What size does the ferrule need to be?
My Pex crimper has a die for 3/8" I think.
I know there is one smaller than the 1/2" that I have never used.

I thought y'all noreasters there were either feisty, terse, 
curmudgeonly or some other form of social misfits.  (Just teasin)


Best wishes for your event!  Too bad Lt don went AWOL.  I'd a liked 
to see his Q be an annual thing.  Not as much list member density 
around him though.


Maybe next year you can take it on the road and venture further south 
and west to allow more "nice" folks time to get there.

Wow!  $300 for the crimper for small hose?  We need to get HF to make 
in China for $39 with a starter set of ferrules.  None of these are 
as good as the Grainger one.  It had more sizes and was about $125 in 
1990 or so.


But it is wonderful to have one. 40-50 years ago a lot of FLAPS and 
hose shops had them and it was not expensive to have the ends crimped 
on.  Now, thanks to the walton mentality, it is all about selling you 
a $15 hose in place of a buck hose and a buck fitting and providing 
the service of crimping on the fitting with a ferrule.

Yes,  the ferrule is just a permanent clamp that won't skin your 
knuckles (in theory)


Take it off, replace the hose and put on a clamp.  The fitting is all 
that is important.

on some new hose.

I had to do this on the original (and awesome) fuel hose on my ponton two
weeks ago:

Grainger USED to have a ferrule crimper that would do fuel hose, air 
hose up to garden hose.  You had to buy each size ferrule separately. 
I had one in Hawaii that I used to make up air hoses to the correct 
length for each application, and sometimes fix a water hose.


I wish I had brought it along.  Grainger does not sell them and I 
can't find any place that does.  It is almost a "must have" around a 
food plant.  I did notice the local shop that makes up hoses also has 
one (manual) in addition to the hydraulic one they use for hydraulic 
hoses and larger low pressure hoses.


it has an upper and lower half with several different sizes, and a 
handle that squeezes the two crimper halves together to crimp the 
ferrule.


One of them would be very handy for someone like you Jaime, or kleb 
that has a lot of cars.  Mine are functional only, so I don't care if 
they have SS worm clamps.  For me it is a lot easier to open the worm 
clamp to change the hose the second or third time.  (one car I have 
had for almost 45 years, another for 20 etc.)

Got exhaust all welded up. Will install tomorrow. Today's snag was 
an incorrect fuel line sent to me by classic center. They will 
overnight the correct one for tomorrow. Still some hope for making 
the Q on Saturday!


Herr Welding GURU:

Don't sweat the fuel line.   Cut off, grind off, or pull apart the 
ferrule on the old hose, then remove the hose.  Take the hose to 
FLAPS and get the right length and type of hose and a hose clamp. 
Put it together.  Run the car.


I have pulled apart the ferrules with grinder, dremel, vice grips and 
a screwdriver, pliers and a screwdriver, 2 screwdrivers...well, you 
get the idea.  a spiral grind with an electric tool is fast and easy. 
THen you just peel it open and pull off the hose and ferrule.

My only currently "running" Benz is the pagoda so that's what I plan 
on taking to the Q on Saturday. When I parked it last October, I 
knew in advance that it would need a tune up- distributor cap, 
rotor, points, condenser so I purchased the parts last fall to have 
ready to install when I got it going again. I also knew in advance 
that the car would need a new exhaust.


So yesterday, I start it up after almost one full year in 
hibernation and I notice a massive fuel leak. Turns out the braided 
rubber hose with a fitting on one end which feeds fuel from the 
electric fuel pump to the engine has rotted. It's only 8 yrs old! I 
order the part from classic center and turn my attention to the 
exhaust.


I currently don't have the $1000 in my budget for a new stainless 
exhaust so I decide to repair the old one. Both pipes are rotted 
through where they attach to the back of the muffler so I figure I'd 
unclamp the muffler, cut out the rotted sections of pipe, weld it 
back together and re-install.


I crawl under the car and come to the grim realization that the 
entire exhaust is welded together in one piece!  So I unbolt the 
headers from the manifold- not fun. While I'm there I notice that a 
clamp on a coolant hose has rusted all the way through! Wow, the 
hose was attached by friction and goo alone! I could have blown the 
engine on the way to the Q!


Anyway, while trying to negotiate the exhaust out from under the car 
I realize that it will not come out in one piece so, I cut one of 
the headers off and slide it out. The plan is to reattach with some 
sort of clamp system.


As of now I cut out the rotted pipes and welded back to muffler.

Hope no more snags!

This is when a lift would be nice to have.  My '95 sedan front exhaust pipe 
also cannot be removed from under the car without a lift.

The White Whale ('87 wagon) seems to have developed an exhaust leak in the last 
couple weeks, I need to make some time to diagnose that and either replace the 
rusty components or patch.  Lowes has a muffler patching tape with an 
advertisement I could not resist, I may try that.

I'm sure you'll feel better driving a car that isn't trying to kill you all the 
time...
I'll be VWing it to the Q. Right now the plan is to drive the '05 Golf, its got 
a slightly dragging brake which seems to be getting better the more I drive it. 
I'd love to find time to jack it up and be sure which brake it is, I think its 
left rear but not 100% sure, none are terribly hot but it makes a noise at low 
speed. I should just do all 4 so I know they're good...
Barring that I'll bring the Jetta, its been doing well although the tinworm 
makes it look scabby.
