Re: [MBZ] OT watering deep
I'm not so sure your problems are related to the ground being dry. It sounds like the ground is settling, and I think adding water to it will accelerate that process. Hire a professional foundation expert and get their opinion. You may need to excavate around the foundation, prop the foundation up to the proper location, and add sand to keep it at the proper height. I did learn that covering the surface of the table saw and jointer out at the lake with a sheet of tar paper helped a lot. I did that last fall and this spring, they were better than the previous year and I think things were as wet this spring as last. I have a new issue that is sort of the opposite. The ground around my house is too dry and that is causing some shifting. Doors are sticking and it is obvious that the south side of the house is down somewhat - not really visible to the eye or noticable when one walks accross the floor, but put a level on the floor and it is surprising how much it is down. We added on to that side of the house in 1987. The original basement is still reasonably level but the addition has sagged somewhat on the outer edge away from the basement. The basement has footings and a poured concrete wall. The addition is built on piles and a gradebeam. There are a number of bell piles and a couple of straight piles as there were a couple of spots where there was water coming in when they drilled and they were not able to bell the bottom. Here in the Red River Valley we have lots of good old clay gumbo. It swells when wet and shrinks when dry. It has been dry. I have been wondering how I might introduce more water down near the level of the footings to see if that might help to move the house back into level or at the very least, prevent it from getting any worse. I can live with it the way it is if I have to but I would not want it to get much worse. That would pose issues that would be more visible. I see tree root feeders but I don't know if they are long enough to go that deep. I also wonder about creating cavities if one pumps water in under pressure. Anyone have experience in this sort of thing or good ideas? I also wonder about a sort of reverse French drain. Could I drill some fence post holes deep, fill them with a pipe liner and stone and just pour water on them from above? Or do you think I would need pressure to make the water go down the hole? Re: [MBZ] bendix 2 speed
Eh, your car analogy is orange to my apples. A wheel that needs the equivalent of $5k of work is on the verge of catastrophic failure that you can't ride home on. Spokes are loose and ready to break, your rim has a crack in it, the hub has pitted bearings or blown seals, etc. The way experienced wheel builders explain it, there are 3 kinds of stress on a wheel. Side to side, rotational, and up/down by gravity. If a wheel isn't built to handle all three types, it will fail prematurely. Unless you are a 90lb rider, you will cause at least one of these types of stress. In my case, it happens to be the combination of my 1100W power and 195-200lb rider/bike combined weight that is torture on rear wheels. I'm onto my second rebuild in just over a year, one cracked rim due to a pothole, and a second dented rim to a pothole that also put a dime sized hole in the sidewall of my tire. My next wheelset will be about 2mm wider allowing for more air to protect me and the rim from the bumps on the road. I'm trying to say that the wheel is still going to be stressed if you're going 12mph or 45mph like I was this weekend. Whether or not you consider yourself a cyclist doesn't have that much bearing on the stress on the spokes. Re: [MBZ] OT for bike geeks: Cannondale H200
As others have said. Clean the bike chain, gears, and derailleurs with a degreaser, preferably one that is NOT water based. Simple Green is fairly good, just keep it away from paint and the brake surface. If you do happen to get some on the brake surface, clean the surface with a clean rag and alcohol. Inspect the rubber items (tires, brake shoes, and handlebar grips) for cracks or gooeyness and replace as needed. Check brake and shifting cables for smooth operation, and plan to replace them if there is any resistance. They need to be resistance free or brakes will stick and derailleurs will grind and not shift smoothly. It was suggested to repack bearings, this may (read 99% likely) require special tools, especially for the crank and wheels. Also, the headset may need specific adjustment, depending on the style. Probably best left to someone with experience and tools. When you apply lube to the chain, coat the chain liberally with a good chain oil that will NOT attract/hold dirt. Leave it soak for 10 min or so, then wipe ALL of the extra off the chain with a clean-lint-free rag. This will minimize any collection of dirt that wears the chain prematurely. Re: [MBZ] bendix 2 speed
If you're not breaking spokes due to power, you'll be ok with the normal gauge as spokes are stressed mostly when you put power into the crank. Weight generally only stresses the rim and hub as the spokes can distribute the weight amongst themselves. Ask your 10 minute wheel builder if he is using stretched spokes. (for example, on my trek 520 project, i wanted a shimano 126mm drum brake hub. not much chance the guy who supplies you with those crappy cheap tires could even figure out what that is) to my mind, understanding the wire spoke wheel is a sign of something good and i know of only 2, maybe 3, guys in this town who get it ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
