Yup - mine was a 1951 Beetle, it was mostly black, chipping away to
 reveal
yellow. green, blue, etc. colors underneath. I don't know what color
 it was
originally. I think I bought it in 1965. it burned/leaked a quart of
 oil a
week, so I used the drained 50W oil from Dad's Cessna 195 which held
 5
gallons of oil that was changed every 25 hours.
The split rear window had been replaced with one piece of glass,
 though it
did still have the semaphore turn signal arms in the rear door posts.

the boss etc.At the end of the school year they laid off my manager
which was a shame, the guy was great. The rest of us refused to kiss
the ring and were not re-hired the next year. Unfortunately for them
we had already penetrated the network and could do what we wanted.
We knew they were monitoring our email so we instituted strict
security protocols that included encrypting everything with PGP
(Pretty Good Privacy). The encryption scheme would take 1 line of
text
and turn it into a paragraph or a paragraph into a page etc. So the
amount of traffic stayed the same but the volume of each message
 jumped dramatically.
It wasn't long before the 5 ringleaders (of which I was the least
technical but most scheming) were hauled in to account for ourselves.
They rolled out "We know you're up to something, we don't know what
but you better tell us or else!" We kept our mouths shut knowing
there
wasn't anything they could do to us, even if they could decrypt our
messages it was all mundane stuff like "What time is dinner?" any
actual scheming we did in person, off campus.
When I graduated the president of the college shook my hand for a

 laughed, it was great.

Saturday and yesterday I finished the reseal of the compressor,
installed
that, vacuumed the system for 30 minutes, and then put a small amount
of
propane / butane blend and then pressurized up to 150 psi with CO2.
Checked around with the sniffer for leaks, and noted a leak at the
compressor shaft seal and small leak (still) from the evaporator.

The shaft seal leaking was expected, typically they need to run-in a
bit to
fully seat. I had one more can of leak sealer to address the
evaporator.

Bled off the test charge, installed a new receiver / dryer, vacuum
again
for thirty minutes, then attempted to charge the system with r134.
First
can goes in liquid, engine off, once that is mostly into the system,
right
the can and then start the engine so compressor can suck in more
juice.
Now I've got intermittent compressor engagement. KLIMA finally
decided it
was done playing. I'm not sure if the relay is bad, or an input is
bad.
Spent some time futzing with it, no joy, so I took the bypass relay
and
wiring that I made up for The White Whale KLIMA and installed that
into
this '95 E300. Lost more time, I was too hasty and pulled out the
pins
from the White Whale KLIMA socket before I noted which went where
(only
three pins are used), so I had to search around for that info. Found
it on
 Peach Parts.

Finally got the KLIMA bypass going, and proceeded with charging the
system,
then installed the leak sealer. Ran the AC for another 20 plus
minutes per
the leak sealer instructions, and then checked again for leaks with
my
sniffer. No leaks detected anywhere, so I think I've finally got this
one
sorted. I do need to set up the transmission kick-down jumper, to
restore
 that function.

I have a $30 Ebay sniffer, works pretty good. With the AC running and
fan
blowing air, I get sniffer alarm at both center and side vents, and
also
very low alarm at the expansion valve which is right at the end of
the
evaporator so might be gas coming up that way from leaking evap
instead of
 o-rings at the expansion valve.

I know the evap is leaking, that is why I tried the sealer. Maybe
other
leaks like old hoses, I'm going to fix what I know to be wrong now
and then
see if there are any other leaks.

[MBZ] OT - A CAROLINA COUNTRY BOY REMEMBERS - THE PIE DIPPER

2015-05-07 Thread Wilton Strickland via Mercedes
Yep, another one - not many more:

THE PIE DIPPER

By Wilton Strickland

My brother, W. B., immediately after graduating from high school at 18 in
January 1946, went to work full time to support the family, including
himself, Daddy, Mama, Joyce, Jake (a cousin living with us) and me. He
provided this major support for several years. His first job was at
Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Shops in Rocky Mount. He worked there only
about a week cutting up old steam locomotives with an acetylene torch. He
then went to Rocky Mount Mills, where he worked for many years as a carding
machine operator.

An early evening in late November of ‘47, W. B. asked me, then 13, to go to
Rocky Mount with him and help him tow home a car that he had bought. He had
paid about $100 for the car, a 1929 or 30 Model A Ford that would not run.
We attached a tow chain without a “stiffener” bar between the two vehicles
and off we went - W. B. driving the tow vehicle, the family’s ’37 Ford, and
I, driving the Model A. Most of the floor in the Model A was missing.
Temperature that night was in the mid to high 20’s F. Needless to say, I
got VERY cold during the 14-mile tow. I was quite proud of my ability to
brake (using what little there was) at the appropriate time to keep the tow
chain reasonably taut and not hit the rear of the tow vehicle. I began to
worry about possible frostbite, though I’m not sure I knew the term then -
I just knew that I felt that I was freezing! I was extremely glad to get
home, “thawed-out” by the heater in the living room, did my school homework
& finally went to bed.

About 1 AM, however, W. B. awakened me to inform me that we were taking the
car back to the seller. By then the outside temperature was even lower. I
put on additional clothing, including two pairs of socks, two pairs of
pants, gloves, wrapped something around my head & face, etc., but the
return trip in the “airy” Model A was still a test of cold endurance and an
excellent training capsule for “chill factor,” another term that I’m sure I
did not know then. We arrived at the seller’s home about 2 AM. I waited,
shivering in the cold tow car, also with no heater but at least an intact
floor, while W. B. convinced the seller to return the money he had paid for
the car. I could hear them arguing - not loudly - in the dark, but I could
not see them. Finally, W. B. returned to the car with his money, unhooked
the tow chain, and we returned home, both much wiser about buying cars and
I much wiser about driving and about being cold and preparing for it.
(Years later, I put this “cold weather” knowledge to good use in Nebraska,
the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, California mountains and in Greenland.)

Late one afternoon in 1948, as W. B arrived home from work, I was sitting
at my usual place at one end of the dining room table doing my school
homework. Near the other end of the table was a beautiful chocolate pie
that Mama had removed from the oven and placed there only a few minutes
before. As W. B. came through the dining room, he saw the pie and rushed to
get a plate and a knife to cut himself a piece of it before Mama could
return to the room from elsewhere in the house. I saw what he was about to
do and said to him, “You’d better not - it’s still hot - she’ll be upset.”
There was no stopping him, though, and he quickly made two cuts through the
meringue to outline a “normal” slice or wedge of pie. When he tried to lift
the slice out, however, it did not come out intact. The knife he was using
to lift the wedge was not being very effective at removing the entire
piece. He quickly got a large spoon (a tablespoon) to improve the
efficiency of his “slice” lifting. With each dip of the spoon, I could see
the meringue on the rest of the pie settle slightly as the still hot
filling flowed from the rest of the pie into the cavity where his slice had
been. He had made several dips and was still trying to remove “his” entire
slice when Mama returned.

She jumped him, “Well, I do declare, W. B., can’t you wait a little while
for supper? The pie is not even cool - it’s not ready, yet! If you’re going
to dip it all out in the space of one slice, you may as well take the whole
pie! Can’t you leave some for somebody else? Besides, if you’re not
careful, you’ll “ruin” your supper!” (She always said that to us when she
thought we were getting a snack too close to mealtime, especially if it
were a desert-type snack. ‘Don't know of a supper that I ever ruined,
though.)

W. B. proceeded to enjoy his early “piece” of pie as I laughed at how he
was unable to clean out the space where his slice had been. It must not
have ruined his supper, though, ‘cause I noticed that he not only enjoyed
that, but when the time came, he also enjoyed another piece of the somewhat
thinner pie with the rest of us.

When the ‘49 Ford was introduced in June 1948, the dealers had a drawing to
attract viewers. First prize in the drawing was a chance to purchase the
first car of the wi

Re: [MBZ] Tucson CL 220

2009-04-05 Thread Wilton Strickland
That's the first MB model that I looked at and began to seriously think
about getting one. It was April, 1971, in Raleigh, NC; coulda bought it for
$7100; 'bought Chrysler sta wagn for $5100 instead. 'Sold the Chrysler 7
years later in CA for $750. Which was better buy? The 220D probably
wouldn't have done so well in the MI UP for 5 winters, though. Finally
bought a 240D for $17000 in Goldsboro, NC, in Oct 78. That's what sort of
a "smart" buyer I am. 'Course, in '71, I didn't have the $7100, but in
'78, I did have the $17000. ;<)))

No, the door swings inward; the strip I put across inside, bottom of door
pushes up against the rounded part of the threshold (as shown on left in

I REALLY enjoyed my '80 240D and felt terrible when it was totaled at 16

Would probably still have it otherwise.

Why are you arguing about it? Just know that if the key is on the wiper will
self park so don't move it which basically means don't work on the wiper if
the key is on...

I like changing the fuses, it made my teeth whiter and my breath fresher
too.

The doc burned a little hole in my nail with a magic burning tool. I should
have written the name down, it was pretty slick, popped the hole almost
instantly. I told him I've done it before just twiddling a 1/16" drill bit
between my fingers for way less than the co-pay I had to make today. He did
order a couple xrays so I guess I got something for my money. On the way out
the staff stuffed my pockets with free samples of ibuprofen which seems to
cut the pain better than asprin..

A dremel with a little drill bit will take care of that nail, save the

Re: [MBZ] Wiper replacement catastrophe

2009-04-01 Thread Wilton Strickland
Yeah, the hook blade for cutting chute shroud lines stayed open and ready
for quick access and use while hanging/descending in a tangled chute. The
long string attached to the ring on the end of the knife handle and the top
of the pocket helped keep up with the knife. One of mine, the one with
quarter inch or so broken off tip of the switchblade, is here in my desk
drawer. 'Don't remember how the tip was broken off.

BTW, on Dec 31, 1972, the last time I left U-Tapao, Thailand, immediately
after flying several B-52 missions to Hanoi, I was standing in line at the
passenger terminal awaiting baggage inspection before boarding (as a
passenger) an Air Force KC-135 (Boeing 707) for an overnight flight to Guam,
where we were to pick up a B-52 on the second of January and fly it to
Wichita, KS. One of the other Air Force captains with me was picking at a
fingernail problem with a LITTLE BITTY Swiss Army knife. The staff sergeant
(E-5) inspector said to the captain, "Excuse me, Sir, you'll have to put
that knife (the little fingernail knife) in your baggage somewhere so you
can't get to it, or I'll have to confiscate it." I laughed incredulously as
I stepped out from behind the other captain and said, "What about these
switchblade knives right here on our left, inner thighs?" His response:
"Oh, that's OK, you may keep those. That's part of your survival
equipment." We 3 captains had a hearty laugh at the absurdity of it all.

'Coupla days later, on Guam, we were on the way out to the BUFF we were
gonna fly to Wichita, and had to stop by "customs," etc., again, for baggage
inspection. Another staff sergeant met us at the bus with his drug sniffer
dog. The sergeant stepped up in the bus and said, "You'll need to bring all
of your bags inside and open them so I can go through every item,
item-by-item. I replied, "You gonna work us over again like the guy did
yesterday in Thailand?" His response: "Oh, did you justy come out of
Thailand?" I replied, "Yes, they really went through our stuff in detail,
too." (Actually, only 3 of us had just come out of Thailand; the other 2
with us on the crew were already waiting for us on Guam.) The inspector
then said, "Well, just let me run through a coupla questions for ya, then.
Do you have any knives or guns, or anything like that?" I replied, "Yes,
we're each wearing a .38 caliber revolver right here under our left arms, we
each have a 5-inch switchblade knife right here on our left, inner thighs,
there's a .22 rifle in every seat pack and survival kit on the airplane, and
there are three hatchets in holsters mounted on the crew compartment walls.
We're flying the airplane; what're we gonna do? Hijack ourselves?" The
inspector said, while backing out of the bus, "Oh, ya'll have a nice
flight."

Re: [MBZ] vacuum coolant filler

2009-03-30 Thread Wilton Strickland
BTW, in 1970, I built a vacuum system for IBM in Research Triangle Park, NC,
using this principle. The electric motor-operated vacuum system that I used
originally burned out the motor brushes in 2 weeks. Meanwhile, they were
dumping much excess compressed air overboard/outside. I quickly adapted
only a small portion of their excess compressed air though a venturi to
provide appropriate pickup vacuum at 10 punch machines that punched little
holes in circuit cards. The vacuum system I built had no additional moving
parts and collected the little pieces punched and trimmed from the cards.
My system "ran" 24/7.

Re: [MBZ] 205 vs 195 size tires for 1983 W123 300TD wagon?

2009-03-26 Thread Wilton Strickland
Why did you have a blowout? Obvious physical damage to the tire or a tire
defect? If it was physical damage causing the blowout, and you can "trust"
the remaining three not to blow for no obvious reason, and the spare is an
equally good tire of the same size with good tread, continue to enjoy them.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Stupid

2009-03-26 Thread Wilton Strickland
In a cooling system, the "inside" heat exchanger is the evaporator, and the
"outside" heat exchanger is the condenser. When a heat pump switches modes
and become a heating system, the "inside" heat exchanger becomes the
condenser, and the "outside" heat exchanger becomes the evaporator.

I was at Advance Auto the other day getting a replacement caliper for my
240D, and happened to poke around for oil. They didn't have any 5w40 in the
oil section but did have it in the Diesel oil section along with 15w40
etc...

I don't shop at Wally's for anything. The extra pennies per quart are worth
it for me for never going to Wallys...

I was at Wal-Mart last night, actually, looking for M1 for a couple of
my other cars, and their stock and variety are both GREATLY reduced.

All they had in the 5 quart bottles was 5w30. Hope it's a temporary
shortage.

[MBZ] $2 sucker again

2009-03-24 Thread Wilton Strickland
'Used my $2 sucker this afternoon to change oil in son's '07 R320CDI. That
engine takes/holds 9.5 qts. of oil, but the filter cartridge is only about
the size of a small Campbell soup can. Filter is right up front on driver
side and extremely easy to reach, but we had a helluva time unscrewing the
cartridge holder. Somebody really cranked down on it. Top of the black
plastic cartridge holder is about 3 inches in dia. We were a bit afraid we
may crush it or crack it with one of those filter wrenches that squeezes
harder as you put more torque on it. 'Didn't put it back quite as tight.

In his listing the seller says "it could be fuse or relay" to which I
replied "If it were the fuse you'd replace it because its cheap and easy so
its probably the fan" I'd forgotten this was a 30a fuse...

I was brutal in the email I sent him, I'm surprised he responded.

Re: [MBZ] '87 300D?

2009-03-22 Thread Wilton Strickland
$9700 for my showroom-condition one with 82 kmi in Aug '04. Paint,
interior, rubber door/window seals like new - spent most of it's life in
darkened garage in Winston-Salem, NC, 'til I bought it. I've replaced
alternator (pulley came off), serp belt, belt tensioner shock and, as you
know, evaporator. Still no dings, scratches, rubs, cracks, etc., and has
orig head at 112 kmi. Drives and rides MIGHTY good, but not as good as my
126.

BTW, heater/cooling fan can be replaced from front side under wiper
assembly - don't have to do the evapectomy operation for just the fan,
though that may come later, anyway.

Anybody got an opinion on the '87 300D? First year of the 124 here right?
Guy on Craig's has one, its been on for several weeks now. Needs a heater
fan and probably a belt tensioner (says it makes a squeak sometimes, might
just be a bad belt I guess) otherwise supposed to be real good.
He's asking $5000 obo but admits he knows nothing about the car and was
given it or something, says somebody told him to ask that much.

Anything I should look for specifically other than rust rust rust?
