Re: [MBZ] Pretty 1989 Jaguar XJS on BAT

2024-07-25 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
This system came out while I was in trade school. Not much had trickled down to
us about it, as it wa just ocming out in new cars, but we got some examples
loaned to us from the GM regional office.

It was amazing for the time, but all we could think about when we saw it was to
wonder how easily it could be adapted/retrofitted to a carbureted engine.

Kind of like HEI ignition systems, but those were a far better idea and better
executed, too.

parts times six, plus delivery time lapse of times 7.
Bently / Rolls are not production line cars but built one at a time [in

compared to high volume production..
Not a Marque for the faint of wallet..

With its 4.3 l V-6, it got about 15 mpg.

What kind of fuel mileage would a 350 get?

Is it a situation like the two Willys Utility wagons I owned in Colorado,
where the one with the Ford 302 V-8 got much better mileage and had more
power than the one with the Hurrican in-line 6?

In 1989, it was a SBC, not even a LT-1.
For the last 25 years or so the new ones have been LS series, and a
great improvement, with the exception of the cylinder deactivation
models and bad valve trains.

But, if I had a 1989 Chevy, would I just throw a junkyard 350 in it, or
would I computerize it and upgrade to an LS something with a modern

I'm thinking that even at 60% of the MPG the 350 is the economical
choice.

I found one that sold.

Sold for $410,000

They made 460 Aces with Bristol engines, so the Ace-Bristol is more rare

Re: [MBZ] Pretty 1989 Jaguar XJS on BAT

2024-07-24 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Vice Grip garage hilariously dropped a Hemi 5.7l into a square body Chevy.
Apparently there is a kit.

I think the Hemi 5.7 is a better engine than the 5.3 ls. It certainly makes
more horse power and torque in stock form.

Re: [MBZ] SBCs

2024-07-24 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I was thinking the same - there’s got to be hundreds of builders out there
offering SBC 350 crate engines for all sorts of applications. Dropping a 350
SBC in a Jag was a pretty common thing back in the day. I never did it, but I
saw cars it had been done on to varying degrees of success. I even recall a
machinist havig quite the sideline making bell housing adapter plates for them.

That being typed, I have decided that if I spend more than $6k or up on a

2024-07-23 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I recommend a PPI from a trusted mechanic before purchasing a used
Mercedes. If the tech finds any flaws those can serve as bargaining chips
to reduce the cost to you - more than the cost of the PPI.

If it’s not something new/late model, you just have to do your due diligence
(research, talk to others, look at ones for sale even if you’re not interested
in that particular car) so you’re as well-informed as possible. Provenance
plays big in the process, too, I believe.

It’s a used car. There will always be “clunkers” no matter how good a job you
do with your part.

That said, by doing the work up front, you tip the scales in your favor. But
that’s not absolute, either. Stuff happens, and when/if it does, you just have
to assess the situation as best as possible and make hard decisions, if
necessary.

2024-07-23 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Too many issues for a later model car that you’ll have limited ability to
resolve on your own. That is, I suspect there are things wrong with this that
will require a competent indy or the stealer to sort out. I’m always leery of
“mechanic’s specials” as they typically have things wrong with them that your
average mechanic doesn’t want to touch or it would be too expensive to resolve.
Electrical gremlins fall into this category, making any work often charged at
time and materials - you can’t flat rate electrical troubleshooting.

I’m sure you’re feeling pressured to find something, but take your time, the
right car will show up.

Not that well equipped. No rear moonroof, no rear recliner seats, not 4matic.

Lowish miles something of a plus, might be ok at ~$12k or so. The ask is

Show up with $5k of dead presidents in hand and I’ll bet they’ll talk.

Being a fuel injected model, you couldn’t ask for more. This is a pretty
bulletproof setup once running, but if there are injection system issues it’s
going to cost some $$ to get it running again.

Re: [MBZ] GL450 or GL550

2024-07-22 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I have a 2012 GL450 with 285kmi. Engine runs fine although there’s a code for
an intake flap actuator that doesn’t seem to affect anything. Torque converter
clutches are juddering but I ignore it mostly. Front end is pretty much shot.
Good tow beast. Paid $4k, might find one with fewer miles and sell this one on.

722.9 transmission can be a problem if CP or ISM fails; otherwise, it’s a Benz
with concomitant needs.

Re: [MBZ] 617 oil pan gasket

2024-07-22 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
On the MB oil pan in question, If you have a carpenter's level [metal on
would be best] lay it along the bolt line on each side and sight along the
contact line between the pan and the level.. The level will be machined to
within a couple thousands of flat and if the pan is warped, you will see a
gap where the level and the pan do not align and gauge how distorted it may
be.

Re: [MBZ] 617 oil pan gasket

2024-07-22 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I replaced the pan gasket on my 1952 Farmall Super M last summer. That uses a
nice thick cork gasket which will take up a lot of slop but the pan had been
bashed into something, or possibly several somethings, causing the mating
surface to not be even close to flat.

I spent about an hour laying the pan on a (mostly) flat surface and
prying/bashing on it to get it as flat as possible. Then I used a thin coating
of RTV to glue the gasket to the pan. When that had mostly setup before I added
another thin coat of RTV to the engine side of the gasket and hoisted it into
position for the install.

The machine still marks its territory but where I had previously been adding
about a quart of makeup oil every time I used the machine it now needs maybe a
pint every other year.

I would expect a 617 pan to be able to tolerate some straightening...

Re: [MBZ] OT sitting for about 35 years found hidden in a garage 1959 Jaguar mark 9, $4, 500

2024-07-21 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Actually, like older MBs, there are still a lot of parts being made, albeit
reproductions.

I have always been an electrical guy, so the electrical systems weren’t that
daunting to me, at least they never seemed to be. That, and when I went through
a car all of the connections would get checked and cleaned/replaced whatever,
to ensure their (future) integrity.

Yes, there were electrical connections and cables in places you would never
think of putting them on a car, especially with engineers who lived in a
climate like the British Isles. For those there was grease, lots of grease.
Messy, for sure, but it could do a heck of a job keeping fasteners and
terminals dry and corrosion-free for the most part.

That said, when I wrenched for a living, even in that short time, I fixed stuff
as if I would be the next person to see it.

50s and 60s Jags were a hoot to drive when set up and running properly, and
could easily blow a lot of Detroit muscle car iron off the road when the
opportunity presented itself (complete hearsay, of course!)

My absolute favourite was the XJ140, a coupe that had the same 3.8l engine as I
recall. That thing could outrun a well-equipped police car of the day easily.
People would be next to you at a light in their Cutlass or big Detroit iron
looking at the “cute little foreign car” and a few seconds later they would be
in your dust.

Fun cars, but sometimes maddening. I think the one engineering thing I hated
the most was a right angle cable drive that was used to run both the speedo and
tach (they each had their own cable and both used the stupid 90 degree gear
drive thingy.) I don’t think I ever drove a vintage Jag in which both the
speedo and tach worked at the same time.

Given the interest in these things from collectors and restorers I would
think that the Brits might have modern repro parts and wiring harnesses
and such for them.  Might not be cheap, but if available...  You can
basically build a E-type from aftermarket parts so there is a whole

It’s got the 3.8l OHC inline six, which was actually a pretty robust engine.
I’ve rebuilt several of these (engines) and if you take the supporting systems
that go with them (especially electrical!) out of the equation they are good
engines.

The Mark 9 was sort of a LWB version of smaller models as I recall. Never seen
one in the flesh, but I’ve seen and worked on a lot of its smaller cousins.

There is actually a fair amount of room in the last row, I wouldn't fit
but kids and smaller folks could do OK.  I keep it folded down for more
cargo space but even with them up there is a fair amount of space to
haul stuff.  It's a X164 chassis, is basically all the same bits as a
W164 ML but larger.

This one is like 20min from my buddy's shop, he can probably get it
towed there and deal with it.  Figures his mother would like it and
given he knows how to work on them for $1k or less it's kind of a no-brainer
