Thanks for the suggestions, Mitch.

One thing I failed to mention was that given the choice, I would prefer not to
have a pump action shotgun, if possible. I realize the 870 is pump action, but
I was using it as an example of a popular, inexpensive and readily available
gun.

Any suggestions for a non-pump action shotgun?

It would depend on what went wrong with the tranny. Most of the older 5 speeds
are generally pretty solid, but the seals tend to leak and if you don't check
the gear oil they will lock up. I paid $500 for a used 5 speed for my Jetta.

?Did you check into the BF Goodrich? I replaced the original Pirelli with a set

Feh. Gotta buy a new set of skins for the wife's 2005 Mazda 6 before she

it up to Indy

I'm looking at Goodyear and Kumho, but I'm wondering about Falken. Anyone
have any direct experience with Falken? I've heard of them, but don't know
anyone who has actually owned a set.

Conti and Dunlop are right out, as I've never had decent performance with
either one. Michelins are nice, but I'm not paying a premium for a name.

She's got these damned low profile tires on the car (they're stock) and the
things are obscenely expensive because of the tire style.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Rusty Euro Audi Parts

2008-04-30 Thread mykd1
Some of the Audi models do list both because the rear on some models was the
split race/bearing, but the front was sealed. I think most of them from the mid
80's had the sealed front, but the back is split. It might be best if you give
the year and the model of your Audi before you decide which bearing you need. I
think the differences were before VW bought Audi and now they share alot of the
same assembly procedures to save money.

Sealed type for what years? You see, the worldpac catalogue lists the

Yeah, I've been perusing them but want to ensure that they'll fit.

I need a wheel bearing and don't know if it's inner/outer or case

Any way to know for sure?

advisor also recommended replacing the exhaust manifold which is clogged
with carbon deposits ($745.00). The engine has been sluggish lately, so I
don't doubt the diagnosis. I was wondering if you have experienced similar
problems with your M-B turbo diesels. Any advice would be appreciated.
TIA, I'll forward any knowledgeable suggestions to him.

I would find someone who would clean the manifolds (if the exhaust is
clogged the EGR has clogged the intake as well) instead of replace them.
Seems pretty silly and expensive to me. He should probably look

Tell him to check out www.tdiclub.com They have a good forum there and

Not accurate to refer to it as a convertible. That implies it can be
converted
from an open to closed vehicle.
No mention of any additional stiffening welded into the undercarriage to offset
the missing roof.
I wouldn't be able to license it here as it would neve pass the safety test.
Wonder how mouldy the interior is. CT gets rain as I recall. AZ maybe but CT is
a bit cold and wet for no roof at
all.

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes on TV

2007-11-04 Thread mykd1

I didn't follow the whole post on that so I wasn't sure if anyone had it
figured out.

Curiosity got the best of me so I sent a request asking about the car. They
wrote back saying the car was rented for the show. They didn't specify the
year.

I don't know if anyone had figured this out, but the tv show
Moonlight mystery Benz is a 280 SE Cabrio. Possibly a 68 or 69

And as has been mentioned, something like that on Pushing Daisies.
Lady Heather also had something like that on CSI. Yes, Mistress.

Re: [MBZ] OT Honda use of dramatically unequal treads - Opinions wanted

2007-11-03 Thread mykd1

Hey Brian,

?Its not really much of a big deal except where the spare is *front or back* If
it's on the?front you might want to swap it to the back. The spare, because its
at 100% tread, will want to pull as you go around corners so you will
definately feel this. Just limit your trips and don't do any highway driving
because its possible that because the CRV is independently sprung on all 4
wheels, this could cause a alignment problem. I'd get 4 new ones as soon as you
can

Okay, I tried to explain in the subject what I need to know:

On our 2000 Honda CRV, the tires are probably 1/3 tread remaining or
less. We have a nail in one of the tires, so I put on the spare which
has about 100% tread.

The difference in tire diameter is clear, but how big a deal will this
be? Need to worry, or not?

We are looking for a minivan; I've suddenly been stricken with the
idea of trying to find a VW Eurovan in good shape. I really like the
seating configuration and interior space layout.

Anyone have any experience with them? I had a Jetta years ago and was
quite satisfied with it. How is the VR6 engine, longevity-wise? I
know the old wasserboxer in the Vanagon was pretty high maintenance.

Dingdong in JE Sheckel service van blew at red light on the highway
this morning about 7:30 and totaled my 300D. Hit the front door as I
drove across the highway doing about 60, wasn't watching the road
(duh).

I got away with some glass embedded in my left arm (gotta go have that
dug out in the next day or to, I think) and some very sore ribs.
Didn't break the fountain pens in my front pocket or bend up my reading
glasses.

Dash is completely crushed, had to break out the climate control
pushbutton unit and drive the side back to get the glove box open (my
brother did, I'm not able!) to get my stuff out, like the spare set of
rear pads I've not gotten around to getting installed. A helpful
passerby found some long needlenose pliers (probably off the Sheckel
van) and turned the engine off, it was running about half throttle and
boiling (no radiator cap to keep the pressure off the cracked head).
The keys are about 6 inside the dash now, it's that badly crushed.
Climate control split in half and folded up, center vent crunched, what
a mess.

Front doorpost is pushed in at least 18, tire is lying over at 45
degrees or more (lower control arm not bent much if at all), door is
pushed in at least a foot. Windshield is busted, floor pan is VERY
narrow, console cover is torn up and shoved up 6 or so. I unbuckled
and climbed out the passenger side.

Other than the punch in the ribs I'm fine, got a cut from my exploded
coffee cup that flew out of my carrier bag. Cell phone still works in
spite of being thrown onto the floor under the front seat from my bag
in the right seat, haven't tried the computer yet, but the bag was
still on the front seat where I left it.

I ended up pointing straight south rolling down the median from going
straight east, no skid marks other than my tires going sideways, I
don't think he ever touched the brakes. Other driver was fine, airbags
went off, so that's good (although I'm NOT pleased at my car being
wiped). Not a good feeling to look up and see a vehicle speeding
toward you less than 6 ft away and thinking, oh s this is gonna be
bad.

Didn't even black out, didn't hit my head, didn't bang my hip, knee, or
feet.

I feel much better about my mother driving a 300 TE, as much of a pain
as it has been keeping it running nicely (idle and AC problems, finally
fixed). At least if she gets slammed she is unlikely to be hurt.

What a car! Now I gotta find another one..

Peter

I'm helping someone compose the Mercedes Story for children and she's
got me stumped on a couple of points:

Does anyone know who designed the W136 170? I'm pretty sure it would
have been Hermann Ahrens, who was design chief before and after the war,
but haven't been able to find any definitive answer online.

When did seat belts become standard in Mercedes? 1964? And is it true
that MB was the first carmaker to install them as standard equipment?
(Besides Tucker, I mean.)

Appreciate any insight,
Tom

Re: [MBZ] Brake pads: Brain picking

2007-09-16 Thread mykd1
I've learned that its a case of trial and error with brake pads. As for ceramic
vs semi metallic?its best to find what works on the car and stick with them.
Ceramic are very good, but only because they can handle extreme amounts of heat
and they cool faster. The problem is you have to get them hot to work, but
they're?not really?recommended for older cars unless you have upgraded your
brake system with rotors that will work with ceramic pads. As for semi
metallic, they're usually standard on most cars and have fairly good life span
and work well in most driving conditions. Its sometimes a case of making sure
the rest of the braking system is in good working order then?find a good oem
pad and stick with them.

Hello smart people whoever you are

I'd like to pick your brains about brake pads.

One point of view is that of Daimler Benz AG:
Don't use anything except what we say. For
me that means Jurid this or Textar that.

Another says metallic only. Accept no substitutes.
I've had metallic pads that seemed to last forever
with no problems.

Another says ceramic only. Much better.

Some of the metallic or ceramic, I forget which, are
supposed to last forever, but wear out everything
else (rotors?). Or so I think I've read or heard.

I'm thinking of a situation wherein there are new or
refinished rotors without vent holes, and reused
sound calipers. Probabably new small hardware.

What do you think? All points of view accepted.

Thanks Robert

I wouldn't say that MB interiors are that great, better than most but
far from perfect.
I'll send pictures of the dash of my 201 for proof if required. Or the
gear shifter fascia with it's sad looking wood. Or the plastic bits
falling off the side of the seats. Or the incredible shrinking door panel.
Now to my 123, it has actually stood up better than the 201 but has it's

You must be kidding, even with 360hp the 68 GTO could never go that fast.
It was a pretty quick car, but technically you take into consideration
wind drag, weight and actual gearing of the car and you have a brick on

Not a bad looking car, but that silly little story included from the
star is pure fiction. Anyone who's ever owned a '68 GTO ( present
company included ) knows that 120 is just a nice mild cruising speed,
those beasts don't even start breathing hard till around 180...that's
when it's time to use the last third of the gas pedal travel. We used to
have a lot of fun with that car out on a dry lake. 220mph+ is an
 interesting feeling :-)
If they passed a GTO at 120 it's because the guy in the goat didn't
care, not because the 6.9 is some super car.
I wonder why he included that little snippet in his ad? I guess it
didn't help him sell the thing.

I remember one that CarDriver did a few years ago where they sponsored Gale

I have a vague recollection that one of the car mags - HotRod or Car Craft type
publication - got a newer Firebird
to around 200 mph but it took a whole lot of messaging and effort. It is not as
easy as it might appear.

Isn't there some sort of on road race accross the dessert in Nevada - legal or
otherwise - where folks just drive
flat out. I think that is what the magazine was participating in.

You'd be lucky if you could get 120 out of a Cavalier with 140 hp?with the
limiter disabled.?The other reasons for limiting top speeds on most vehicles is
because of the tires. After you reach speeds of 100 mph the tires will start to
overheat quickly.

I have a chev Cav, trust me, with or without computer limiter, it won't do
140 mph or anywere near it!! They often limit top speed in really fast cars
to keep the green guys happy, or in other cars due to tire limitations. I
don't think either is an issue wiht the Cav. hee hee

Not to mention the tires. And of course the brakes were teacup sized.

A 2003-2005 Chevy Cavalier has a small, low drag body and 140hp.
Can probably do 135-140, just like a 190E 16V, but it's limited to
108 by computer. If you do a panic stop from 100, you will have
gas from vaporiing front brake pads floating the pads off the
disks before you get it stopped.

Re: [MBZ] Handguns and the law

2007-08-19 Thread mykd1
Consider the history of the 1911 .45 and its flawless performance in the
military and there isn't much out there that can compete. I managed to get my
hands on a postwar 1911 and I have to admit there is no question why it was so
popular. As a happy medium though I prefer my .40 Sig as a home defense weapon
simply because its easier to shoot and just as effective.

i'm a .45 acp lover myself, but this mystique of the miraculously
devastating .45 is all nonsense. the traditional 230 grain subsonic .45 is
a nice effective round, but it really won't knock an elephant 9 feet up into
the air. and if you shoot someone in the finger with one and he falls down,
it's probably because he's seen in the movies and thinks that's what you do
when shot. and a modern, high pressure 9mm will kill a guy just as well.

i personally like big bore guns (ask some of the kids about my .454), but
carry a .380 in real life as the bigger guns just make my pants fall down at
inopportune moments.

On 8/17/07, Robert Bigham [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

When I was being trained for familiarization with the Government .45, our
instructor told us If you shoot someone with this pistol and hit him in
 the
finger, it is going to knock him down.

He also disproved the canard that the pistol is more dangerous to an
adversary if you throw it than if you shoot it. The man could powder
small rocks 50 yards away. My class learned to shoot pretty well if I
 remember correctly.

Before the Brady Law went into effect, I felt a strange need to own a
 pistol
the feds wouldn't know about. I was undecided between a Government .45
automatic, which I thought I knew about, and a .357 Magnum revolver.

A gun store guy explained the difference thus: Suppose you were shooting
it out with someone taking cover behind the corner of a brick building.
 The
.357 Magnum will shoot through the builidng. The Government .45 will
 knock the building down.

The 9 mm has low recoil, but it is nowhere near as powerful as either the
Government .45 or the .357 Magnum.

For maximum power and recoil, try a Ruger .44 Magnum, but that is another
 story.

 Bill,

If all you are interested in is sport then you really need to consider a
Ruger MKIII. They are wonderful shooting weapons, accurate reasonably
cheap to feed because they shoot 22LR cartridges.

If you have any ideas for home defense then consider a 45ACP from one of
several manufactures. The bullet is huge (0.45 diameter) and slow and
 will
stop your intruder. You don't want to kill him, just stop him - RIGHT NOW.
And if he dies from the results of his own actions, then.

Why not a 9mm that's so popular these days? Because a 9mm will not stop a
drug crazed invader unless you hit a vital spot in home defense, you
 don't
have time to aim. You only have time to point squeeze.

had a thought on this..
Considering its a grey market 230 and the last one was imported here in 78 did
you check to see if a radiator from a US market car would fit? Off the top on

Subject: [MBZ] Radiator brands: Who can give advice?

Hello all

I need to pick your brains about radiators.

My perfect Behr round tube radiator 123 501 56 01 was destroyed by the
consequences of the acts of an idiot posing as a mechanic, but that's not
really important. Replacing the destroyed radiator is much more important.

Car is 1983 Model 123.223 230E Grey Market car. Four cylinder 2.3 liter,
100 KW output. Automatic transmission.

I shopped Rusty, and put in a quotation request a week ago, and haven't
heard anything except that the quote will be ready before long. I think I
know what that means, unfortunately. Not available. I'm used to that.
Grey market and all that.

I'm looking for a used radiator like the one that was destroyed, and I'm
looking for a new one.

I looked out in the big world, and find Behr, Nissens, noname, and Valeo
radiators that might be a suitable fitment. Width dimension is pretty
important. Not too wide - will interfere with air cleaner. Not too narrow
- fan shroud will gap at sides and not force airflow through core. Just
right
is 518 mm, wide, i.e, standard width. Height is standard 123 chassis
radiator height.

I am shy of noname radiators. Maybe I shouldn't be.

Somewhere I read a rant against Behr radiators of the 1980-85 period. Hose
nozzles break off or something like that. Flimsy. My old Behr radiator
was
perfect and worked perfectly. There couldn't have been a lot fundamentally
wrong with it. But it is history now.

I never heard of Valeo radiators except vaguely and I think associated
somehow
with Volkswagens. I never heard of Nissens radiators at all until now.

There are many things I have never heard of.

I never imagined having to roust out a radiator, although I bought a used
one
(which turns out to be wrong - too wide) on ebay, just in case I might need
it
sometime.. It's an excellent Behr radiator except it ain't the right one.
Too wide.
Interferes with air cleaner snout.

I'd like to hear anything anyone might care to share, and any advice anyone
may have.
I'm sure there's a radiator guru or expert out there somewhere.

Thank all of you.

Robert, in a liquid to air heat exchanger mode.
.

Are Becker Grand Prix radios too old to work with this technology?

True, but I was referring to the little two-seater. That's what
inspired my question.

And yes, the AMG Hammer. I remember hearing about that car years ago
on TV. Forget what show - not really a car-related show, just some
show about incredible things. It said it was the fastest production
car in the world I believe. Of course that's a broad brush. I thought
the Ford Cobra held that title. Of course I have more respect for a
car that can perform like that and still be a whole car (as in not
some light sheet metal on a tiny frame like a Cobra).

But what a killer name - AMG Hammer! I remember seeing Ken Shamrock
walking around in a Hammer Strength t-shirt. Just said Hammer on the
back. As impressive as these cars we're talking about. A bit off topic
I have strayed.

Bill:
I don't think there is much difference between a Z3 and a Miata in terms of
room for getting (climbing) in and out. If you spot a Z3 for sale, you
might stop and try climbing into it to see for yourself. The roadster I
remember being particularly difficult to contort my middle aged body into is
the S2000.

Incidently, I considered a Miata and believe it too would be a good choice.
Miata is smaller than a Z3 (or Boxter, SLC, S2000 etc), and IMHO it handles
the best - like a go cart. And I expect it requires less repair than any of
the German choices. But for my purposes, a Miata is too much like the MG's
and Triumphs I fooled around with in my youth, when I wished I could afford
a Jag E-type or a Healy 3000. My Z3 is more like those bigger, more
powerful roadsters. YMMV.

I see it this way..in most cases if the person is arrogant jerk because of the
car he drives, 9 times out of 10 he/she was that way long before they bought

Thinking that a car can change a person into a arrogant a$$ is nothing more

FWIW (not much), I used to own a BMW before I got the Mercedes diesel
bug, and I don't think I fit Clay's stereotype---I liked the Bimmer
not for its prestige value but for the same reason I like other
European cars, for its quirky design, personality, safety, and high
fun-to-drive levels compared to just about anything else I could have
had for the same price.

The one I had was a 1989 E30 chassis 325iX (for those not familiar
with BMW taxonomy, that's a subcompact sedan with a 2.5 liter six and
four-wheel-drive). I felt like quality-wise it was a notch below an
'80s Mercedes, but inconsistently so---the paint held up better than
most 123s I've seen on the road, and the interior leather was very
tough, but the plastics used were definitely of lower quality, and it
had constant electrical problems which I assume were due to inferior
insulation and connectors.

Just like an M-B, the engineering was a puzzling mix of genius (e.g.
the semi-trailing-arm suspension which made for fantastic handling,
the perfect placement of the instruments and controls) and stupidity
(the front left halfshaft that went through the oil pan).

I still am tempted by '80s BMWs all the time. If I found a cherry '87
or '88 535is for sale nearby, red with tan leather and a 5-speed, I'd
have my wallet out in a heartbeat.

Luther,

Any style torque wrench will give you accurate results, its all a matter of
preference. Most of the old school guys prefer the beam style, but most of the
newer dial and click style are very accurate. As for brand, I was never fond of
the Snap-On just because its way over priced. You can find just as good quality
in a Proto, Craftsman or even a Mac.

Re: [MBZ] OT '78 VW Rabbit questions

2007-05-27 Thread mykd1

Hey Kevin

The Rabbit from 75 to 84 used several different alternators made by bosch,
motorola and valeo,
I think for the 78 you may only have a couple of choices depending on the
engine, if 1.5 or 1.6.  I think for most of them it just depends on the correct
pully length for belt alignment

Well, we've had our hands on the free '78 Rabbit for a whole week now. This
as the one that had been sitting for a couple years due to a bad
lternator. The alternator has been removed which, I believe, could be the
ource of our problem. We installed new battery cables, but nothing is
orking in the car, no accessories, lights, turn signals, nada. It will run
hen gas is put into the throttle body, but it can only be started by
umping the solenoid. I'm guessing that the alt completes the circuits, and
verything will work normally once the CORRECT alternator is installed and
onnected. This is a problem since the original one isn't around to match
p to buy the correct one. These old, German cars just seem to call my

Most of the issues with the VW Golf as with any of the VW's is the cam seals
leaking. The tdi seems to be fairly reliable for the most part. I have never

Hello fellow MB-ers. I have an opportunity to pick one up for nothing since
the owner and his father want it gone from the driveway. I believe it's a
'78 which would mean that it's a German-made Rabbit not the US or Mexican
models since it has round headlights and the horizontally slotted grill.
The story is that the alt gave out and it wasn't thought of as being worth
fixing. The car has been sitting for 2 or three years, so the plan is to
set it up with a known good battery, fresh fuel and filters, and see what
happens. I'm not sure if it needs oil put into the cylinders for added
lubrication for the first few revs before oil pressure can be established,
but it's easy enough to do. It's straight and has an OK interior, but it
needs a MAJOR MAJOR cleanup. If it works out, it will be Papa's run around
town car. I believe it has a 4 speed manny tranny which could be quite fun.

It only vibrates when the wheels are rolling, i.e. the driveshaft is turning.
My thinking is that the shaft flutters under no-load conditions and

The vibration is really all over, but can be felt at the steering wheel.

i wondered about this when i saw it a month ago, but since you brought
it up,... ;-*

criminy,...very little special about these bikes except the logo,
and most of what actually *is* special isn't good.

couldn't see any real detail on the upscale 'racing' bike, but at
least it gets Campagnolo componentry; if it's the top-of-the-line Record
group and the frame is at least decent, the bike's not out of the range
of normal for extreme high-end bikes... but there's still nothing
special about it. most modern leading-tech carbon fiber bikes are made
in a monocoque process now anyway; the tube-to-tube process touted in
this article was long abandoned by most (bicycling) industry leaders.

the other models are completely ridiculous; the frames are nothing
special, and the componentry is much too low on the scale to be worth
anything like what they're asking for them.
and what's with the accessories on the Trekking model? did anyone
really need the extra complexity of a sensor-activated lighting system,
or was a reliable switch just not sexy enough? while dynamos and
battery-backup lights are cool, there's nothing new about them either;
i've got some that are decades old already. (Sanyo Dynapower, VeloLux,
etc.,...)
the rack especially looks cheesy; exactly like the low-end
adjustable generic models we've seen for decades, not even solid units
that are made to fit.
and the brakes; like the racks, made by Topeak fer crissakes...?!
cycle computers; this one looks like it has all the features that
were state-of-the-art in the early '80s.

OK, enough; i need to go ride a *real' bike. ;-)

cheers!

The double roller timing chain that came out in mid-83 is a plus. The
earlier single roller chain is the one that tends to explode if you
are lucky, you only bend 2 vaves.

If you are in the States, you need to know that the the 126 body 380's
 were all grey market cars.

 Tom Hargrave

Tom- you might be thinking of the 280s; I believe all of those were
grey market, as were any 500s other than the 85 500sel.

Re: [MBZ] 3.8L 126?

2007-01-25 Thread mykd1
I'm not aware of many gray market 380's getting to the states. If by some
possiblility any 380's made it to the states they probably had better timing
chains and gears to make up for the higher HP figures of the euro cars. I
remember when the 380 was introduced here, it was a really sharp looking car.
The big problem was Mercedes hastily introduced it into the states because of
the tougher emission laws and the 3.8 V8 was so bogged down it could barely get
out of its own way. The HP figures for the US spec was 155 hp@ 5500 and 196
ft.lbs@ 4800. Barely enough to move almost 2 tons of car. I don't think
Mercedes upgraded the timing chains or gears until later.. maybe 83 or so

Picked up a gallon of Zerex G-05 at my local Car Quest today. Had to ask for
it,
they only had Zerex Dex-Cool replacement on the shelf. Both bottles have a nice
chart on the back showing what coolant you should use on your car.

Its not for my Mercedes though, I need to change the coolant in my Polaris
snowmobile and figured if G-05 was such great aluminium corrosion resistance
for
a Mercedes then the Polaris would surely benefit.
$13.50 a gallon. I didn't think that was so bad in my little town of 7,000

Thanks for everyones help, You guys rock. Turns out it was just a bad plug (
I
hope ) . Check engine light was reset. Drove it about 30 miles at both high and
slow speeds. If there is still a problem, generally how long will it take for
the check engine light to come back on? Thanks again.

Re: [MBZ] OT Passat Jetta in the cold

2007-01-16 Thread mykd1
I suppose when it comes down to it, no matter what you own poor maintainence
and bad fuel would halt any car or truck. Winter is harsh on everything and if
you think just filling the tank will get you by when its cold just bet on being
one of those being hauled away or towed when something goes bad.

Saw another one last night on the way home. On the back of a flatbed, being
hauled away - nice Audi.

Don't think the fuel is an issue anymore. Gas stations have been required to
upgrade tanks to prevent leakage so
not near as much water in the tanks as there once was. Also think suppliers add
things in the winter to prevent
freezeup. Can remember giving my 77 Mercury a regular dose of methyl hydrate
with each fill to prevent freezing gas
lines but have not put any in vehicles in many years. Became concerned that it
might hurt something in fuel
injected vehicles.

I think that for cold weather it is hard to beat good old north american
vehicles - especially trucks.

I re-read the original post.

I think that the reasoning for most cars being off the road is people
unprepared
with either crappy tires or water
in their gas.
Fuel injected cars today will tolerate much worse gas than years ago while
still
performing reasonably well so I
bet people don't use drygas like they used to.
An iced gas line will stop a car totally dead with no regard to how good a
winter car it is.

Which reminds me, as its supposed to get really cold tonight (2F tomorrow if
weather.com is to be believed) I think
I'll put some iso alcohol in the vehicles tonight.

Seriously though I can see his point, the reason why MB was perceived as
being so good was that the competition was so bad. The only real competition
MB used to have was BMW but now even VW are building limos. AUDI used to be
a very spartan vehicle but are now building some very nice cars. Volvo used
to be like IKEA, you have to be Swedish to like the look of their
stuff(although we did buy some big beer glasses and a man size door mat from
them but that is all I liked in IKEA) but now Volvo are building some nice
looking machinery.

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Quality vs Toyota

2007-01-14 Thread mykd1
I noticed in the most recent years Toyota has taken a long hard look at the
quality of their US built cars. I know someone who was a dedicated carrier for
the Toyota plant in Indiana and he mentioned that they often send more
shipments of parts and supplies back then they accept. He mentioned that many
times they will look into the truck trailers and if something wasn't wrapped,
stacked or even loaded properly they slam the doors and send it back refused
without even examining the product. He said alot of the drivers got frustrated
because they were so picky and had to return with the same load. A few times
they even had to wait for hours if there was any delivery that looked iffy
before they could leave. Sometimes they kept it and somethimes they sent it
back.

took the car to the Toyota dealer and gave the service manager a list of
items that were causing me concern [can't remember the list anymore] his
first comment was that mine must be a US manufactured car. He then checked
the VIN and confirmed that it did indeed come from a plant here. I assume
US/Japan plants used the same parts, or parts made here using the same specs
[anybody know about that?], so the difference was where it was put together.
I'd not want to start a thread on work habits [willingness to do a

seems to have been different depending mostly on where it was put together.

Somebody who knows more than me should point out the difference in
Japanese QC vs German QC. The Germans accept a certain amount of bad
cars, and try like heck to catch them and fix them before shipping
them, while the Japanese see any bad car as a problem in the process,
and find a way to fix the process so that problem just doesn't happen
anymore. Have I got that right?

Maybe more of an asian thing rather than just Japanese, 20 years ago when we
had some contract manufacturing done in Taiwan I was sent over to look at
the initial production. As the designing engineer I was able to look at
what they'd made. (Which was, at that time, exactly what we would have
built locally.) They had a pile of bad units stacked to one side, and I was
going through them one by one. I'm sure they were worried that there was a
systematic problem, but each one was just normal (in my book) fallout.
Every one had something different wrong with it, and nothing caused me any
particular worry.

I vividly remember one instance where I determined that there was a bad PAL
device, and according to my practice I just popped it out of its socket and
smashed it, so that a bad one wouldn't be mistaken for good. A minor
commotion ensued, one of their engineers grabbed it up and ran off with it,
carrying it like it was a valuable and delicate item. Or a sick pet.

I don't think I'd want to have been whomever was responsible for programming
it. I'm sure they wanted to chase down _exactly_ what was wrong with it to
see if there was some part of the process to fix.

I kind of doubt that China, however, is exhibiting this type of trait. In
my mind they are more cowboys than that, and in a way more like us. But I
could be wrong.

Similar differences in quality were/are noted in Mexican vs. German
assembled Volkswagens, and also to the US assembled ones (Rabbits I
think) when they had a plant in Westmoreland PA. For example I have
been told if you are going to buy a Golf, get the GTI they are still
made in Germany (I don't know if that's still true, btw). You would
*think* the same parts, assembly processes, training, and standards
would be used in all locations, yet somehow there are differences in
the results.

Mike

As long as the compression amongst all the cylinders is within a couple of
percent you should be fine. If you see one cylinder that is significantly
different redo the test and proceed with furthur diagnosis. Also you may
want to do a wet and dry test.

Also consider doing a leak down test instead of a compression test, it will
tell you more about the condition of the engine and what is wrong.
