Re: [MBZ] Anyone need what appears to be a brand new Betamax?

2024-05-05 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Well, it was better quality than VHS…

Funny story: I had the whole collection of “Green Acres” on VHS, the commercial
version, not ones I had recorded. I tried selling them for some time and got no
takers.

The youngest son was working at the Grand Canyon for the NPS at the time, doing
rim to rim to rim hikes over his nine day shift. There are bunkhouses for the
NPS employees and contractors in various locations in the Canyon, with limited
power and water, very basic. That, and anything that got there had to be packed
in by someone or on a mule.

He mentioned the ancient books and VHS tapes with old CRT TVs being present, so
when he was home between shifts one time, I gave him the collection of Green
Acres tapes which packed down to a bunkhouse on the North Kaibab trail.

So my collection of Green Acres tapes now live in perpetuity in an NPS
bunkhouse…

2024-05-05 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
The guy who turned me on to Mercedes had a 220D and lived in the Baltimore, MD
area. If Potomac German Auto hadn’t been nearby, the car would have expired
years earlier. I once went with him to a Saturday “special” at PGM where you
could pay a fixed amount for everything you could carry out. He took this 10’
piece of steel pipe with us. I was puzzled until I saw him load up four doors
with the window frames hung over the pipe and the pipe placed across his
shoulders. This was pretty much an annual event for him in keeping the car on
the road. I truly believe you could hear it rust if you stood close to it and
listened.

And it was brown.

Re: [MBZ] OT: 4-way switch troubleshooting

2024-05-04 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Our garage was built with 2 3-way switches: one by the outside door to the
back, and one by the main opening. Nothing by the door into the house,
and with the garage door opener you basically were _never_ conveniently
near a switch. When I added on to the garage there was another door added,
also nowhere near a switch.

With considerable difficulty I added two more switches for the two interior
doors
we use, and both had to be 4-ways. (Adding wall boxes and getting them wired
in was quite a chore.) Those are the only two that get used, and of course they
are not cheap should they wear out. So far, though, there have been no
failures.
Pushing 20 years now.

My thought was the 4-way switch, too, but I had no rationale for that

[MBZ] OT: 4-way switch troubleshooting

2024-05-04 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I have a 4-way switch configuration in the basement (lights can be turned on or
off from three locations). Been working fine for years.

Suddenly it's acting strange. With the lights on, switch 1 and switch 2 will
turn the lights off, switch 3 will not. If I understand correctly, that
indicates that 3 is the bad switch.

However, if switch 3 is in the "up" position the other two switches don't work
(lights remain on, except briefly as the switch is toggled). There is no brief
cutout as switch 3 is toggled.

I am thinking switch 3 is the bad one, does that sound right?

Re: [MBZ] W211 E500 more air suspension questions

2024-05-01 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
FCP Euro is listing only the rebuilt struts. RockAuto has both rebuilt and new.

Here's the Arnott page about them, but I can't say that it's particularly
enlightening.

https://www.arnottindustries.com/all-struts-shocks/

I guess what they say about the OE cores "they eventually wear out and can no
longer be rebuilt" makes some sense. They say theirs are "Engineered &
assembled in the USA"

I compared the specifications, and they look the same except that the rebuilt
struts list "Adjustable Damping - Yes" and the new ones say No.

FCP Euro lifetime warranties everything, so I'll probably buy the rebuilts from
them despite the higher price vs. RockAuto. Basically would end up paying about
$250 more for the lifetime warranty.

Arnott apparently does buy cores but they list the 03-09 E-Class (W211) fronts
at only $50. Also if the car already has aftermarket struts (not sure yet) they
would not buy those.

So the professionals are saying rebuilt Arnott rather than “new” as they are
made in China. Rebuilts are OE units and completely gone through.

Does that more definitively indicate something leaking in the strut? I

I have not found leaks anywhere using the soapy water test.

People are telling me that both the rebuilt and “new” Arnotts have the same
warranty (2 years?) If that’s the case, unless the core charge is something
spectacular, it would seem that the new ones would be the best choice. That, or
do the maths on the rebuilt ones with core and shipping charges through FCP so
you get their lifetime warranty. See what Arnott is doing for cores, that is,
are they purchasing cores outright? If so, you could go with new from FCP and
sell off the cores to offset your costs.

Re: [MBZ] W211 E500 more air suspension questions

2024-05-01 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Apparently Arnott now sells "new" and "remanufactured" struts.

FCP Euro sells the rebuilt struts. Rock Auto has both.

The new ones are described as:

This new assembly replaces the O.E. strut and features a new custom
tuned shock absorber calibrated to provide an outstanding ride and
performance. The Arnott strut includes a new air bladder from
ContiTech protected by an aluminum can along with a CNC machined top
mount made from aircraft quality aluminum. This new air strut comes
pre-assembled for easy installation and includes Arnott's long
lasting seals, bump stop, heavy duty crimping rings, and connector
valve along with a dust boot to protect the strut.

The rebuilts are:

This Arnott rebuilt OE Mercedes-Benz air strut features a new
ContiTech air spring bladder along with a new CNC-machined aluminum
upper and lower piston.

They are only a few dollars different; the rebuilds do have a core charge and
require returning the old parts.

I wonder if the shops you heard from were talking about the "new" Arnott struts
or their rebuilds?

Re: [MBZ] W211 E500 more air suspension questions

2024-05-01 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
RockAuto also has these by "FCS" for $365.

https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=11387517=1426429=7556=1387

I probably sound like I'm cheaping out, and if it were a newer car I'd not
hesitate to just put new Bilsteins in it but the car is 20 years old. I'm
taking more of a "keep it on the road" approach with it. Yet I want to get
something that's not going to blow out in 18 months and especially not leave me
on the side of the road needing a tow.

I should probably try to see what brand it has on it now, whether they are the
factory originals or have already been replaced.

I'm thinking that the manager was selling cars for X+Y and embezzling
the Y whilst putting the X on the paperwork.

My guess is that if proven, he should be charged with embezzlement and
assessed criminal damages of Y or Y+interest.

Asking for a full refund of several years' earned wages is pie in the

Lawsuit accuses former manager at SC Porsche dealership of taking
 bribes for cars

David Wren dw...@postandcourier.com
3–4 minutes

The owner of a Porsche automobile dealership in Charleston is suing
its former sales manager over allegations that he required customers
to make under-the-table payments totaling hundreds of thousands of
dollars to secure the highly sought after vehicles they wanted to buy.

Baker Motor Co., owner of the Porsche Charleston dealership
 on Savannah Highway in West
Ashley, is accusing James Marino of pocketing bribes for high-demand
cars since at least 2022, according to a lawsuit filed in Charleston
County court
.

Marino has not filed a response to the lawsuit, and he could not be
reached for comment. A lawyer for Baker Motor Co. did not immediately
respond to an email seeking further information.

Marino had been sales manager at the dealership for six years before
being terminated in March after the alleged bribery scheme was
discovered, according to the lawsuit.

The dealership "specializes in selling high-end, luxury Porsche
automobiles," the lawsuit states, adding the vehicles "are in high
demand, and there are often numerous potential buyers competing for
them."

A report by Road & Track

states the timeline for ordering a Porsche can be as little as three
months, but "the waitlist for models like the 718 generation Cayman or
even a 992 generation 911 Carrera S can be years long."

"With nearly every Porsche model in high demand, build allocations are
highly sought after and the models that aren't spoken for upon dealer
arrival become highly competitive assets," the magazine stated.

The lawsuit states that as sales manager, "Marino had the final say in
determining which potential buyer would be allowed to purchase these
high-demand automobiles."

Baker Motor says in court documents that Marino's actions were
"intentional, willful, wanton, reckless and malicious." The company
wants a judge to force Marino to repay all of the money he made from
the alleged scheme as well as all of the wages and benefits he
received during his time at the dealership. Baker Motor is also asking
for unspecified punitive damages and legal fees.

Re: [MBZ] Interesting but I think price is too high

2024-04-29 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I believe I have related this story before about a tornado in maybe 1974
that went through Indiana and did huge amounts of damage.

I belonged to the flying club at Purdue and there was a deal if you
washed and waxed an airplane you could get a couple hours of flying time
for free.  I corralled a buddy who also lived in Fort Wayne, we were HS
friends and classmates and he would go home with me occasionally, to
come out and help me do the plane.  The club had its planes at this
little private airport a bit NE of WLafayette kinda out in the country.
We were out there one afternoon, I think it was a Sunday doing the
plane, had washed it outside then pushed it into the hangar to wax it
out of the sun.  It was a gorgeous spring afternoon.

After awhile maybe around 3ish I noticed the sky was getting a little
weird, kind of a yellow glow, wind had died down and the insects had
quit making bug noises.  The guy who owned the airport lived in a little
house there and had a coupla dogs that were acting kinda weird.  I told
my buddy we should probably think about going back to campus as I had
seen this before and had an idea of what was coming.  I had a car at the
time for a little while that my parents had let me take to school for
some reason I forget and had driven it to the airport.  Anyway, we got
in the car and put on the radio and the announcers were all screaming
about storms and tornadoes so we said we had made a good call. Got about
halfway back to campus and it started raining so hard we couldn't even
see out of the windshield.  I pulled over best I could to what I thought
was the side of the road and stopped. Wind was incredible and we both
thought we were in the middle of a tornado, the radio was saying there
was one going through and it was bad.  We were both about as scared as
20yos can be because it was pretty rough.

After a few minutes the rain and wind stopped and the storm passed on by
and sun came out, it was weird.  We got back to campus and of course
everyone in the dorm was talking about it.  There were a couple of
high-rise dorms maybe 1/4-1/2 mile away from ours that you could see,
they were all saying the tornado was coming right at one of them but
passed over at the last second and went up into the cloud then dropped
down again and headed NE.  Next few days the news was full of reports
about the storm and tornado and damaged it had caused for like
20-30miles.  It was crazy.

Next weekend I got my buddy and we took the plane up for a reconnoiter.
Flew to the SW a bit and found where the ground path had started then
followed it for the whole path and it was 20-30miles.  Stayed pretty low
so we could see the damage on the ground.  It had the whole deal -- 2x4s
through phone poles, the path going between a house and shed or garage
like a plow had torn up the ground but left everything either side
completely intact.  The craziest thing was this steel truss bridge over
the Wabash river had been picked up off its pilings and moved like 100ft
downstream  and dropped intact in the river.

I remembered really bad tornadoes, Palm Sunday in probably 1965 or 1966
or so that had even worse devastation. My parents went on a drive to
oogle the damage and that made an impression on me.  This one was right
up there.

A couple years later kind of the same situation, one spring afternoon it
was getting a little weird, tornadoes were around, radio was saying
there was one to the west.  I was living in this apartment complex at
the time, my window faced west, I was looking out and shonuff about
5-10miles away I could see one dancing from a cloud.  I kept an eye on
it for a bit but it went on north of where I was and I don't think it
actually did much damage anywhere.  Scary enough though.

We have them here on the Island too, I think a few years back associated
with one of the hurricanes I had a small one hit right in front of the
house in the woods, a few days later I noticed a bunch of small trees
down in a swirl pattern.  A bit later I checked out the recorded radar
path and it looked like it probably did come right through but here the
strength was not registering so I guess it was not too strong.  It was
winding and raining pretty hard at the time in the hurricane so did not
hear or see it directly.

Be vigilant!

Re: [MBZ] Interesting but I think price is too high

2024-04-29 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I recall when a tornado went through just south of our first house in Indiana.
As you drove down SR 37 you could see it’s path through the forests and fields.
Like a lawn mower went through and just cleared a path.

And yes, tonadoes *do* sound like really loud freight trains.
