I'm not really sure if it is any different than the solvent based
Weldwood
stuff. I surely wouldn't get the water based stuff because in my
experience

it just is not as good.

No water-based crap for me. The genuine gooey stuff. I was just
wondering if it's the same or not, I'd hate to have to order the
stuff through the dealer. But if Weldwood _isn't_ good enough I
certainly don't want to use it.

How about Permatex All Purpose Spray Adhesive 118DA Item #82019, which
is

used for the inside the door vapor barrier (or its 3M equivalent)?

No way. It needs to be tougher than that if you're driving
down the freeway in a driving rain storm! Spray's bad for
controlled application, too. I'll be using a brush.

[MBZ] 107 soft top replacement

2009-06-27 Thread Jim Cathey

I'm gathering myself up to replace the soft top on Ethelred
soon (a week or two) and I'm wondering if I really need the
special MB cement, or whether the usual hardware store contact
cement (Weldwood, in this case) is really the same stuff.
Anybody have an opinion? Any other thoughts or suggestions?

(The new seats, hinge covers, dash cap, and sunvisors really
look good. When I get done I'm sure I won't want to sell
the car.)

What are you cementing together? Does it need flexibiility? How strong
does it have to be? Will ShoeGoo work better?

The canvas is glued to the frame. Pretty solidly. Shoe Goo
is 'too good' a glue, you want something that you can pull
loose the next time you replace the top.

I'm not really sure if it is any different than the solvent based Weldwood

it just is not as good. I bought a can of the genuine stuff about 12 years
ago and it was like $10 for a half liter can. Even if it cost twice as much
at today's prices it would seem like with a job like this I wouldn't want to
take the chance. FWIW the can of genuine stuff had gone off after about a
year in the sealed can. You might want to ask for a can that hasn't been
sitting on the shelf for a while.

No problem, I've got a week off of work coming up, I'll fly out, drive it home
and store it here for you ;)

Actually that week is already designated for painting my 240D. I'll start
grinding rust off next week.
