for him. It was one of the options I suggested, as being a plumber, he really
needs something that he can toss his tools and gear into.I have begun the
search. Lots and lots of 2008-2010 Escapes in the market right now, but darned
near every one is at a dealer, dang it. Mostly Mom & Pop places, too.I patently
refuse to pay dealer fees, as they’re nothing more than profit being added onto
the cost. I’ve messaged a couple of big dealers who had some nice vehicles, and
they have dealer fees of $800!!Nope.Interestingly, nearly nothing on CL, lots
on FB Marketplace, mostly M&P dealers, and some on Autotrader. Any other venues
that I’m missing? Seems like there are very few of these being offered in

List Cc: Dan Penoff Subject: [MBZ] OT
- Kitchen Cabinets Yeah, this is wy off topic, but I’m reaching to find
anyone with some experience in this area…First:I am an accomplished woodworker
who has built and installed kitchen cabinets of my own design and making in
both my and other’s homes. These were solid hardwood raised panel cabinets
built with European hardware of the highest quality. In other words, I have a
pretty good idea what makes a good cabinet and what makes a fair cabinet. We are
preparing to replace the kitchen cabinets in the home we recently purchased.
It’s got the original builder’s quality spec grade cabinets that were put in
when the home was built in the late 1990s. I’m not making any significant
changes and will, for the most part, retain the same layout. Other than a few
changes, like replacing a desk with more cabinets and installing an over the
oven/range microwave, the new cabinets will be the same dimensionally. This is
good because they’re all common sizes. I’ll also be having granite countertops
installed on top of them, but that’s a whole ‘nother job.I do not have the
resources to build my own. Period. The basement full of woodworking equipment I
had when living in the GWN is long gone and can’t be replicated. This resigns
me to consumer grade cabinets, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Here’s what
I’m finding:RTA cabinets - essentially knocked-down cabinets with the finished
face frames assembled but the cabinet itself not. These come flat and have to
be assembled by the installer. The less costly way to go, as you’re providing
some of the labor and they’re easier and less costly to ship.Preassembled
cabinets - just what they sound like - the cabinets and face frames are
assembled and shipped, ready to install. More expensive than RTA, but labor
saving. There are loads and loads of online retailers selling cabinets, both RTA
and preassembled. Prices are very similar. Specs are much the same as are
designs. So the question begs, which way to go (RTA vs. preassembled) and what
makes one retailer better than the other? I swear these guys must be using all
the same tooling or manufacturer, as the variations in designs are minimal, if
that. In other words, everyone has the same products for the most part, from
what it seems. My expectations are low. I know short of hiring a custom
cabinetmaker I’m not going to have the quality of cabinets I once made, but I’m
OK with that. And I don’t want to invest a ton of money in this, either, which
is another reason for foregoing a custom cabinetmaker. So has anyone out there
bought cabinets online, if so what type, from whom and are you happy with
them?Thanks,-D___http://www.okiebenz.comTo

drive the ‘yota that arrived a few weeks back.  The boy, home for the holidays
from university has been piloting.  The vehicle seems overly complex with all
the gimcracks and gee-gaws available.I pulled the owner manuals to see what all
I could learn about how to operate this car.  The books are surely written by
lawyers whose native language is not engrish.  Almost all the functions are
written in quasi-legal CYA phrasing that absolves manufacturer of complicity in
things going wrong.   The most mindboggling was the triple speak about how use
of your cell phone would screw up functionality of most of the vehicle.  It
could break the ignition sequence, door and alarm, window function, radio,
wipers, cruise control and lighting, steering, and anything else connected to
the CAN bus.   If the car had all the “safety feature upgrades” those would be
rendered nonfunctional by just being in the car.  Thankfully the car does not
have active cruise, lane avoidance, radar evading parking assist, cross traffic
blind spot lurking, or all the other silliness that seems to be rendered
inoperative by actually turning the car on.  Most are broken by having  cell
service, tinted glass, or any solid metal object larger than a rapper’s gold

seems to indicate that the only way to make the car survive is to have the
dealer do any and all work, including refueling, detailing and washing the car,
operating the in dash entertainment system, and reading the dash display. On
another note,  my presence has been noted in AK, as the snow is melting away
from my internal climate changing prestidigitation.  In the past 60 hours I

- Fun with Water Heaters You’re talking out your butt and you don’t know this
real estate market.Properties like my house are under contract around here in
three days on average unless there’s something seriously wrong with the place.
No one is going to demand a new roof when one was just done less than 18 months
ago. Nor are they going to expect/demand a new heat pump when the one in the
house is under two years old. Same with the water heater. That’s crazy talk.
There are institutional investors in the wings with cash who will also come out
of the woodwork to grab homes like this to add to their rental portfolio. With
an average home age of 20 years in this area, if these items haven’t been
addressed yet it’s huge ding on the value of the home and will seriously affect
the marketability. With all of them done the house is good for another 20
years.I don’t know what you’re smoking, but you need to cut it out.-D> On Dec

I'd spent the week in DC for a class. In the airport coming home I started to
not feel good. Nearly home I realized I needed the ER. 9 years ago it was just
angina, this time it's a heart attack. People got very excited.I'm in Worcester
now with 3 new stents. Stenting is much more painful when you've had a heart
attack, I don't advise it.
Anyhow I'm still alive, put me on the injured reserve list with Rich and Gerry.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Compost from road kill (Mitch Haley)

2018-12-09 Thread tyee165 via Mercedes
My carbed version wasn't bad on the highway either. However, as the
transmission got old it required effort to keep it in overdrive. When it
dropped into 3rd the rpm rose and the mileage dropped. Also noisy and rougher
at 3K plus rpm. In 4th around 2K rpm. Had to be very light on the gas pedal or
it would shift down and proved difficult to get it back into 4th at higher
speeds.

The 88 had throttle body injection, so it was actually pretty good on fuel,

Re: [MBZ] Series 5 F series Ford pickups -the anti-Prius

2018-12-09 Thread tyee165 via Mercedes
That vintage will be the twin I beam front suspension. Difficult to align if it
gets out of whack. Have to tie it down and use a jack to bend the I beam and
know how much to bend it. The ends of the I beams have something like a
kingpin. This would be 2 wheel drive. Cannot recall but think the 4 wheel drive
had some form of independant suspension on the front too. My father had a 2 WD
new in 68 and kept it a long time. Came with a 352 V8 which he swapped out
later for a 240 inline 6. He did not like the mileage on the V8. Had a 3 speed
manual trans with 3 on the tree. Made great mileage with the 6 as it was geared
for the 8 but lacked power when pulling away from a stop esp if loaded. The box
rusted out which finished it off.The Chevy of similar vintage may be a better
truck but if you are tall, I think there is more room in the cab of the Ford. I
have had a 67 short box Chevy and a 68 long box in the past. Both were good
trucks.

Good basic pickup.   As long as it is not rusted away, and the engine
runs, then you might wanna check out the front end for worn ball joints,
tie rods, LCA bushings, etc. (Assuming 2wd)   If 4 WD, there are 4
bearings in the steering knuckles, if memory serves.  They are pretty
easy to put new bearings in.  There are shims to adjust the preload, but
as long as you are careful, and put them all back the same way, you
should not need to check/adjust them.

Check all the u joints and if it has CV joints, check them too.  The CV
joints were expensive in 1972, and probably are now also.

Plan on putting volvo seats in it unless you are only gonna drive it
under an hour at a time.

That is the first step.

Then, the most effective reaction is to sound the horn.  And not a
polite "toot, toot" but push the button and keep pushing until the
risk is over.

At the same time, slow down.  And don't keep watching the deer you
spotted.  Very often there are more around and any that you see
you have already seen and the _unseen_ ones are the most
surprising.

This is based on many, many miles of driving in rural deer
country.  So while I have impacted many deer,  the one that got
this wagon is the only contact in the last decade or so that I
have used the horn.  There have been at least a dozen situations
that could have easily included impact.  Of course, I can't say
what would have really happened.

In urban and suburban, the horn sounding may be an issue.  Use at
your own risk. *smiles*

missing? I wiggled all the fuses. The lights all come on the panel and dim
slightly when I turn it to start position, so I think the switch is ok, and
obviously it has juice from the batry. I was under there messing around, so
could have knocked something loose, but it started fine a few times in the
driveway before it didnt.

Thoughts?

Thanks

rust, if that is the problem.  If the lever doed not wiggle the rack at all,
try to see if you can move it a thousandth or 2 (or 5) manually, with a finger
or screwdriver, but DON"T force it!   Next step would be to hook a hose to the
vacuum shutoff and suck (or alternately; suck then blow)  on it, and see it
that wiggles the lever at all.  If not, remove the vacuum actuator, then see if
the rack advances when the footfeed is floored. One extremely odd thing that
happened is a broken governor that slammed the rack to the off position, but
that happened as soon as the car started.   I don't think that is the case
here, because the shutoff lever is stuck down, but the point is, sometimes
unheard of things happen.Max Dillon via Mercedes wrote:> Jack&  Tim;>> Gentle

I believe a full 55 gal barrel might exceed it's structural limits, but
only because the rim of the barrel would be the only contact area vs the
weight load.
It might work if you set the barrel on a piece of plywood to distribute the
load beyond the rim of the barrel.

With a load of dirt or rock, the weight is distributed across a much wider
area [although perhaps the same weight] against the "tarp" which slides
across the bed of the truck as you wind the handle.

I've used one for landscape rock... worked really well.
