Some of the Audi models do list both because the rear on some models was the split race/bearing, but the front was sealed. I think most of them from the mid 80's had the sealed front, but the back is split. It might be best if you give the year and the model of your Audi before you decide which bearing you need. I wouldn't be able to license it here as it would neve pass the safety test. Wonder how mouldy the interior is. CT gets rain as I recall. AZ maybe but CT is a bit cold and wet for no roof at all. Hey Brian, ?Its not really much of a big deal except where the spare is *front or back* If it's on the?front you might want to swap it to the back. The spare, because its at 100% tread, will want to pull as you go around corners so you will definately feel this. Hey Peter, ?Its good to hear you are ok and the car did its job. If you really think about it, its sort of sad to know that everything about a Mercedes leads up to this point. They're designed to protect you in?a crash. Hit the front door as I drove across the highway doing about 60, wasn't watching the road (duh). I got away with some glass embedded in my left arm (gotta go have that dug out in the next day or to, I think) and some very sore ribs. Didn't break the fountain pens in my front pocket or bend up my reading glasses. Dash is completely crushed, had to break out the climate control pushbutton unit and drive the side back to get the glove box open (my brother did, I'm not able!) to get my stuff out, like the spare set of rear pads I've not gotten around to getting installed. A helpful passerby found some long needlenose pliers (probably off the Sheckel van) and turned the engine off, it was running about half throttle and boiling (no radiator cap to keep the pressure off the cracked head). The keys are about 6 inside the dash now, it's that badly crushed. Climate control split in half and folded up, center vent crunched, what a mess. Front doorpost is pushed in at least 18, tire is lying over at 45 degrees or more (lower control arm not bent much if at all), door is pushed in at least a foot. Windshield is busted, floor pan is VERY narrow, console cover is torn up and shoved up 6 or so. I unbuckled and climbed out the passenger side. Other than the punch in the ribs I'm fine, got a cut from my exploded coffee cup that flew out of my carrier bag. Cell phone still works in spite of being thrown onto the floor under the front seat from my bag in the right seat, haven't tried the computer yet, but the bag was still on the front seat where I left it. I ended up pointing straight south rolling down the median from going straight east, no skid marks other than my tires going sideways, I don't think he ever touched the brakes. Other driver was fine, airbags went off, so that's good (although I'm NOT pleased at my car being wiped). Not a good feeling to look up and see a vehicle speeding toward you less than 6 ft away and thinking, oh s this is gonna be bad. Didn't even black out, didn't hit my head, didn't bang my hip, knee, or feet. I feel much better about my mother driving a 300 TE, as much of a pain as it has been keeping it running nicely (idle and AC problems, finally fixed). At least if she gets slammed she is unlikely to be hurt. What a car! Now I gotta find another one.. Re: [MBZ] Brake pads: Brain picking
I've learned that its a case of trial and error with brake pads. As for ceramic vs semi metallic?its best to find what works on the car and stick with them. Ceramic are very good, but only because they can handle extreme amounts of heat and they cool faster. The problem is you have to get them hot to work, but they're?not really?recommended for older cars unless you have upgraded your brake system with rotors that will work with ceramic pads. As for semi metallic, they're usually standard on most cars and have fairly good life span and work well in most driving conditions. Its sometimes a case of making sure the rest of the braking system is in good working order then?find a good oem pad and stick with them. One point of view is that of Daimler Benz AG: Don't use anything except what we say. For me that means Jurid this or Textar that. Another says metallic only. Accept no substitutes. I've had metallic pads that seemed to last forever with no problems. Another says ceramic only. Much better. Some of the metallic or ceramic, I forget which, are supposed to last forever, but wear out everything else (rotors?). Or so I think I've read or heard. I'm thinking of a situation wherein there are new or refinished rotors without vent holes, and reused sound calipers. Probabably new small hardware. What do you think? All points of view accepted. Consider the history of the 1911 .45 and its flawless performance in the military and there isn't much out there that can compete. I was undecided between a Government .45 automatic, which I thought I knew about, and a .357 Magnum revolver. A gun store guy explained the difference thus: Suppose you were shooting it out with someone taking cover behind the corner of a brick building. The .357 Magnum will shoot through the builidng. The Government .45 will knock the building down. The 9 mm has low recoil, but it is nowhere near as powerful as either the Government .45 or the .357 Magnum. Hello all I need to pick your brains about radiators. My perfect Behr round tube radiator 123 501 56 01 was destroyed by the consequences of the acts of an idiot posing as a mechanic, but that's not really important. Replacing the destroyed radiator is much more important. Car is 1983 Model 123.223 230E Grey Market car. Four cylinder 2.3 liter, 100 KW output. Automatic transmission. I shopped Rusty, and put in a quotation request a week ago, and haven't heard anything except that the quote will be ready before long. I think I know what that means, unfortunately. Not available. I'm used to that. Grey market and all that. I'm looking for a used radiator like the one that was destroyed, and I'm looking for a new one. I looked out in the big world, and find Behr, Nissens, noname, and Valeo radiators that might be a suitable fitment. Width dimension is pretty important. Not too wide - will interfere with air cleaner. Not too narrow - fan shroud will gap at sides and not force airflow through core. Just right is 518 mm, wide, i.e, standard width. Height is standard 123 chassis radiator height. I am shy of noname radiators. Maybe I shouldn't be. Somewhere I read a rant against Behr radiators of the 1980-85 period. Hose nozzles break off or something like that. Flimsy. My old Behr radiator was perfect and worked perfectly. There couldn't have been a lot fundamentally wrong with it. But it is history now. I never heard of Valeo radiators except vaguely and I think associated somehow with Volkswagens. I never heard of Nissens radiators at all until now. There are many things I have never heard of. I never imagined having to roust out a radiator, although I bought a used one (which turns out to be wrong - too wide) on ebay, just in case I might need it sometime.. It's an excellent Behr radiator except it ain't the right one. Too wide. Interferes with air cleaner snout. I'd like to hear anything anyone might care to share, and any advice anyone may have. I'm sure there's a radiator guru or expert out there somewhere. Thank all of you. The one I had was a 1989 E30 chassis 325iX (for those not familiar with BMW taxonomy, that's a subcompact sedan with a 2.5 liter six and four-wheel-drive). I felt like quality-wise it was a notch below an '80s Mercedes, but inconsistently so---the paint held up better than most 123s I've seen on the road, and the interior leather was very tough, but the plastics used were definitely of lower quality, and it had constant electrical problems which I assume were due to inferior insulation and connectors. Just like an M-B, the engineering was a puzzling mix of genius (e.g. the semi-trailing-arm suspension which made for fantastic handling, the perfect placement of the instruments and controls) and stupidity (the front left halfshaft that went through the oil pan). I still am tempted by '80s BMWs all the time. If I found a cherry '87 or '88 535is for sale nearby, red with tan leather and a 5-speed, I'd have my wallet out in a heartbeat. Most of the issues with the VW Golf as with any of the VW's is the cam seals leaking. The tdi seems to be fairly reliable for the most part. The story is that the alt gave out and it wasn't thought of as being worth fixing. The car has been sitting for 2 or three years, so the plan is to set it up with a known good battery, fresh fuel and filters, and see what happens. I'm not sure if it needs oil put into the cylinders for added lubrication for the first few revs before oil pressure can be established, but it's easy enough to do. It's straight and has an OK interior, but it needs a MAJOR MAJOR cleanup. If it works out, it will be Papa's run around town car. I believe it has a 4 speed manny tranny which could be quite fun. Re: [MBZ] 3.8L 126?
I'm not aware of many gray market 380's getting to the states. If by some possiblility any 380's made it to the states they probably had better timing chains and gears to make up for the higher HP figures of the euro cars. I remember when the 380 was introduced here, it was a really sharp looking car. The big problem was Mercedes hastily introduced it into the states because of the tougher emission laws and the 3.8 V8 was so bogged down it could barely get out of its own way. The HP figures for the US spec was 155 hp@ 5500 and 196 ft.lbs@ 4800. Barely enough to move almost 2 tons of car. Fuel injected cars today will tolerate much worse gas than years ago while still performing reasonably well so I bet people don't use drygas like they used to. An iced gas line will stop a car totally dead with no regard to how good a winter car it is. Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Quality vs Toyota
I noticed in the most recent years Toyota has taken a long hard look at the quality of their US built cars. I know someone who was a dedicated carrier for the Toyota plant in Indiana and he mentioned that they often send more shipments of parts and supplies back then they accept. He mentioned that many times they will look into the truck trailers and if something wasn't wrapped, stacked or even loaded properly they slam the doors and send it back refused without even examining the product. He said alot of the drivers got frustrated because they were so picky and had to return with the same load. A few times they even had to wait for hours if there was any delivery that looked iffy before they could leave. Sometimes they kept it and somethimes they sent it back. The Germans accept a certain amount of bad cars, and try like heck to catch them and fix them before shipping them, while the Japanese see any bad car as a problem in the process, and find a way to fix the process so that problem just doesn't happen anymore. Have I got that right? Maybe more of an asian thing rather than just Japanese, 20 years ago when we had some contract manufacturing done in Taiwan I was sent over to look at the initial production. As the designing engineer I was able to look at what they'd made. (Which was, at that time, exactly what we would have built locally.) They had a pile of bad units stacked to one side, and I was going through them one by one. I'm sure they were worried that there was a systematic problem, but each one was just normal (in my book) fallout. Every one had something different wrong with it, and nothing caused me any particular worry. I vividly remember one instance where I determined that there was a bad PAL device, and according to my practice I just popped it out of its socket and smashed it, so that a bad one wouldn't be mistaken for good. A minor commotion ensued, one of their engineers grabbed it up and ran off with it, carrying it like it was a valuable and delicate item. Or a sick pet. I don't think I'd want to have been whomever was responsible for programming it. I'm sure they wanted to chase down _exactly_ what was wrong with it to see if there was some part of the process to fix. I kind of doubt that China, however, is exhibiting this type of trait. In my mind they are more cowboys than that, and in a way more like us.
