Re: [MBZ] W123 300TD needs RR brake caliper
The caliper diameter has to suit the master cylinder and vacuum booster. I have been running two different rear calipers on my wagon for 20 years now. They recently got fried when the master cylinder failed, so we rebuilt them. Unfortunately I failed to get the w126 master to suit my late w126 front brakes, so the pedal is a bit harder now than stock. But the rears seem to work fine. Re: [MBZ] W123 300TD needs RR brake caliper
It's probably to handle the additional weight in the rear - more weight means it needs more braking power. If you don't load up the rear, the sedan calipers would most likely be fine, and better than no rear brakes! Re: [MBZ] W123 300TD needs RR brake caliper
I saw somewhere that he retired or left the CC or something. Does the EPC cover older 123s? Go to that and look up the part number for your wagon and for sedans and see if they are different. In any case a caliper is about the easiest thing to swap out on a 123, if you can't chase down an original just get a reman from AA, put it on, and drive the car. If it craps out get another one. --FT On 12/7/21 11:54 AM, Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes wrote: My only concern is that my indie tech (who has owned and repaired 123 diesels for decades) thinks that the RR caliper for the wagon differs from that of the sedan. The numbers start with 201 that is for 190E or D. Maybe some extra searching would help? Re: [MBZ] W123 300TD needs RR brake caliper
That's always the debate I have. FLAPS parts are cheap and have good warranties, and I've never had much hassle exchanging parts, but it's a PITA to install two or three until you finally get a good one. That happened to me with a brake master cylinder. I've had pretty good luck with parts at NAPA but they tend to cost a bit more. I do notice that most of the indy shops use NAPA for parts though, so that says something (they want to minimize warranty re-repairs). OEM is always best. Try FCPEuro? I also don't think you should mix brands of calipers on left/right sides. If you have ATE calipers, don't replace just one side with a Bendix.
