I recall going once to the ACD Days parade with my parents maybe late 60s. It was amazing watching the guys drive those cars like they were meant to be driven. There was one corner where they would jump on the throttle and make lots of noise, tire smoke, screeching, rubber patches and all manner of hoonery. The cars were very cool. A friend who lived near me near Boston was from Auburn. Her grandfather had the McIntyre Motor Company there and built trucks and hauling vehicles back in the early 1900s. She had all kinds of memorabilia and records and documents and photos in a big trunk. I told her to donate it to the museum and i think at some point she did. --FT Sent from iFōn > On Dec 23, 2022, at 4:29 PM, dan penoff.com via Mercedes > wrote: > > ACD museum is cool. Re: [MBZ] Perhaps not prepared for cold weather
Yup. I use mine often when I'm teaching. My "office" is our enclosed porch which we don't heat. We have hydronic heat and while there are radiators out there they're shut off. I don't want to heat it all the time and don't want them full of water that freezes so I just keep them empty. The days that I teach (when it's cold) I've got one of those electric oil filled heaters that I turn on a couple hours in advance. Then I light an Aladdin (or my old B) lamp for auxiliary heat. Even when it's very cold those two are plenty. I usually turn the electric down by lunch time. -Curt On Friday, December 23, 2022 at 11:00:54 AM EST, Jim Cathey wrote: They're definitely more fussy than a pressure lamp, that's for sure. I was already all Volkswagen by that point. I suspect the VE engine in my old Jetta would have tolerated some gasoline. I was considering kerosene as an additive but the Power Service was handy. Angie's Golf is a pump duse engine which wants no gasoline. My current (2015) Jetta is a common rail engine and specifies ABSOLUTELY no gasoline at all. I've got one Aladdin that will maybe match a 40w bulb for a little while. Running them on high always gets me a carboned mantle. If I really want to read I've got a kerosene Coleman lamp (model 152) ready to go. They're a little annoying to live with in a house that doesn't have a real porch. You want to light and shut them down outside to avoid that atomized kerosene smell and the open flame of the alcohol preheat. They'll put out serious light though. Heat too. -Curt On Friday, December 23, 2022 at 10:51:27 AM EST, Jim Cathey wrote: Having an Aladdin or two around is pretty handy. You can read without eyestrain with one of those, for example. Re: [MBZ] Perhaps not prepared for cold weather
Several years ago, maybe 2016, we had a really cold snap in December or January and apparently they hadn't been treating the diesel as well as they should. Everybody I know was having trouble with gelled fuel. Fortunately I had a half gallon of power service in the grooming machine so I snagged that for our cars. My Jetta had it really bad, it took a long time to clear up. Angie's Golf was effected but cleared up with just a few ounces of juice. Very quickly there was no anti-gel to be had in the state. A buddy was trucking to New Jersey for something so we got him to bring back a case of Power Service for the snowmobile club. Since then I've always kept a quart on hand... That reminds me, I need to treat the Tucker. I had terrible trouble with water in the fuel on that machine last year. It hasn't been cold enough yet to tell if this year will be a repeat. -Curt On Thursday, December 22, 2022 at 01:15:04 PM EST, Allan Streib via Mercedes wrote: Diesel is winterized at the distributor starting in about October I think. We're having really weird weather today. Right now it's 40+F headed for a daytime high of 50 and raining. Tonight it's supposed to get to a low of 9F. I've got a pot roast in the slow cooker, in a little bit I'll go start the woodstove. I've got about a 4 day supply of wood in the house. I like to get the stove good and hot before the power goes out. I assume the power is going to go out when the rain freezes... Fortunately last week I picked up 2 1/2 gallons of kerosene. I've got 5 kerosene lamps, we can just about heat the house with those alone if we really needed to although it'd stink pretty bad. Each one burns about a pint in 8 hours. We've got a good CO detector too which is important using wick lamps. -Curt On Thursday, December 22, 2022 at 01:07:39 PM EST, Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes wrote: We are having sudden unprecedented cold here. [MBZ] Perhaps not prepared for cold weather
We are having sudden unprecedented cold here. It’s currently 1 and will be about 2-3 all night till tomorrow. It’s -20 with windchill. Wife took the truck to town a little while ago but it’s so cold I’m wondering if the diesels should have received does diesel treatment, or if there is a danger I’d fuel gelling. I didn’t even think about it because we typically do not deal with that here.
