thumbing
the rubber belt on the motor when I had the antenna drive unit open. After
all was cleaned up, I reinserted the plastic drive ribbon, which is attached
to the antenna mast, back past the pinch roller bearing and into
I had to take it apart again to try to figure out why it wouldn't
extend/retract after my cleaning the internal plastic drive ribbon and main
drive wheels of some minor gunk. I couldn't find anything obviously wrong,
as there was continuity across the red green wires attached to the little
For anyone who may have read my previous post regarding the stuck two center
sections of the antenna on my '84 300D, I had some success by squirting Kano
Kroil in the antenna shaft and allowing it to sit over night upside down
and, with some gentle persuasion, I was able to free the two stuck
Considering the accident frequency, due supposedly to infrastructure (non)

I periodically use a silicone spray lube on my '84 300D antenna to clean the
shaft(s) to prevent sticking due to dirt. The antenna appears to have four
sections, but only the top (narrowest) and bottom sections extend no matter
how much effort is taken in cleaning and running the antenna up and
Gary,
It's been that way for years, I used the train from Dallas-Philly in '62 and
it was a joke then. From Dallas-Chicago it was the Santa Fe then and, other

again), the Santa Fe was clean, etc., but Chicago-Philly was the

Anytime I'm on an X-way or I-state, I tend to have my low beam headlights on

Allan,
I'm presuming your question relates to your '83 300D? If so, you may have
seen the start of problems with the overly complex MB ACC system and its
infamous electronic modules. Since the ACC pushbutton unit in the center
dash console sort of directs traffic (flow, etc.) and the ACC amp,

e.h., There was a recent local evening TV news story as well as an article
in our Sun. newpaper indicating our county tax rate being the second highest

Tony,
Inspections in NY for diesels are $10 yearly, as diesels are exempt from the
emissions inspection as is my '76 450SL gasser, whereas PA is quite a bit
worse than this. Since Rochester (Salt City) has many swiss cheese vehicles
on the road due to the excessive use of salt here, something

The old saying relating NY, the land of taxes is still the rule as the
county in which I currently reside has one of the highest tax rates in the
country. Where I'm headed (NC), the taxes are 1/2 of what they are here.

One of the products which is highly touted for this purpose is POR-15. I've
used this on an old Volvo I had and a winter Buick, but it didn't last
long. Since I had previously garaged and not driven my '84 300D in the
winter until this year, I had two rust areas (Rt. front fender/valence
John,
The creaking sound, almost like a rusted door hinge from a B-horror movie,
is probably coming from your lower ball joints. The rubber boots tend to
age and crack, allowing lubricant to exit and crud and H2O to enter and rust
the ball joint. The fellow who did mine, the best MB mechanic in
I've seen yellow, orange, and black coverings on diesel fuel handles. Even
though I inform the attendants at the BP deli-mart that I'd like to put X$
